Apple has had a long history considering the company was founded in 1976. And over that period, we’ve seen changes in their product designs, but most people haven’t noticed the subtle change in how Apple names their products. If you were an Apple fan in the early 2000’s, you might’ve used an iMac, iBook, or iPod. But Apple fans today might be using an Apple Watch, Apple TV, or Apple pencil. And although there are still products from what I call the ‘i’ era, like the iPhone and iPad, it’s worth exploring how Apple’s product name strategy has changed over the last two decades, and learn why those changes was made.

Agreed. I think they remove it for certain products. iTV sounds like it could be anything that has that abbreviation and iWatch sounds creepy. One thing I love about Apple's product names is how the names become so iconic, they almost become synonymous with whatever product line you're talking about. Back when the iPod was popular, I remember kids at school would call pretty much any MP3 player an iPod, because it rolled off the tongue a lot quicker than "MP3 Player", and people knew what you were talking about when you said iPod. It's almost a similar story with the iPhone and iPad, where people know you're talking about a smart phone or tablet when you say those names. It's kinda like that whole joke about a kid playing a video game on an Xbox and the mom coming in saying "How long are you gonna stay on that Nintendo?" The same way Nintendo is practically synonymous with video games, Apple products tend to be the same way. "Those kids and their damn iPhones"...it's always the go to word when talking about smart phones, whether you're an iOS person, Android person, or don't use a smart phone at all. And even if they don't become household names, for example the HomePod and Apple TV, the names are straight forward and you know what you're getting. When you hear "HomePod", you know it's a music player for the home, and well Apple TV needs no explanation. Other companies tend to use some cool snazzy sounding word to sell their product, like Samsung and their Galaxy phones...but does Galaxy really tell you what you're getting? Microsoft calls their tablets "Surface"....but unless you stretch your imagination that doesn't tell me right away that it's a tablet. I don't wanna go as far as saying Apple products are named for idiots who can't tell what's what, but what the names do is effectively tell you everything you need to know about the product. You know that the Mac is a regular desktop, and that the MacBook is a laptop. Just that subtle change, adding Book to the end of the name, is all you need to get the point across that it's a laptop. It rolls off the tongue, and the names become as iconic as the products themselves. I'm not as big a fan of the products that are just named Apple ______, like the Apple Watch and Apple Pencil...I'm more of a fan of the ones that sound simple, yet futuristic, like something you'd find in an episode of Star Trek. I don't know what it is about iPhone...but just adding that "i" makes it sound like a futuristic product. And iPod, AirPods, HomePod...the whole Pod suffix can make anything sound like it's from the future.

I think the main reason they are dropping the “i” in its name is mainly the trademark issues. The video skipped a lot of the trademark issues that Apple went through when the iPhone was released for example, there was an “iPhone” already out there that was owned by Cisco prior to the release. The switch to the Apple in names of products does have a lot to do with brand recognition but mainly for the simple fact that the Apple logo is trademarked and protected so there won’t be more issues going forward or hopefully less issues going forward with them since they already own the trademark for the Apple logo. I think it really comes down to Apple getting tired of all the lawsuits and trademark issues.

You forget a very important issue: many people registered all sort of products with the "I" prefix such as iCar, iWatch, ITV etc. so that if apple would like to use it, they'd have to pay them a huge fee. This even happened to the iPhone name which was used by another company long before the release of the iPhone. they simply got inspired by iMac and iBook and iPad.

I think they are doing so to avoid getting the i everywhere because it will become a common scheme and lose its value. Also a product with different naming scheme would get a chance to build its own reputation and niche rather than selling under the hood of the an umbrella term. That is what being iconic is...

In the last minute of the video you gave a few possibilities about what Apple might do about the “i” prefix as it relates to iPhone. Seems possibility 1 & 3 are the same suggestion.
    1. They could rename to the phone to “Apple Phone” in the future
    3. They could keep the iPhone name for current products, and drop the name in the future.
    Same thing?

We all how Apple is a valuable brand and in my opinion it would have been better to keep the prefix < i >
Everyone knows about the Apple.. No matter which type of marketing strategy’s Apple Team implement, it will be still the choice of the customers whether to buy it or not at the end of day..

*iThink Tim Cook will not change the iPad to Apple Pad and the iPhone to Apple Phone, because they are the most well-known device names in the world and therefore it would not be fair to change them anyway. However, I didn't know that Apple TV came out in 2006 and that the name Mackintosh had come from an apple. For me Tim Cook did well to call Apple Watch and not iWatch the watch. I am someone who practically only has apple devices at home, even the iPhone 1 (2G) and I would not be happy that in the future Apple could change the names of the most famous devices in the whole world. This is my opinion. still beautiful video, but, since there are also Italians who watch your videos (me), try to speak more slowly so that you don't have to put subtitles*
