Katalina is a character that many consider to be among the weakest in the current iteration of Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising. Even with a meterless DP, fireballs, and some very far reaching active hitboxes, her lackluster ultimate moves and patient play should make you ask: is it worth getting her to Master rank in GBVSR?

The best part of playing Katalina is hitting people with the 3rd hit of her normal super, since nobody else plays her they don't know to block it :D
When i tried her out in the open beta that happened so much it was so funny
Depending on where the third hit lands on block, it can be hard to punish too, funny enough
at this point i use it as a mix up it happens so often
Nah I knew that since the first game rpg mode where she was the default first cpu ally
Also funny is when they spotdodge the first of the SBA, but then the 2nd hit catches the spot-dodge recovery

Honestly 60% of why she's bad, with the other 40% being that her pressure is so weak to 66L that you may as well just play neutral so you don't accidently give the opponent a free turn. She has the best normals in the game, but it really does feel like that's all she has sometimes.
Ultimately, the easiest character to learn and a great character to learn the game with, but easily the hardest to win with since you don’t have an explosive means of offense, nor a way to keep on the offense. Nothing plus besides a spaced fireball, and your entire gameplan is to play the matchup and punish any mistakes. If you can win with Kat, props to you.

It’s great to learn how to play the game with a “low tier” character. You are forced to win with good fundamentals instead of exploiting BS that can give you bad habits

I have been STRUGGLING to get out of S. I know I've been making a lot of mistakes, but the amount of times I've just lost after putting them in the corner and keeping them there for 30 seconds when they're just sitting and blocking there is disheartening.

@@uselesswasteofhumanflesh she doesn't have a lot of tools to do it. Commit to throw with a large tech window, really mid lows, no dashing overhead, and only the standard overhead ender to try and capitalize on.
If this was the Strive throws she'd be chilling.
Personally I'd love to see increased chip on her specials or 2L not being so bad, or 214U having guard crush also since it's pretty bad as an armor move anyway. Just to make it so people have to actually interact with her offense a little bit more.
Condition with falling L then dead jump into chain grab if you grab while falling it resets you and you catch them if they jump

My big issue with Kat is that for all the spacing you can do, 66L kinda ruins it for you. Yeah, you spaced your lunge to be -4. Guess what? That's a 66L opportunity for the opponent, and your only mixup there is to DP or to not DP. Spacing traps like that are pretty dang hard to use when there's a universal + on block advancing 8f move. Kat is built for the wrong game.

I think she is strong in every regard but not bs strong in any way. That makes her a very solid benchmark character and flawed at the same time because you need something op to compete with everyone and not have losing matchups.

Katalina was the first character that caught my eye in Granblue in general, so she's always been the character I wanted to learn. I just started my ranked journey a couple of days ago, and I really enjoy her. My return to fighting games after like 15 years hiatus was with Cammy in SF6. I reached my goals there and, after tiring of fighting the same 3 characters for 3 months, i decided to move on to other things.
Katalina feels like a Capcom Vs. SNK character to me, which I absolutely love. Even if she's bad, I want to see how far I can get with her. My initial goal is to get to S rank. After that, 2B will be the other character I pick up, being a NieR super fan.

My favorite character to play. She's surprisingly really fun
with hearing how middle of the road you feel Katalina is despite how solid her kit is, I would love to see you do Vaseraga next, compared to vanilla he feels awesome but compared to the rest of the cast and how strong the system mechanics/consistency are for him vs. anyone else it's suffering, but in a very rewarding way.
especially because Katalina is so polarizing for him, I have yet to play a Kata that doesn't body my shit hard as hell.

I've found that 214U pulls them out of the corner if it's the end of your combo. Would lead to something pretty dirty in a game without a block button...

And if someone don't mind helping me with 2 things real quick, I just started playing and it's my first fighting game. I've had some sessions against a friend trying a bunch of characters and looked through all the abilities of all the characters to see what i like. The ones i like the most are Yuel, Ferry, Zoey, Charlotta and Narmaya, and there's a few i kinda like but don't quite understand like Vira and Grimnir.
So firstly is there any of these characters where it would be better if i avoided as a completely new player?
Secondly, I like Yuel the most and she feels the most natural (despite her stance that feels a bit off), but idk if it would be best to just stick to one character, or if it would be fine to use a wide variety of characters even though I'm just starting? Any advice is much appreciated :))
For a short answer, I'd say stick to 1-2 characters that feel the best to you. Ideally 1 easier character that you can learn the game with, then transition what you learn to other.
It can be tough to juggle between multiple characters because there are many different match-ups to learn. Some characters are much more difficult than others. Narmaya, Zoey, Ferry and Grimnir are ones that can be very complex and they don't exactly have the "privileges" that some other characters have. They are still great characters though, they just need some more work than others.
I think Yuel is a good choice as she has 2 invincible moves, so her defense is a bit better than other characters and she is relatively simple to play. Vira and Charlotta are also good choices.
The only one of those I'd maybe say stay away from is Grimnir. Not because he is bad, but he could just be too difficult to grasp. Very set-up heavy and tricky, but with a high pay off if things go your way.
I mostly play Narmaya, so I'll say what I know about her quickly. She's got good tools, but she can be tough to optimize. Between her stance switching combos and the fact that she has 2 sets of skill cooldowns to keep track of, it can be rough but it's enjoyable to me because it makes me want to optimize her as much as possible. So I'd say if you want to focus on Narmaya, Zoey, Ferry or Grimnir, you should either solo main them or duo main one of them. They are characters that are harder to master, but can feel more rewarding to play once you learn them.

I wish they'd give her armored unique more hits of armor similar to Zeta and Vaseraga. It's fine as is for punishing pokes, but just utterly falls apart to 66L, fast pressure, and multi-hitting moves (all of which are extremely prevalent and even dominating in Rising).

Tell me when you want to get Anila to master. I can give you my notes for setups and stuff thenm. She is very much like Katalina in that she has pretty much no sauce, but has all the tools. But a lot of decent stuff like many safejumps. Katalina is more poke-heavy and Anila is basically more fireball heavy.

Katalina is my favorite character, especially design wise, and uh. I'm not gonna sugar coat it, I'm completely fucking ass, but honestly as someone who's slowly getting interested into learning the game more so I can stop being ass. I noticed almost nobody was playing her and wondered how good she truly was-

If you are very good on footsies and mindgame in general and usually a shoto player, you definitly can go really far with Kat. But yeah you will feel that you have to exert twice as much effort to achieve the same result

I am a beginner and I enjoy Katalina very much. But damn, do I agree that she's missing that bullshit factor. On the other hand I think this improves my fundamentals way better than if I just learned to abuse a broken top tier character right away.
I think characters like Katalina, Percival, Zoe, etc. without strong Ultimate Skills need to have them changed. Trying to play against characters with actually good Ultimate Skills is such an uphill battle because they can threaten any range while you're stuck playing vanilla GBVS

I mean she is an honest character but for me I like her for her that and her character in general at least for me personally as she my favorite waifu in Granblue. I know most of the time in fighting games BS stuff that characters can do have more chance of winning but to me I think I enjoy which while I have been playing other shoto's like Gran, Sieg, Anila there something about Kat that I just like playing her. Sure, those other character has what she has but better or more better tools. As a person trying to get better at fighting game, I like playing a simple but fundamental character even if other characters can outshine her. But I'm still gonna want to stick with her as my main more the most part.

i still think that 66l nerf, or fix, will solve most of the balance problems of this game. So i am out until patch. Half the movements of the whole cast are made too risk to try by the simple existence of 66l.

The problem is she is a shoto in a game full of way better shoto. It’s the Ryu problem in SF6
As a newcomer to this game, and someone who mains Ky in gg, i figured kat was probably the best character for me to learn this game with and i do enjoy her kit, but now im at a decent level, its a struggle.
Im considering switching to Vira since she's pretty similar, but actually good.

She doesn't. It's one move, the game's UI and simple input system just expect a character to have four special moves. Some characters only have three, so one of their moves ends up doubled on the cooldown cards.
