  • This is hands down my favorite method of sharpening knives. I get very consistent SCARY SHARP edges EVERY TIME using this system. I love this system because it is 1. Affordable 2. Fool-proof (read: EASY) 3. SAFE 4. Versatile.

    And of course, you NEED a leather strop, this is the one I use:

    I just found this video today. I purchased the Deluxe Lansky System with more stones and the ceramic hone. I love it but needed to really learn the best way to use it. This is by far the best tutorial out there. Even Lansky's own video is lacking. THANK YOU!!!

  • @Tool-Meister
    @Tool-Meister Před 2 lety +63

    Dan, This still one of the best Lansky tutorials on CZcams. I just re-watched this video and wanted to add a couple of tid-bits. Even Lansky recommends NOT using oil on their diamond stones. Actually traps the filings between the diamond grains. The best process for cleaning diamond stones is water and a tooth brush. I've cut the bristles on a NEW toothbrush to about 1/2 length. That really stiffens them up. I then cut the brush to fit in the Lansky box. It's a a great diamond stone cleaner. You CAN use water as a cutting fluid if you like. A little messy but helps keep the stones clean while cutting. Lastly, when stropping, DO NOT roll the edge under. Instead, at the end of the stroke, flip it OVER, pointing back to the way it came. Watch a good barber strop his razors. This is how it's done. Rolling under can actually ruin the nice profile you just worked so hard to achieve.

    • @bigred9135
      @bigred9135 Před 7 měsíci +2

      He means at the end of the stropping stroke roll the blade onto it's spine then back onto it's edge, as opposed to rolling it over via it's edge..... This preventing the edge to roll over....

    Ive been practicing sharpening my own knives for about 3 years now, and you have now taken my knife game to a whole new level. Your Method using the Lansky Sharpening System is better and more effective than what the instructions say, Now my stubborn knives that are harder to sharpen are razor sharp all the way down the blade evenly. Literally shaved off even stubble on my arm. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

    I have been using the 5 stone system for about 22 years. I have only replaced a couple of the stones and they are affordable. I didn't learn about burs until I started refurbing straight razors a few years back (no this system will not work for that LOL), the explanation in the prior video was way easier to understand than the way it was taught to me then.

  • @481brighton
    @481brighton Před 2 lety +10

    Thanks Dan. The best explanation of the burr I've ever heard. A lot of people, supposedly in the know, would make you believe that the back & forth motion with the burr will take it off. It doesn't. It does get progressively smaller with each finer hone and towards the end your just aligning the burr. Thanks very much for setting this straight in a video. By the way, I've been using the Lansky system for 40 years. Love it!!

    MAN! I'm so glad you explained to push into the metal, and not pull down away from it. So many videos and no one explains this concept and it's a vital one I suspect:) To a newbie, it looks like it would make more sense to drag the rods down over the blade, but that would be wrong. Push the rods up and across the blade. Excellent!

    • @samcostanza

      You can push, pull, or both. Doesn't matter. I push & pull with coarser grits, then on my final grit, I push it until the last few strokes, then I pull it for the last few strokes. But I've pulled it exclusively and it works exactly the same. You just have to be more careful, because the stone can come off the blade and the guide rod can hit the edge.

    Saw this and had to show the love. I've been using this system for decades. No need for anything else, unless you're sharpening a sword, and I've sharpened a 14" BEAST with the same set. Everything from razor blades, to KA-Bars, bayonets, spear blades...... My only two caveats are that, when I can, I put the knife in a soft jawed vice, AND to keep in mind that, unless you're shaving with it, it doesn't need to be shaving sharp. The first time you cut a piece of rope, guess what? Yup, dull knife. Great video.

  • @RichardRubicamPhotographer

    Dan, thank you for posting your informative video. My brother gave me a Rigid knife with Damascus blade that was sharp looking (forgive the pun) but really was not functionally sharp. I remembered that I somehow acquired a Lansky set with 5 different stones but no instructions, and I didn't know how to use it. I found a diagram and printed instructions on Lansky's web site but they lacked what I needed. I was glad to find your video that SHOWED me how to obtain a very sharp edge on the knife mentioned. My holding hand got fatigued so I clamped the setup in my drill press vice. With assistance from a bright LED light and magnifying glass I could tell when the felt pen marks were completely gone.

    Love your channel; guns and guitars are my two biggest hobbies.
    Gotta say, your Sharpie idea is genius. I’ve never been able to figure out what the bevel angle is, on my knives, or frankly been able to sharpen them to a razor edge.
    I’ve carried pocket knives, daily, since grade school (45 years ago). In the 1990s, I started collecting and now own hundreds of dollars worth of very nice brand name knives; Benchmade, Spyderco, Cold Steel, Case, etc. I carry many of them until they are dull and then they go in my big wooden tool box, never to be used again. Can’t tell you how many $100+/- knives I own, that will now not even cut open a plastic packaging container.
    Thur the years, I’ve tried several different sharpening methods from basic stones and rods to the pull thru quick sharpeners, to diamond sharpening systems and even a portable low RPM grinder. Nothing, I mean NOTHING has ever worked for me. It’s frustrating, I’m a civil engineer with a high mechanical aptitude, but I have never been able to learn how to sharpen a damn knife.
    After watching your videos, I’m definitely going to hop over to Amazon and buy a Lansky kit, leather strap and some black Sharpies. I’m excited to try it out and (finger crossed) get a razor edge on some of my old favorites.

I usually sharpen my manix 2 at 20 degrees and it comes out absolutely screaming sharp and after it's done it looks beautiful and is dangerously sharp just how I like it. I've been pretty deep into knives for about 10 years I remember being so frustrated trying to get an edge when I started out on a lansky I wish this video was around back then. One thing to note however, you have the old version of the lansky system when the clamps were made in the US out of thick aluminum. Nowadays they're made out of much thinner aluminum that tends to bend and alter angles in the process. That may be something to let people know just in case they've got the newer version.

    I have one of the things old LS Lansky systems, love that thing. Had a couple issues with the rods not being straight, thereby changing the angle a bit. I now mostly use the Spyderco system and like it for overall quickness and simplicity.

      The spyderco system is great, I think the lansky is a little more versatile and foolproof. But once you have a good edge, it’s prettty easy to maintain it with the sharp maker!

      @@GunsandGuitars agreed. I actually used the Lansky exclusively until a butcher introduced me to the sharp maker, much less setup time for basic blade maintenance.

Plus there is a wide arrangement of options to design, shape, and substitute. You have that content that I often watch videos over in awe at your creations

    I have fallen in love with the new plug-in, belt sharpeners! Best $75 I’ve ever spent! I keep it plugged in on a bedside table and every night when I empty my pockets of EDC, I will just run the “knife if the day” through it real quick before I put it away. Especially after a day that my knife may have seen a lot of use. I liken it to how my Grandfather did with his old strop.(which I have now) He kept a strop on his dresser and did the same thing every night. I picked up the same habit, only technology has given me a better option. He taught me how to properly sharpen and always said that a dull knife is more dangerous than a sharp one! Which is SO true!

    Only just found this video but I bought one of these diamond kits about a year ago and they're awesome, you can buy the additional stands for them also to save holding it. Only downfall to the set it the guide rod can have a bit of play so you just need to hold it up so the angle stays consistent. 👌

    @lain4231 Před 3 lety +4

    You should address the common issues with the lansky system. The metal rods are not straight and have to be bent into place and leveled properly with the stones. The clips they have to secure the rods put slit bends through out the rods and cause uneven angles. Another issue is the angle guide holes allow for wiggle room (up/down) causing uneven angles again. Great system, but has some flaws that will be frustrating for newcomers.
