Apple has had a long history considering the company was founded in 1976. And over that period, we’ve seen changes in their product designs, but most people haven’t noticed the subtle change in how Apple names their products. If you were an Apple fan in the early 2000’s, you might’ve used an iMac, iBook, or iPod. But Apple fans today might be using an Apple Watch, Apple TV, or Apple pencil. And although there are still products from what I call the ‘i’ era, like the iPhone and iPad, it’s worth exploring how Apple’s product name strategy has changed over the last two decades, and learn why those changes was made. - Věda a technologie

"iPhone" is just WAY too iconic that I hardly doubt that it will ever change. People always know what an "iPhone" is and that its made by Apple. "Apple Phone" would be kinda confusing and it sounds stupid ^^
@Marie Page No. Just no.
Agreed. I think they remove it for certain products. iTV sounds like it could be anything that has that abbreviation and iWatch sounds creepy. I hope that they call their smart glasses that will come in almost all frames and styles iGlass. But maybe that will be their last product with the "i". Apple Glass would sound terrible

The thing is that itv is really big here.
It was one of the first British TV channels and is channel 3 on everything and usually on the main channel section of all TVs, the lower the number the higher the dominance that’s why BBC (oldest British tv channel) is channel 1.
(Itv means independent television to you who didn’t know)
Not surprising that an american company would try and ride rough shot over every one. Check out the litigation that Specialized Bicycle Components have done over the years.

One thing I love about Apple's product names is how the names become so iconic, they almost become synonymous with whatever product line you're talking about. Back when the iPod was popular, I remember kids at school would call pretty much any MP3 player an iPod, because it rolled off the tongue a lot quicker than "MP3 Player", and people knew what you were talking about when you said iPod. It's almost a similar story with the iPhone and iPad, where people know you're talking about a smart phone or tablet when you say those names. It's kinda like that whole joke about a kid playing a video game on an Xbox and the mom coming in saying "How long are you gonna stay on that Nintendo?" The same way Nintendo is practically synonymous with video games, Apple products tend to be the same way. "Those kids and their damn iPhones"...it's always the go to word when talking about smart phones, whether you're an iOS person, Android person, or don't use a smart phone at all. And even if they don't become household names, for example the HomePod and Apple TV, the names are straight forward and you know what you're getting. When you hear "HomePod", you know it's a music player for the home, and well Apple TV needs no explanation. Other companies tend to use some cool snazzy sounding word to sell their product, like Samsung and their Galaxy phones...but does Galaxy really tell you what you're getting? Microsoft calls their tablets "Surface"....but unless you stretch your imagination that doesn't tell me right away that it's a tablet. I don't wanna go as far as saying Apple products are named for idiots who can't tell what's what, but what the names do is effectively tell you everything you need to know about the product. You know that the Mac is a regular desktop, and that the MacBook is a laptop. Just that subtle change, adding Book to the end of the name, is all you need to get the point across that it's a laptop. It rolls off the tongue, and the names become as iconic as the products themselves. I'm not as big a fan of the products that are just named Apple ______, like the Apple Watch and Apple Pencil...I'm more of a fan of the ones that sound simple, yet futuristic, like something you'd find in an episode of Star Trek. I don't know what it is about iPhone...but just adding that "i" makes it sound like a futuristic product. And iPod, AirPods, HomePod...the whole Pod suffix can make anything sound like it's from the future.
🤏🏿
@@GamingFINE yea sorry. clearly i was on crack or something when i wrote all that lmao
After taking algebra 2 in high school I always assumed Apple's i meant imaginary
I think the main reason they are dropping the “i” in its name is mainly the trademark issues. The video skipped a lot of the trademark issues that Apple went through when the iPhone was released for example, there was an “iPhone” already out there that was owned by Cisco prior to the release. The switch to the Apple in names of products does have a lot to do with brand recognition but mainly for the simple fact that the Apple logo is trademarked and protected so there won’t be more issues going forward or hopefully less issues going forward with them since they already own the trademark for the Apple logo. I think it really comes down to Apple getting tired of all the lawsuits and trademark issues.
The death of “i”
dun dun
The only thing I can think of that Greg neglected to mention was the name change from iCal to Calendar.
Plot twist: The “i” was working part time as the Pixar “i” and got brutally killed by a jumping lamp.

I honestly hope Apple never changes the name of the iPhone and iPad. They are just way too iconic and have such a good reputation!
iPad- apple pad
iPhone 11- apple phone 11 pro max
iPod touch- apple pod touch
Nah no thanks apple
U changed the device to make it look more complicated
9:45 Actually, the iPad wasn't the last new Apple product to feature the "i" prefix. Apple did release the iMac Pro in 2017.
that is not a new product it's just an upgrade to an already existing one
Brian Tran Apple had Mac Pro, MacBook Pro and iPad Pro but iMac Pro? Isn’t that the first of its class?
@@epsut again that is just a beef up version of already existing products... it would have to be a new invention

9:30 - Oh Greg, with Apple, you really do believe in "Every cloud has a silver lining"! 😂😂
10:16 - i-Suffix? No. i-Prefix.
Shouldn’t the “i” mean innovation - it makes sense because every product with the “i” is innovative. 😂
Yeah I like that they innovated so much that you can't tell the difference between the iphone 6,7,8 or iPhone X from iPhone 11
No because if you actually read his biography, he himself said that it stood for "internet"

@@jalikzz8931 exactly, alot of the the products apple makes nowadays is carbon copies of their old products or already existing ones

Quality stuff as always!
Can I just say that I'm so glad they called it the Apple Watch and not the iWatch, I think that iWatch just sounds wrong.
When the Apple Watch was released, there was already a smart watch called “iWatch” and apple couldn’t get that name
And the fact that it was I watch, that sounds creepy
I-M WATCH-ING YOU like doesn’t I watch sound creepy
Very interesting ! Thank you !!
I like the icon change. Keep it this time!
Wow
That ad transition tho😶
Linus tech tips could learn a thing or two from this
10:18 "i" prefix, not suffix
I like the i and the naming, it’s perfect the way it is now leaving their most iconic products with the i. Everyone knows who makes the iPhone, iPad and iMac, there is definitely no confusion about who makes those products!
I just wish I would have been smart enough at the time to hang in to my original iBook like I did with several models of the original iMac, including the first Bondi Blue iMac!
You have the smoothest transitions to your sponsor message lol.
Apple is the best when it ha s an'I'
That transition to the ad was so smooth lol
The segue into your sponsor made me chuckle.
I'd say Apple's namings have been great to date, and not confusing at all!
Apple: "Let's sue everyone with the letter "i" in their company name!"
Microsoft:
Android:
Netflix:
@Antonino I know, but google has so many things that I just picked some
Google/Android:
But remember the irony? Apple was an also-ran until the visit that Steve Jobs made to, I think, xerox, and saw the graphic user interface, then filched it free of charge?
I'm sorry, but the "i" can't come to the phone right now...
Why?
Karma oh...
Benedict Tam Cause it’s DEAD
Nice video! I might use Ting
I liked the "Big Cats" idea behind the 10.0x line of OS. Tiger (10.4...) rocks, so does, now, the Mountain era "El Capitan", rocks, too!
What do you mean iPad stopped using the "i" prefix after 2010? It is still called the iPad.
My guess is in the future they won’t name any new products with the i prefix. iPad, iPhone, etc. are familiar enough they don’t need to be changed. Not certain though
Kemba Walkers Burner Still doesn't make sense. No one wants to say Apple phone 12 pro max, or Apple pad pro, doesn't roll off the tongue at all. Which in return will confuse the average consumer
I thought it was Pixar's lamp that killed the letter i of apple
You forget a very important issue: many people registered all sort of products with the "I" prefix such as iCar, iWatch, ITV etc. so that if apple would like to use it, they'd have to pay them a huge fee. This even happened to the iPhone name which was used by another company long before the release of the iPhone. they simply got inspired by iMac and iBook and iPad.
Also, what will happen to the “ i “ prefix of iOS? Will it remove just like they’ve doing now to some other devices?
But that finger at the end of the video 😂

I think they are doing so to avoid getting the i everywhere because it will become a common scheme and lose its value. Also a product with different naming scheme would get a chance to build its own reputation and niche rather than selling under the hood of the an umbrella term. That is what being iconic is...

I would like to see the Apple Phone and Apple Pad (considering they are ditching the i in these products in the nearby future).
In the last minute of the video you gave a few possibilities about what Apple might do about the “i” prefix as it relates to iPhone. Seems possibility 1 & 3 are the same suggestion.
1. They could rename to the phone to “Apple Phone” in the future
3. They could keep the iPhone name for current products, and drop the name in the future.
Same thing?
Lol
No. He meant that a new product could push iPhone into oblivion like iPod.
@@humanityfirst2549 Not to belabor this, but that was possibility 2. Seems possibility 1 & 3 are exactly the same.
We all how Apple is a valuable brand and in my opinion it would have been better to keep the prefix < i >
Everyone knows about the Apple.. No matter which type of marketing strategy’s Apple Team implement, it will be still the choice of the customers whether to buy it or not at the end of day..
*iThink Tim Cook will not change the iPad to Apple Pad and the iPhone to Apple Phone, because they are the most well-known device names in the world and therefore it would not be fair to change them anyway. However, I didn't know that Apple TV came out in 2006 and that the name Mackintosh had come from an apple. For me Tim Cook did well to call Apple Watch and not iWatch the watch. I am someone who practically only has apple devices at home, even the iPhone 1 (2G) and I would not be happy that in the future Apple could change the names of the most famous devices in the whole world. This is my opinion. still beautiful video, but, since there are also Italians who watch your videos (me), try to speak more slowly so that you don't have to put subtitles*
*iLike* the first word of your comment
Is it crazy that I have thought about why for example the Apple Watch isn‘t called iWatch in the past but still the iPad and iPhone are so iconic that I havent even consciously noticed that not one of the new products has the i prefix? Kinda strange to think about right now.
