Why Apple's Mouse Charges From The Bottom

- Apple’s known for making some interesting design decisions, and nowhere is that more clear than with their Magic Mouse. Which is powered from the bottom, making it impossible to use while charging. And I’ll explain why Apple made such a strange decision in this video.

Ignore this questionable design choice with the charger, this is still like the most unergonomic and fiddly mouse I‘ve had to work with
I love most Apple products. But I borrowed someone’s magic mouse for 5 minutes and knew I would never get one. It’s ridiculously uncomfortable to use

Exactly
Greg, I respectfully disagree with your statement. Having the ability to quickly charge up doesn't justify Apple putting the port at the bottom. Being a Magic Mouse user myself, I have found that over time the battery gets weaker faster and thus requires more frequent top-ups. Having the charging port at such an awkward position really yields no advantages to the end user. The fact that it charges via Lightning only makes things worse, as I have far more USB-C cables lying around than Lightning ones. I appreciate that you give credit to Apple when due, but you should really call them out when they make questionable product decisions (such as these) that really brings no benefit to consumers apart from the so-called 'aesthetic' reasons.
I think it's still about practicality on Apple's side that they don't need to update tooling for an accessory. No updates on design, less money spent, more profit.
I think it provides the benefit of a port that is less likely to get stuff in it because its placed vertically vs horizontally. Thats in addition to the aesthetic point. Either way its a none issue because it can charge quickly and and last a while
@@chidorirasenganz charge last but batteries sometimes don’t. So that’s what I believe they’re saying.

I'm still using the AA version of the mouse and I keep several rechargeable AA batteries so I can swap them out; the best of both worlds.
The other objection I have isn't mentioned in the video. It is the fact when the actual battery does die fully you can't just keep using it as a wired mouse. It becomes useless.
Yeah, Apple just doesn't want 'peasants' who can't just buy a new apple mouse out of their pocket money using their products. Hurts their premium brand image.
Maybe that's one of the REAL reasons why Apple put the charging port on the bottom - to compel people to buy another one if the battery ever stopped holding a charge. More money for Apple that way. Sneaky.
Doesn't that completely defeats the purpose of buying a wireless mouse in the first place? I have a wireless gaming mouse because I didn't want to keep it plugged in during use. If I have to keep a wireless mouse plugged in all the time, I would have just bought a wired mouse in the first place.
@@tomackerman4089 Half in one hand half the other. Yes it's not why you bought the mouse but when the battery get's to eol which for most wireless mice i've used is around 2.5-3 years You need to either be topping it up constantly to use the thing or just have it plugged in as behavior starts to get wild or unresponsive. Really it's a stop gap solution till you can either afford a new mouse or fix it yourself.
“You can’t just use it as a wireless mouse” then just get a wired mouse? I don’t understand the objection
"Those complaints are probably coming from people who don't even use the products in the first place."
No the complaints are coming from people who had an empty mouse during work hours and had so wait some time to be able to use the mouse. This video is just marketing BS.
So you might have to take a 2 minute break like twice a year if you forget to charge your mouse for months at a time and ignore the low battery warnings? OH THE HUMANITY!
@@BixbyConsequence its still a fucking premium product and the idea of not being able to use it while its charging is ridiculous lmao its not about that you can leave it in for 2 minutes its about the fact that its poorly designed at the cost of end users especially from such a huge company as apple, they have the money and the design team to put it somewhere else
@@BixbyConsequence apple employee spotted
@@BixbyConsequence Ahh yes, '2 minute break twice a year' when a 2 minute charge only lasts 9 hours at best. It takes 2 hours to charge to full and a full charge only lasts 6 months of moderate usage but yes, lets ignore a stupid design decision just because it doesn't happen frequently. After the initial redesign it would cost them literally nothing to put the charging port on the side like every other wireless mouse on the market.
Not like the mouse laying on its side puts additional strain on the charging cable and causes it to break faster or anything, you know, the $20 custom charging cable that apple only sells unlike every other wireless device using a standard usb cable so if it breaks you just use one of those like your wireless headphone cable, your phone charging cable, wireless speaker cable, alarm clock cable. Nope, if the cable breaks you're stuck until you go to the store and spend $20 on a single wire, totally not a cash grab. Let's put the charging port on the back of the phone too so you have to awkwardly hold it if you decide to use it when charging, wouldn't want people using a wired phone... God forbid anyone have the option to turn it into a wired device if they don't want to deal with the hassle of charging it anymore, totally didn't make it like that so you're forced to buy a new mouse if you actually want a wired one cause apple totally doesn't milk their customers.
Next you'll be buying bluetooth headphones/earbuds where the charging cable would stick in your ear when you try to use it, god forbid anyone have the choice to turn their device back into a wired one like every other wireless mouse on the market. You gonna buy a car where the gas door is on the bottom which forces you to flip the car over or slide under it too? Not like you have to fill gas all that often right... You crapple fanboys are so quick to defend obvious design flaws, the mouse wasn't even designed to stand on the side or upside down so you just have an awkward teeter totter, you gonna get some water glasses where the bottom is curved too so your cup just spills whenever you let it go? You only have to hold the glass for a couple minutes while you drink it right...

@@Kazuny because a whole bunch of people complain doesn’t mean that it’s a flawed product or let alone an issue no matter what product you make if it is sold by the millions they are going to be people that complain simple as that. Look, I'm not an Apple user and this channel gets me interested in their products a lot and I think this video has done a great job at its purpose, explaining. However, the product itself is still questionable at best. Even if the need to charge it rarely comes up, it doesn't change the fact that it's still objectively awkward to charge.
“These complaints are coming from people who don’t even use the product in the first place.” Your point about it being awkward to charge? It’s two minutes, not a big deal? lol

But you don’t charge it that much. That’s why is not a big deal! I have the Magic Mouse, for like 6 months now. I’m a designer and I use it daily. I’m not lying when I tell you that I have charged it exactly 5 times. No more than that. It could,ve been just 4 but I like to charge it when I notice that is running low. Believe me that using the mouse the last thing to worry about is the charging
i don’t normally comment, but the ending bothered me, as someone who uses every apple product under the rainbow daily for work, i have NEVER once gotten either my home office or office office magic mouse to charge to a usable amount in under 30 minutes. Not once, it’s very noticeable because of that… BUT in defense it normally lasts a very long time on a full charge! but let me add my apple pencils are the same way, 15 seconds my butt! it has to be connect MINIMUM 15 minutes, or you’re going to lose connection FAST. but again, the battery life is great when it’s fully charged. (also let me add, those charging times aren’t that bad imo, just nowhere near as good as this video portrays them)
The point is it might not last as long under very extreme conditions but in general if you plug the mouse in for example every month let’s just say you should never ever have an issue with not being able to get through a full work session even if it’s like let’s say at 12 hours straight work session same with the Apple Pencil you should be able to forget to put it back on your iPad for a week and still have juice left if you need to use it which with Apple products that is very true it is very rare that I actually have any of those devices dead and if so it’s because I haven’t touch the pencil in three months it hasn’t been attached and I used it or something otherwise I’ve never had an issue I want to twice the mouse was dead and I just flip it over plugged it in went to grab something to drink or eat came back in 10 minutes and was able to get through my three or 4 hour session no problem before I was done with it for the day and let it charge overnight literally is never an issue people will just complain to complain every product has a downfall regular batteries you have to make sure you always have them in stock and then take them out swap them out etc. sure might give you a Instagram vacation but you’re still gonna have to change them and make sure you’re always stocked up on hand wired again never have to charge it but aesthetically not as pleasing to the eye for most etc.
There was a wireless charging solution for 1st generation of Magic Mouse and it was quite reliable.
I was using Artwizz wireless charging adapter for years, before I got Magic Mouse 2 with my iMac.
The adapter was made of two elements: a charging base and rechargeable battery pack which looked like an original battery cover of Magic Mouse. It worked like MagSafe today, aligning the mouse on the charger using magnets, but the charging speed wasn’t very fast. There were few other brands making their own solutions based on this idea (one of them was from Mobee brand), before disappearing from the market after Apple has discontinued 1st generation of Magic Mouse. I think Apple has missed the opportunity to bring wireless charging to Magic Mouse with introduction of 24” iMac, because from the technological point of view it’s not impossible to add MagSafe technology to their mouse.
Greg, thanks for your channel and your great explanations. I really appreciate it and find it stunning what you find out sometimes. But as a UX Designer myself I think in this case you might be not quite right. I think the aspect that is it is a much greater experience to use it without a cable is a very strong point here. And I could imagine really good that Apple wanted to force people to have this cable-less experience. Because it is very different from the experience you have with the keyboard or the trackpad. Because you simply don’t move these two normally and so the cable can’t bother you really. But well, just my Opinion on this topic, anyway keep up the very good and inspiring work! Already looking forward to the next video✌️🙂

Some of them make sense.
Some of them, to be honest look like an attempt to make Apple look good about items competitors are making better.
I think it is a good and healthy attitude to introduce some criticism regarding apple’s actions/decisions/solutions
"Those complaints are probably coming from people who don't even use the product in the first place."
I think this line says a lot. You can't just assume that most of the negative comments are coming from people who don't use the product. In my case, I hate the fact that I can't charge the mouse while using it - especially since it doesn't warn me that the battery is low until I have no choice but to stop what I'm doing and charge it.
It's okay to admit that sometimes Apple makes bad design choices.
And just because we don't use it does not mean our opinions on it are valueless. From an ergonomics viewpoint, we generally know what works and what doesn't, and well... Magic Mouse ain't it... and from a usability perspective, just where it the charging port is tells me everything I need to know about what Apple was thinking about when designing it... Prioritizing form over function gets you pure garbage nine times out ten.
I didn't even realize it was a rechargeable mouse until a message popped up on my screen to recharge my mouse! It was a relief to discover the lightning connector fit. Surprise!
until you run out of battery at a critical moment in time and you need access to your computer quickly. The 2 min charge applies only when the battery just lost charge moments ago. I went on vacation for 1 month, the mouse discharged and it took a full hour to get it back in. That full hour, i couldnt use my computer, and i really needed it. It is a reliability issue, the moment you need it the most it dies and you have to wait. They should put the port on the side so you can use it while charging
While the reasoning for them not redesigning the Magic Mouse is more BS than anything, the fact that it takes THAT less amount of time to charge for it IS admittedly pretty impressive. But they really do need to redesign that like they did with the iMac. Keep the lightning port if they want just make it better placed.
They could do (magnetic) swappable batteries so you could take it out to charge it, and clip the other one in. That would be kinda magic not gonna lie.
Please for the love of God don't keep the lightning port. Their charging ecosystem is already bad enough
You would think they would put that as a major selling feature on the box. If they did that, it would've elminated A LOT of the confusion everyone has for the port.
I have the older Magic Mouse with the removable batteries, but I rarely even use it because the MacBook trackpad is so nice.
I have the black Magic Mouse and it’s by far my favorite mouse, it looks so cool, it connects directly through the Bluetooth menu, I will admit I found it uncomfortable at first but now I’m used to it and other mice seem strange. And I think I’ve had to charge it like 3 times and I’ve had it for like 6 months…
And that's why Apple put the charge port on the bottom
Apple did actually gave you the option to include a wired mouse with your iMac up until early 2009.
This is an old comment but I bought an iMac in 2015 and was given the choice of a wired mouse, which I went for because I didn't want to need to charge my mouse in the middle of work
This is the most ridicilus explanation i ever heard. They had to „redesign“ the mouse by removing the door and adding the port. The position of the port has nothing to do with the internal placement of the battery. Youre not directly plugging into the battery. It has to do with the design, but not as you explained it. I think it has to do with the touch surface, when the port is on the front they have to make a cutout in it for the port and they didnt want that. But anyway i avoided the stupid and expensive magicmouse and keyboard and went for a logitech mx mac keyboard and a mx master 3 mouse. They are cheaper and just better devices….
Well, the fact that the charging position doesn't matter cause it lasted for like months

The Magic Mouse consistently provided the worst Mac experience of all, while the Magic Trackpad was the best (mostly because it can side scroll and allow for gestures just like the Magic Mouse, without any of the pitfalls it provides)
The glossy part that you touch curves all the way over the edge and there is physically no space to place a port there, and they likely didn’t want to spend the r&d on fully redesigning the mouse. I know, a strange decision and I also don’t love using this mouse in the first place as I much prefer a trackpad or an actual mouse, not this weird hybrid, but the charging port thing is really such an odd bone to pick when it really doesn’t matter at all given how quickly it charges and there are a million more important criticisms of this mouse than that non issue.
Yeeea if only battery longevity relied solely on amount of hours it spent working and didn't include the actual charging cycles, which is one of the reasons why usually it is better to charge the thing fully at once rather than in short bursts...
So I think the situation about people complains is pretty justified. Who in the right mind would want to buy a product that gives more questions about itself than answers.
Just pay the extra for a Magic Trackpad. It is a significantly better experience. OR just get the Logitech MX Master 3S for Mac for $20 more at $99. (MX Master 3S is $99, Magic Trackpad is $129)
But hopefully when Apple releases their USB-C version of the Magic Mouse they fix this issue. Crossing my fingers...
I do use this product & still think it's an issue. Fast charging or not, it's the lazy way out when a simple board redesign would eliminate end-user headache.
Apple should have made a charging cradle just like those for iphones. Flipping a mouse upside down feels unnatural.
I like that idea but that would be an extra device sitting on top of your desk, Apple always strives for simplicity and cleanliness. I love my magic mouse and I don't see a problem leaving it charging overnight.
@@ecu8r Having a mouse upside down on my desk with a cable getting out of its guts is the most "non apple" and "non clean" thing I can think of, even if it happens overnight :D
@@ecu8r simplicity? Apple is the same company that uses type c in their tablets and laptops but uses proprietary charing port for their phones which is more fragile than type C. Are you sure? Wouldn't a company want to cause their customers as little inconvenience as possible by allowing them to having carry just one cable for charging all their devices.
This channel is normally pretty good at providing an insight into Apple's thinking, but I have to say that this particular video just comes off as making excuses for a poor choice on Apple's part. Basically, there are no advantages to this design and obvious disadvantages, no excuse for it.
As someone who has been using various mice for multimedia creation over decades - this is straight up one of the most horrid mice ever designed. This is a perfect example of apple completely going against their "user experience first" approach and prioritizing nothing more than aesthetics. I would rather use a bottom of the range mini laptop wired mouse than that pancake.
Honestly that's probably for the better, having something that uses rechargeable battery plugged in ALL the time isn't good for the battery.
That's not true for Lithium batteries, particularly ones not exposed to heat that could shorten their lifespan further at full charge. It's far more damaging to Lithium batteries to actually run them constantly through charge / discharge cycles than to keep them topped up at room temperature (or a bit higher given hand temperature).
That and Apple could always afford capping charging at less than 100% (e.g. 85%) if that were such an issue, given they already last for months on end according to users.
Now for a product of this caliber the number of charge / discharge cycles it goes through may be relatively little so the balance might tip in favor of keeping charge at lesser values on average but I'm tackling the general idea here.
There is another major reason. The lightning cable isn't tearproof (and making it tearproof would make it ugly). Having the people use the mouse when plugged in would result in significant tear.
Interesting, I wonder if that thought actually contributed to this design choice?
That is the stupidest thing I have ever read, and I watched this video with subtitles on.
@@orvvro It most probably did. They couldn’t make a different lightning connecter for the mouse because some people would still use their iPhone’s connector (if they lost the mouse’s wire or it stops working) which isn’t tearproof.
It’s obvious that they deliberately made it so that people don’t use it when plugged in. It’s been so many years and there’s also been another iteration since (magic mouse 3). They didn’t just leave it as is because they didn’t feel like redesigning. It would take minimal effort to redesign something that simple.
You don’t charge the mouse with the cable coming from the ceiling. There’s a slight bend to it which wears it down as well.
Personally, I prefer the Magic Trackpad over the mouse due to the ergonomics. While portability is better with the mouse, the gesture support on the trackpad absolutely smokes it. To each their own, though 🤷♂️
Still have a battery powered Magic Mouse from around 2012-2014. Used it only a handful of times

@@wta1518 LOL. Well, there's always idiotic decisions even in the best of products, it's almost impossible to make a 'perfect product' that's perfect for every customer. Sharing the thinking about design decisions really helps understand and choose whether the product is right for you :)
@@anubhav9000 or you can have fucking common sense to not have the port on the bottom. But given that you're an apple user it's natural that your brain isn't working at all
With many things apple. There is always a reason. Personally i have never found the magic mouse to be comfortable at all to use regardless of where it is charged from. I use a logitech mouse on my mac.
I don’t use a Mac, but I have used the Magic Mouse before. I agree. They’re way too flat for my liking.
Indeed. It was designed for people with finger tip grip style, not very comfy for other grip style and the gloss surface makes multi finger gestures difficult as a result because there is no way to keep the mouse in place with thumb and pinky while performing these gestures. Its clearly form over function.
Wrong, Apple always puts function over form. Just look at the original iMac mouse from 1998. That's ergonomic perfection.
This channel always finds a justification for apples bad buisness practices and design flaws
@@craigjensen6853 So … what is the function of the Magic Mouse? How does the devices form factor improve on this function?
The aesthetics decision makes whole lot of sense. Thank you for explaining it, I was really not understanding that at all.
"Those complaints are probably coming from people who don't even use the products in the first place"
Well I don't use it because it's a stupid product. There are 483537562 mice with cables on front, some of them as thin as apple's mouse. They could have easily done this. They just decided to make sure people don't use it plugged in. As simple as that. A keyboard doesn't really lose it's magic when plugged in, but a mouse does. Also 9 hours is pathetic even if charged in 2 minutes. Total capacity is 1 month and you have to charge it like charging a phone. That's just one more thing to remember. I am using a logitech G305 which is a small wireless gaming mouse that lasts me literally a year on high performance mode with infinitely higher precision and poll rate than apple's mouse, and it doesn't have a stupid charging port at the bottom
Finally someone tht agree with me 👍
Came to understand this shit.
Edit: 2 minutes charging for 9 hours!!! Apple haters didnt tell me that.
This explanation sounds more like defending Apples dumb mistakes. If some functionality like quick charging is "Good Enough" doesn't mean you can take away a such a simple easy great feature. Only true Apple Fanboys will agree to the explanation given in the video.
No offense: This is just constructive criticism
Yeah but like you can just charge it when you are sleeping.
@@crosstr15 You can also just charge it when you are sleeping with a mouse that has the port in a sane place. It's objectively a worse design.
my PS4 controller internal battery faced burnout because I was leaving it plugged in while using it. It wasn't holding a charge and the meter registered as low the entire time, forcing it to shut off completely when unplugged. I had to reset it but nothing worked. I then learned about the warning to never do what I did and replaced the battery with an aftermarket one and never played while plugged in again. I have a charging base now.
This may be the case with the mouse. It's a longevity feature to prevent battery bulge and burnout.
"it charges fast, so it doesn't matter that the charging port is at the worst possible location", well that's a new logic
Solution: place the transformer in the same location but before converting it, take the pure raw power from the cable and just use basically an extension cord. Modern technology would likely allow the components to shrink to fit such a cable and I think the best part of all to me is how apple called their mouse “loved by customers” which is such a good joke
They know what the solution is. They just want you to buy another one as backup and keep buying new ones when the battery degrades, since you can't use it wired as a last resource.
@@josephs3973 apple wouldn’t do that. Honestly look at the magic keyboard, though this cheese wouldn’t work well in a keyboard
As a user, I can confirm Greg's point. Plugging the mouse shortly while taking a break can make it last for the rest of the day, while plugging it in during the lunch break can charge it to almost full capacity. Also, Magic Mice come with incredibly powerful batteries for such tiny devices. I've been using mine for five years now, and even though the battery has obviously degraded it still lasts months on one charge. The mouse itself is probably going to fail first before I need to consider replacing it due to insufficient battery life, and it's going to be years.
im presenting to you..... cables
no need to charge, and lasts surely more than the mouse itself
They want you to buy two mouses.
genius!
i saw a magic mouse with a cable in a shop. nearest part of lightning was lightest so you can use it while charging
Hey, I have some issues with this explanation. I get that it takes money in r&d and tooling to significantly alter the design of a product, but there is indeed an issue I would like for you to have mentioned. And that is the fact that batteries degrade with time, it's a fundamental property of rechargeable cells. Let's say I upgrade on a less frequent basis than most, say every 6-7 years. I'm fairly certain that the magic mouse won't keep its endurance that long, so unless I buy newer ones get the battery replaced, I cannot use it. I believe I'd be able to had the carge port been parallel to the ground. This would force me to spend more on a mouse that's fundamentally fine, and I don't that's a good time
The maximum capacity of the battery will degrade, recharge will not. Lets say the battery capacity falls from 100% to 60%, after 5 years. Full battery of those mice lasted for 30 days, so even with a degrated battery you can still charge it for 2 mins and get 9 hours. A degrated battery has nothing to with the 2 min charge.A degrated battery does not cause issues with the charging time to the current battery capacity level. A degrated battery will only lower battery life.
“Those complaints are probably coming from people who don’t even use the product in the first place” (cit.). Yes, sure, it always happens like this!!! Good job man
Hit the nail on the head
Yeah, not true. I've used the magic mouse, and it is the most inconvenient and badly designed mouse I have ever used.
@@Paulygon Yeah, but with a mouse with removable batteries it takes 2 minutes to find a AA battery, and you only have to do that ever 365 days or so.
@@Paulygon It's almost as if I wasn't talking about a Magic Mouse.
I wouldn't buy a device that could be made useless to me for even a couple minutes. Also, it's a terrible design for my hands. Would just be constant cramping.
So how do you tell the computer to sleep when plugging the mouse in wakes it up?
While I'm a well known anti-mac person despite learning to program on the apple 2 and 2e back in the late 90's, I still object to apple's more recent attitude of form before function.
This speaks of design laziness more than anything, and that bugs me.
this also means that in critical infrastructure, I'm going to use a wired USB mouse or not an apple, as 2 minutes in an industrial process environment could be costly in a number of ways.
I have grown up in, and worked in, environments where little things like this can become the final link in the chain of disaster, and therefore I have little tolerance of it.
They are prioritizing the looks of their computers over functionality. It's irrelevant whether the mouse can be charged quickly or whether the battery lasts a lot. Recently they seemed to have changed that slightly considering the new macbook is a bit thicker and drops the touch bar.
Greg, this video made me laugh. Because I agree with you. I use the Magic Mouse and Keyboard all the time. They are wonderful devices and I have noticed that charging them is a simple break or over night process.
Thank you for this input and see you in the next one.
Exactly! haters will always look for small things to put Apple down but the fact is the mouse stays on several days. I love the mental athletics some (not all) Apple users go through to justify stupidity of some Apple's design choices.
I’ve been dying to know why, thank you 🙏
Factual 💯🙏
Not a valid explanation. I use the mouse and to charge it at the bottom , it’s a hassle. Not every human are meant to be the same. We tend to forget things like charging the mouse so we use and charge instead to ensure that it can hold charges in the future while our work is being done . And if that’s not an issue, why do still people complain ? I rather switch to something else soon .
I respect some of your video explained about apple but not this one, battery degrades overtime meaning you will have to charge it more often.
Easier to explain is that it saves them money, no need to design means less money spent while maintaining a good amount of profit from the same accessories, and Macbook lineup is probably their focus and they have have a real good track pad that making a magic mouse seems like a bulk to the package.
It isn't issue if you remember to plug in the mouse when you're done with it. I don't remember and i prefer wired mouses because of latency but also damn batteries.
I love how this guy can always turn Big A's stupid design to become one exceptionally genius design that no one else can think of.. I'd be very eager to have him on our marketing team so that all our bugs and flaws can be turned instantly into indigenous features! 😂😂
Although he’s probably a fan of the company, he doesn’t seem to put many personal opinions in his videos. He presents the facts and let’s you decide what to make of it. People do the exact same things for other companies.
It's probably also that they don't want the lightning cable to wear out. Moving the mouse back and forth is hard on the port and cable. They could get around this by using a trident design (cable in the center and plastic re-enforcements on either side) but Apple doesn't like throwing off the A E S T H E T I C.
Or just use a more durable port like USB C
Poor old lightning cable can't handle typical daily tear and wear. Classic Apple.
I used the mouse at work where i had a iMac, and suddenly it's empty right in the middle of work. Then I need to find a cable or replace the batteries. At that moment I'm annoyed to have to charge from the bottom even tho it's short feels like an inconvenience and poor design choice. It's not making my life easier it makes it frustrating knowing that they knew that could happen but decided not to do anything about it. If the charge port was on the grond it would have been just as good looking (who looks at a mouse from the front?) but it gives the option to keep on going. I switched to Windows for work using a Logitech G403 and I'm so glad i did, more buttons, feels alot better in the hand and i don't even notice the cable. It might not look as "sexy" as a iMac and people judge you because a "real designer" uses a Mac and that's just not true. Software works just as well on a Windows computer and the final work you deliver is just as good maybe even better. I do like the iPhone though so i'm not 100% switched :)
In response to your closing comments, I disagree based on my experience. I owned and regularly used the Magic Mouse before switching to the Logitech MX Master 3s, which is superior in functionality and ergonomics. Additionally, its front charging port allows for use while charging, highlighting the unfortunate design of the Magic Mouse.
I still use the old style magic mouse and keyboard. The difference is got AA rechargeable batteries. My problems are solved. And it won't be ewaste when I can easily replace the batteries! Let's go Green 🍏
Rechargeable AAs are seriously underrated. Like, good ones can last well up to a decade with basically no capacity drop and are pretty recyclable when they finally die.

"How can we get people to buy 2 mice?"
Just got the newest version of this mouse, and had used the original removable battery one for a year or so back in the day. Biggest gripe with this mouse is that it's way way way too low profile. I don't understand their design language in regards to that. Issue I have is the click function of the top glass will constantly get impeded by my thumb on the side because there isn't enough room below it to comfortable position it. If they had made this mouse with ~10mm more depth, it would be an amazing accessory.
I usually charge my mouse when im not using it. When it hits below 50%-30% its time to top up. The batteries do last quiet long so i dun run into any issues to where the port is located.
It would be awesome if they just made a new mouse with useable tracking and usb charging and regardless of the theories in this video it would still make much more sense to put the charger into a normal place. Oh and give it an actual ergonomic shape. I really tried loving it because I'm heavily invested in the apple ecosystem and I love apple products but their mouse is just utter garbage it has very slow and inaccurate tracking, it's very unergonomic and uncomfortable to use , lighting should fuck off and come included with usb c. Other then the fact that it's really beautiful and elegant it's a piece of shit product. I bought the Logitech mx anywhere 3 and while it doesn't feel as nice and doesn't look as stylish, it's a hundred times more useable.
"Complaints coming from people who don't even use" is the main issue of Apple and anti-Apple meme it seems. Wonder how should Apple stop it.
But lets be honest, we all know the 'magic' mouse along with every other apple accessory loses battery really quick and takes forever to charge again
I'd like to offer another viewpoint. Consider that operating the keyboard while plugged in doesn't impact its usability in any way. The keyboard stays stationary while it is being used, so there is no disadvantage to operate it while "tethered". However, by definition the mouse is moved while being used, and the cable can impair its usability by limiting its range of motion, or getting tangled up with another cable. I'd like to believe Apple DID intentionally place the charging port where they did, not to avoid a redesign, and not to avoid conflation with their wired mouse line; but to prevent the user from setting up the mouse in a configuration that would cause the usability to suffer.
To prevent the user from setting up the mouse in a configuration that would cause the usability to suffer Apple made the decision of forcing the user to occasionally setup the mouse in a configuration where it is completely unusable?
Because the options being 100% usable and 0% usable is so much better than 100% usable or 95% usable.
This logic is fascinatingly stupid. Maybe step outside Apple's walled garden for once.
It's not poor design, it's a feature that makes it less convenient so apple can save a buck on tooling. Great explanation.
That "controversy" always weirded me out. It's such a small and odd thing to have strong negative feelings about.
I mean it's poor design. I can see why people are angry.
@@champion1859 It's not healthy to be angry about the design of a product you don't use. It's the last point of the video and I can confirm it's the case because if you read any reddit thread about it, it's painfully obvious that they don't know anything about how the mouse works, how long it lasts, how fast it charges and whether or not you're warned about it being low on battery. It's just a circlejerk like hating pineapple on pizza or the word "moist".

It's a simple design choice.
You would have to replace mouse as batteries wear out. If changing port was in front than user will keep using it even batteries are flat through wire power.
Sale of mouse will drop resulting in loss of precision revenue.
People.. this is a NON issue.. you charge the mouse weeks apart.. months perhaps.. and a 5 min refill will keep you going for hours again.. So grab a cofee every month .. and chill!
Come on..
Yes! I never understood why people was complaining about this. Its actually a good thing to plug in your mouse and get up from your desk and do something. Go for a walk!
I changed to Apple from Windows last year because my PC was old and I was sick of the changes Windows upgrades put me through after Windows 10 got started. I shelled out for the Magic Mouse and keyboard and am really sorry I did as I find them to be very uncomfortable to use. They are very flat and the keyboard has no tilt to it. The keyboard needs to be raised about 1/2" in the front and 3/4" in the back. The mouse is hard to grip and I worry about dropping it. The mouse also causes my cursor to inexplicably make little jogs to the side at times. The charging of the mouse takes all night. The Logitech MX is way more comfortable, slightly cheaper and I wish I had bought it instead.
This guy sure does have some common sense! Keep put the great content Greg! 🔥
I appreciate the effort to justify this, but at the end, it just came out as Apple just doesn't care enough to redesign the product since they know that most of the people who buys their products (i.e. the people who use these products) will still buy the mouse regardless of the inconvenience, because ecosystem.
charging port is also in a prime place to collect grit

Great explanation but my issue with Apple is greed. I have a m1 MacBook with only 2 lighting ports. If I buy a $1500 Mac it should have at least 4 to charge all this stuff overnight.
