Kyle - Hey John, so I just read an article from ScreenRant about the novelization of TROS stating Palpatine's mind just went into a clone and that's how he survived now. This completely retcons what the visual dictionary said and it's giving me a headache thinking about which is canon. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks!

In the movie Palpatine looks like he's on life support and NOT a clone.
He couldn't be a clone on life support?
Palpatine 99
I been saying that for the past two months that Palpatine was a clone, it was common sense. You seen the Snoke Clones. Sith Eternals use Dark Science, Dark Science is like the science you see in Black Mirror. And they use Sith Alchemy and Sith Occultnism. Its part of Palpatine contiency plan. Maybe this was the idea behind the science labs in Jakku. The sequels was pretty much based on Dark horse Comics back in the 90s.
@@VogtTD accelerated cloning aging like in the clone wars.
It couldn't contain his spirit hence the life support thingo.
For me ,the Skywalker Saga ended with Return of the Jedi. The rest is just disposable.
Except Rogue one
@@BasicMindset001 Hell yeah, that movie is underrated big time
Completely agree, I ignore the prequels and sequels and only bother with the originals. (Rogue One isn't part of the Skywalker saga and I also enjoy that)
For me the skywalker saga ended with a new hope trailer
Agreed and Rogue One included!!
My theory is that he died at the end of Return Of The Jedi and this is just Disney fan fiction. That's what my canon says anyway.
The Film Effect The post Endor Disney content is not Canon for me. It is all fan fiction
That's official Canon, the Disney movies are very elaborate and expensive fan fics
I love Force Awakens and I loved parts of Last Jedi/Rise of Skywalker. But yeah, after this latest Palpatine thing, I have to admit what I've tried not to admit - The 'Star Wars' canon for me is Phantom Menace through Clone Wars through Return of the Jedi. That's it. The rest, I'm not gonna be bothered with as much and just enjoy them as an extra stuff. That's just me, I dont mind other people/new generation enjoying them. I love Mandalorian so far though and we'll see where that goes.
@@martinjrgensen8234 Even Mandalorian, and the future Ahosoka Cartoon is fan fiction to you?
@@trylobyte07 What about the rumored Ahsoka Cartoon?(that's set after Episode 6)
I said it when the force awakens came out and i say it now: if i have to read a book to understand your movie, your script sucks!!!
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
The same with world building. If you can't get world building into your scripts, Then you can't create Star Wars content. George's vision was a family drama with a complex world. He packed all these cool details into one trilogy. And continued in the prequels.
You dont have to read the book to understand it. The clone thing has been EU material for almost 20 years.. its nothing new. Seeing the vat of cloned body parts? not hard to understand. They make the book so they can explain it to the kids who have no awareness whatsoever.
If he is a clone shouldn’t he be younger and more powerful and also less deformed. I doubt Palpatine would speed up The Clone ageing process
Accelerated ageing /growth is what they did with Republic Clone Army
Sith ertnals did it.
@@senpaigarrthe sith believe in Immortality while the Jedi believe in Eternity. Sith use Dark Science to Clone and use Genetic Engineering to expand Life Expectancy but you can still die from this. The Jedi believe in force ghost. When you a force ghost then you cant die because you live eternally.
I think that was matt Smith role saying there was a younger version of him but fuck it, whats done is done
They're just throwing shit out. They got no plans.
I was one of the few people loved The Force Awakens AND The Last Jedi. But Rise of Skywalker absolutely crushed me , they really fucked it
Rory Lennon I liked 7 and loved 8 even tho it wasn’t what I would’ve done it was executed in an amazing way. The themes, the performances, the script, the explanations were very fleshed out. It wasn’t what people would’ve done in their fan scripts but 8 left Star Wars in a really interesting and different sort of light. Episode 9 was a movie made to appease brain dead trolls on the internet...I watched ep 8 again and it was a massively better movie as a whole.
@@calebdesjardins616 in a parallel universe episode 8 would be ok but it's what made 9 a shitshow and almost killed the damn franchise! I admit I did like ep 7 because it wasnt a surprise twist or a lore breaking mess like Ros, but instead it was just a solid universe building movie and it all went to shit with ep 8 in all honesty COULDVE been really good
7 was great. 8 was ok. 9 was disastrous. I really don’t want to see another Disney Star Wars Movie in the theaters for a while.
@@calebdesjardins616 I really agree.
A part of me is so annoyed at all people whogot so angry at episode 8 because that's the reason we got ROS.
The Duel of the Fates script sounded so much better and more satisfying.
You liked tlj? Troll
Lmaooo this entire trilogy was a mess 😂😂.
It wasn’t before TROS.
Indiana Solo I’m just speaking the facts cause it is now. They literally had no plan at all.
Trevel The Critic Fair enough. But I thought it was lining up well with TFA & TLJ. But yeah, TROS truly screwed it up.
@@BigBossMan257 It derailed Abrams' plans but it didn't derail the story. They should have just went with the ending of The Last Jedi instead of trying to course correct it.
@@MatiZ815 I disagree. Why should JJ respect Rian's vision when Rian didnt respect JJ's?
This just illustrates what Lucas and Filoni brought to the table: a knowledge/passion for the franchise. Say what you want about those first 6 films/Clone Wars, but they all made sense. There's no giant plot holes or leaps in logic. Everything just works.
Agreed.... That why we need passionate people of SW to make SW
Totally agree dude. I used to be a prequel hater and I still think some lines in the script are soo dumb and some really cheesy characters but it alll makes sense and there was a clear vision and it’s still Star Wars. There was incredible world building and there was an overarching story.
That’s not really true though. There’s loads of stuff in the ‘original six’ that makes no sense. Right from the moment where, it a world of droids, the empire let R2 and Threepio escape in a pod in the early scenes of New Hope.
I put plenty of blame with the fans for this mess. Rian Johnson came in with a well made film and pulled the series in a few interesting directions, but the over the top backlash from possessive so called “fans” resulted in this ridiculous fan fic mess that was TROS. We needed passionate, original people like RJ working on Star Wars, and instead the ending of the franchise was left to JJ the recycler Abrams. Hope the angry internet mob is happy.
@@Vlowman No they didn't. They escaped and then Vader dispatched Stormtroopers to track down the plans on Tatooine.
I would have accepted if Snoke was the villain and was a clone but bringing back the Emperor without explaining it in the movie is garbage.
pretty obvious he was a clone judging by the vat of multiple snoke body parts on exegal.... not that hard to determine
how is that obvious lol are you sure that wasn't the orginial Palpatine ?
Just torch this new canon.
Love John's nerdy rage, love RMB's thoughtful reflection. Both spot on.
I don’t know whether to laugh or to cry when it comes to Star Wars, so frustrating .
Jonathan Freyone how are you gonna kill all the Skywalker’s??? And then leave her alive! We need the bloodline to live on! This is bullshit
I seriously don’t know why novelizations are made. I feel like creative talent should use all their ideas and flesh them out, as much as possible, for whatever story is being told in the original medium, rather than have novelizations to help understand everything better. That shows the creative talent didn’t tell a story properly in its original medium.
No, it doesn't. By its very nature a film will be constrained by it's runtimes. Novels have been around for decades.
@@1dannyefc Runtime is not the problem it's the use of the runtime that is the big problem with Star Wars . They filled the early part of Rise of Skywalker with a pointless McGuffin subplot when they should have been dealit with Palpatine first
@@TheSt1092 But again, what does this have to do with a novel? Why is giving people another way to access the story a bad thing? It's frankly an absurd position.
I would disagree for Rogue One at least. The novelization for that movie is fantastic and gives much insight to characters that were never going to be fleshed out before the film's release. Given how doomed the story was from never having a better setup, I figured it was the best they could do. But the novelization to Ep9 isn't a fleshing out, it's thinking of solutions post movie to fix details that were blatantly needed and missing.
Palpatine being a clone is way better then him surviving the Death Star. This is how it should have always been by bringing in the legends storylines into cannon
imminent82 But it does go against the visual dictionary that he was “found” by the Sith Eternals.
jaybling yeah I think we all agree the cloning is better, but it still doesn’t change the fact that they keep flip flopping
I agree that cloning is better, but they never explained it at all in the movie. It's just an afterthought and proof that they had no plan for this trilogy.
@@metallicnole4514 The proof that they had no plan was The Last Jedi. None of the tone and barely any characterization survived from Force Awakens
@@kennethbryant5819 Probably one of the worst mistakes KK made was letting rian Johnson write the script for TLJ with no oversight. It was all downhill after that.
I freaking almost choked to death from John's Fart Flower comment. I love ranting John. Hahaha!
This goes back to the question that I asked you in December, John. Why does JJ consistently omit explanation of anything of substance in his movies?
That is worry we all should have from now on
Because of that damn mystery box!
Because there was no vision for this films, they just made stuff up as they went a long.
Say what you want about George Lucas, but he at least had a general vision for his 6 films.
Some stuff worked, some stuff didn't worked, under GL, but at least there was a cohesive overall story. He at least knew where he was going, even if there were changes during the journey.
Explanation would slow things down. For instance, what was in the briefcase during *_PULP FICTION' (1994)...?_* I don't know. You don't know. Neither of us needs to know. Imagine. Damn.
redxsage there are just some things that need explanation and this was one of them. It takes literally one to two lines of dialogue.
There is nothing in the visual dictionary which explains Palpatine's return. Some reports state that the visual dictionary says that the Sith Eternals discovered Palpatine and brought him back using 'technology and the occult'. In fact it says such approaches were used to 'bring forth unnatural embodiments of the dark side', which could mean a wide range of things. On the topic of how Palpatine returned there is nothing for the novel to contradict. I don't think it's fair to say that Disney is digging a hole or changing its mind. It is fair to say that it's taking them a long time to reveal how he returned.
FART FLOWER??!! This term is now cannon😂😂🤣🤣
The implied message in the movie was a line from Pipen or whoever that involved words like "Cloning, dark side magic, secrets only the sith knew." That line gave me the answer i thought... and the novel confirms it. Long live the JJ cut.
IMO Palpetine was a last minute addition. Abrams didn't know what to do after Last Jedi and this is what we got....mass confusion lol
This was one of my potential theories as to how he survived, down to that the cloned body was unable to contain his spirit. I wish they would have just explained is that way. All it needed was an extra 10-15 seconds to say that "after my body was destroyed, my spirit lingered, and my followers cloned a body for my spirt to inhabit. The process is imperfect and this vessel deteriorates." Done! I would have been fine with that!
Still the other scenes with him and final "fight" sucked
Makes no fucking sense but alright I guess fans can agree that it makes sense for a guy to get cut in half and survive because “his spirit lingers” but they can’t agree that it makes sense that if a ship crashes into another ship, the ships will be damaged. Holy fuck
Sounds too much like right...smh
Would have be suffice just to backup their terrible ideas on how Palpatine still alive.... I would have accepted it even though I don't really like it
So you prefer it to be like the character knows there is an audience that needs to know exactly what he is up to otherwise how will the movie he is in possibly make sense.
The writers of the book must have confused Star Wars with Altered Carbon!
I'm sick of them explaining important plot points in their novels, I feel like more thought went into their novels than the trilogy itself
This is totally on Kathleen Kennedy. As the boss of all things Star Wars, she needs to work better overseeing these projects to ensure they tell the plot points appropriately.
It was mentioned in the movie....Oh and name some other important plot points that come from any of the ST novels? I'll be waiting...
@@1dannyefc it was definitely mentioned in the movie. Someone was paying attention - good on you
@@crini413 There was a single line in the movie to basically handwave it away. They didn't explain anything. It was hard to even take it seriously.

@@johncampea While Kennedy has done a very poor job as President of Lucasfilm she's still a great producer.
Sounds like the visual dictionary completely fits with the clone theory. Clone body being possessed by his spirit which was the occult side of the thing mentioned in the VD
“Blossom into this huge fart flower”
Oh John 😂😂😂😂
There was a scene in Rise of Skywalker where Dominic Monaghan's character said "Dark science, cloning, secrets only the Sith knew".
Jurassic Park #1 Fan Except for maybe the entire planet of Kamino. 🙄
That's really a throw away line. To suggest that that is enough to explain Palpatine coming back is laughable. It's trying to handwave away all the myriad of complications it opens up. I'm sure it worked fine in the EU, but it needed more fleshing out to make sense for the movie. Most movie goers don't read the books.
And yet at a recent comic con Ian McDiarmid himself said JJ cut the ‘more than a clone, less than a man’ line from the movie. What a mess.
I’m glad he’s a clone because it means anakin completed the prophecy of the chosen one

I always thought he was a clone. That's the way I understood it in the movie when I saw those clones of Snoke.
Exactly. There was a cloning machine with snoke clones RIGHT THERE and the hobbit mentioned it in the movie. But people want all plot points spoonfed to them - then complain about too much exposition if they are
Yeah, exactly. Thank you!
That made it appear that the emperor had cloned Snoke and had been running things behind the scenes. His burnt fingers, made to seem it was from end of RoTJ. Nothing in that scene points to Palps being a clone.
@@bmoon4535 To me it did and that was the only logical explanation for me. There's no way Palps' body could have survived that fall and explosion. He owned a clone army in the past, he cloned Snoke and it only made sense that he cloned his own body.
*eyes the cactus in the corner*
I am not even sure what is “canon “ and what isn’t “canon”. Too much contradiction.

Smartest vllain in movie history broadcasted his return in 16 hours to the whole galaxy
So they could come attack him in a place where his ships shields don't work. By following a map written on a knife.
Why wouldn’t he clone a young version of himself to put his spirit into?
‘Yo set up my clone body just in case something goes wrong.’ Cloners: ‘oh you want us to make you young?’ Palp: ‘nah fuck me up’
Having Snoke be Darth Plagueis, the main villain of the trilogy, would’ve been much better than the mess we got.
All of this is a direct result of Snoke being killed off in the 2nd movie.
“Today in stupid “😂😂😂😂😂
This is EXACTLY what myself and channels like Geeks+Gamers have been saying about Lucas Film since The Last Jedi. We’ve known Lucasfilm doesn’t care about the mythology of Star Wars or canon for a LONG time. People have called us crazy and now more left wing channels and the media are FINALLY starting to realize what we’ve been saying the entire time lol
Eric Wilhelm except channels like Geeks+Gamers were overly hostile with your opinions.
Kiahran Adams Well I’m not a republican and I said nothing about race, gender, or politics. But ether way it’s all good :)
Indiana Solo this is meant in a non confrontational way, just pure curiosity. What have they said that makes you feel they are too hostile?
Eric Wilhelm Destroying DVD’s, throwing toys, calling fans of the movie names, etc.
Indiana Solo Never seen them throw DVD’s or Toys, but also not denying that so I have no comment. As for calling fans of Star Wars names, I’m curious what names they use? Only one I know is Reylow’s. They aren’t calling fans that, because they them selfs are fans. Just a few select people. Which describes this weird obsessions some people have with getting Kyle and Rey together after he has physically and more so mentally abused and kidnapped her (mainly TFA). It’s like thinking a girl who was kidnapped and beat up in real life, should stay with her abuser, which is basically what happened in these films lol Again I can’t stress enough that I’m not trying to “attack you” just trying to understand :) This is the internet after all and as I’m sure you know, things get misinterpreted by just reading it lol
The force awakens novel also had poe and rey meet right after the events of the movie so I wouldn’t really take this as canon
pizza in the force awakens Rey walks past Poe. There’s even a scene where Poe is waving goodbye to Rey when she takes off in the falcon in the end. Does Poe even know who he’s waving to ?!?!?!! So garbage
Fart Flower,LOL...Oh John and his catch phrases.
You are in no way what so ever over reacting. When you get this passionate about sports no one would say that, so they shouldn’t about science fiction.
Amen.
II have to say I feared he was a clone when he said to his Sith disciples "Look what you have made" If they wanted to go down the cloning route they should have a younger 'Prime' Palpatine who is aged between 20-35 played by a younger actor like Matt Smith . There really was no point Ian Mcdiamid coming back.
But why was palp's clone hooked on a machine?
What you’re feeling now, I’ve been feeling since the force awakens...it’s agonizing.
If we go back even further to the original acquisition video with Kathy and George sitting at the table discussing the deal. She said implicitly that George would still be the torch bearer in the same way he was in the OT. Not having him as a guiding rod to plan out the trilogy when he did in fact give them treatments for 7-9 just comes off so incompetent and clueless. Maybe in a few years Disney and Lucasfilm will realize that they can call up George and that he's still alive.
Aftab: "It cannot be, the Emperor is dead!".
Beaumont: "Dark science, cloning, secrets only the Sith knew".
They basically spelled it out.
THANK YOU. This is exactly what I was thinking about!
No they didn’t I’m sorry but random guy #67 saying that meant nothing as why would this fucking random dude immediately guess how Palps lived. If Leia said it or even Rey or fuckin Luke people who actually have the force or fought him in the past it would be taken seriously
@@battlefrontarchives By your logic you're some random guy we shouldn't listen to about this. Instead we'll listen to the script of the film.
Oh and WAY to rip off dark empire and literally make a worse version of it, but lucasfilm claiming they had no past source material. F off.
agathis robusta which one 2 30 or 3hr and 2 huh didn’t know random guy had so many fans
And just because they didn’t say specifically that Palpatine was cloned, that element has been a big part of Star Wars, it was mentioned albeit in passing in the actual movie, and the emperors vague explanation via the call back to episode three seem to be the “good enough” they need. It’s an interesting situation to demand more explanation when mystique and vagueness has sufficed in the past.
Correction* a faulty clone who wasn’t force sensitive
Definitely agree with Campea on this one, the lack of plan is the reason I lost my excitement for Star Wars last year... Mandelorian having that well thought out 8 episodes was very refreshing cuz you could tell there was a plan there, a small one compared to a plan needed for the movies but a plan none the less
Yes john let the hate flow through you ;)
LMAO "FART FLOWER"........EPIC
Antwan Lewis 🤣🤣
There was NEVER a plan. They clearly made this "trilogy" up as they went along. If the so-called filmmakers don't care, then why should I?
"WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU MEAN SITH ETERNALS!!!???"
I'd love to see John question these writers.
"today in stupid" lol
It actually is explained in the movie. “Cloning. Secrets only the Sith knew.”
Hardly an explanation. More like hand waving away.
Recently in an interview with Ian McDiarmid, the Emperor himself, he said there was a scene in which Kylo Ren asks him if he's a clone and Palpatine replies, "More than a clone, less than a man."
Palpatine was associated with a character who learned how to cheat death, and yet they've come up with every stupid explanation BUT that. Mind boggling. What is Lucasfilm on right now? How is this justified as good storytelling?
DavidC1776 Darth Plaguies only learned to create life. Cheating death was something Palpatine made up to turn anakin to the dark side. If Plaguies learned to cheat death then how was he killed in his sleep?
A fart flower may be the worse flower ever created...... 🤣🤣🤣
I don’t know why but I always interrupted the movie implying he was a clone. Like the only “explanation” given was the little line the one resistance fighter said. It was something like “cloning. Smith alchemy” and so like, to me that kind of just made me always assume he was a clone. That and the fact there was a tank full of snokes I think also definitely implied cloning.
I feel like I was the only one who saw Palpatine as a clone via essence transfer and was implied in the movie 😬.
I love the imagery a blossoming fart flower, with that notable bouquet. 😆
I may have been stretching to make it work for me. But Palpatine’s line “I have died before.” Implies that he was a clone.
Remember when we thought they were going to simplify the canon.
Love the title lol
Brilliant video title! :D
John's Star Wars coverage is starting to overlap with r/saltierthancrait what a time to be alive
And yet at a recent comic con Ian McDiarmid himself said JJ cut the ‘more than a clone, less than a man’ line from the movie. What a mess.
Love the title tho lol
But agree on the point. They need to make up their minds on what is supposed to be cannon and not and actually go through with it. It's obvious that this trilogy wasn't pre-planned.
So basically the same thing they did in Legends Canon.
Love the passion.
Ahhhhh, the old "Professor X in his twin-brother" routine.
Rob summed it perfectly in one of his statements:
It's a slap in the face to fans.
As a fan, I get disinterested whenever creators of shows or movies disrespect a fan's intellect. Keep doing your amazing work John. Been following you for years and. Thanks for being motivation and inspiration.
Love the title
🤣🤣🤣🤣 This rant is so funny I have it in one of my playlists! While it’s always best to keep fan-related frustration in perspective, it’s fine to feel how you feel about the stories that matter to you. I agree that the contradictions regarding the Emperor are problematic. Star Wars benefits from attention to detail. When they get sloppy with it, it hurts the installment in question. Darn it if I don’t absolutely love 9 anyway. There’s just something about that movie that brings me great joy. Thanks for the thoughtful coverage, y’all! Best. 💯👍🏻❤️🙏
*The clone body could barely contained his power, which explains why his clone body was on life support.*
I like palpatine being a clone was better explained than seeing that the palpatine that we say was from episode 6. I wrote the question on Saturday on open mic that palpatine from ros was a clone was confirmed by novel of ros, I watched first Star Wars theory confirmed then everybody stared to say that palpatine being a clone with palpatine spirit make sense I like it more.
Very very very well said Robert! Absolutely correct sir.
We're in the age of film where instead of putting exposition in the actual movie, we put it in a book nobody's going to read.
Fart Flower! My new go-to statement for when someone is BSing me.
In the old Dark Horse comics, he had many clone bodies, because they wear out.
The "science" used to keep Palpatine alive obviously involved cloning. There is no contradiction...
I mean I just assumed that his coming back was somehow related to cloning when I watched the movie.
Preach John, preach!
I'm over 7 mins in and Rob Burnett has yet to be able to speak a word.
If they wanted to go the clone route they should’ve went all in and made it the contingency plan of the emperor who planned all along if he died to have clones setup and ready to move forward with his plan. A cloning facility on jakku explained....it just seems like in the cannon there’s enough cloning storylines to have made it really cool instead of an afterthought. Agree with you John. Clear that they aren’t paying attention to cannon let alone connecting it
I’m sorry, every time this dude says “guns and roses fan club” I lose my shit laughing! So right
As annoying and messy as it may be, In legends Palpatine had several clones with the intent of being able to transfer his life force into another body. Its not like 'He Is a Clone', he used a clone backup body to transfer into because his character is obsessed with back-up cobtingency plans and obsessed with living forever and cheating death.
Luke gathered up Vader before the Death Star blew up.
It just shows you that they were making it up as they went along with no real plan. They knew what they wanted in the end and didn't care how they got there.
Fun Fact: Darth Vader, Luke, Lea, and Han...and EVERYONE who died in the Star Wars universe, are all alive and well...Only the clones died. Thank you Disney!!!!
In the movie they bring up he's a clone or a concoction of evil science so I don't get the big deal about the book confirming what's been practically stated already in the movie
But the movie's trash tho so i think we're alliwed to use bad arguments just because it's Disney!
We actually saw in Return of the Jedi, his essence leave the body. The blue energy left his body and could have went to a clone. Makes way more sense then the no answer of the movie.
Why didn't they just let Kylo double down on darkness, choose an apprentice, or run the knights, see them go to far, kill almost everyone on the opposition besides leia, and him come to a moment of weakness in the darkness, and tear through the first order. That's a skywalker storyline.
The rant is strong with this one!
With the Timothy Zahn book where Papiltine did come back (briefly, at the end of the trilogy set of books) as a clone, I don't understand how he could be anything else but a clone. Why is this a surprise?
It doesn't actually retcon The Visual Dictionary since that book was pretty vague in of it self, and I actually think this is the best way to explain his resurrection. Since the idea was already put out there in the old legends continuity and it was even hinted at in the movie.
Disney never had a clue what they were doing with Star Wars, and they keep proving it every day.
The problem is greed. Disney want ppl to buy all of the comics, books, etc so they put it all on equal footing. Should have kept the old way where films were canon and everything else was underneath it.
Now with everything on equal footing you have films or tv shows deliberately leaving undeveloped characters or plot points so it can later be filled with spinoff books, comics, or tv shows.
