- Tesla markets the Cybertruck not just as an electric pick-up truck, but as an adventure truck that’s durable and rugged enough to go anywhere.
Such a pitch moves it out of the urban poseur camp and into a niche where owners actually camp.
So we borrowed a Cybertruck fully loaded with every accessory possible. And for context, put it up against EV rival Rivian, and its ground-up reimagining of the pick-up truck in the guise of the R1T.
So, who does the electric adventure truck better? Top Gear Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief, Jack Rix, and Head of Car Testing, Ollie Marriage, headed out in the desert armed with a steak and some fairy lights to find out…

it's actually very nice to sleep inside a tesla, it keeps thee temps and air in check, a whole another experience to traditional cars, the air gets "weird" the windows fog up, you freeze or cook. in the tesla you are perfectly fine.

I rented one for a state trip, ended up just finding a free campground during the travels because it was just much easier in the Y Model.

@@JohnSmith-pn2vl Plus the 12v and usb-C's for your charging needs which I think the Rivian lacks. Lot easier to just toss an inflatable mattress in the car too, plus store when you're at home.
For people who are wondering, that Rivian roof top tent is $2800.
You also have to remove it from the truck or it cooks in the sun. I really like that the CT tent is protected.

Note that you can get any third party tent - many are better than this Yakima one. A solid option is ~$2,200.
Buy an awesome regular tent that sleeps 6 for $200, plenty space, takes 10 min to build and you can still use your car for its intended purpose …

Cybertruck: Simplified everything
Cybertruck Tent: Needlessly complicated
Cybertent combines the worst aspects of regular camping (tents are a PITA to deal with) with the worst aspects of roof top tents (they're expensive).
The main advantage of roof-tent camping is that you can rock up at a site, fold out your tent in like 30 secs and get straight on with chilling out, cooking dinner, admiring the view ....or whatever.
When your truck tent has like 50 steps to erect it you might as well have paid 10x less for a regular tent which goes on the ground.

The Rivian's tent was way easier to set up. Although, isn't this some kind of irony that a vehicle meant to plug into "the grid" has a tent to go "off grid" 🤔
Could you design a tent that looks somewhat like the original renders and fits/integrates into the tray like that? Not saying the Rivian's bad, just saying that sure the Cybertruck's looks complex, but making a tent that fits into the tray like that and come out like that is quite hard
is it really that complicated though? you fold it out and pump it up?
Why didn't you pump the tent up with that tire inflator?
Not sure you need 40 psi in your tent.

@@25566 That will probably take ages. Usually pumps to inflate tents and matrasses can pump a lot of volume at low pressure, while tire pumps do the opposite.

This looked like the easiest tent setup I've ever seen but you somehow still struggled 😂 like one of those bad infomercials where the sad person can't do a basic thing like carry a drink or walk into a room.

That's why I'm holding off ordering mine until they fix all the issues and make a more complete version.
The CyberTruck should have been able to roll down the rear window! That way the tent could have made a seal around it and gotten aircon through all night!
That would take a lot of energy. It would be much better to plug in a heated blanket and spread it out beneath you. Much better heat efficiency.

@@002mjrheated sleeping surface could have been integrated directly into the tent. But assuming you have a lot of energy available in the battery having the option to run the HVAC and feeding it into the tent would be nice. You would also be able to cool it if you are camping somewhere hot.

What I love is that the Rivian still just a truck first. It has 'just a roof tent' on it but that's perfect. Nothing extra really needed. Three minutes of setup.

My problem with the R1T tend is that the sun is going to cook it. Like that the CT trent lives in the box under cover when not in use. For people into tenting install it and leave it.

Honestly that roof tent looks so much more practical and since it's high up you get the benefit of a canopy under it. It's probably also cheaper.

@@ub00b I was going to comment the same re $2,800. Rivian calls it a three person tent - they’re either very compact or very friendly three people - maybe both attributes together.
Would have loved to have known how much power (mileage) was used after the extras (light bar, cooking, coffee etc.). Just out of curiosity.
Kettles pull 2kW for about 5mins usually, so that’s 0.16kWh
Light bar is probably 1kW, so for three hours that’s 3kWh.
The truck’s got a 120kWh battery, so all told it’s fairly negligible.
Our R1S can boil water on a 1000w cook top for an hour and only drain 1%.
Great for car camping!

A little fun fact...I worked for a very high end vehicle transport firm (selling enclosed truck space to mfgs for prototype, advertising, race transport. I handled all of Ferrari's US race events).
One of my key client's was Rivian. I handled the management of all of their prototype transport, for 3 years of development. Went back and forth from different offices (Detroit / Irvine, later IL).
It included weather testing tracks (Minnesota in Winter, Arizona in summer) and to various engineering bench mark facilities nationwide.
The company spent an absolute fortune just in transport (some was their own fault because everything was panic driven last minute cross country trips with 3 day time windows, so eye wateringly expensive to accomplish. Trucks have mileage limits so a very complex endeavor so had to find the best of the best drivers, have them in the area of the pick up at the right time and who were willing to cheat and drive for insane hours without putting the priceless prototype at risk)
Why should this matter to you? I thought that you would want to know how much testing and engineering has gone into Rivian's vehicles. Years of work. Review videos etc. have no idea how much went into the creation of the R1T and R1S . I visited all of their locations and met with key decision makers. Every time I see one on the road, I feel like I had a minuscule part to play in its development. I left that company just before the R1T went into production.
In short, you have what I consider the Swiss watch of EV's as far as how well engineered they are. I thought that it might be interesting for you to know.

The CyberTent was just supposed to be a publicity stunt for the CyberTruck promotional event. Noone intended it to be actually used to spend the night in the outdoors.
That North Face inner jacket saved my life while I was camping in Wales a couple of weeks ago.

Check out what Canpstream is doing. They have a product for other Teslas and Rivian today and will have one for the Cybertruck soon.

Yea.. that would have been nice. But I do like the idea he had of bringing an electric blanket. That would be good enough and probably save a lot of power over running the AC.

I suspect they used a hand pump bcos tire pumps are better suited for small amounts of air at high pressure. Whereas inflatable tents and toys etc are inflated faster with large volumes of air at low pressure
I'm sure someone will figure out a way to jerry rig a traditional rooftop tent onto the Cybertruck without it being off-axis. Possibly a hinged crossbar setup that would allow the tent to maintain the slope of the roof/tonneau when its stowed for transport. On another note, there's an American company called Decked that makes a truck bed assembly which basically raises the floor height of the bed and replaces the empty space beneath with these huge customizable pullout drawers. Pretty hefty price tag, but very nifty and would pair well with this Cybertent situation. Is there a power outlet in the front trunk? If so, It would be a great place to put a top load refrigerator.
The Pontiac Aztec also had a massively overly-engineered canvas house that you could hang on its arse. I suspect this will prove just as popular.

How does the roof tent affect the rivian's range?
It's not a huge amount if you mount it over the bed and face it the correct way. Maybe 1.8 mi/kwh vs 2.x?

Wow, we got guys who sort of look like the guys we had before after JC JM and rh went to the parcel company.
I love how they inadvertently showed how much better the Rivian tent set up was (or it was tongue-in-cheek on purpose which is classic top gear)
So tent setup is basically the same frustrating experience for tent set ups everywhere for all time.
I don’t think Range is actually an issue for those two cars. Obviously, you have to charge frequently on long road trips. But then again, you are not going to off-road 200km before setting up the tent, are you?
That's definitely not the most efficient camping set up for the cybertruk but it's still early days? I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with a few years down the line.

$3K is a lot, but then many rooftop tents are around that ballpark. Hate the CT or not, the integration is pretty sleek and unique.
What is the cost of that Rivian Roof Tent?
1-2k depending on the brand. There are many clamshell models. I was cringing when he got in both times, because he didn't have the ladder locked so the open half of the clamshell was essentially being supported by the hinge and the fabric. Not good. Otherwise, great episode.

Cybertruckgets a lot of fud but it’s a cool looking truck and it handles so good with the steer by wire. Honestly having a giant generator at your work site is so convenient in places like Cali and Texas when the power goes out.
CyberTruck tent is really nice designed and integrated. A pity he made it much more difficult to mount that really is.

Anyone remember the cyber quad bike that should have shipped with cyber truck for a bit extra. Note that cyber truck is still illegal in UK as it's not deemed road safe.
It's a shame that the Tent can't use the camp Mode climate...
They need to scap the fabric tent and an origami type hard sided to fold out like an a-frame does.

Everyone I've ever known who's owned an expensive 'roof top' tent or used one many times and wrote or vlogged about them talk about the expense, the weight, the hassle of setting them up, the limitations, other problems -- and they all say they just aren't worth it.
I can put my Model Y into park, climb in the back roll out my comfy mattress and sleep in 68° climate control in just a few minutes. I've done this for years, in a Honda Odyssey, a Prius V. I've done this in heat, and in freezing temperatures. I love sleeping outside in a tent or bivy, but my Model Y is just too easy and comfortable. The Cybertruck is great, as is the Rvian, but the set ups in this video just look like a lot of over priced bother.
I remeber you could open the rear window to let the air conditioner to warn the cybercamp.
Rivian did such a great job with R1T, would love if they bring something similar to Europe ❤❤❤
funny thing about that frunk 'saftey improvement' if he were to test it repeatedly the frunk will close on the banana or what would be your fingers, it only stops once or twice and then after that it will close fully.

I hope you can toggle OFF the “Open Tonneau Cover” in Tent Mode, what about when you want to sleep in the vehicle cab or bed without a tent and want to level but still need the Tonneau closed for security?
They could've done a better job making the cybertruck tent easier to set up, and it's way too expensive for what it is. That said, I do love how small it folds up and how well integrated it is in the truck bed. The manual pump is dumb though, just use any plug in or battery powered pump.
The CT tent is easier to setup. RTFM and use an electric inflator. This was staged.
After some more iteration, I can see Tesla Cybertruck turning into the most luxurious camping experience.
❤ Camping in Model Y. Install super comfortable mattress that is special built to lay down on back of folded seats. Takes almost nothing to set up. Built in lights, electrical for CPAP, car insulation from elements, protection from wildlife (animals and humans), radio, built in heating and AC. Sleep like a king, wake up and fish like a peasant.

I wonder if there are any similar packages on the horizon for the Silverado RST EV - the one where the entire rear wall can fold down so if you have a camper on the back, the interior is open to it as well. Sounds like a much better alternative.

I presume Rivian forgot to stick one of their outside cooking units (has a cooker, sink and work surface) which is/was an add on extra that slid out from the tunnel which you get to by folding down what was used as the step which you see used to deploy the Rivian tent.
Rivian discontinued those.

It helps to go into the camp trip thinking "it's going to be an absolutely terrible idea" to make sure you are ready to reinforce it as a bad experience throughout the entire experience... this video lost me as an unbiased impression before it even began. In any case i'll wait for v2 of the tent when it includes the heated bed with thicker foam but the cooler is absolutely legendary, would be better if the frunk had an outlet also and the cooler had a heat pump in it and could also make ice like the ecoflow. Bonus points if the lid of the cooler was an electric induction range. I'm also really glad they didn't think to make the electric tire pump accessory also equipped with a port to inflate the tent.
Elon needs to fire who on the Tesla side that OK'd that.
The part where it stashes under the Tonneau is good. The Rivian's opening lever opens the tent is great.
Do either incorporate the fact that it's sitting on a power station for internal lights?

I thought I liked the Rivian, but I actually love the car. I hope to get one soon, although it will probably be a big problem in Europe. The new R2 and R3 look good too, but the pick-up is the best. The Cypertuck isn't my cup of tea, but it's definitely an interesting car too.

Rivian tent is about the same price $2800. Can drive the CT to work all week and just open the tonneau cover to camp. That R1T tent is going to cut range.

I love this advert for Cybertruck, courtsey of Top Gear. Gone are the days when the BBC refused to advertise - nowadays, the promise of goodies that will never see the actual light of day is enough to get the BBC on board on promoting a monster that will never be seen in the UK. Why am I paying my licence fee again?

I have an old 1993 W140 S class Mercedes coupe
that I use for picking up and delivering pinball machines around the country for past 10 years.
it has 3 memory buttons
1 - for driving, and a great long distance GT driving machine it is too.
2 - for loading a pinball machine, ( it even lowers lower and pulls in steering wheel and straightens the interior mirror )
3 - adjusts everything to perfect sleeping in car position for those 2 or more day journeys
the 6 litre engine retains enough heat to keep interior relatively warm all night in winter
and the double glazing along with copious insulation ensures a nice quiet nights rest.
and when I need to move 2 or 3 pinball machines, I can easily put my duvet on the roof and strap down the 2nd and 3rd machine through the pillarless doors and windows.
and cover them with a tarp.

my alu cab tent cost 6000 and it sets up in 3 seconds on top of an fj cruiser that has s fridge and 5000 watt stereo that i can run all night on lithium battery and still drive anywhere i want the next day

These are the people you try to avoid while camping.
Even as a Cybertruck fan I still would prefer Rivian's variant of caping tent. Looks simple to set up, just like any other Tesla to use. Why overcomplicate it?

I would take the CT based on how well it stows away. Not out in the rough with a tent bouncing around. How much does the tent cut the range hanging out in the wind.
You should have tried it in a heavy rainstorm, to see what it's really capable of :)
You can buy roof top tents like the one on the Rivian for as low as $900. You can also spend a mint, so I'm not necessarily dinging the Tesla for that - but one VERY big point, you can put the standard RTT on any other normal kind of truck when you sell the Rivian, or on top of lots of SUVs/vans. Guess with the Tesla you have to hope the next buyer likes the outdoors.
Cybertruck has racks for sale if you want rooftop set up.
@@Abebe345 that's fine, but that doesn't address what you do with the Cybertent(?) when you sell the Tesla - not like it's going to fit anything else. Point being, standard RTTs can be moved to your next vehicle, the Tesla can't.
@@jaymelton2663 Point is the cybertruck tent stows in the bed under Tesla's working tonneau cover. Out of the elements and the air stream.
@@danharold3087 And, how then is this tent that takes up most of the bed when it's stowed supposed to be moved onto another vehicle when you sell your Cybertruck? It fits nothing else, only the Cybertruck. So, when you sell it, that could be a real issue - a lot of people won't want that in their bed, etc. The one on the Rivian can be moved to your next vehicle.
