If you’ve been following Apple since the early 2000s, you probably remember their transition from PowerPC to Intel processors that ended in 2006. Steve Jobs actually invited Intel CEO Paul Otellini onto the stage and they had a two minute long conversation about how much they loved working with each other, how great their engineers were, and how amazing their technology was. But here we are fifteen years later, and Intel is hiring former Mac guy Justin Long to act in commercials denouncing Apple. It’s quite a bizarre turn of events, and in this video, I’m going to explain exactly how Apple and Intel went from friends to foes. - Věda a technologie
The fact that Intel has to advertise so badly against Apple just goes to show how highly they actually respect the M1 chip.
yes
Same for AMD. Intel trashed AMD constantly back in the day because they knew there chips were light years better than Intels.
yes I got the Mac mini m1 and it runs so good and it stays cool
@@Korxion sigh my pc runs on an intel chip and on the website it says the battery life is 7 hours but irl it only lasts for 2 hrs or less. Planning to go Apple in three years
@@samweII I might get one used in a few years. I finally got my hands on a mid 2012 MacBook Pro and I love it. The only other Mac I had before was a G3 iMac back in the mid 2000s. Upgraded that thing to OS X Panther, 512mb ram, and a 120gb HDD. Thing was a beast until it was no longer supported by software updates or 3rd party programs.

Back when I start tasting the Apple I heard many were not satisfied with how Tim Cook was running Apple. But, I can see now he’s trying to grow Apple and reach it’s ultimate potential.
The controversies overshadowed their successes. Sure, their products are ridiculously expensive with some over-prioritization to form than function but you have to admit, they know how to make people go "woah".
@@randomduder6692 you’re not wrong when you say a lot of their products are expensive, sometimes even overpriced. Their marketing team is unbeatable though. They know to convince casuals and non-tech people to buy their products. (For example; Ecosystem, Privacy, easy and convenient to use, etc..)
@@deezpleez3832 apple has always had a price mark up from the competition even back in the 80s and 70s with the Macintosh and apple II both were more expensive than the competition but both were fairly successful for computers back then which didn’t really have a massive user base
@@randomduder6692 to be fair though, Apple products no way matches with good budget phones out there in terms of value and even their cheapest phone starts at 400. But if u compare their higher end phones with Samsung or even Hawei’s flagships, it is actually cheaper

Yeah IKR
I bought an MBP M1 about 4 months ago, and it completely smokes my Intel MBP. Even apps that don't run natively and have to run through Rosetta are much faster on the M1. That's a pretty good thing when your emulator and chip runs an app faster than on a natively supported platform.
My family had tons of MacBooks from 2015 that we never upgraded until we got the 2022 M2 MacBook Airs. It's amazing that they're way thinner, cooler in temp, and faster. The Intel MacBooks overheat way too much.

I get it
My only complaint is, they took 6 years to update the MacMini, finally put it out with the i3/i5/i7, and then about a year later they released the Mini with the M1… if I had known I would have waited for the M1… the i5 I have runs hot for reasons I can’t figure out, and there’s a huge fan inside (I know since I did the memory upgrade myself.)
i know why, purposefully thermal throttled
@@enzicoxe yeah, those Intel chips run hot, I knew that, that’s why I didn’t get a MacBook.
I am wondering if the M series chip for the Mac Pro will still be concerned with performance per watt instead of raw performance.
You can have both
Wonderful video.
Hey, where did you get the background music from? I really like it, and would like to be able to listen to it.
What's the background music (piano) you use in this video and other videos?

Just wait till the M1X with 8 high performance cores and 16 GPU cores arrives later in 2021. Properly optimized, it might be even be able to run "AAA" games at full screen resolution and at reasonably high frame rates.
They should have a dedicated gaming mode on macs where the processor is not power limited (only thermal limitations)
That would be great for anyone wanting to game on the go
@@99Teutons I don't think they need that because the M1's performance per watt is so amazing that performance doesn't drop when running on battery. There are so many comparison videos on CZcams where they put the M1 mac's against its competitors like Razerblade for example and found out that not only does the M1 Mac beat those machines significantly when on power but if they were to take off the power for both the devices the performance drops by a huge level for those laptops even when they are on high performance mode while the Macs stay consistent off power supply. Considering that the 16" Macbook Pros come with an 100 watt-hour battery which should easily be able to power that M1x processor and maintain its super high performance on the go.
@@99Teutons nah Macs don't advertise for gaming so I don't think they'll implement something like that
But not many AAA games are build for mac.

At the end of the day, competition is good for us consumers. Apple stopped using them and AMD is now crossing them. So now Intel has a new CEO and they're looking to invest BILLIONS into getting back into the game.
Spoken like a true man
Yup, Apple is attacking them on the laptop side while AMD is attacking from the desktop side.
They need to go all in on one or the other, Laptop chips or desktop chips you can't do both without falling behind both companies
Intel cannot afford to go all in on laptops over desktops, without losing both the enthusiast and overclocking user base.@@TypicalBlox
how do you create these amazing videos everyday?
I swear this man has the smoooooothest sponsor transitions
Funny Apple hire back the PC guy and Intel hire the Mac guy, mismatched haha
Careful. The Intel ads with Justin Long harken back to the Mac vs. PC ads that Apple released back in the day. Apple’s ads were full of untruths too, like how Macs supposedly offered fun and creativity whereas PCs offered pie charts and spreadsheets (show that ad to any gamer-then or now-and they’d think you were crazy to suggest a Mac for gaming).
Admittedly Intel’s ads are misleading and full of cheap shots too, as Greg pointed out, so I think these kinds of ads are tacky regardless of who makes them. Still, that war started long ago and not by Intel.
By the way, the “PC master race” comment was a bit much. Read “The Cult of Mac” by Leander Kahney, and you’ll see that if one of these companies has an obsessive fan base with an epidemic of superiority complexes, it’s Apple.
All that to say, I love my PC and I love my Apple products. I wish these companies would just get along without all this mudslinging!
I literally got that ad right before the vid

I'm honestly waiting for the M1 Mac Pros and hope they keep the current design, if it wasn't for gaming I'd strictly would probably be on Mac (Unless adobe/affinity gets there shit together and releases a port on Linux with full support, wine isn't that great lol) As long as I have 32gb of ram, 8tb of storage, and I can use my own gpu's I'm generally happy.
That transition to the sponsor tho lol
I think it all started when Intel sued Nvidia back in like 2009, severely hampering Apple's ability to customize the internals of their machines. I'd bet that's when they really started looking into getting their own processors into the Mac, especially since it pretty much coincided with the success of the A4.
That sponsor segue. **chef's kiss**
I am planning to upgrade my MacBook Pro to M1 MBP, but a custom-built PC is LOVE. Always. 😍
I have a mbp 16 inch and I have not suffered that problem with the fans / battery when editing 4k video. However, it is true that it does not last 11 hours but Apple promotes that it does so in more basic tasks. Where if I have suffered that thermal problem is when trying to play video games like GTA V on Windows for example.
You should do a tech explained channel

Earliest I’ve been to this channel.
I still don’t understand why Apple uses the stupid vague graphs. Like you’d think that after all that work you’d want to display just how far superior your new features are (especially when what you have is very impressive like M1 was), but things like “latest PC laptop chip” and no units for performance just leaves people skeptical and or confused.
Their graphs have always been like that.
They know that in some applications other stuff will beat them, but in Mac os integrated software they can work their charm
Yeah... I really want iWeb back. Or however the Mac program for website creation was called. It was so awesome.

Well, 2022 marked the end of positive relations with Microsoft and Intel, since they also started to prepare their own ARM based Windows OS, Which also failed long ago with Windows RT
Now i think Microsoft should also make its own proccesor
Your videos and information is amazing. Just one feedback, that looping elevator piano music is really annoying.
Did intel's CEO arrived from 2020 for that conference?
Can you do a video on why Apple didn't but ARM?
Literally got that intel ad before watching this video
All they as it showed in the keynote picture back in 2006. was "projected" performance per watt. and when it was actually launched it some 2+ years down the line those estimates was so bad.
It's funny to see these ads now which I never saw as they could never use these here in Germany. :D
using ARM on a laptop is actually a good idea because ARM is used on smartphone chips where you can't fit a massive battery or cooling system but still need it to last all day and not overheat.
And now one of Intel's gaming benchmark results doesn't even hold up anymore, because Metro Exodus recently got a Mac port that can run on M1 using Rosetta 2 (and with respectable performance).
Justin long. Perfect name.

Apple and intel go back much further. Robert Noyce was a mentor to Jobs early in his career. And Jobs was inspired by Noyce to run his business the way he did. You could say that Jobs continued with Apple, what Noyce had started with Intel.

1:21. That is so not true. What happened is that Intel and AMD got embroiled in a CPU war, and that war GREATLY accelerated the evolution of the x86 architecture. Which took x86 from being the budget option, to being more powerful than any other CPU platform on earth. Faster than the PPC stuff, faster than Spark, faster than anything else out there. Also, this x86 war not only was improving x86 at an incredible pace, but it was driving down prices, and it was benefitting from HUGE economies of scale as computers went mainstream on the x86 platform.
Apple on the other hand was the world's largest PPC consumer, and yet they were merely a bit player at that time, not nearly large enough to fund development of the PPC platform against the entire x86 industry. So Motorola, not making the profits required to continue investing into the PPC, couldn't come up with a credible successor for the G4 series. This left Apple casting about for a replacement. Ultimately Apple approached IBM about producing a chip, which IBM did. They decided to turn to their big iron series of CPUs and take the POWER4 and strip it down to produce the 970 (they also added Motorola's SIMD unit from the G4), which Apple branded the G5.
The G5 was a reasonably impressive chip at the time (at that very moment in time it was released), and Apple and IBM thought they'd have no problem scaling it to keep up with the x86 war which was still raging on. When Jobs launched the G5 product line he famously predicted that they were going to have 3Ghz units later that year, and that never happened, ever, in the G5 product line. The problem was the G5 ran SUPER hot (because it was a server chip cut down for the desktop), which is why Apple had to create that cheese greater case to support it, and it was never going to be suitable for laptop use.
As things continued on, it became abundantly clear IBM was not going to be able to get the 970's heat and power figures down, nor were they going to be able to scale the platform. In fact, it was pretty obvious that no one was able to compete against the knockout drag down fight Intel and AMD were engaged in. So ultimately Jobs decided, "if you can't beat'em, join'em" and so despite the fact he loved the Mac being on its own platform, he switched over to Intel.
When Jobs switched Apple over to Intel, NOT ONLY were the Intel processors running cooler and with less power than the IBM 970 (G5) CPUs, but they were also MUCH faster. They were so fast in fact, that Apple's first generation consumer Macbooks were faster than the G5 towers (Apple's Pro desktop product). So, no, PPC chips did not "deliver more raw power than Intel," not by the time Apple switched, and hadn't for quite a while by the time Apple switched. Intel was completely slaughtering the PPC platform by every conceivable metric, and the switch to Intel was an uncompromised victory across every axis of analysis.
Yay I finally made it! Anyways great video as always!
Wars are a source of Inspiration.
The more i watch your videos the more i want an iphone. Idk why
