If you’ve been following Apple since the early 2000s, you probably remember their transition from PowerPC to Intel processors that ended in 2006. Steve Jobs actually invited Intel CEO Paul Otellini onto the stage and they had a two minute long conversation about how much they loved working with each other, how great their engineers were, and how amazing their technology was. But here we are fifteen years later, and Intel is hiring former Mac guy Justin Long to act in commercials denouncing Apple. It’s quite a bizarre turn of events, and in this video, I’m going to explain exactly how Apple and Intel went from friends to foes.

Careful. The Intel ads with Justin Long harken back to the Mac vs. PC ads that Apple released back in the day. Apple’s ads were full of untruths too, like how Macs supposedly offered fun and creativity whereas PCs offered pie charts and spreadsheets (show that ad to any gamer-then or now-and they’d think you were crazy to suggest a Mac for gaming).
Admittedly Intel’s ads are misleading and full of cheap shots too, as Greg pointed out, so I think these kinds of ads are tacky regardless of who makes them. Still, that war started long ago and not by Intel.
By the way, the “PC master race” comment was a bit much. Read “The Cult of Mac” by Leander Kahney, and you’ll see that if one of these companies has an obsessive fan base with an epidemic of superiority complexes, it’s Apple.
All that to say, I love my PC and I love my Apple products. I wish these companies would just get along without all this mudslinging!

I'm honestly waiting for the M1 Mac Pros and hope they keep the current design, if it wasn't for gaming I'd strictly would probably be on Mac (Unless adobe/affinity gets there shit together and releases a port on Linux with full support, wine isn't that great lol) As long as I have 32gb of ram, 8tb of storage, and I can use my own gpu's I'm generally happy.

I think it all started when Intel sued Nvidia back in like 2009, severely hampering Apple's ability to customize the internals of their machines. I'd bet that's when they really started looking into getting their own processors into the Mac, especially since it pretty much coincided with the success of the A4.

I have a mbp 16 inch and I have not suffered that problem with the fans / battery when editing 4k video. However, it is true that it does not last 11 hours but Apple promotes that it does so in more basic tasks. Where if I have suffered that thermal problem is when trying to play video games like GTA V on Windows for example.

I still don’t understand why Apple uses the stupid vague graphs. Like you’d think that after all that work you’d want to display just how far superior your new features are (especially when what you have is very impressive like M1 was), but things like “latest PC laptop chip” and no units for performance just leaves people skeptical and or confused.

    • @cybercery5271

They know that in some applications other stuff will beat them, but in Mac os integrated software they can work their charm

using ARM on a laptop is actually a good idea because ARM is used on smartphone chips where you can't fit a massive battery or cooling system but still need it to last all day and not overheat.

Apple and intel go back much further. Robert Noyce was a mentor to Jobs early in his career. And Jobs was inspired by Noyce to run his business the way he did. You could say that Jobs continued with Apple, what Noyce had started with Intel.

1:21. That is so not true. What happened is that Intel and AMD got embroiled in a CPU war, and that war GREATLY accelerated the evolution of the x86 architecture. Which took x86 from being the budget option, to being more powerful than any other CPU platform on earth. Faster than the PPC stuff, faster than Spark, faster than anything else out there. Also, this x86 war not only was improving x86 at an incredible pace, but it was driving down prices, and it was benefitting from HUGE economies of scale as computers went mainstream on the x86 platform.
Apple on the other hand was the world's largest PPC consumer, and yet they were merely a bit player at that time, not nearly large enough to fund development of the PPC platform against the entire x86 industry. So Motorola, not making the profits required to continue investing into the PPC, couldn't come up with a credible successor for the G4 series. This left Apple casting about for a replacement. Ultimately Apple approached IBM about producing a chip, which IBM did. They decided to turn to their big iron series of CPUs and take the POWER4 and strip it down to produce the 970 (they also added Motorola's SIMD unit from the G4), which Apple branded the G5.
The G5 was a reasonably impressive chip at the time (at that very moment in time it was released), and Apple and IBM thought they'd have no problem scaling it to keep up with the x86 war which was still raging on. When Jobs launched the G5 product line he famously predicted that they were going to have 3Ghz units later that year, and that never happened, ever, in the G5 product line. The problem was the G5 ran SUPER hot (because it was a server chip cut down for the desktop), which is why Apple had to create that cheese greater case to support it, and it was never going to be suitable for laptop use.
As things continued on, it became abundantly clear IBM was not going to be able to get the 970's heat and power figures down, nor were they going to be able to scale the platform. In fact, it was pretty obvious that no one was able to compete against the knockout drag down fight Intel and AMD were engaged in. So ultimately Jobs decided, "if you can't beat'em, join'em" and so despite the fact he loved the Mac being on its own platform, he switched over to Intel.
When Jobs switched Apple over to Intel, NOT ONLY were the Intel processors running cooler and with less power than the IBM 970 (G5) CPUs, but they were also MUCH faster. They were so fast in fact, that Apple's first generation consumer Macbooks were faster than the G5 towers (Apple's Pro desktop product). So, no, PPC chips did not "deliver more raw power than Intel," not by the time Apple switched, and hadn't for quite a while by the time Apple switched. Intel was completely slaughtering the PPC platform by every conceivable metric, and the switch to Intel was an uncompromised victory across every axis of analysis.
