FIRST LOOK: Ferrari 12Cilindri - Silly Name, Crazy 820bhp V12!

- The Italian language is very good - molto bene - at turning simple car names into lyrical poetry. ‘Four doors’ becomes ‘Quattroporte’. ‘Red head’ becomes ‘Testarossa’. And so, while this new Ferrari is called the 12 Cylinder, Maranello would prefer you wrapped your lips around their way of talking, and called it the Dodici Cilindri.
(But, Because Marketing, the name is written out as 12Cilindri.)
It’s an on-the-nose celebration of Ferrari’s signature dish: a big V12. A mighty 6.5-litre instrument, mounted way behind the front axle, and under a gigantic clamshell ‘cofango’ bonnet designed to showcase the engine bay more dramatically than the 812 Superfast or F12. Job done…
Looks wise, there are hints of 365 Daytona at the front. There are also active aero flaps at the rear. Inside, Ferrari’s gone fully screen-gaga and deleted all the buttons. Good luck tuning the radio when 814bhp arrives at the rear wheels before the tyres are warm ‘n’ sticky.
Unusually, Ferrari has revealed the €425,000 Spider drop-top along with the €390,000 coupe. Top Gear’s Ollie Kew has been to Ferrari HQ in Maranello, Italy to see them, and is here to talk you round the new V12. In his best Italian accent…

'812 Superfast', 'Quattroporte', 'Testarossa': name some other wonderfully literal car names...
it looks like a resto mod Daytona 365.
Maserati named after winds, Mistral, Bora, Khamsin, Merak, Lamborghini names there's after bulls!
No no you are soo wrong, this is an absolute beauty of a retro throwback....the new Lambo looks hideous
If you pronounced Dodici a bit fast sounds like dodgy isn’t it?
@@sammymaestro7642 Actually, it's not that bad in real life... We had a matt light green Revuelto in our Warehouse at the Airport couple of days ago! I was standing at the back of the car! Definitely the chocolate side of the car!😍👍
Top gear, italian is a beautiful language! They could name it in bad and strong words and it still would sound beautiful in my ears... Because I don't understand italiano...🤷♂️🤣👌
Remember when Clarkson thought the F12 was the last V12. Now we're another 2 generations in.
we all had our reasons to think that way, we thought that the future was in HYDROGEN not even in battery ev's!

F12 was the last great!
@@CovKid2K10 what was wrong with the 812?
All the shots of the Daytona not being one with the black nose is quite funny
Yeh no clue why they didn’t compare it to the plexiglass one
Screams of poor research.
@@freeskier6377I’m guessing either the bbc don’t own stock footage of the plexiglass version or the video editor has no idea 2 versions exist
@@UpTheAnte1987 Well it's not just stock footage, it's footage from a Top Gear episode, so they didn't need to pay for it. Also I happen to think the plexiglass Daytonas are uglier than the later ones. It's a bit like people who specced the wire wheels instead of the alloys for their Daytonas, they would have looked dated within about 5 minutes of the car being built.
Fixed!

Ferrari's naming convention has sometimes been related to the engine.
458 - 4.5L 8 cylinder
612 - 6L 12 cylinder
355 - 3.5L 5 valve
most of its naming until recently for their mainstream ferrari has always been about engine. Like 512, 612, 599, 430, 458,355, 360, f meant flat but they stopped using flat 12 engines.
@@lexuslfa4739 488 aswell
Ferrari from the very start was always a number for CC per cylinder.
The 1947 125S = 125*12 = 1.5L V12, 250 whatever = 250*12 = 3L V12, 860 Monza = 860*4 = 3.4L I4.
and 456 gt
and the new 296 GTB (2.9l 6 cylinder) but not the SF90
Ferrari needs to take a note out of Bugatti's rule book. No Screens inside the car to keep it timeless. Also not sure I want to be doing 200mph and need to touch a screen to lower the temp! Looks fantastic.
Omg yes. The screens are points of failure and do not scream longevity
I suspect that at 200 mph, the temp is what the temp is until you slow down. 😊
Yeah, I was just thinking that as I was going 200mph, or a typical Saturday. Not 👀
Your definition of 'fantastic' is rather peculiar... Especially coming from someone apparently not into touch screens and other useless crap.
They're no Bugatti, that's for sure
Too bad you missed showing the correct period Daytona (with plexiglass nose) which this car replicates.
I think most of us thought of that same daytona immediately ! They did a bit of an injustice by showing the wrong one, because I think this is a fairly accurate and subjectively beautiful hommage.
It *is* a bit annoying lmao, how they deliberately show the wrong car just to score some cheap mockery of the design.
We all know the plexiglass nose one from the world’s most famous Daytona, the fake Miami Vice one.
@@sydney4814 Except if it is a car made in England. In that case all is praise and worth to mention in a glorified manner. Just another disgusting BBC show.
Yes exactly!
820hp from a 6.5L naturally aspirated V12 is absolutely insane.
That's 126hp per liter, not really insane. Honda S2000 had that in 1999 and the current highest is GMA T.50 with 166hp per liter. Lots in between.
@@mickeyduvel But the S2000 was only fun if you kept it at 8000 RPMs, as it really had no TQ maybe 150, vs 500 ft lbs
@@daviddee7103so you are comparing a 2.0 liter engine against a 6.5 liter?...🤦🏽♂️
@@daviddee7103well the s2000 was a 2 liter 4 cylinder this has 12 cylinders
@@mickeyduvel Yeah the T.50 is the new gold standard in V12 engines. Well all engines really. The t.50 is so much better than any car, I don't think it will ever be topped.
This looks absolutely beautiful! In my humble opinion, there is nothing to complain about. A marvel, in whatever colour !
I wasnt so convinced by the shape qt first but that green spider looked amazing.
Soon as I saw that blacked out front piece I was thinking Daytona. Rear roof line/glass looks a bit like toned down Zagato styling.
Same but I didn't know the name of the Ferrari I was thinking of lol
It's all about invoking some old Ferrari rather than making anything original. It's the end for Ferrari design lmao.
No way, the black parts look like the Toyota crown's .....
Same with me. The rear reminds me a bit of alfa 8c disco volante
The hips above the rear wheels are too high tho
I think you can adjust the temperature before accelerating.😉
Italian here, the bonnet is called "cofano", cofango is what Lamborghini called their bonnet on the Huracan STO because they integrated the fender/mudguard into it (cofano + parafango). And to correctly pronounce the name 12 Cilindri you should say every i as the second i in "initiating" (I couldn't come up with a better example 😂)
You mean 3rd “i”😂
Couldn't agree more. If you can't pronounce it properly, say it just the once (well done for trying) but don't constantly make a point of saying it if you butcher every attempt. 🙄
Yeah. Every "i" has to sound the same, dog. Even I know that and my command of the Italian language is 🤏🏻
Daw-dee-chee Chi-lean-dree
That should do it
@@fabiodandrea4951 I'll raise.

Sometimes it helps to start with the last syllable and add syllables going backwards, until you have the whole word.
It would overall be better if he could speak Italian to whoever designed the car and yell at them in Italian. I feel the grievances (which I share) about the black clip in front and the overuse of touch screens in general, were not addressed. Designer may be a bit of a prima donna. Could take lessons from what's his name... Camilo Pardo.
That is one of the best looking cars I've ever seen

@@Giraffe537 the said car also raced around circuit de la sarthe and spa frachescochamps. The only conclusion I can come to ferrari is really getting lazy with naming their cars. 12 cilindri how creative next to revoluto which sounds like an app to exchange currencies.
Thank you for the knowledge.
Good lord I am so happy that over the last 5 years or so, Ferrari has remembered how to build beautiful, elegant cars.
It seemed like they really lost that after the 90s, and all their cars started to look like someone attacked the clay model with a scalpel. Classic Ferraris were as beautiful as they were brutal, thays part of what made them soecial, and that really got lost.
Compare a Ferrari 365 GTC/4, or even a 366 GT 2+2, to a FF. Then look at the Roma, or this. So much better.
"Cofango" is a word made up by Lamborghini because they made an entire piece in the front of some cars like the STO. The bonnet in Italian would be Cofano, without the G. But +100 points for the effort.
The Fiat coupe had the cofango already in 1994
I was thinking the exact same thing, glad that car nerds like us exist!
Clearly he can't pronounce or read.... I mean... DodicE :)))
Worst reviewer I've ever watched. It's like he hates his job and Ferrari in general...

Guess they didn’t want u to think it was a V12 Roma lol
You shut your mouth! I'm trying hard to erase that idea now 😂 - but seriously I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. We need a departure from the deep gashes and crazy aero/intakes everywhere design of the Superfast. I absolutely love the Superfast but this brings a different vibe, I like it.

I guess you have to buy the convertible to have the black parts in body color. Since that one is completely green.
You can get it paint matched…if your car is black 😂
Whatever I would still looks incredible ugly
I think the little nod back to the 365 GTB 4, was a nice touch for a flagship 12 cylinder GT car.
I think the contrasting color of the black on bits and bobs looks a bit busy, especially in the boot area.
In all, it looks great but really what I want to see is a road test and listen to the music of that glorious 12 at full chat.
Bravo !
