    The guide rods are supposed to be level with the stone. Put on flat surface and then tighten.

      @@pjw1980 based on my 30+ years of experience, definitely. I'd say it's probably better on kitchen knives than any other kind. Just strop the blades after sharpening, because Lansky can create a bit of a burr when you're just beginning with it. And be careful, because it creates a demonic edge.

    Glad to find this video before purchasing my first Knife sharpening system. It will sharpen my Chief Knives at a very reasonable cost. It's mobile too for outdoor Barbeque cookouts., i.e. Brisket, Porkbutt, etc. Wicked Edge Pro 2 was stupidly expensive. So that is out for me.

    This should be a great help for me. I've always had my brother sharpen up my hunting knives just before the season begins. I mean the dude could turn a cheese slice into a razor. But, that's no longer an option. So while I was rummaging around the camp trailer i found this kit. And this video looks like I'll be able to make a good enough job doing it on my own. Pushing the rod all the way in, as opposed to making sure it's flat with the bottom of the stone, *does* throw off the angle by a small amountt. But the truth is, it doesn't much matter for most knives. The difference between, say, a 19deg edge and a 20deg edge just doesn't matter. In fact, even if you do position the rod correctly, you'll still rarely hit the exact angle, because this system doesn't take the blade width into account. A narrow blade, where the edge is close to the clamp, will get a larger angle from any given position. A wide blade, where the edge is further from the clamp, will get a smaller angle. But for most people, those slight inaccuracies just don't matter.

    • @AlphaWolfKNW
      @AlphaWolfKNW  Před rokem +5

      Your right, the stones should be leveled with the rods. I wasn't clear on that because I never had an issue with it. But I started doing it that way after, and while there really isn't much difference it's more precise and it should be done the correct way. Thanks for letting people know the correct way 👍

Other videos I watched shows placing the stone on a flat surface and keeping the angle of the rod even with the back of the stone. Does it matter? I wasn't sure if it affected the angle of the stone against the blade or not....thanks!

      In case you never got an answer, it matters very much. It will completely throw the geometry off if you don’t do it that way AND there will be inconsistency through every stone with a variation or a couple degrees at most. Which is a big deal you really care about an accurate and precise edge

    • @Befuddledzebra_6

      Also, you’re only supposed to go one direction into the blade from heel to tip. Per lansky themselves. It also ensures a uniform grain/grind pattern for longevity and once again consistency.
      If your rubbing back and forth what inevitably happens is you will have spots that have seen more stone passes and more material than other areas of the knife

  • @Befuddledzebra_6

    You absolutely have to set the guide rod and stone level with each other on a flat surface. I know there are detents on the rod but from my experience they are not consistent.

    The depth of the spine of the knife in the lansky holder IS critical. Place it too deep and without commonality, it WILL change the angle -- hence, why Lansky sharpeners come with an inscribed molded line molded into the aluminum holder about 1/8th of an inch from the tips of the holder 'fingers'. That line tells you how far into the holder, the spine of the knife would go. Sliding the spine so deeps -- as shown here -- is the WRONG technique.

    • @odiamonds1961
      @odiamonds1961 Před rokem +1

      You have to understand that the particular knife he chose for this tutorial has a beveveled spine. The jaws won’t clamp down unless he inserts it into the flat of the blade.
