Imagine making the most anticipated trilogy of the biggest movie franchise ever without having a plan.
Scandalous ain’t it 😂 4 billion pounds spent and no plan
The balls right?!
They needed to recoup the 4billion they spent as soon as possible.
Sure Disney had a plan buy star wars from George Lucas, exploit the intellectual property, MONEY MONEY MONEY that's how far the thinking went lol
We don't have to imagine because it happened :/
Sequel trilogy was just Disney trying to make a quick buck with no plan.
they are ads for selling toys?
Rob is spot on here, Disney made the arrogant decision to not have a plan because they assumed any film called Star Wars would be a guarenteed win.
but they were, all three wins, unfortunately, NOT on artistic terms, only in financial ones, which is what the execs give a shit about :(
Statistically there’s a high percentage of CEOs and similar roles that test as clinically “sociopathic”. This would explain perfectly their disregard and disrespect for the franchise and SW legacy fans..and only caring about profits.
There’s a high chance this sequel trilogy was actually helmed by ‘psychos’’.
@@stvnsvids True, they still made 1 billion at least on all three films, but each one was less as the last one, with Solo costing them a lot more, perhaps unfairly as that was actually a decent film.
Henry Arriaga ehhh would not say the profit was great for the last 2 especially the last one.
He is half right. However Disney did not do the terrible choices here. It was the Lucasfilm higher ups.
Remember the Captain Phasma and Snoke hype? What a let down!
IKR
Argh don't remind me another waste of characters. At this point it seems intentional
krisj827 Right. I wanted to find out more about Snoke. Thought there’d be some backstory about him but no.
I was so hyped for Phasma. I thought she was gonna end up being a bad ass character and she turned out to be a joke. Ugh. Snoke was also kinda badass in TFA and was basically turned into a joke with TLJ.
Classical J.J Abrams like all his movie trailers promoting false material.
Say what you want about the prequels in terms of writing, acting and the overuse of CGI, but at least the vision was consistent.
Spore6001 Here! Here! AMEN!
Absolutely
Exactly!
GL should of done what he did with the OT and get a proper director and a strong producer, instead he directed (which he was poor at) and his producer were just yes men rather than challenge him.
GL is BRILLIANT at coming up with a quality story, but he just isn't great at transfering that from paper to screen.
I think everyone is looking at the prequels with a fresh set of eyes
I feel so bad for Daisy Ridley. She tried her best, but she was little to work with.
Shes a good actress, she is very good when you let emote, when you let her act. Disney, Lucasfilm juat gave her resting sad face and a terrible story. Did she ever smile in those movies. I dont blame the actors, I blame the people who told her to act. I wish her the best of luck. I hope she gets the funk of these movies off of her.
@@isacctavares1368 They do that a lot with female characters, like they think emotions make them weak or something. Or they think it's easier not to offend if everyone is stoic. It's weird, Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor's best moments are the emotional ones.
@@clockstomper Great point. Sarah losing control in T2 when she was going to kill dyson is prime example of her emotion, and we remember her. She is not afraid of emotion. Your right. Female characters have devolved from bad ass icons to boring, stoic. Thank god they let Wonder Woman smile in her own movie.
I feel Bad for them cuz they work so well togeather and they’ll never do it again
@@scorpionx7044 heck i also feel bad for Mark hammial you think they had it bad he watched his legacy get destored
Boyega was upset abut them promising a good character and the throwing it in the trash
John mentioned Anakin is a way better Jedi than Rey and yes he is
Lord of the Rings is the perfect model, make all 3 together under one unified team.
Same with MCU’s Captain America trilogy.
Even Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy had more vision besides studio interference by the end.
@@keegantheplayer not the same. There were different teams and then Disney acquired them and the story of the trilogy was woven into the avengers films
It’s much easier for lord of the rings. They have an entire three books to just adapt.
@@mazengwe28 not matrix and Nolan said he did not want to make a sequel
This deal is getting worse all the time.
I am altering the deal. Pray, I don't alter it any further.
On top of that, the gaming rights are with a shitty ass "english words cant express my frustration and disbelief" gaming company that doesnt give a fuck about stories and has made only TWO star wars games in 5 years!!! Why did lucas sell the franchise?
@@hellotheir1427 you know why ಠ_ʖಠ
Oh it's definitely getting altered further
Unfunny.
Feel so bad for many of the actors, but particularly Daisy. I still remember the video of her watching the trailer for the first time and crying tears of joy
My soul screamed, "yaaaas!!!" When RMB said, asked why JJ gets the keys to that kingdom. WTF! He isn't Spielberg!
Well, to be fair, JJ had a stellar track record prior to Star Wars and he wasn't exactly given the keys to the kingdom. He was given the key to restart the kingdom and was brought back to finish it off after insane mismanagement by KK and Lucasfilm.
@@nikunjdixit1175 JJ can't tell a complete story over a series to save his life. This was demonstrated first with Lost, and we saw how the Star Trek movies got progressively worse. That said. The blame for the lack of planning of the ST story falls squarely on Kathleen Kennedy.
@@marlock6573 I think you mean SW, not ST. Honestly, I find it hard to put too much blame on JJ regarding SW. TROS screams of reactionary studio driven film making. So I blame KK for not figuring out a basic structure for a trilogy which seems like a pretty basic requirement. I love his ST movies so I have no issue with JJ in that scenario.
@@nikunjdixit1175 No, I mean Star Trek. Into Darkness and Beyond are bad movies that barely broke even, and JJ can't get financing to continue the Kelvin timeline series, so it's dead.
Marlo Ck Well, I disagree. I think all three Kelvin movies are great. Not to mention, Beyond is not a JJ movie. And Beyond is actually the only one which struggled financially.
Absolutely agree with Robert. Completely asinine from Disney and Kennedy

I can't wait for the documentary and or book about the making of the sequel trilogy.
The making of has to be a fascinating story of incompetence.
I hope Mark Hamill puts out a tell all book someday.
Book? Documentary? Doug, there will be MULTIPLE VOLUMES and DOCUMENTARIES about this galaxy-sized mess. Tell-Alls galore!
The Disaster ArtistS
The Prequels started off poorly, and ended on a high-note.
The Sequels started off on a high-note, and ended poorly.
As stated by the great Hawkeye in Endgame: "Hold on. Don't shoot. Do you see where you're going? Ok. Now let's see how we get there."
This trilogy was a disaster!
What a good comment -_-
When you realise that the only good one is the remake of ANH (that won't admit it's a remake of ANH)...
Well yes, it's undeniable.
@@cybertron4618 i wasn't saying it wasn't true, but OP could've put some effort in telling us why he thinks the sequel trilogy was a disaster!
@@iannisakrivos53 Anyone who doesn't think it's a remake at this point is lying to themselves, and no, it wasn't good. Not any better than the remake of Return of the Jedi (Rise of Skywalker).
@@iannisakrivos53 what no that movie was horrible too...like so many plot holes after plot holes after plot holes.
Decent of the three, yes but not good.
Here's a crazy idea. Since it was the Skywalker Saga, how about intoducing the kids of the solos and skywalkers and have their adventures.
Yeah I wanted Rey to be Leia and Han's daughter
Rob is 100% correct.
I've been saying this since the Last Jedi.
It was Kathleen Kennedy's job to choose who was in charge of the Star Wars Story. Her decision? Just put it in the hands of THREE Different Directors!! (Original plan). Directors who had no relationship with SW in any way.
Kathleen Kennedy is an amazing Producer. However, producer is a very wide category. There's a reason there are always multiple producers. Some producers handle the overall artistic and story decisions, while others handle the logistics, coordination, financing, and budget controls. Kennedy has always been the LATER. She's amazing at logistics, etc. But the artistic side was always Spielberg or Lucas. That was never in her wheelhouse. I'd love to go on but don't have time atm.
Richie 1138 yeah but Lucas was the big producer. Most of them had the same writer too I believe
thebkg YUP! Agreed!
She should have put Dave Filoni or Favreau in charge of writing a general story for the final Skywalker story and make them an Executive Producer. Filoni has been on record saying he didn't want to Direct a Live Action movie, he didn't feel he had the experience to take that on. And that's fine, he didn't have to direct them. He just needed to be in charge of the Story.
I think part of the problem is the vast majority of Kennedy's experience was working with both George Lucas and predominantly Stephen Spielberg. She might not have truly understood that other Directors weren't anywhere near to those standards. I think she expected far better from them and trusted them way more than she ever should have. But her only experience was working with the Best, she didn't comprehend what less than was like.
I still believe she should be fired for failing to produce a better product. The movies still made huge money, but that's only because it's Freaking Star Wars!! Millions of people will go see it even if it gets Horrible Reviews. SW doesn't follow market norms at all. But at the same time the person in charge of the final product should therefore be held to a far higher standard. That Trilogy, as a whole, did not live up to the standards of Star Wars.
She is a very good secretary,...a glorified secretary!
👍✌
Rob is 100% on point.
Kathleen Kennedy needs to leave Lucas Films. An I mean now.
and everything else that she brought us? Mandalorian, Rebels, Resistance , etc. yeah, this hate train on Kathleen Kennedy is nothing but that.. an online hate train. that doesn't translate to real life.
If I had the means I would gladly oversee her being encased in Frozen Carbonite. In fact I’d enjoy that a lot 🧐
She's not the antichrist but she absolutely dgaf about a solid narrative that fits with the themes of the universe.
She cares about her being seen as this transformation executive. She's the one that has held up every interesting idea besides The Mandalorian and st that point they had already brought in Fav's.
She needs to go. The worst things she's done are just straight up lying to us about everything including what this video is about.

Love both of you guys. Thank you BOTH for being awesome 🤘🏼
I'm still baffled how they got the Star Wars rights, one of the biggest franchises of all time, and just didn't plan any of it out 😅
That wasn't "Disney's" fault. Kathleen Kennedy didn't come from Disney, she came from Lucasfilms. She already worked for Lucas and Spielberg. This is Kennedy's fault.
@@thebkg Bog Iger in his book, talked about how they brought on George Lucas as a consultant, and purchased his story ideas, but said that in the actual contract there was no obligation to actually use them. You kind of get the feeling that they were always going to go their own way, and only brought on Lucas for positive PR. Which is highly ironic, because it sounds like they initially only focused on the first film, and specifically wanting to appeal to OT fans, instead of mapping out a 3 part story. So it's not like Disney has no blame in this.
John was so condescending talking about "JJ always intended Rey to be a nobody" now he says he was saying the opposite all along. C'mon

That flip flop life
Should’ve just left her as a nobody
Had they not made her so overpowered maybe they could have, but by making her so abnormally gifted necessitated some really special goddamn reasoning to have her make any sense. Personally working with what we got even though its not my preferred avenue would have had Rey be a reincarnated Anakin whose force ghost would have been nearly destroyed at some point in the past by a Palpatine possessed Luke (who he'd have surreptitiously hitched a ride in ROTJ), explaining her having piloting skills despite being a desert scavenger who'd never flown a ship before, let alone a modded one like the falcon; her skill with a saber despite only being a self-trained novice with a metal staff; and the ability to use advanced force techniques with little to none of the required training by positioning them as weak half remembered instinctual links to a forgotten past life of which fully reconnecting to and remembering would be her primary mission throughout the ST.
Using this you could also explain why Luke would abandon the galaxy and sequester himself on that planet (without destroying his character) as him going into a self imposed exile at a powerful Light side location to find a way to dig the tick that is Palpatine out of his body while quarantining himself so he can't hop onto anyone else and escape. The incident inciteing this would be Palpatine surprising Luke around 10 years after ROTJ by revealing his presence within him by taking control abd showing off his new destructive force ghost destroying technique he'd developed whilst feeding on Luke's power and knowledge over the years, after which he'd go on a rampage using Luke's body to destroy Luke's temple and murder Luke's students (setting up Kylo's motivation), which sees Luke eventually reassert control far too late to stop the carnage.
Hell, you could still have implemented this even as a last minute fix in place of the Rise of Skywalker we got by simply having TROS start right at the end of TLJ and fade away to reveal it all to be a force vision Luke gave to Rey after she'd asked for his help to teste her purity of heart, then you could reveal all the things I detailed, above recontextualizing elements of TFA and TLJ so that they actually make sense with this alternate TROS culminating in a mind battle on the astral plane where Rey, Anakin, Luke and Kylo fight to defeat/help Palpatine (Rey and Anakin vs Palpatine and Luke facing off against Kylo pulling him back from the dark side) ending with either the Anakin side of breaking off from Rey sacrificing himself to finally pull Palpatine to the other side dispelling both of their conciousnesses' for good taking away Rey's chosen one power boost leaving her at average Jedi power levels in need of real training or she goes with Anakin and permadies with him (I prefer the death route as its less of a fairy tale ending but the power of money says Disney would have her live) leaving Finn to with or without Rey become Luke's new student.
tldr?
Martin Sevcech nice reasoning. That would have been something interesting to see. But at the same time there are trillions of people in the Star Wars galaxy, so I don’t see why all powerful force users need to be allocated to Skywalker/Kenobi/Palpatine families. I like the idea that anyone has the potential to become a powerful force user.
@@glasspretender 1. Kenobi was not all-powerful, he was in fact just an average power jedi who trained his ass off to attain an extremely efficient technique that made the most of his relatively meager power level. Consider this, it took him 30+ years of nonstop hardcore training just to match the force push of an Anakin that prioritized martial prowess over force power and probably coasted by on poor technique with overwhelming raw power who'd only been training for 13 years, notice that as Vader in A New Hope after Anakin was forced to get serious due to his physical limitations and Anakin actually applied himself to the spiritual side of the force Obi-wan stood no chance whatsoever.
2. Of the innumerable people in the Star Wars universe (far more than trillions) the vast majority are so weak they couldn't do jack shit with their force potential even with training, so some rando managing to match and far surpass anomalies like Anakin, Yoda and Palpatine with zero training no less is patently ridiculous.
J.J. Abrams has to be the most overrated director alive today. I can't think of a single movie he directed that I really like. M:I III was okay. That's about it.
This ultimately proved that even Abrams, had no idea as to where his mystery boxes were going to go
Someone should bury Abrams in a mystery box! 👍✌
Abrahms never knows what's in his mystery boxes. That can work for story elements (e.g., the rabbit's foot), but it was a poor choice for Star Wars at this point in its development wd.
So typical JJ then
Shows that prequels as much as people hate them at least had a vision
And I prefer them especially episode 3
When did JJ Abrams say that he taken the idea of the nobody in TFA (which according to John he allegedly said several times)? Does anyone know an interview about it?
I never saw it myself
Why would you blame JJ for a decision that the company made?
Feige: I have the next 20 years planed out.
Kennedy: mE maKe uP AS me gO!!!
Solo/Rogue One: We were the most chaotic Star Wars movies to get made
Rise Of Skywalker: Hold my beer
Solo was meh but if anybody find it enjoyable that's them ..rogue one I think almost on par with the six films
John didnt you used to say JJ and Rian and Kathleen had everything planned out...and defended TLJ. Why did JJ then reverse all of that?
He got tired of shilling for Lucasfilm.
Because of the whiny fanboys who didn't like TLJ because it wasn't just full of membaberries.
Rob laying down the law!
TFA: an alright movie with a setup for a bigger adventure
TLJ: probably the shittiest blockbuster movie I’ve ever had the unpleasure to sit through
And the last movie I didn’t even bother watching
How....how can you get one of the all time biggest franchises and not plan the plot? Like, what could be the reason for them just winging it? Anyone want to play devil's advocate? Only reason I assume is that they knew people would just go see the movie anyway so the effort wasn't there.
@@tom6369 and even still TROS plot leaked
Blame JJ and RJ all you want. At the end of the day its KK's fault. She's no Kevin Feige.
Lidya Reacts damn right
So many GOLD quotes from both of them, “40 years of lore and ROS is what they could come up with”
“lucasfilm is run the way we thought DC was being run”
John, man, I love your show and all, but that blind admiration for Kennedy is unwarranted, both as a professional and as a person. If someone gives you a franchise where you’re guaranteed a massive fan base and end up making less profit by each movie, that’s incompetence to the highest degree. Sure, they made a billion per movie, but when your third movie, the climax of your trilogy, makes half what the first movie made, that speaks volumes to the incompetence of the overseer.
I keep saying it going into The Force Awakens there was possibly more or less a plan by by The Last Jedi the director Rian Johnson messed all that up. I believe there was no intention to bring back Palpatine or have Rey have any relation to him. So JJ basically grabbed stuff out of the bag to put something together in the short time of release.
Yep. You could tell when RJ just threw everything out.

It's a shame the way the new trilogy was handled, without any kind of a plan. That said, I did like all three films to varying degrees. At least they'd managed to deliver some thrills over the course of an overall messy journey.

Everyone is saying how bad they feel for Daisy Ridley, which I'm sure they do, but this is the same thing we heard 20 years ago. "I feel so bad for Jake Lloyd/Hayden Christensen/Natalie Portman." Now those same people are talking about how much they LOVE the prequels in yet another revisionist history moment. John, I hope you do not think that the MCU had a plan, because that comparison often gets made here. They did not either. Just watch the director's roundtable. Can't remember if it's on the Infinity War or Endgame extras disc.
Heartbreaking... just heartbreaking smh
Uhmm.. how was it not apparent there was no plan in TLJ? How could RoS have a plot after that?
Oh... And I've been saying JJ Abrams is over rated for YEARS. I watched Alias from Pilot to last Episode, then I watched the first 2 years of Lost. Season 3 lost me. After those I started to say the JJ comes up with great ideas, but he doesn't know how to Finish them. Alias started to descend into a weird almost supernatural plot line in the 2nd season, which ultimately killed the show. The viewership left because it was becoming less and less the international spy show it started as. Lost did something similar. It started as one thing then kept going further and further from its core concept.
So I was furious when JJ was handed Star Trek to reboot. Then he got chosen to do SW. JJ has had the world fooled because people don't pay attention to patterns. Hopefully now they'll be more careful about handing him a project with zero screen play or script and letting him have complete creative control. 😒
Its called kicking ass and take questions later. I cant believe how many people find it hard to take a direction in life without worrying about the consequences.
I find it impressive that Daisy Ridley was still able to give a fantastic performance despite not knowing her character's background
They should have just stuck with the “parents are nobody” plot line. Even people who didn’t like TLJ seemed happier with that than what they did with the whole Palpatine storyline.
I only saw The Force Awakens and it was good... but it wasn’t enough to make me want to see more 🤷🏽♀️
Good don’t see more. That’s the only good one from the sequels. Watching the rest will only make you not like TFA anymore lol
Preach Rob, preach!
I’m a big fan of TFA and TLJ but they really should have planned out the three movies in advance.
TROS was actually what made me not like TFA as much.
R S Thanks lol
Indiana Solo I can get some enjoyment from TROS but there’s no denying it’s a mess of a film.

@@denM-ey3vb Well to be honest they should have just let Rian end it. Could have been better cause atleast is the same director/vision.
den71353 M no because TLJ was the only film in the trilogy that was actually trying to tell a story. You may not like it, but there’s actually a story there unlike TFA or TROS.
Indiana Solo Brooo TLJ is such a mess. Does absolutely nothing with Finn or poe
LAZEDOUT it was messy but at least Finn and Poe both have stories about learning from failure and/or heroism. I’ll certainly take messy over no arc especially if that arc is one that I can still get investment for with each viewing of the film.

Just here for the humble pie hahaha
Which episode did John Campea discuss Boyega’s comments? I can’t find the episode, can someone sed me the link
JJ was a puppet who was enticed with a big pay check. He sold-out on Ep9.
KK flat-out lied in an interview when she stated that Palps was the plan all along.
Why isn’t she just gone already?
The longer she stays the angrier fans get and the longer we wait for more films with new ideas, new hopes.
Trevorrow’s Duel Of The Fates script is my Ep9 head canon.
The Rise Of Skywalker. The RISE of SKYWALKER. WTF does it even mean?
It doesn’t book-end a saga.
It doesn’t mean anything other than Rey’s final line of dialogue. The title really doesn’t reflect the story.
Trevorrow got a raw deal. KK made a bad call in a long list of bad calls. Just GO already for Christ sake :(
It can only be arrogance as the reason for this. Assuming fans would just turn up regardless of the quality.
Rob, that was fucking brilliantly said! So right on!
John calmy points out disney fucked up and then Rob comes in and says it the way it feels.
They should have just went with George's outline that he gave when Disney acquired Lucas Film.
Even George Lucas said that people would’ve hated his movie.
Daisy did not say the words 'No plan'. She spoke about changing their minds on more than one occasion.
After all, if they really had no plan TFA would never have been made, much less, the entire trilogy.
This thumbnail says it all- she's Riddler's daughter!! It makes perfect sense, because of some random easter egg. 😏😉
And a good reason to show why Rey had NO ARC AT ALL in 3 movies. They had no clue where she was headed or where she came from until the last minute.
I could listen to Rob all day on this...he is completely correct. I'm not a trekkie but I know a lot of them were angry with Abrams - now I know how they feel
If I think too much about TROS and trying to make sense of it, my head starts to hurt. It's such a mess.
"PREACH!!!"
The sequels had characters with potential but none of them have consistency or depth, except maybe Kylo Ren and I think that's due to the actor and not the writing, this sequel trilogy is really a mess.
Definitely the writing, the actor was there to serve the character written in the screenplay. The reason Kylo is the most consistent out of all 3 films is that they have least change on him through 3 films. The Last Jedi was very consistent with Kylo because Rian Johnson like the direction of that character, but he hated Finn, so he put him in the pointless casino sequences. Because of that, when it comes to The Rise of Skywalker, JJ don't have to really worry about rewritting Kylo. Honestly Kylo is easily the best character in this trilogy.
There was NO LEADERSHIP on that ship AT ALL!
Love how Rob just game out swinging.
1. George Lucas should have written the story for the whole trilogy.
2. JJ Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan should’ve co-Written all scripts.
3. All directors should’ve been made to stick to the given script unless one of those three men said otherwise.
Breaking News tomorrow: Disney execs confirm Daisy Ridley will no longer be part of any future Star Wars projects.
Damn John B and Daisy really out here breaking Disney!
I don't think Daisy will care.
With the money she made from the trilogy, the chances are excellent that she's set for life and will never have to work a day in her life again.
Oh, and prior to her casting in Star Wars, she came from a First Class background where money was never a problem, anyhow.
Johns take was good star wars theory is the big one out atm really good to.
Fans have known that there was no plan for years. At least now, the access media cannot deny it.
When you say they you mean JJ. Rian smashed it out of the park in regards to his film.

Constancy is key in every industry especially our entertainment outlets
Daisy Ridley was awesome. Poor girl couldn't have been given a better Star Wars movie but dang she worked with what she got.
They did have a plan not story wise but to make her better then everyone.
I'm a starwars fan...everytime that theme opens up and I see that dramatic/ operatic crawl I get goosebumps. I like all the starwars films and spinoffs animated and live action...why because each installment has something GOOD/APPRECIATIVE things In them. But it's clear some were more thought out than others there were bad calls, bad scripts, cartoonish moments etc but... it's all starwars to me.
Disney never had an endgame in mind.
Always have a plan. A bad plan can be improved. Not having a plan kills a project before it starts.
in disney lore, their own cannon, Obi-Wan may or may not have had an affair with a mandalorian queen. if she was Obi-Wans granddaughter she would have been a mandalorian princess, she could have found the dark Saber and become mandalore and raised a mandalorian army against the first order .... the movie writes itself
JJ Abrams is an overrated filmmaker.
Jonathan Freyone i think it was also the disney suits that played a part in it as well.
Good director, bad writer
10 years from now someone will make a documentary looking at what went wrong behind the scenes with this trilogy and it will be as inexplicably crazy as Tiger King. For the life of me I will never understand how you go into filming a TRILOGY without a 3 part story arc mapped out before you start filming.
