One correction: Apple was not the first company to produce a phone with 2 cameras. LG Optimus 3D and HTC EVO 3D both came out in 2011 with dual cameras. There are lots of innovations that apple was late to adopt and that other phone companies had on their phones years before Apple did. Lots of people hold on to having iPhones because they don't want to get used to a new system and, as you mentioned, because of the FOMO.

Whoops, we never hear of this, apparently. Junkies have been buying Windows for 25 years, hating every version, but still buy it, because they are used to it? Windows being late adding features? The reason Apple and all other smartphone companies don't seem to be innovating anymore is rather simple, phones are a mature market. As you said, there's only so much you can shove into a glass slab before there's not much else that can be improved. Nowadays, it's mostly software that you will see updates in with very marginal upgrades to the hardware. Even cameras don't receive significant hardware upgrades because they're limited by size, they'll instead be improved through improvements in image processing. You shouldn't be worried about how these companies "don't innovate" because they're making drastic improvements in software, and people don't buy phones that much anymore because it's sort of like buying a car. You don't buy a car every year, but once you do buy a car after a few generations and revisions, you will see those improvements. That's what sort of market the iPhone is in now.
However, back on topic, you should be concerned with how much they are willing to push software and how much it will integrate and act as a parasite on our lives. These companies will of course seek to occupy and obtain as much information about you through software, and they will absolutely have all the information they could possibly ever want with VR sets.

Im still using the 2016 SE, but its exclusively used as mp3 player (3,5mm jack, so nice!) and for jailbreak things. Replaced even recently the battery the 2nd time for at least 1-2 more years of usability, the first replacement battery was already at like 30-40% health and drained very fast.
My daily driver is the iPhone 12 Mini. Not much bigger, yet so much more potent than the old, nice SE. At first, especially the protruding lens bump was just horrible, but now knowing the camera bump of the iPhone 15, i began to love my 12 Mini more than before the iPhone 15.

      Removable batteries
With a spare you are not tied down to a cable or wireless charging which also uses a cable. You can charge the spare and go anywhere you want
You can charge your spare battery at any speed you want really remember slower charging prolongs your battery life
Since you are charging your spare battery outside your phone there will never be heat buildup inside your phone thus prolonging your phone which is great for environment
If you charge your spare battery at a slower charge you prolong the battery life span and won't need another battery for longer period of time instead of just charging fast constantly on one battery.
Since the phone uses removable it is already half opened basically so it makes it waaaay easier to open up. I could upon up my LGv20 is basically 4 minutes you just unscrew 20 philips head screws and that's it
There are special phone cases you can buy for phones with removable batteries which lets you use much bigger battteries
On my LGv20 I use two 8600mah batteries
Which is way more then the current max we already have reached which is 6000mah on these newer phones released.
So you could have a bigger battery on a smaller sized screen phone.
The LGv20 is only 5.7 inches in length and packs a 8600mah battery.
I could actually get a case that would have enabled me to use a whopping 10,000mah battery and have the phone still be small just more fatter.
These are all the advantages you get with removable battery. Essential the fastest charging method to any phone period especially if you get two spare batteries you will never have to be tethered to any cable I assure you
I currently am using the Xpreria 5 ll and this phone doesn't have a removable battery which I dearly dearly miss from my LGv20 I used before the Xperia.
I love the Xperia 5 ll just greatly miss having a removable battery
It is indeed the best feature off all time on any phone and greatly greatly helps the environment
There's only so much resources out there we have to reserve it as much as possible and phones not having removable batteries is the worst thing on a smartphone you can have
Plus we now can easily back everything up on the internet... so really... do we need IP68 rating phones anymore?
I been using phones for over 20 years and have yet to drop my phone in any water.

It's shiny editing, with 30 seconds of research. Most of the content is his standard "everything sucks, people are too poor to afford stuff". Never mind 10% of the country has over a million in assets, and the top 20% drive most spending, he focuses on how terrible everything is because it's just a way to cater to his audience by complaining about everything.
New phones that Apple releases are purely for the chip and the camera. The new chip is amazing. Console level graphics (ps3-ps4), hardware ray tracing, Nvidia level dlss, just to name a few new features. He obviously doesn't understand chips because this is huge. Every apple chip is a cutting edge marvel. But ya, if you don't push your phone to the limit, of course it doesn't feel like an upgrade. It's like giving your grandma an rtx 4090. Of course she won't notice.

One point about the batteries they use for the iPhone 15 is they use lithium-cobalt because it is more energy dense than lithium-phosphate which makes sense in the context of a phone since you typically want it to be light weight while having a large battery capacity.
Lithium-phosphate are more sustainable and better than the environment but are less energy dense. On the bright side though they are more thermally stable (kind of irrelavent for the temp a phone operates at) and have a longer cycle life meaning they can be charged and discharged more often over its lifetime. This is potentially another reason they don't want to use this because it would give less incentive to change to a new phone since the battery will degrade less over time.
And on another note they're not actually the driving force for the large increase of price of cobalt over the recent years, automobiles are since they need much larger batteries. For some reason despite thermal stability, safety and cycle life being more important for the application of an automobile they still opt in for lithium-cobalt batteries instead (with a bit of nickel).

100% agree. I’ve been doing the same. Went from 4 to 7. Then from 7 to 11. Both times because the phones just reached the end of their lives. This definitely made the feature improvements much more noticeable. Still have my 11 and gonna wait another year or two before I upgrade again. Totally agree that repairs a d battery replacement needs to become normal.

I once won an iPhone 11 in a contest. I've been using it till today and I love it. I'll never change it. There's no real point of buying a new iPhone after the 11, since the X isn't getting any new upgrades. I know my 11 will be next to be executed, but that's fine. Apple, honestly, isn't (and never will be) what it was before.

Back in 05-06, I was watching G4tv, specifically Attack of the Show. The people were talking about smartphones and the host asked this guy what he thought the future of smartphones would look like. This guy said that the touch screen was the last big innovation when it comes to phones. He continued by saying something like, here on out we won't see physical changes anymore, but just upgrades to software. Here we are almost 20 years later and the phone I am typing this out on looks just like the smartphones back then, just a little bigger and more camera lenses.

And? A smartphone has a purpose and it fills that perfectly; it doesn't need 'constant innovations.' An innovation is going from old cellphones to TOUCH SCREEN; adding an extra button to an old cellphone is not innovation, so why do people consider multiple lenses an 'innovation?'

The 11 is a workhorse with enough storage and most of the features you get with todays phones, and if you take the case off and clean it up, you can really see the craftsmanship behind it and it will feel like a new phone again. Unless something breaks or apple decided to implement software to slow it down there really is no need for me to switch. While Samsung's out there releasing the fifth generation of their cutting-edge foldables, the most hyped Apple event this year is them adding USB-C to the iPhone15. AND its got a 60hz display in an era where even $200 phones have 90/120Hz displays. Pretty telling tbh.

I just can't believe people are only calling out Apple for this, this is a thing with nearly all new phones. When they first came out, they were huge upgrades each year but got smaller and smaller each year with upgrades, it's because they can't just innovate some new groundbreaking features each year. You are saying it's for profit but in reality, it's because they simply can't make upgrades every single year. Samsung, Google, LG, and many more companies are just the same, hardly anything new every year. Stop only blaming Apple for this, but don't blame any of the companies, it's just that they can't give you something new and groundbreaking each year. That's just the reality of new tech these days.

I can understand the discontentment regarding lack of progress with each model, seeing it as boring. However, I remember back 10 years when performance in smartphones blistered year by year and made phones rapidly obsolete. My iPhone 4, at 4 years of age, was begging for death. My current phone, the 11 Pro, at 4 years of age is still kicking. The stagnation meant I don't need to upgrade to a newer phone any time soon and I fortunately see that being recognised among my peers.
I understand the US is very addicted to consumption, but that goes beyond iPhones or smartphones in general, so there are clearly two sides to this story.
