Don’t buy a 4xe Grand Cherokee. My sisters has been in the shop in Oklahoma for 7 months with several others and the engineers can’t fire out how to get it to start. There is some kind of communication problem with the hybrid modules that won’t allow the engine to start.
The scary part is that Jeep won’t buy it back. She bought a 70k suv that she can’t drive and jeeps answer was they would give her a small amount of money and tow it to her house. Still not running! All of this and the bank doesn’t care, they want the payments. The trade value has crashed because this is so common according to the service writer.

Great chat. Still have a bit of a challenge with the Colorado rock crawling off road over indexing. Let’s face it, basically 100% of these vehicle will be used only as commuters. No one, really, goes off road any more than it takes to drive to the camp site or ski hill. Broncos and Wranglers shouldn’t even be in the same discussion with the Land Cruiser as they fit a completely different use case although pretty much all are bought as commuters.
Where the LC and 4Runner have always been different from each other is in the areas you can’t see. Axle and differential robustness, plastic part quality under the hood, etc. I’ve owned Land Cruisers since 1987 and every one of them was built to a different standard than the similar pickup/Tacoma/4Runner. You only really notice the difference after a 100k miles of hard use. Short tests will never shine the right light on a Land Cruiser. And situations that may damage a 4Runner will most likely not even phase a Land Cruiser. To me those differences are worth paying the prices for.
That 80 series you have? Even at its age you could drive that from Denver to Patagonia with no worries.

define off road. Fire roads loaded down with mountain bikes? Muddy trails loaded down with my offroad camper and fly fishing or hunting gear? Yep.
Rock crawling? Nope. For new vehicles, that in my mind is for modified Wrangler and Broncos. Even when driving the backcountry in Utah, i want to get some where. And back. That is what the Land Cruiser line has always been built for.
Over the last 45 years I’ve driven Land Cruisers from the Arctic to South America. Never once needed 35” tires or a front locker. Never needed doors or roof panels that come off. But i did need absolute reliability, roof capacity, dust sealing, payload, and comfort for the long drive. Land Cruiser fits that

I think the Land Cruiser also gives you a more on road and more high tech power train in terms of the full time 4x4 system. In the 4Runner there are very few trims that can be configured to have the full time system and of them I don’t believe any of them also have the rear locker. It’s a big difference in a lot of ways because you kind of get the best of both worlds. I do think it was a massive mistake to not offer the third row however

Compared to GX - far better fuel economy, easier to lift/modify without E-KDSS, more physical controls vs touch screen based, better aftermarket support in the future, no need for bigger towing capacity. Compared to new 4Runner - has full time 4wd (this alone is the deal maker), more headroom, better exterior and interior styling, less off road goodies that can/could be added to the LC.

Roman and Tommy, The caption to introduce the video says "Land Cruiser vs The World." For decades the 'world' has been offered the Prado as their mid-size Land Cruiser while the USA and Canada have had the 4Runner fulfilling the same role. Finally seeing the two side by side has really underlined an anomaly, why have the people of Kuala Lumpur and Qatar been getting a 4X4 with far more generous headroom than the Plus-Sized people of Kansas and Calgary? The latest versions just continue this contradiction with the Land Cruiser 250 offering much more space for big-boned North Americans to 'park' their baseball caps than the 4Runner. At 6'2", I know which model is top of my wish/daydream list. The next shoe to drop in Toyota's 4X4 lineup is the compact Land Cruiser FJ. Its debut is expected within a few months. We just don't know if it is coming here or not. 🤔

For me, given that there will be no 6MT available in any of the 4Runners or LC250, I would have to go for the LC250. For me it comes down to seating position; having sat in the new Tacoma it is still a lowish seating position albeit much improved compared to the previous Tacoma generation. Same engine, so I forecast a comparable MPG on both 4Runner and LC250. Same towing. And since the 4Runner Trailhunter trim is the one I like on the 4Runner side, we are already in the pricing realm of the LC250 LandCruiser trim. Too many options and everything going “off road”. I’d love to take a poll of Jeep and Bronco owners and see how often or how many times they actually go off road. I went with the Pathfinder Rock Creek edition. I know it’s not in the same class but I’m also realistic with myself. Am I doing hardcore off-roading? No. Do I go camping and dirt roads, yes. Do I commute to work on a concrete jungle? Yes! And I got a regular V6 for $39,000. The SUV and Truck market is insane and has been since Covid and nothing had adjusted it’s just getting worse and my salary hasn’t gone up to match that market 😂

The upcoming 4Runner looks great as well as the Landcruiser/GX and if I was flush with money I would get the GX and have a Bronco for rock climbing. is there a reason you would want to have the 2 wheel drive of the 4-Runner vs. the full time 4 wheel drive of the Land Cruiser? I think the 4-Runner has more than enough off road capability but am thinking I might prefer to avoid the 2 wheel drive. (why: personal history, in a very very sudden bad weather situation in a prior 4-Runner - slid into some damage that I think would have been avoided if the vehicle was all time 4 wheel drive) Having an all time 4 wheel drive seems like a best option due to personal negative experience. Thinking the Land Cruiser is the choice other than of course the price difference and they hybrid power. *would prefer not to have the worry of hybrid battery future costs but seems like no choice there... Like the Land Rover Defender as well but quite concerned about the quality/dependability and costs with repairs long term. *occasional off road and some high altitude mountain roads, etc but primarily fair weather general road usage.

Which leaves you wanting for the interior of the summit or summit reserve interior.. did not have the same experience with the plus in hybrid. Drives quite well on road, and the 30 mile real range with regen braking on battery is quite nice…. But having owned defender / wrangler 392 / summit 4xe and bronco w/ squatch…. Defender is BY FAR the best to daily and for normal non rock crawl off road…. New Defender SE with V8 is the king…

Sway bar disconnect doesn't come with the 1958 model. Does it have room for 33s or 35s without a lift? As a long term Element owner, I like the boxy design of the Land Cruiser over the curvy 4 Runner. Me, Land Rover lack of quality makes it a non-starter, ditto Jeep.Having a career in manufacturing (not cars), the accountants would cheap stuff out using the term "value engineering". The "perfect" choice for me is something that can tow my small camper to Alaska, set the trailer up in Fairbanks, then head up the Dawson to Deadhorse, and over to top of the world road. Definitely RIGHT on color choice. C'mon Toyota, put some fun colors! Styling wise, Toyota nailed it with the LC 1958. Lexus grills are hideous.

    A few thoughts…
First, Roman can be disappointed with Toyota’s promo course, but 90% of owners will NEVER come anywhere close to driving anything like that course, let’s be honest.
Second, the pricing on these are insane, maybe one of the biggest examples of the current “scamflation” plaguing the US market. $55k for a 1958 which is essentially a 4Runner with a different exterior and the interior of a 1987 Corolla is just kinda ridiculous. A dealer here in the Twin Cities is listing a First Edition at $82k, so much for “cheaper” or “more affordable”.

  • @vaimurthy
    @vaimurthy Před 4 měsíci

Not sure why you guys repeating that it is cheaper. Majority crowd looking for LC will go for mid trim which is going to cost 70K. Again comparing to previous gen does not make sense, as that one was larger with V8. This one runs on 4 cyclinder and cheaper NI battery. In terms of manufacturing cost, this is lot cheaper to make. Also LC with not so good offroad tire in this trim as well. So 70K for Toyota is not cheap.

Slapping a Land Cruiser badge on a vehicle doesn't make it any better or worse than any other Toyota model with the same parts that's built in Japan. As I understand it, both the LC and 4Runner are built in the same Tahara plant... by the same people... with the same key mechanical parts. From a reliability, durability, longevity point of view they should both last just as long as each other. I just can't see the LC being more reliable or tougher. For me I'm leaning toward the non-hybrid options so it would be between the 4Runner or GX550 and that comes down to use-case and price at the time I'll be in the market.
