Why iPhones Don't Use USB-C

  • In the past five years, USB-C has become the go-to connector for a wide range of devices. It’s used on most android phones, notebooks, tablets, game consoles, headphones, and even accessories like mice, keyboards, and external storage drives. But when it comes to Apple’s most popular product, the iPhone, USB-C has yet to be adopted. Instead, every model of iPhone still uses a Lightning connector that was introduced eight years ago with the iPhone 5. This has led people to wonder why Apple hasn’t transitioned the iPhone to USB-C, especially for a company who has a reputation of being the first to adopt new standards. So in this video, I’m going to explain why Apple hasn’t transitioned the iPhone to USB-C, and what that means for their users.

Apple chooses to keep lightning because it is more durable. Example: take a cup of dirt or sand, jam a USB-C cable into it and try to plug it into a port.. it won't, it will be clogged because it has that female end on both sides. You can do that same thing with a lightning cable, shake it off real quick and easily still plug it into the phone, this is once again because it is a solid male connection, there's no "hole" on the inside of the lightning port like there is USB-C. This is a test that has actually been done internally, Now alot of people simply think about ohhhhh what charges faster?! The fact is the majority of people don't need a 65w megacharge or whatever, most people just charge their phones at night. So in order for the phone to last for several years, it is a better long-term view for Apple to use a solid male connection (such as lightning) over a male+female combo connection like USB-C. Samsung plans on you replacing your phone every year, that's why they barely get 1-2 years of updates, whereas Apple is STILL updating the iPhone 6s from 2015.. Apple looks more at long term durability than any other manufacturer does.
EDIT: Someone may ask "but why then use USB-C for the non-pocketable devices like iPad?" Good question, that was done since non-pocketable devices such as the iPad are alot less prone to debris/lint than a phone that is always in a pocket that may become dirty. That's why the iPhone specifically needs that solid male to female connection, and seems to work fine for iPads as they generally never leave the home. @Slytzel Před 2 lety +6

@@brewergamer That is an interesting thought, but I don't think that it is convincing. First off, although the cable is male, the phone port is female. The point about the iPhone itself beeing more durable is therefore not valid. Only the cable is more durable as a male connector. That can be replaced and has nothing to donwith how pockatable the device is. Also, the lightning cable is insanely slow by nowadays standards. That is just not worth it and for antablet that is supposed to work as anwork station, it is too inferior.

This dude is so full of sh!t lmao.
He is not even making any sense.
Apple decided to not go with the Type C in order for not getting any backlash in 2014, ok fine now it's been 10 years and they even changed the charge battery speed so people would anyway change they power bricks and cables so why not use that chance? Plus they didn't stutter a second when they had to remove the brick even if they had just changed the cable to Type C - lighting all of a sudden, forcing people to get a new brick that wasn't included in the box if they wanted to use the new cable lmao, all this for the environment and yet they are now opting to transition to a wireless charger that is much lesser eco-friendly since like 40% of the energy is wasted entirely.
This is all bullcrap, don't act like there aren't adapters from Micro USB to Type C for people to keep their old cable, they could provide the adapter in the box for the first year to ease the transition from lighting to Type C, plus I'm sure if they included a Type C in the box they would get almost no backlash since now Type C is the most common cable and many people who use iPhones also use iPads now own a Type C cable so they wouldn't be that mad to have a better cable included.
All in all this is just bullshit to justify Apple, but the only reason they keep lighting is because the sales of the cables and the royalties they earn from lighting accounts for billions of dollars in revenue each year, and who the f cares about the environment or customers if they earn billions from it, and the same is gonna be for magsafe since its their patent again. @Brewergamer and lightning ports cant get dirty? I have a few problems with this.
First, Planned obsolescence is something that most phone companies have been doing for literal years at this point, Samsung does it, LG did it I'm fairly sure Google does it, and yes, Apple does it. Apple wants you to buy the newest phone every year too. They flat out admitted to throttling older phones with software updates.
Second, USB-C is much more durable and dust resistant than you give it credit for, I have a switch, which uses USB-C and its dock has been sitting with the port facing up, without a cover, for almost a year, the connection not only works, but fits in just as well as it did when i bought the thing, and i bought it for playing handheld specifically.
Third, USB-C is not just about power delivery, its about data transfer as well. right now it takes nearly an hour to back up my phone to itunes, which makes sense because lightning is stuck with USB 2.0 speeds. USB-C is a USB 3.0/3.1/whatever USB is naming their standards compliant standard, meaning it can transfer data much faster than the 480MBit/s that lightning offers. 10Gbit/s is the max for USB 3.1 gen 2)

I think what the video meant was that if they switched to USB-C in 2014, only two years after switching to Lightning, that would be a PR nightmare as it’s a big ask to your consumers to potentially switch cables twice in the span of 3 years.
So they chose to wait out on USB-C while other Android phones took the lead in that. But by the time it would’ve been enough time that it would make sense to make another switch, Apple was just was no longer interested in switching. Both because so many other companies “beat them to the punch” but also because that way they can feed into their idea of an isolated Apple ecosystem. It’s impossible to leave the ecosystem without ditching every single Apple product you own, nowadays, and lightning still being used in a lot of their products is a symptom of that business strategy.
But sure, if they were to switch to it in the next iPhone, it would no longer be a PR nightmare because it has been an entire decade since lighting, and they sort already started a kind of transition with the iPhone 12, and the iPad and MacBook lineups. But it’s clear that USB-C is not the direction their going for with the future of iPhones.

USB-C has a male & female connection on both sides of the port, this makes it alot more prone to debris than a solid male to female connection like lightning.
Unfortunately if Apple buckles to the pressure and puts USB-C on iPhone, you would see a drop in the overall durability of the iPhone over years.
