    Viewer Question:
LJ Milone - Hey everyone, love the show! So, after seeing the reveals from D23, I am not too excited about anything. I mean I am looking forward to Mandalorian season 3, but I knew that was coming. The Marvel shows and upcoming movies they presented along with the Star Wars presentation just did not grab me. I mean not much on the Fantastic 4 front. Was D23 a let-down, maybe even a missed opportunity to excite fans? Is it just me? Is there anything from D23 you guys are excited about?

John spent weeks telling viewers that the San Diego Comic-Con panel revealed nohing and that D23 would blow it out of the water. He was wrong, and he's pissed about it.

I think we all need to collectively ignore "scoops" and "rumors" from now on. They're the main reasons people get their hopes up, and every time they get things wrong, people still for some reason believe them.

I think Comic-Con was moreso the reason ppl got letdown…the overwhelming expectation was that Marvel was gonna go light on Comic-Con and save the big stuff for D23. A Disney exclusive event. Instead, Marvel went big for Comic-Con, and with so much still to be revealed, the expectation for D23 only grew. Because this is, again, a Disney exclusive again. And yet, Marvel went softer for D23 than they did Comic-Con.

    • @danwhite9184

About damn time somebody says this. It makes me so mad that people will STILL even to this day, believe in those leakers and scoopers on the internet, no matter how good their track records are. And then when that specific announcent doesn't happen at all from them, guess what? All of those people will blame the company for those announcents not being revealed, because of some random person who has alot of followers and/or a verified checkmark gets a lot of attention from mainly the hard-core fans, and starts being mad for no reason. At this point, I would just listen and see for myself on the announcents happening from Disney, that way I won't have to end up getting disappointed mostly. But that's just me.

The Secret Wars announcement was huge.
John downplayed the comic-con stuff to support his narrative "disney is witholding stuff from comic con to announce at D23" but the reveals at comic-con were massive and downplaying that isn't really being honest.

  • @thebenjyman253

Let's be honest here, John DID get his expectations up, like many people, and got let down. They weren't going to announce a ton of new projects because they just did that at Comic Con. Would Fantastic 4 casting have been great? Yes, but that movie is still over 2 years away! I agree that it was pretty disappointing (Harrison Ford's appearance was the only thing that caught my interest) but also this seems like John being mad because he got burnt.

Being outside of that, it is at the same time true that of one expected big news to come out of such an event, there was a lack of surprises, so the live experience wouldn't trump that.
It is fine to enjoy it and fine not to think it delivered based on being in the situation they were in compared to their co-hosts and to other CZcamsrs. And yes, being burnt would color things but all in all both sides of this take on what D23 was are founded in my opinion.

Of course but they never specifically said they would announce the rest of phase six at D23. I understand how your situation of not getting in to the panel has exacerbated your displeasure with the event but you have most definitely set yourself up for disappointment with your previous speculation/hype videos and topics leading up to this event. This is D23, not Marvel/Lucasfilm 23. Those were just one day out of 3 of Disney announcements. We just got spoiled with a ton of new announcements at SDCC. How far into the future do you expect them to make ground-breaking announcements for before they start over promising and underdelivering. I guarantee if you got in the panel, you would have changed your tune by seeing the exclusive footage shown to attendees. At the end of the day, who cares? Ya'll take this so seriously. it's always "don't let your speculation become your expectations" so what happened now? you've been downplaying everything that was announced at SDCC when it was indeed great and setting yourself up for disappointment and hyping up your audience for 2 months and now you're bitter that you didn't get what you wanted when nothing was promised to you in the first place. you even constantly bring up how in 2019 they announced a lot of new stuff when the reality for the MCU panel was that announced Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk and Moon Knight and they only literally showed logos and a basic synopsis with no cast, no leads, nothing. the rest was pretty much the same movies and shows that were presented at SDCC with new cast members and details. that's exactly what happened this year too. it's honestly all on you and this "scooper"/"leaks"/"rumors" culture.
as for the "no roadmap" bit, it's really funny how y'all fell back to this narrative after they literally presented us AN ENTIRE NEW PHASE plus THE CULMINATION OF ANOTHER PHASE just 2 months ago (that cover more than 15 PROJECTS and over 3 years), that culmination being exactly the direction that was expected since they're doing multiverse stories: Kang/Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars. it's okay to rest and just let it sink in that maybe next time you can just wait, be serious and see what happens instead of acting like you were promised something that was never even promised.

I just read an article that talked about Marvel having problems with leakers, and them not really knowing what to do about it. What if Marvel put together a plan to single handedly discredit a bunch of leakers at the same time? Marvel puts a bunch of leaks to known leakers, some with great reputations, about what is going to be announced at D23. Then, they do the exact opposite, damaging the leakers credibility, and calling into question casting info/ storyline info already floating around the internet.

Too many people got hyped up about the "scoops" ahead of time. Also, I fundamentally disagree that "D23 Was A Monumental Let Down" but maybe that is because I'm looking at everything the expo had to offer, not just one panel. The Step in Time (Disney Archives exhibit) was incredible, the World of Dreams (Parks exhibit) was incredible, they unveiled the new title card for the Disney films for the 100th anniversary. Trailers for Hocus Pocus 2 (I'm very excited for this), Disenchanted, and Little Mermaid (breathtaking), more information about the upcoming slate of films and series for Disney and Pixar (I'm very intrigued by Elemental, Elio, and Wish). The trailer for Werewolf By Night looks great, trailer for Secret Invasion looks great, lineup for Thunderbolts looks great, Santa Clauses looks like fun, National Treasure: Edge of History looks good, Percy Jackson looks good, a Pentatonix holiday special for D+ (they had me as soon as they said Pentatonix), Rev Run is bringing The Hip Hop Nutcracker to D+, Muppet Christmas Carol full version coming to D+ in December (announced during the 30th anniversary celebration panel), a performance by Dr Teeth and the Electric Mayhem to promote new series for D+, a new Mickey documentary releasing on his "birthday" on D+. For parks Disneyland unveiled a Mandalorian w/ Grogu meet and greet is coming to Galaxy's Edge in November, Hulk is coming to Avengers Campus in DCA this very soon (they said "next week" during the panel), a new Avengers Multiverse attraction is getting added to Avengers Campus in DCA, heroes from the multiverse will team up to fight King Thanos, a Thanos that won. the Pacific Wharf food court in DCA is getting a facelift to become San Fransokyo from Big Hero 6, a brand new Mickey and Minnie dark ride is opening in Toon Town (Disneyland) in early 2023 (before Tron opens at WDW), Tiana's Bayou Adventure replacement of Splash Mountain sounds intriguing, and Disneyland's New Orleans Square will be getting a gift shop inspired by Eudora (her mom), as well as Tiana's restaurant (likely replacing the French Market restaurant as that one already hosts a jazz band frequently), plus the return of a daytime parade for Disneyland in January, and new fireworks and World of Color shows for Disney100. And they teased that WDW *MIGHT* (they were noncommittal) be getting an expansion for Magic Kingdom that would add areas for Coco, Encanto, and Disney Villains. Really the only big omission for me was that they didn't say anything about the (former) Tarzan's Treehouse at Disneyland which has been closed for over a year and has not had a replacement theme announced yet.

The other Disney stuff was fine, along with Star Wars, although I am disappointed we didn't get an Indiana Jones 5 Trailer or at least a title. The Thunderbolts lineup was okay, but I wasn't really excited about it anyway. Taskmaster being on the team is the only thing that disappointed me, but that is mostly because I hate her in Black Widow, so I hope they either give us a new Taskmaster or improve her in the movie. I was also hoping we would get at least the cast of the Fantastic Four, mostly so we can stop these rumors of who is going to play them. What John ignores in his D23 rant is that he is keyed in to Marvel and Star Wars more than the normal person. While I disagree with him in general that they needed to announce more than they did (Marvel already had 18 announced projects to talk about), what John also forgets is that while some of this info wasn’t new to him, it WAS new to a lot of other people.
Just look at his comments on the Disney/Pixar panel saying it was much better. Why? Because he’s not as keyed in to that area as much as Star Wars and Marvel. That stuff was new to him, just like some of the Marvel and Star Wars stuff is new to others.
He’s not looking at this objectively. He’s essentially an insider, at least compared to the average person. Even us watching this video likely know much more than the average person. To the average person, much of D23 was new information.
Further, the main focus of D23 is for the attendees. The attendees that were there got a lot. They got Indians Jones footage, Wakanda Forever footage, Ahsoka footage, Ant-Man footage, Secret Invasion footage, Mando footage and much more. They got to see casts on stage and listen to them. Harrison Ford being there wouldn’t be a big deal to John. But what about the 10yr old in the front row? Or a lifelong Star Wars and Indy fan? John’s met countless celebrities. Imagine being an average fan and being 20 feet from Harrison Ford.
I’d love to hear from fans who were actually there. I’m willing to bet the majority of them had a great time.

Okay just wanted to get this out
1- This was a D23 panel, there was time slots and they were used very effectively
2- the fact that you were on the outside looking in was a completely different experience to being there, I guarantee if John was in there he would of spoken of how much of a blast it was (context matters) you saw no new footage so you assumed it was nothing new
3- You are in a space, more so than us viewers where you hear constant rumours and leaks, you are in no way the average movie go-er, step out of your bubble
4- SDCC was Marvel going above and beyond absolutely spoiling us so then adding fine tuned details to projects that are closer to release makes sense
    Also with Rob
What it sounds like is that you’re asking for all of the movies synopsis and blueprint to the MCU …at that point why even see the movies to see how they unravel? It’s sort of like giving me a poster for a movie and saying I have no idea where this goes, it’s not the fault of the poster, it’s me not finding out the context, again it all comes down to being contextual, you can’t lay down a puzzle with missing pieces and say I have no idea what this is, no you put it together, at that point just buy the puzzle premade

while d23 was dissapointing, I have ti disagree with you about comic con and no major announcement, they dropped not 1 but 2 avengers movies there! don't think anybody saw that coming, If there's any mistake disney made is that they dropped everything at comic con, they should have saved the avengers announcement for D23. Also they need to spread out their announcement, if the annoucned everything now they'd have nothing else to announce for a few years, the missing phase 6 projects can be announced later, their not imminent. The one major thing for which they had no excuse thoug is the lack of star wars movie announcement, what the hell is disney playing at there, why did we hear nothing about taiki waititi's project, the only thing I can possibly think of is after kathleen kennedy having egg on her face too many with changed directors and cancelled movies she doesn't want to announce anything until she's absolutely sure, which doesn't really excuse it, that's a big problem of hers, she can't get on the same page as her directors. Overall though while I am dissapointed I can see the reaons why we didn't get as much as were were hoping for.

He was then advised to report to the regular media line at a specified time and went early only to find out that where he was told to go was the wrong line and when he got to the line he actually needed to be in, all of the passes for media & press were soldout. I think he has a valid gripe with the way Disney handled the situation with the press passes in not giving him enough time to make a decision to go or not go to the Con. Everything else he is griping about is a byproduct of salty manbaby tears.

It’s interesting how Rob as a comic book reader is confused about the lack of narrative momentum as he calls it, when the comics are very similar in that regard. There’ll be stories going on in the comics that have absolutely zero correlation sometimes, other times they’ll be directly impacted. The Thunderbolts don’t have to directly impact the F4 and Secret Wars. Blade doesn’t have to impact the multiverse saga, it’ll be in its own supernatural corner of the universe for when we get to Midnight Sons. Not EVERYTHING needs to be connected given the amount of characters and teams that exist in Marvel comics and eventually will exist in the MCU. MoM did it’s job; destroyed the Darkhold across the multiverse which could definitely have future impact, along with introducing the concept of incursions (which MCU 616 Strange caused one). Loki S1 did it’s job of narratively pushing forward how the multiverse is becoming a factor. The individual projects themselves in P4 have been up and down imo, but it’s not for a “lack of direction” or momentum at all imo. For me personally even without knowing the future projects announced, it’s been fairly obvious where it’ll all eventually lead to given the multiverse was involved

I think instead of saying ‘Disney’s D23 was a failure’. You really mean ‘The Lucas film and Marvel studios panel was a failure’. I know you addressed this, but you still drew all the attention to Star-wars and Marvel. I was dissatisfied by the panel as well, I think they had good ground work, but they needed a bomb. A big casting announcement or project reveal. However the Pixar, Disney animated and Disney live action section were quite exciting. Hocus Pocus 2, Disenchanted and LITTLE MERMAID!! Every person I chat to, talks about the little mermaid teaser. I think your perspective, as someone who is really focused on Star-wars and Marvel, is that this was a let down. But I think the difference between Comic-Con and D23 is that Comic-Com is for marvel only and that D23 is for all Disney. That’s why you lumping Disney as just Marvel and Star-wars is unfair to the other projects and movies that aren’t part of the major two franchises.

I look at it this way. When Marvel made a return to Hall H this year they brought out the big guns. They literally gave us the rest of phase 4, all of phase 5 & parts of phase 6. I think going into D23 we we’re waiting for that “Thanos Moment” & it just never came. It didn’t leave us with that “Oh My God” feeling. I think above everything the two properties that everyone wants is Fantastic Four & X-Men. That needed to be the “Thanos Moment” of the weekend. John is right the energy level for Marvel is low. It’s ok, but it’s low. More than anything though I think we all feel this way cause for the first ever we’re trying to see how all the phases connect in the multiverse saga. Personally I feel like marvel hasn’t done a good job at leaving the bread crumbs like they did with the infinity saga, but that’s a rant for another day.
