  • Indelibly linked with the MGB sports car of the 1960s and ‘70s, MG is now better known as the purveyor of practical cars at the affordable end of the market. Until now…
    You’re looking at a sports car that neither Porsche nor Tesla have managed to put into production yet: a two-door open-top with punchy electric power.
    It’s a halo car for MG, with svelte styling (complete with scissor doors) and single- and dual-motor powertrain options.
    We’ll likely see Porsche’s forthcoming electric Boxster and the much-delayed Tesla Roadster towards the end of 2024, but production of either won’t start until 2025. Which means, for now, the MG Cyberster has the market all to itself.
    But what’s it like to drive? To bring you one of the very first reviews in the world, Top Gear Magazine’s Tom Ford has been all the way to China to try it…

    The important thing, to me anyway, is that this is the first proper EV roadster on the market. The Tesla roadster left the building more than 10 years ago and was very expensive as it was a first.
    This would do well for most couples looking for a bit of top down fun.
    My wife & I used to have the BMW Z4 E89 and we kept it for nearly 8 years, because we loved it so much. At the end, insurance wouldn't cover it anymore, in Thailand, and we thought; let it go.
    The Cyberster ticks all the same boxes and then some; it's cheaper/faster/roomier.

But our rep in Thailand said they will not offer that feature in Thailand. Didn't say why. If this gets a UK tweak in driving dynamics and say 20% hike in motor power, whilst retaining 1 motor cost and weight it should sell like hot cakes...at £49k (large battery) or less, to overcome any stigmas that may exist and try and disguise the current anxiety towards EVs in general
    With above formula, I think it could go down in history and latch on to the MX5 style bang for buck roadster mass appeal :)

No car needs to be that heavy, maybe this is why people love 'driving' mk1 and mk2 escorts, lotus elise, mazda mx5, early Porche 911 etc. Then there's electric steering...... I've never had a good experience of electric steering but maybe I haven't tried enough cars. I wonder how much this would cost to maintain in ten years?

    As someone who has the misfortune of driving an MG for work everyday. You will be impressed with the MG "build quality". Including door seals that don't fit around the door, Poor welds on the body and a host of other shortcuts. Apart from that it actually drives pretty good.
    You get what you pay for. There are no "shortcuts" to quality. Thus, I wouldn't get a personal sportscar from MG. I want something of quality, not something trying to undercut the market.

    • @kevinlin4895

    • @WarsOfate
      @WarsOfate Před 9 dny +3

      By that logic, older train using coal also has "soul" because it's dirtier and way noisier.....
      This is coming from someone who used to own modified turbo-ed car (and modified sound system inside it), the engine sounds just drowned the audio system persistently..... imagine having long road trip inside a mclaren f1, you can't argue that it doesn't have 'soul' in it.....
      Sure, the noise used to signify something when it represents power but when the power is no longer there, it's just noise ..... something that the old guard manufacturers still try to sell to older customers romanticizing on older techs.....
