Honestly, that's the best thing you can do. Pick up one of the 15 r2's and boot from the nvme ssd slot. Many times faster than sata ssd's, simply due to the fact you have 256 pools of 256 read and writes at the same time, instead of the limit of 1 read or write at the same time from the traditional sata ssd's. Mines almost 5 years old now, and I struggle to justify upgrading. You can get insane specs for under $1000 with one of these.

This is one of the best reviews I've seen on LTT including the gem at 07:00 lmao. The backing music works beautifully and coupled with the animated desk gives this video such a nice atmosphere, the set gives me an upgraded Dave2D(Is that his name? I can't remember I got linus on my mind) vibe.
The new sets are wonderfully designed, I have no idea who Linus & Ivan are off camera, but when so many talented individuals gather around two people, one can see they are great people. I dunno why I love the vibe of this video so much. You guys are amazing to watch grow.
Jazz Oddly, I actually hate this review. Dave2D gave a very cautious recommendation to this laptop, due to the thermals and soldered RAM.

I'd love to see this covered again but for the M15 R5, the first Ryzen alienware laptop. Looks like an awesome laptop and rather good specs for even lower than that competitively specced version in the video.
I bought the rtx 3060 model. Absolutely love it, first time buying a amd system and I never go above 30% cpu usage

@@namelessfrce5842 I would! Unless there are more competitive prices out there for a 3070 or 3080 now. When I was looking a few months ago that's the best deal you'd find. Temps run hot as expected but there are power management options that make it manageable. On more demanding games like Hell Let Loose and Squad I get 60-70 frames generally.

Love alienware i bought a alienware 17 r4, i7 1070, and its been almost three years still works perfectly and the warranty is very good on these, i messed up my heat synk while opening it for thermal repaste, but i broke fhe motherboard and they replaced the whole motherboard!!😆

I tried telling my parents that I need this gaming laptop to help me write essays faster............They nearly pulled me out of school for asking this
Regarding the last part: they are assuming that everyone has a lot of space to fill with computers. My home only has room for a laptop so the alienware and a screen is the maximum I could afford to have space wise.
Also I don't want to have to synchronize all my data, I want to have everything with me and be able to do any task wherever I go. So the good desktop + decent laptop option does not do it for me.
And if you want the most gpu performance you can always just buy a thunderbolt or aga dock for around $100-200, slam a desktop GPU in there, and replace said GPU when needed, as CPU's tend to last longer

Don't worry about the soldered RAM issue.... I'm sure AW are working on the propriety AW Memory Amplifier but it will use the same port as the graphics amplifier so you'll have to choose which one to use.
Love the design of the display bezel. Such a nice machine, but oof that price. Soldered RAM is a bit of a let down, I'm sure they could have opted for regular swappable DIMM slots.

Once upon a time I owned the Alienware M17x R2 & R3. I found back then, running two video cards with the SLi would give rise to graphical stuttering. Although I found a single video card to work fine in the R3 model.
This family of gaming laptop has gotten a lot more affordable(sorta).
I was able to get the M17 R3 version, with the 2070 Super, 16GB Ram, i7 10750H, 300Hz monitor, with 1TB SSD storage. I also got the 5 year warranty. Was 2300$ for it all. It was on a special holiday sale mind you, but the thing is ridiculous. Playing Cyberpunk at those frame rates with everything on ultra is pretty remarkable stuff.
If you get this family of laptop though I HIGHLY suggest undervolting it the proper way and getting a cooling pad. I didn’t have any trouble keeping it cool but the thing does get warm. Especially with maxed out FPS and everything on ultra. It would reach 80° very quick but overall it has given me no problems, it is a blast to game on, it’s best piece of technology I’ve ever owned and exceeded my expectations.
I just bought my m15 r4 for about $2600 and got $80 back which I used to get a second HDD. I got the 32gig ram and the 4k OLED display with the RTX 3070 and 1TB storage. With the $80 I got a Samsung 970 Pro 512GB NVMe for booting from. I didnt see a reason to shell out for the i9 processor for another $400, this thing already gets warm enough to worry about having an unlocked and overclockable processor. If I open the fans to 100% my CPU rarely goes above 80c under heavy 4k ultra settings on games. If you let the system control the fan itself it will never spin them above 70%, even on "performance" setting, and then I run into heat issues. So far I couldn't be happier with this computer. Though within three days of getting it I had formatted it to stock Win10 and got rid of all their bloatware, sorry software I mean, except the Alienware Command Center since you need it to control LightFX and the fan settings.

Really want to see some benchmarks with the different GPU options. I'm skeptical of significant differences above the 2060.
I finally got a replacement after mine broke immediately after ordering it 2,5 months ago. It had been repaired twice, the ram was broken, it wouldn't charge and my sound didn't work.
Still have to return my old one, it was a real pain to get a new machine from Dell in the Netherlands. Now that I finally have a new one I'm really happy with it, finally the software is also up-to-date and no more weird glitches, everything feels solid.
I work in an IT company myself, so I do know what I'm doing with these machines, but the previous one from this same model I had I would not recommend. The one I have right now is amazing!

I like my Area 51m, it does pretty much everything I want it to. It's literally a desktop replacement that I can take with me.. in a big rolling pelican case lol. Only real con is that it's a product of dell and comes with their propriety software. If I could make one improvement it would be an OLED panel for the display. I've been spoiled by Samsung's phones and I love the contrast ratio on OLED.
How does this compare to the R3? That one is so heavy it seems, but would it be quieter/better performance? I know nothing about gaming laptops haha! But love the look and do video and music editing.

I just bought the m15 r4 that packs the RTX 3070 in it and new 8 core i7 for $1950. So it’s nice to see that the pricing can be chopped a bit at killer performance if you have the will to watch the market out a bit

Yep agreed, any laptop with none user replaceable RAM, or Storage is a no buy for me, as I've had systems where I've had them fail on me, and the entire system ends up as nothing more then a parts salvage.

I jave one of these 2 gen old as my main pc. When not toting to friends houses, I just use it on a laptop cooler mat at home. The cooling fans will thank you.
The double fans on a usb mat will barely make noise and keep your onboard fans from ever ramping up
My old ass Alienware laptop just died late last year and I was so sad to see it die, it stuck with me through so much and almost never gave me problems. Would love to pick this version up a year or two from now, since I just invested in my own first serious desktop. I love the design here, so much more slick looking than the previous types of older Alienware laptops like my old one.
So now they soldered the RAM in? I remember when I got my m15x back in 09' and they literally charged like $500 for the RAM upgrade option from slowest to best. I got it with base RAM and CPU options then upgraded them myself to the max RAM and CPU configuration and literally saved about $1000. I realized after spending roughly $2500 I could've bought a car instead. It was a unique gaming experience nonetheless. It also had the magnesium alloy chassis. It could run Unreal Tournament 3 (best looking game at the time) at max settings 1024×768 resolution at around 60 fps. It was capable of a resolution maximum of 1920×1200 which at the time was the highest you could get on a screen that small (15").

@@melodious2261 For a grand you can get a 1440p capable desktop computer, but also for a grand you can get a pretty good laptop that lets you work while you are traveling or just on the go in general. Not everyone sits in their room 24/7, some people need to have a fast device that makes the money, but also capable of bit of gaming when they are done with work.
I just can't stomach buying a laptop for gaming or video editing that only has 16GB of RAM and is not able to be upgraded.

as both a gamer and 3d renderer, its outright insane to buy a laptop with only 16 gigs of non-upgradeable ram.
besides that the r-15 m2 has very very poor CPU thermal performance making it even worse for rendering which is CPU intensive task.

To use at home and LAN with friends - if I need a pc while I'm out an about, I just use my phone.
My coworkers and I travel a lot. It seems everyone with older computers own Alienware. We beat these things up and theirs still work 5 years later. Everyone else has to replace theirs in a couple of years. After an MSI and a Sony died on me, I built a 7 liter form factor I carry everywhere. Year one down and no problems. My son still uses his Alienware lap top since he returned to college. It is 8 years old.

Would you recommend this or the Lenovo X1 Extreme gen 2 for work as a Data Scientist / Machine Learning Engineer? I won't to any gaming on it, but I will do tensorflow modeling which benefits greatly from GPU power.
I like thst the Lenovo is more serious-looking (I don't care at all about rbg lights everywhere, it's more a con than a pro for me) but it seems that the Alienware has a much more powerful GPU for the same price?
Also, how do they fare in terms of buld construction (my current laptop is 9 years old and still working "fine" even if the battery died some time ago)
And what about the keyboard? The ThinkPads are famous for their keyboard, but you said this one is very good also. Better than thinkpad, worse or just different?

5.5 hours? Was about to say don't kid yourself but then I remember I got the oled version. About 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours at best while surfing the web and watching some movies.
I got this laptop but had nothing but issues with it. It's sure as hell a powerhouse but it does also come with some cons that I found to be dealbreakers. First of all, the biggest flaw to me was the fans. Not only do they get extremely loud(high pitched whine, truly annoying for everyone around you and you if you don't put on some good headphones with high noise isolation), but mine were repeatedly defect. They had this kind of metallic/scraping noise, especially as you tilt it(and being someone who tilts it a lot of the time, that sucks). Had to call for repairs, but the new fan was defect and couldn't be plugged in, then we finally changed it and some other things went defect instead, like the rgb lighting and touchpad, then the noise came back every now and then despite the new fans. Got a completely new laptop shipped from china again to replace the unit, surprise surprise, the exact same fan noise issue was present. Oh so nice. Also, you have to undervolt this thing to get even decent temps. I'm NOT comfortable with 99c or more as soon as you do something remotely heavy. The 4k 3dmark tests had it running at roughly 95-99c all the time. When you gamed on it, the wsad keys was incredibly uncomfortable, you literally felt them burning your fingers if you press them down for anything more than one second. I really don't buy that the gpu was kept really cool in this review, no matter which unit, no matter how I applied new thermal paste etc, the stock temps on the gpu AND cpu were both above 90C. Idle temps around 50-70C. Only by undervolting, ramping up the fans to 100% and using a cooling pad would the temps become quite good.
Then the coil whine... The incessant f*cking coil whine. It almost drove me crazy. Constant, neverending, always present no matter the load. I think it's partly because it's open on top so the sound gets free travel as the comb intakes at the top sits right above the cpu/gpu.
Seriously, while it's a good laptop and the oled is gorgeous, I just couldn't tolerate such obnoxious flaws. Repairs after repairs and nothing got fixed. Also, the tobii eye tracking is a waste of space and money, it slowed down my mouse and kept on ramping up my CPU even while idle so the temps got even higher than necessary. Ended up completely uninstalling and deleting the device from my laptop, until it had nothing to go on and couldn't re-install drivers all the time. Just turning it off didn't help as it had a habit of turning itself on again. I also felt like 16GB RAM isn't enough. Nowadays we need 32GB to multitask properly, 16GB, while sufficient, is not enough to freely open everything you want to use and have lots of tabs etc and game at the same time or do things like content creation.
I have to agree on the keyboard though. Absolutely, hands down, one of the best keyboards I've ever had the pleasure of using. So, so good. It's also a real looker that isn't game-like enough to be ashamed of when sitting down somewhere. Truly portable.
If the m15r2 didn't have these issues, I would've kept it. I kinda wished for a m17r2 with an oled screen and 32gb ram, but that doesn't exist.
So, a xps 15" it is. Not a game machine but can handle pretty much all titles if you tweak the settings. It's not as if I'm a true gamer anymore, I rarely play anything much and if I do, I'd buy a desktop instead. The undervolted XPS 15" is the best option for me. Let's hope it won't come with fan issues or anything else -.- Software flaws should be fixed by now after so many months. The xps 15" is also cheaper, albeit not by that much. Planning to save up for a desktop later, which will be cheaper. But I probably need 1500$ more at least, I have all the peripherals already, except for a screen.
