I have to agree the chrome strip bisecting the rear panel makes it look like a hearse. Might be better with a different roof colour that contrasts with the window.
I don't think there is another roof color though.
@cbotten106 then it can be wrapped in a color to deviate it from the hearse look.
why do americans think everything looks loke a hearse?
Acura tried to hide resemblance of a station wagon, and instead produced a hearse. To me there is no attractive design of any hearse, but I saw nice designs of lots of European brands of station wagons.
@@nevco8774 station wagons are dope. They are utilitarian, economical, roomy and can even be specd with high performance drivetrains
I can’t unsee the “Hearse” now😂.
I just thought the same thing
"Maybe spinners will make a comeback on EVs" -- might be the funniest line I've heard on a video from Out of Spec.
I liked "we don't test drive cars on paper, we test them on asphalt," better.
The chrome strip on the roof reminds me of a hearse.
BIG TIME!
So true. Oh no. I can't unsee it now. "At least he went from us in silence..." ;)
Exactly what is thought!
My thoughts exactly!!!!
Cargo space is measured in # of coffins.
"It _will_ get switched to NACS, which is great." I wonder if this was recorded a few days ago?
Not built in Ohio, built in Spring Hill, TN at the old Saturn factory. If that is the gold color vehicle you need to check your white balance on your video camera.
I appreciate your ***critical*** review!!! So far, the most in-depth video from the 10+ videos I've watched! 👍
Alyssa holding on for dear life
24:20 “Close that hood! It’s ugly.” 😂
For real 😂
Thanks. Great review on handling and charging.
I was watching this in my Chevy Bolt through the Bose sound system, and the sound inside the ZDX tricked me into thinking I was hearing thunder outside the Chevy Bolt.
Eeeeeeeeeeeepic Kyle you his production is exactly why u DESERVE th big bucks…….. hit ur camera woman a lick she does a great job
@17:18 ok now i can't not see a hearse now either thanks oos dave :P
Great video. Looking forward for your polestar 3 review. I just ordered one and hope to have a professional review this car.
I like the color but I liked it better on 1972 Ford LTD Brougham. Can we get a comparison test with the Wagon Queen Family Truckster?
The fact that Super Cruise is a monthly fee means that it should be on all specs of the car. Why limit your potential subscriber base?
Nice shart brown paint color, kinda matches the charging curve.
Baby diaper brown, I've done the research. The charging curve is even worse than the color though.
I'll stick with E-GMP for now.
Alyssa is correct...a lot of welding (spot)! Structural adhesive was seam sealer...
They improved the charging speed on the Lyriq. It now holds above 100kW until 80%. Still 35+ charging time but not as bad as this. Hopefully those improvements come to this car.
I am from Ohio and I'm pretty sure this car is made in Spring Hill Tennessee, not Ohio. 😊. Great video awesome review!
I used to put maps in the pocket behind the seats. Glad they are sticking with that /s
I think having cross-platform utilization is great. The more you can produce of that part the easier it will be to get and the more likely aftermarket parts will become available. Even if each of these remain somewhat niche having multiple brands use the same one should mean you'll have battery support and such down the road 🤞
I think it would be great for Kyle to spend time with an AWD Lyriq. I bet it feels a lot more like the ZDX than he is expecting.
22:35 *pause* yeah, sure
That moment is just priceless 🤣
This is a great comparison to Lyriq. I have a 24 Lyriq AWD luxury 3 loaded. As a start, I'm shocked at under the hood for that just one center plastic piece and so much exposed, where the Lyriq is fully covered.
The main reason for a full cover with no frunk is for noise blocking, since the customer is only expected to lift the hood to refill wiper fluid. I guess Acura met their noise goal with just the landing strip.
@@concinnus Landing strip? 🤣
Musk and his PR army of Tesla fanbois misled the public that repeated fast charging is safe - it’s not, as evidenced by a record number of Teslas whose batteries have failed prematurely - many below 10,000 miles. Tesla has been replacing many failed batteries under warranty - warranty spending is partly why free cash flow has plummeted over the last several quarters. Slower charging is the best for long term health of not just the battery but also the associated electrical components. I switched to the Lexus RZ450e electric ($43,000 after Lexus incentives) which after latest Lexus software update is delivering >4.0 miles/kWh (260+ miles) - far more efficient than my Model Y’s 2.9 miles/kWh in city driving which is 90% of my usage. Not only does the Lexus blow away the Model Y in refinement, ride comfort and tech, Lexus also gives you FREE loaners for 30 days to use for longer road trips which is huge as it saves miles/wear and tear on your electric. Don’t get me started on the overall Lexus VIP level service experience vs the abysmal Tesla “service” quality.
Bottomline: Don’t fall for Tesla’s faster charging hype - slower charging is the best for battery health and if you take frequent long trips, best to get a hybrid or a PHEV.
I think it looks good. But it seems to me that it is not nearly as quiet as my Ioniq 5 Limited. Also, the DCFC dropped to 107kW at only 31%? Tsk. Just last week I saw that my Ioniq 5 was still charging at 133kW when it hit 80%.
OMFG Kyle is that the Bank of America in Santa Barbara I've charged there when I was working in LA :)
Wild how it's visually so much smaller than our 2023 Tesla Model X Plaid but nearly 1,000lb heavier. With half the power.
Nice to see you back Kyle reviewing something more for the masses. ZDX looks really nice .
Still need 70mph for VinFast 8, Chevy Blazer, Equinox , New ID 4 ,Aryia , ..all the mid size suvs. hoping t see th entire team 5,6,7 of you take them all out for 70mph same day. Besides being very cool to watch it alo would allow you to get caught up, you're running yourself thing with all the New Evs coming out. You have a team , you dont have ot do everything.
Love the color, the yellow calipers go with it too.
i like the looks despite the hearse styling cues (same criticism some make of the Odyssey Minivan despite that historically being a great seller)...
however i think it would look even better without the 3-tone paint, just make that lower Silver cladding in the same Piano Black as the roof...
yikes, how does any electric SUV weigh MORE than a BMW IX...? an EV that itself (while a tour de force in Bavarian design) was known to be a BEHEMOTH upon arrival.
OH my, no lane centering! I think most people will survive. I always turn it off anyways.
Between the hearse swoosh, the squats greenhouse and the “shelf” over the taillights, the rear 3/4 view looks…..challenging.
@kyle, syncing the center-display to the cluster too has issues. The road speed limit indicator does not show. At least by default. The SOC is an absolute miss like you showed.
So I'm 5 minutes in the video and the car looks like a hearse with that chrome trim, too funny Acura. Is there a matching Butterscotch casket to order as a option?
Steering ratio per Acura. 18.4:1 for the regular model and 15.9:1 for the type S.
You guys went off the deep end with the Slimy leather and the under hood segment. I was LOL. I appreciate yall keeping it real! Under the hood is a rats nest for a clean sheet job!
Wow that reveal under the hood was... Interesting to say the least, and from a ground up ev? Yeesh
"This is a ground up battery electric vehicle chassis, meant to be an EV not shared with any combustion... What the heck is going on under here?"
This is what happens when legacy automotive engineering management design an EV. I've been an engineer in automotive for 10 years (3 years at the Big Three and 7 years in off road industrial vehicles) and this is exactly what the engineering teams I've worked with would do.
This may be a ground up EV but most of the components under the hood (brakes, HVAC, windshield wipers/fluid, fuse box assemblies) aren't ground up. Unless you are trying to innovate you either reuse or modify existing solutions. It saves so much money if you don't have to reinvent the wheel (less design time, less design reviews, less feasibility studies, less failure analysis, less prototyping, less certification, less retooling for manufacturing, etc). It's really hard to convince a project manager that it's worth the expense to make the space under the hood "prettier". It's a lot easier to convince them to get a giant piece of plastic to cover the ugly bits like they do on the Lyriq, so I'm a little surprised they have so much exposed. Maybe if they were given a directive to create a frunk they would have done things differently but Acura has decades of engine bay designs that are easy to copy/paste and modify to fit their needs instead of designing everything from scratch.
It's easy for Tesla or Rivian to have innovative solutions in those spaces because they are starting from scratch and their design budgets are built around innovating. Legacy manufacturers don't get that luxury.
@@jon1913 they should have that luxury the same as any company like Tesla or rivian, if they are a successful company they should be able to do it, I think it's a culture and attitude problem, it's too conservative
@@nathansuss You're not wrong, I was just giving my experience as to why it is the way it is. Most engineers don't go into this industry to copy/paste existing designs. We really want to make new and exciting things but we are all cogs in the corporate machine so we do what we must to get paid. Sometimes we will have to find innovative solutions to fit design constraints and those solutions will change how future products are made but we rarely are given a blank slate and a blank check to create whatever we want.
The most ground breaking innovation at my company happens during our hack-a-thons where we have a few days (or occasionally a full week) to prototype whatever innovative idea you want. It could be a process improvement or a training solution or a new product feature that would make/save the company millions of dollars. Skeptically it's the company leaching our ideas to make money but it's honestly the best week of the year! Occasionally those ideas go through the tech development process and eventually make it into production, you'll get a nice little award and maybe a bonus if the idea is patentable, which is nice. The other 51 weeks of the year we are slogging through the day to day workload of getting vehicles to customers and resolving defects.
The interesting part to me is that apparently the engineers claim they loaded up the front to increase cargo space but did they really? I think Model Y has more headroom all the while having more components underneath.
I think the Lyriq looks better inside and out. Lots of similarities, between the two, but pricing wise, with current discounts, the Lyriq is a even a better deal. Going to be interesting to see how they sell when the Acura starts hitting dealer lots.
Did Kyle say this was made in Ohio (2:07)? ZDX is made in Spring Hill Tennessee, on the Lyriq assembly line.
Maybe he was thinking of the battery? Even then, Ultium Spring Hill has also started production.
Gorgeous car!! Pity about the current background!! We have SOME Accura cars over here in England!! But I don’t think this one’s come over!!
I was about to comment it looks like a hearse, then right before you said your parents thought the same thing!! Haha
That carbon fiber spoiler is a $1000.00 option. The carbon fiber side mirrors are $400.00. There are several accent pieces that are sold separately.
My first thought about that trim strip was a hearse also. Nothing good looking about this car.
The thing about buying an ev from them is their engineers are essentially learning all the hard lessons learned other automakers have but the cars cost the same. In other words Acura EVs will be behind for a few years before they get decent.
Really one of the dumbest things I have ever read
I should be getting into one within the week, wont waste my time with Blazer, the Base version of this lol
I like the 90's style cladding
The charging issue I noticed; is a reason I think all the charging ports should be a back of car. if it's facing that close to the fast charge station. it's harder to grab cooler air. If you could back in that would allow the car to take in more unrestricted air to assist the thermal management.
That highway driving sounded pretty loud over the mic
Watching from Europe - dang, want more like this (assume it's probably too big for Europe but only just)
GM isn't trying to package things like a sardine in the front... They like to space things out for ease of manufacture and also for maintenance.
Really enjoyed Alyssa's comments.
Still looking forward to the Audi Q6 e-tron test and review 😁
Those front tire pressures don’t make sense for the weight, that’s a massive contact patch, perhaps explains the range hit
Toyota Corolla has lane centering standard
This might be Acura's best SUV!
So would the Lyric would actually be quieter on the hiway than the Type S? That's interesting!
Looking at the back side profile reminds me of a funeral car 🤣
At this price point, is the Cadillac Lyriq the better buy?
Plus 1 on the "It's a hearse" reaction
It is incomprehensible that you can not see the battery charging level.... In EV cars it it the most important information you need to know....
Volvo doesn’t show it in their EVs either, only a range number.
1:24:00 I just saw spinners for the first time in ages too. Maybe they’re making a comeback…
If you think those Accura cameras are naff, take a look at the Renault Zoe camera. The Zoe only has a reversing camera. That has 360 degree cameras!!
I wonder if Alyssa just handed him a Snickers how much different this review would be. Great looking? ☑️ Great audio system? ☑️ $7,500 tax credit? ☑️ advanced self-driving? ☑️ advanced suspension? ☑️
I’d like to drive it, but I love the HondaE, wish they’d continue that
EV SUV's are an oversaturated market, but knowing it's Ultium I have high hopes of this. Although I think I'd consider a Lyriq over this due to them being a bit cheaper. Both are absolutely pretty though and the ability to turn this into a station wagon is really cool
"This is a no for me, dog!" Love it 1:17:44
Is the lighter color of the front and rear bumper a design point or was the goal to have them match the vehicle color?
I noticed that too. Hopefully this is a preproduction lol. The colour difference was very noticeable.
This is a Chevy Blazer mixed in the DNA of a Hearse side profile.
nope. A normal station wagon side profile. Why are you americans like this?
The Funeral Parlour special edition!
Great video Kyle. These awful packages remind me of the Polestar 2.
Another arms outstretched thumbnail. Still measuring something.
They hug us.
Is it intentionally missing covers under the hood? The Blazer EV has covers all over under the hood. Its like a 4 or 5 piece setup, one center piece, front piece by the hood latch and then 2 sides yet this has just the center. Seems like a big miss to me.
Looks like a great looking hearse.
In Canada even on our major highways Super-cruise is very sparse, long Live Tesla FSD 12.3.6 it totally rocks, even on gravel roads wow!
From the side, it looks like a hearse. Hopefully it doesn’t die in sales like it does in looks.
As an 07 Acura TLS owner, yeah I think I'll wait for the Lucid GRAVITY even at the starting price of 80k lol
From the rear quarter panel full side view it looks like a Hurst
Honda is now working with Nissan on Electric
4:08 the e:ny1 uses BYD’s tech
I actually like the rear end of this compared to the weirdness that is the Lyriq
Looks like a hearse with the chrome roofline accent. Not a fan but understand why Honda needed something electric in the marketplace.
It looks so damn good. I want to win a small lottery so i can get myself a honda prologue, it reminds me of an evoque
OEM carmakers should just bite the bullet and bring back Station Wagons for their EV brands. It's obvious from the design of the ZDX that this EV just has a boatload of not that efficient batteries (based on miles per kWh) in order to be somewhere in the 300 miles per charge range.
There's an article out there from Car and Driver on future EV's coming and almost all of them looked to be 'stretched' out in order to cram as many batteries in their concept car because they haven't figured out to increase/maximize the battery technology yet on a miles per kWh basis.
That Ultium platform, GMs Mary Barra did it again ...Promise a lot and Un- deliver!
The weight isn't that surprising. It's a big battery and primarily steel construction = heavy.
Looks cool. But some unfortunate quirks and features, to borrow a phrase. Then again, for its price tag and category, possibly about par
Would have though that they would have learned from negative feedback about the Lucid top-half-different-than-bottom-half pain job had. But then again they also painted it baby-poop brown and obviously have never seen a hearse so maybe they were just going all in on "Lets make this press loaner as visually unappealing as possible. No bad press right?"
I was just thinking to myself the other day how I'd like to see an EV wagon. But the rear kind of reminds me of a hearse.
Thanks for the review. This car may have a space in the market, but it will never have a space in my garage.
Facing south to north from the rear on the side, it looks like a Hurse to me.
I have Polestar 3 pricing and it competes here in Canada, surprised if you spec it with everything (less LIDAR) it is $14K less than the Volvo EX90 Ultra trim with similar specs, could be tempting, the ZDX S is about $10K less than the Polestar 3, sorry Acura, Polestar 3 would be my first choice even at the high price.
Nice Acura Hearse
This will not sell well, lease....maybe. But what is the reason to buy this versus its sister vehicle? Better yet another brand altogether.
No SiriusXM option?
Hopefully they get better. For the price I’d rather take a model x.
After reading about the development of other highly innovative & risky products (not automotive), I wonder if Honda's resources were seriously depleted by the time they went to work with GM on this car. After all, they'd put lots of effort into the Clarity fuel cell design. Perhaps it's a similar story with Toyota. (Yes, I know some of you are already thinking that Hyundai was able to design & market both types!) I'm sure that original Honda/Acura vehicles are on the way.

It’s a GM with an Acura badge. Also, I didn’t know that hearses were becoming electric.
