- So it turns out... Nier is a pretty good character. Before we doom in the comments... I've played VS waaaay more broken characters. Nier is easily top #1 yes... but she can be beaten (just hard)

Shes "hard to play" in that optimizing her and routing out all her most complicated stuff on offense/in neutral is hard, but none of that is necessary to win. She's hard to play, easy to win with, basically.

I love it when the opponent really tryhards and works his ass off to get in and then Nier just presses her IWIN button and sends his ass back to the queue. Truly peak gameplay

DPs/Reversals are moves that never should be safe by design.
I think she is the only character who can use reversal without taking the risk of getting hit by a full punish.

I don't mind nier having amazing mix and combos right, but what breaks her for me is the DP. Having the best reversal in the game that is ridiculously hard to counterplay, leads into 50% and a 50/50 oki setup is insanity. If a character has this insane offense their defense should be lacking, her super skybound and ultimate reversal are fine but the heavyy dp has to go.
Yea I think Nier would still be strong even if her EX reversal was nerfed heavily... it's definitely the best thing about her.

It did survive a single patch. The next update isn’t even gonna have any gameplan balance lol
you can option select it. You meaty a close or a safejump and plink a spotdodge after the 2nd attack input for the chain. If she is DP'ing the spotdodge comes out after the first attack(canceled) and if she's blocking, you get the autoblockchain. So that reversal is annoying but manageable.
This and amount of damage she dishes out even in midscreen. You can easly loose 50% just from random bullshit she spews. I don't think I've seen any other character doing that outside the corner without using barely any meter.
i play as many puppet characters as i can get my hands on but nier is so strong rn that you dont really end up playing her like a puppet character at all.
That's because she's not a puppet character at all. She's a persona character. Death doesn't act independently of her, she has startup on all of Death's moves. She's not benefitting from a puppet that can cover her weaknesses if you can functionally play two characters at once, she just has a bunch of abilities that are very strong, easy to use, and break the game's normal rules; and she has them as long as she doesn't use up all 13 heart points in a round, which isn't much of a restriction.
Oh man that ending was brutal on my ears and also hilarious. I'd love to make a mod that changes over of her move voice lines to that 😂

I don’t hate here anywhere near as much as I hated Ferry back in season 1… but if she stays unchanged as long as Ferry was unchanged I may have a new most hated character in GBV
Ferry has been incrementally nerfed in just about every subsequent patch since launch. Sure at first it was small, like nerfs to dp timings but as time went on, bigger and bigger nerfs were happening, such as reducing all her clash values, the loss of 2h as a viable anti air, and genspenst no longer beating projectiles.
But even at ferry's peak, there are a few things nier can do that ferry could not, and those are to get full corner combo damage off just about any touch, get that damage off her dp, and on top of it all go into loopable 50/50 mix off basically anything, plus nier can bait out guard cancels as part of her mix. Ferry was busted, no doubt about it, but theres no way she was any more busted than nier is right now. Also the top tier who took the longest to recieve any nerfs was gran, who only recieved a nerf to his boot in season 2
It really sucks that such a cool character and concept with so much potential will now be permanently scarred by how crazy they were at launch.

While other characters were just as strong as she was at launch, she is the most infamous. Not cos she was uncontested strongest or anything (tho she was for a little bit immediately following the nerf of boot but that was cut short by the release of belial who proceeded to break the game and chased away many players), but because she is annoying to fight if you don't know how, regardless of her relative character strength
For some context:
Tho gran, kat and lance were similarly strong to her at launch, kat and lance were nerfed fairly quickly, ferry started getting nerfed incrementally every patch and gran was left alone until season 2 where he took a huge nerf to boot. Over time, gran, kat and lance started being treated like normal characters, being buffed and nerfed normally depending on the patch, ferry has recieved essentially only nerfs including huge ones, like the loss of 2h being a viable anti air and genspenst no longer beating projectiles.
Basically, she was top tier before so arcsys is basically neutering her at every possible turn. And I see that happening to Nier, cos no other character aside from Belial (but arcsys just always keeps him good for some reason) has recieved this amount of pure hate from the community until now. Belial was also very strong but he's strong because he is good or top in everything that he does, not mainly through gimmicks like nier and ferry are, and you can definitely see and feel the scars from launch ferry affect her even til now
This is how I felt with Leroy in T7. Great character concept forever having the stigma of taking EVO Japan 2020 into 7 Leroys vs 1 Julia territory.

Never have I seen Nier run out of Death stacks. Never have I seen a character with so much damage from a reversal in this game. And I totally do not understand why she has that super consistent 66+L into cl.M... on top of the setplay power she gets from any situation after making her opponent block.
Imho, she is borderline broken. Her kit makes absolutely no sense and does not fit the game philosophy at all. Make her keep her reversal but tune down the damage. Make her keep the setplay because that's defining her but also reward the player in defense for blocking patiently by depleting her stacks more quickly. I also want her cl.M tuned down. Why is it 6f and has this ridiculous range? She is not a rush down in your face type of character. Or add 2 frames to her 66+L making is 11f when plinked with dash button. Because even that advancing move is way too fast and goes too far.
Well that just means they're playing the character well
You only have 13 love stocks every time you buffer one of death skills into another one (so combo) you lose a stock every time you enhance a skill you lose a stock
This leaves nier without death for 20 seconds and her strength is increased during this time
Meaning you're actually getting mixed pretty badly if you didn't realize that they're actually not even using death
Whenever I play her I actually like using my stocks as fast as possible I don't want to waste them ready at the beginning or else that's just free hits but I do like the 20 seconds of enhanced and I like her normal attacks
Everyone actually plays her differently if you look using all sorts of combos that actually fit them
For me I'm not really a fan of characters that I have to use a lot of assists for and the only game I've ever played with a cyst actually being pretty crucial is Naruto Storm 2 and 3 so I'm used to fighting and throwing in a few assists here and there whenever I'm about to be in a corner or need breathing room or even just some time to think
I actually was one of the people who thought she isn't playable without death and death is actually the one being played more than nier rather than the other way around that's just how a lot of puppet characters tend to be
But my brother hates nier and I got him to play her just to prove a point and he managed to beat me without using death twice as were the conditions
Originally it was only supposed to be once but one of nearest basic attacks involves death so I counted that and we ran hands again
It is definitely possible and she definitely knows how to cook without death
It's just she has to be on the defense a lot and it's ultimately a disadvantage
But she could lead into grabs pretty well

It is a balancing mechanic that is absolutely not working as intended. By the time it even kind of begins to matter, you are 1 combo away from death with a character that gets that 1 combo from literally any touch.

I remember hearing everyone saying that shes everywhere. But i swear 90% of my matches are exclusively against Vira.
I've played against more Sieg and Vas tbh, though I've been taking a break for a bit so it's been 4-5 days. I've probably played 3-4 Nier with only one of those not just dying to Sieg far H~4S
vira is in the current f2p rotation so that might contribute to your encounter rate

Based. Nier, Lan-chan and Zeta have been giving me some serious trouble. I've been trying to get better with Uno and it has been extra tough taking so much damage off of making a wrong choice.(It makes me feel every choice I make is wrong.) Seeing how bad his conversions are and his lacking Anti-punishes it is a bit demoralizing seeing these characters take about 45-50% of my HP nearly whenever they land a hit. It is definitely a skill issue on my part but when 24 out of 115 Master players (when you took the information) it is pretty obvious that there is something too strong about a character. (I wouldn't say she is unfair but she definitely feels freakin' close. Those she ain't no Happy Chaos, so I can't be too agitated.)
Edit: I appreciate all the FFXIV music, even though I no longer play. Tsuyu's theme is one of my favourite and I'm glad you used it.
Zeta's U-Skills are a war crime. You'll be whooping that character's ass only to get baited into eating a j.22U and watch as the rest of the game slips away from you

I'm only currently S4 with Vaseraga but it's still weird how Nier feels like one of my easiest matchups. Even when fighting a Nier who is good, I feel like armor is a strong tool against her. Sometimes she'll use her DP and I don't even notice.
So, I'm struggling with lots of bad matchups except the broken SSS-tier everyone hates. It's a strange feeling.
I know that feeling. Learned the previous game with Vaseraga and was able to armor through a lot of stuff.
Well, the concept of a top tier mostly has to do with how many matchups a character wins. Nier could have a 1-10 matchup against one character and she’d still be top tier if she beats all the other characters.
When fighting game developers make a move for a character do they ever think of the counterplay measures to those moves, how much R&D goes behind a particular moveset is what ive always wondered.

You need to be plus about 40 frames, then you can just buffer a jump. More than about 45 plus frames and you need to delay slightly.

Another under-talked about part of what makes her insane is on top of everything else she pumps out insane amount of chip damage
A lot of potential routes to nerf Nier, the easiest two that I can think of that don't require making larger changes to her hit:
Higher damage proration on 623H starter. This move is single-handedly the largest pain point everyone has with the character, and it is pretty wild getting 40%+ of someone's health off a reversal with no CD.
Increasing usage of Love's Redemption, either through draining stacks on puppet hits, or an additional cost to special cancel certain moves (623H for example)
The amount of stacks won't change, since 13 is lore-significant for Death (13th Tarot)
Yeah, hearts need to matter more. I also think she needs to get fewer confirms. GBVS is almost notable in how big confirms are pretty specific. Not so with Nier who just automagically gets combos from any stray hit.

The amount of stacks used can be changed, letting the number 13 stay.
We're still in the early stages of the game, so despite talking about Nier i don't want to be too harsh on nerfs, but Death's stacks seems too good to me: i understand they wanted them to be 13 since the Death tarot card is the 13th of the bunch, but i feel like they're enough to spam her puppet moves forever. They should be enough for her to KO the opponent without going on cooldown if she plays better, but also scarce enough to make possible for a good opponent to force her into cooldowns, and as now i feel like the first situation is way more common than the second one.
I just don't want to get two-touched off of a counter. The reward she gets off of everything is insane.

Hey peeps, i started playing the free version of granblue a couple of days ago and i have a question. I'm getting to the point where ppl are using running light a lot and i noticed this gran player could get a Close Light after running Light. I'm playing Vira and i just cant get that to happen, i can never get close lights after running light, no matter what range, hit or block. Is that some kinda of tech or Gran just built different and i gotta hold the L for playing Vira lol
It’s a distance issue. Your dashing light pushes you out of range for the proximity of close light. It just happens that way for some characters. You might be able to get close medium, not sure tho

@@henriquerodrigues7795 It's just the character. Narmaya is exactly the same as Vira from what I played. Only her M is even worse. And then you look at character like Nier who can hit confirm everything. Kinda frustrating.

I feel like as the game goes on it'll be harder for Nier to do a bunch of stuff she can do now, but her kit and tools are still very good that I don't think it'll bump her down too much in terms of how good she is and what she can do.

Dawg I’ve been on fighting games over 15 years and I am a long timer lurker. If Diaphone made a 2 hour long video about Nier being broker and him actually getting to Master, I can you all don’t need to waste 2 hours to know she is busted.
Pleasantly surprised at the lack of "jUsT lEaRn ThE mAtChUp" and "jUsT bLoCk ThE dP" comments that I've seen regurgitated everywhere else, I know it's kinda rich coming from me, a zeta main, but holy hell, anyone who genuinely thinks people not understanding her is the reason for this character's absurdity is inhaling enough copium to kill a person.

Nier is such a good character thematically, especially since she's the first arcarum evoker and likely the only one we're gonna get for a while. But man, they really overtuned her. The top tiers in this game are just cooking everyone else, and it isn't even close. Hopefully a good balance patch comes around sooner rather than later to bring them in line.

I don’t even mind all the other shit (ok the balance is kinda ridiculous) I just think her character is annoying. I do not gel well with the “help me!!!! i am crying constantly!! (while I kill u and cut u to bits)” archetype.
I wouldn’t mind getting my shit stomped nearly as much if I weren’t getting hit by the “EYAAAAAH” every couple seconds. It is such a big deal that I also do not like fighting Vira because whenever she sweeps you she hits you with that “?”-ass question like yes omg stop hitting me with your good buttons I am a mediocre Seox I haven’t learned how to punish that yet!!!!
witter told me Grimnir is trash, so I won a tournament with him - winning the tournament with the worst character and saying that a character like nier is broken conflicts with each other, - this shows where the meta of the game is

I just find nier to be cool by design and the puppet gimmick of controlling death and will continue to play her. However I have vira as my 2nd main.
I might wrong, but I have been labbing it and can't you spot dodge the the first slices in the infinite blockstring and punish her with a button before the second swipe comes out? I get that she can counterplay that by not cancelling into them and throwing you but it should at least blow the Niers that over rely on it right?

I think the thing that makes Nier overtuned for me is the risk reward between the players. Nier can touch you and take a massive chunk of your bar. If you call her out, then unless you are in the corner you aren't getting as much of a high damage punish in return.

Yes you can spot dodge the first slice and punish her. You can also heavily punish her RS unblockable setup, just spot dodge her RS and than punish her with a full combo. In that senario, not only she gets punished but she lost 1 BP and a lot of heart stacks. You can also use a invicible super on reaction after her 236M+ 22L+ 623H+ 214H; the only way for Nier to be safe in that senario is to only input 236M, but like I said you can definetly react to 1 single input and multiple inputs. People like to complain but the reality is they don't even know the matchup.

That is the best character I've seen in awhile. And God forbid I vibe with a character. I will destroy everything. And I vibe with this character lol. Puppet players have to practice more. Have to be able to do 12 things at a time lol.
Learning the lingo is a separate goal to learning the game lol Anyone want to tell me what an "EX counter" is exactly? I couldn't even find this one in the big fighting games glossary.
EX moves are a GBVR concept where you spend 25% of your super bar to do a powered up version of a skill. EX Counter would be the EX version of her counter skill.

Ex skills in this game are H version of skills. These require no meter, but put that skill on an extended cooldown.
Ult skills are the ones that cost super, but you're also wrong about the cost. Ult skills all cost 50 meter to cast. However, when cast raw, most skills refund 25 meter, resulting in a net 25 meter cost. Any ult skill when cancelled into, as well as ult reversals do not refund the 25 meter. This is important be a use you cannot use an ult skill with only 25 meter, you must have 50, even if casting raw.
Ex moves are also not just a Granblue concept, games like SF6, or Uni all have EX moves. They always cost some sort of extra resource, most often Super meter, which is where granblue differs, since in GBVSR, the cost for EX is a cooldown. Ex versions usually have a significant power up attached. In GBFVR, its mostly extra combo potential, better frame data, or something of that nature.
Im starting to realize im one of the only people playing Nier like an actual puppett character and not just abusively spamming constat 66l into mix shit. And much to my detriment apparently lol. Idk man, i just like her cool lil mixes you can get midscreen unlike a lot of the cast, abusing this stuff doesn't seem as fun
Nier was by far the character I was the most excited to play on release because I love playing puppet characters (also Death's aestethic just speaks to me on a spiritual lv) and I gotta say that the devs delivered, however.... there is no denying that right now she is incredibly overtuned. She has the best offense AND defense in the game wich should not be allowed on a chracter like her, not to mention for some reason you cannot hit death while inactive and her regular super scales with your lack of resource (I'm fine with her SSBA working like that but her regular one is just too much). Hopefully the dev team wont break her legs on the 1st patch because I still think that she's incredibly fun just not when you are ageinst her.
it makes you question why she even has an unsummon skill when the puppet can't be hit while idle. there is no point in using it because the puppet will teleport to you 99% of the time for specials if it's too far away.

There's a lot more nier counter play now in s+ now. Kinda cramping my easy ranked climb lol. Id say the change i want for her to remove the 623H conversion but make it unsafejumpable like other parries. People are doing a lot better against it now using walk 5L instead of 66L in pressure to react dodge on hit or threaten throw instead of running face first into it
You weren't even serious with the character and ended up beating people who are. Crazy.
This is my problem with the difficulty tier list you made, and I commented on this back then - you claimed she was the single hardest character in the game pretty much, when the reality is that she's piss easy to achieve results with and just has a lot of room for optimization. That makes these lists really misleading for newbies trying to find a char to play.
Meanwhile, a newbie playing something solid and meh like Percival or Belial will not really get results, even though we labeled them as pretty easy characters to play.
From what I've seen, Nier is "only" top tier (not a level above the other current top tiers) when the opponent has extensive knowledge against every situation. But most people in ranked don't have this knowledge so she gets free wins, so getting to master rank does not reflect the situation accurately.
Yah most people don't even know when they can punish her. Last time I played ranked I was able to constantly perform her RS unblockable setup, if only those poor souls knew they just could spot dodge RS and punish my shit without waisting 1 BP or just standing there like a bunch of monkeys.
She's got that DNF brand DP, which would be fine if she were actually in that game and not this one. 😂

Sometimes i just give up trying to break her combo, it sounds so stupid. And sometimes the player isnt even that good, i lost to Niers who didnt block at all, just hit the DP and went ballistic. Her Kit is so overpower RN that sometimes is very boring to play. 4 out of 5 games are Niers.

we've done a pretty good job of complaining about nier, I don't think she'll survive the next big balance patch. Now I think we need to move onto complaining about Seox and Zeta so we can be free from those abominations too

Yes but it cots one heart to use Ex moves and if you cancel any special into an ex move it costs 2 hearts so it's fair that the recast is instant.
Dunno about it being fair. I wonder if she'd be more balanced with a similar cooldown system to everyone else.@@MarkAvatar2012
@@MarkAvatar2012 The problem with this is that you get enough hearts that the extra cost barely matters. You get so much value out of the instant cast that you can typically end a round before running out just because you have a massive resource advantage over your opponent who has to use their cooldowns on wake-up reversals or corner carry.

I hope you know that once she's out of stack she has to sit down for 20 sec and she can't even use supers in that state. Also, the fact that sometimes she ends the round with just half of her stacks just shows that some player don't even have the patience to defend. Do you even realize how much Nier has to pay in advance in order to set her mixups? I guess you don't, like 4 to to 5 hearts in a mixup that might be blocked. I agree her Dp has to go, it's really dumb, but you can't simply nerf her heart management without tuning the refresh time; all the proposed nerfs I've seen so far have the potential to bring this character to Zato level. I don't won't to sit down every 10 sec for 20 sec for finally be able to play a puppet character. Learn how to defend you scrub.
@@MarkAvatar2012 I didn't make any of those suggestions, so calm down. It's a waste of time to think of balance ideas in discussions like this because the devs are never going to see them, and even then who knows if that even fits with their balance philosophy.
As for everything else, look man, if you think she's not OP and that her only issue is her DP, I'm not gonna tell you otherwise since it's clear you're not gonna hear it. But the character is broken. I don't want her nerfed into the ground out of spite, I think she's cool and all that, but she's gotta come down.

im not familiar with this game but it sucks she's so good because her design is sick. i love her puppet and the whole vibe. its the worst when cool characters are cracked because people lose the appreciation for the character
