- It's that time of year again when I have a go at getting a minimum 20 seconds in the air, the Bird Dog was voted for by the majority so I have another go. This is the build video, the trimming flights will follow soon, • Experience the Thrill ... , cheers and don't forget to check out Model Shop Leeds www.modelshopleeds.co.uk/cata... Well done. I've built this plane and it flies well.
It certainly does Mr S., thanks for watching, cheers
I've found that an old piece of hack saw blade cuts great stringer notches. Glue two blades together and you can cut 1/8 inch notches.
Great tip Greg, thanks 👍
Hi Cliff. Very usefull😀👍🤔
Hi Wouter, glad you found it so, cheers 👍
Another way to save weight is not to use the wire landing gear. Or just use on the leading edge of the landing gear faring. At the tail you can just make the landing gear out of wood. laminate two layers of the 1/20 th inch for strength in the shape of a tail wheel. From there you can even sand it down thinner.
Two great ideas Morco, thanks for sharing 👍
thanks!!!!
You're welcome!
Amazing work. My Dad taught me how to build planes,1955. Still learning from you. Thank you Cliff
Thanks Ron, what a great hobby we have 🙂👍
Awesome!!! Was thinking about buying that kit!!
You should Jason, if you're in the uk click the link to Model Shop Leeds for a quick delivery 👍
The camouflage definitely improved things Cliff. Interested to see how you get on with the wing like that. Good luck
Thanks Mike, it will be interesting I do like to experiment a little 🤔👍
Ill try the glue stick that seems way easier than painting adhesive like i have been
If you can get a blue one (it dries clear) you can see where, and how much, you've put on 👍
You did a great job on it
Thanks Paul, quick and dirty really but it should look good in the air 👍
Can't wait to see it fly
wonderful!
Thank you Collin! Cheers!
Clifford, did you ever try, turning the die cut sheet face down and lightly sand the back until the die cut shows through.
Hi Michael, yes I have, it's a good tip to be reminded of 👍
Great building tips and great craftmanship as usual! Looking really great. I hope you win!
I don't mind if I win or not, just to see her floating about will be reward enough 👍
Great build Cliff, love the cowling tip. Look forward to the maiden. 👍🏻
I had to slip the build between DH2 bits but I'm back on it now 🙂👍
Awesome Cliff. Looks great! Will be interesting to see if your secret weapon works!
Thanks Adam, it works well on the Yoyo but then I haven't tried the Yoyo fully covered!
Very nice little build Cliff, let's hope you smash the 20 seconds 😀👍
Fingers crossed Ian, but it's the taking part that counts 🙂👍
Fun build, ive always loved the bird dog.. somewhere in my collection of kits I have a 72" to build.. cheers Cliff..
Hi Jerty, that would be an awsum model to build given the history you have with the aeroplane, but I guess that's why you bought the kit in the first place 🤔👍
looks good. I built that kit some 20+ years ago lol. the only Guillow's kit I build these days is every 5 years or so ill build the little fw190 kit. it was the very first one I built that wasn't a plastic static display. other than that I'm building 1/4 scale from scratch warbirds and such.
It's good to take a break from the bigger builds every so often, the 190 kit makes a nice model 👍
@@CliffHarveyRCPlanes it does, I have a collection of the 190s in my shop. You can see the progression of my skills throughout the year's. Too bad I destroyed the very first one as a kid lol.
I'm celebrating another lap in Sept. myself Cliff, making it 70, The only thing changing is shrinking storage space,& here across the pond, are available places to fly. Love the builds mate, keep it up !!
Thanks Don, we'll all be flying indoors soon! 🤔👍
Hi Cliff, love the videos. This summer I've built the guillow cub and hurricane - with your videos for tips. Can you tell me what plastic you use in between the balsa and the plans? keep up the good work.
Yes, absolutely Andy, it's just clear polythene from any source although sometimes ca will stick to certain types which isn't what you want of course. The old-fashioned way is to wax the plan, cheers.
I have to say these little models help to keep you young at heart even if you're an oldie, lol, cheers.
"Light" youve added a lot of doublers and extra wood for a light build? Usuallly when we plan for a lighter weight than stock we take away not add? I typically use ultra thin styrene sheet for the paper parts on "Gwillows" builds it gives a great finish for less weight than paper. The Cessna single taildraggers do not have "oleo struts" but spring main gear - the Guillows kits have a balsa leaf that is shaped to look like the spring legs but it is not a fairing nor covering an oleo. Airbush your tissue or print your designs ion the tissue before hand to save weight. Just have fun and enjoy the build but if you're building for a competition it should be your best effort. The undercamber on a built up wing will produce more drag than lift and would require added weight for penetration for good duration glides but a worthwhile experiment.
Hi FM, thanks for you comment, I don't think I added any doublers or extra wood, if anything I took away a fair amount. Styrene's a good tip but we can only use what's in the box. Oleo's ... fair point. I don't own an airbrush or an inkjet printer so the next best thing is watery paint. The aim of the competition is to get a minimum of 20s in the air, which I did easily, and, as you say to have fun along the way. If you go to the Guillow's Flying Models Facebook page, and join, you can join in the fun later this year. The undercamber was a fun experiment, for comparison I covered it in and it didn't really make any difference, overall though it was my best effort!
As a suggestion for a future project, try spraying green ink lightly but uniformly over the skin, its very light indeed. Or just use green tissue. 😁
Thanks Nick can't do that on this model on both counts ... one my daughter has my sprayer and two, competition rules state I had to use the tissue that came with the kit 🤔👍
Cliff fantastic build and great scheme, hope you get a perfect day for the trimming and record flight. Jeff in LA USA
I hope so too Jeff, if I'm patient I'm sure it'll happen, I've got a few weeks in hand before the closing date 👍🙂
HI Cliff, I really like your videos. Can you give me any advice on how to make nose blocks or links to other site that give instructions on them? I am new to model building and would like to get better at making nose blocks. Thanks
Hi Mike, when you say 'nose blocks' I guess you mean using the plastic cowl that comes with the model and 'fitting it out' with balsa. There's probably loads of ways to do this but this FW190 video shows a method that works quite well, czcams.com/video/d08SIMwEK8E/video.html, also you could join the Guillow's Facebook page 'Guillow's Flying Models', cheers.
Kudos to your wife for pulling off the camo! HA HA. Looks good Cliff. Lots of good information presented.
Thanks, she's pretty good at digging me out of holes John 😁👍
HA HA I can relate. 😂😂😂
Looks great Cliff! 👍
Thanks Jude 👍
The only thing different I would do is use coloured tissue paper instead of paint, but obviously the contest rules don't permit you to do this. Everything else you've done seems pretty prudent to me, particularly increasing the inside curvature of the underside of the wings.
Hi LRG, thanks, I think at the end of the day the extra drag over shadowed the extra lift so there wasn't any particular gain but here's the flight video that I qualified for the competition 👍 czcams.com/video/FJx2xDJcfe4/video.htmlsi=di1qDSxOWmkSJAak
Oh, you need small fingers!😄
Or tweezers Sabrina 👍
Thanks for the mention Cliff, But it was not I who gave you that tip.
I know it was not your good self because it was me. Ha ha, Cliff`s memory is pretty bad. 🤣
Oh well, looks like it was Nick then, cheers 😁👍
Thanks... who are you again? 🤔😁
Ave you built something from the Vintagemodelcompany K:K models
Hi Thomas, the only VMC model I've currently built is the Sopwith Triplane czcams.com/video/ivfVY5Rg5vc/video.html, I've also built the KK Ajax and converted it to radio control, although not from a VMC kit, here's the playlist czcams.com/play/PLjgcy0uult_dPyKOJ7YzZbF22egyRPj0I.html, cheers
Man , I started a bird dog about 4 months ago . dove right in . Started gluing up the body , until i realized that its not a laser cut kit , and the stringer cutouts were not done . Needle file is too grabby and cracked 2 formers . I might have to make one of your thin sanding sticks .
Hi Diceman, the little sanding sticks make the job very quick, if you want you can glue a 1/16 depth gauge on the side as well 👍
Hi Cliff. Do you have a link to the contest and can post the dates?
You need to go to the Guillow's Flying Models Facebook Page and join up (6.7k members), then all will be explained 🤔👍
Hmmm, not interested in rubber band models any more. One thing I did think of when I was lad was to upload the parts into a CAD and up scale it in scale. It's a 1/24 scale so I would increase it to say 1/8 scale. Assuming I have to time to do it.
I've scaled up these small models before Lee, they fly just like the small ones really 🤔👍
Got any good advice? I have terrible precision and i bought this.
I feel like the parts you have to make the notches in should've had removable pieces like the side panels.
The pieces you have to notch are called formers and they're already shaped to allow the rubber motor to be dropped down the fuselage. I'm not sure I understand your question 🤔
Not bad I would of used a a wide tip marker but I don't know I've only put together only a few Guillows models
your work is most satisfying.
Thanks Rafael, I'd probably end up sticking a marker through the covering 😁🤔
