Here's what the response time numbers at 1:50 mean: jarrods.tech/how-i-test-laptop-screen-response-time/ this will be featured in future laptop reviews so it will be useful to get familiar with it!
Great review as always, I returned my R2, the thermals are awful, and the track pad was rubbish with lag, beautiful looking laptop though and a great keyboard, keyboard was red hot on WASD keys which makes it useless for gaming, I just dont understand how the thermals are so so bad, when it has massive vents, and is big dimensions relative to the MAG 15 which I switched to, which is a fantastic laptop
Can you do a review on alianweare m15 r3 2020
Your review is the best bit booring but best detailed review ever good job brother
REVIEW THE ACER SWIFT 3 with the ryzen 7
Gerry why not keep it and buy a cooling pad. I bought one it’s great 👍
My wallet: Did you buy it?
Me: Yes.
Wallet: What did it cost?
Me: Everything.
🙃
Wouldnt your wallet know how much you spent already?
Cost me 1500$ I'm happy with it.
An exceptional review - thanks a lot for such a systematic, detail-oriented and thorough review - mentioning to which adapter the TB3 port is connected is a shining example. Also, props for upgrading the equipment, the display tests are really great. Keep up the excellent work and looking forward to your continued growth!
Thanks Leo!
9:35 that was a legit take-off
Shame it’s still buggy considering it’s been out for awhile. I always felt like Alienware should be setting standards rather than teaching companies on what not to do.
Yeah, I thought it would be better compared to my last experience which was about a year ago, maybe a little, but still some big problems that shouldn't exist.
Alienware has been on the lower scale of refinement for a while now.
Alienware's part of Dell, so that explains it
99.99% of people are just not going to notice the issues.
bighand69 People will notice the broken trackpad; and if the RAM or Wi-Fi card goes, they will notice that they have to send the entire motherboard in for a lot of money!
Its like the saying : " I've won but at what cost?"
It do be like that
Like I can't afford any food anymore 😂
@@motis419 uh.. it costs a lot more than that though
Although it's a lengthy review.. I loved it! You report on ALL the possible testing specs (response time, colour accuracy, rame rates- real world, fan noise, thermal throttling in real world use, heat on surfaces)
Thanks, yeah takes a long time to get all the info out, though I am working on a second channel where I do shorter more summarised reviews called 'jarrod's laptops'.
Love how comprehensive your reviews are! Please keep doing what you're doing :)
Thanks, will do!

Nice , proper review as usual! I'm not going to go for a alienware and now i know why .
Hi Jarrod!
Are you going to review the new razer laptops (2020)?
It would be great if you could tell us differences between the old and the new models!
When are you going to review the Zephyrus M15? I’m so excited for that one, have been hearing good stuff!
same here
Me too
Zephyrus m15 isnt available here in Australia i think...
"I found the hinge sturdy enough thuurrr" 3:00
Hey jarred how were you able to undervolt the cpu after the bios update of 1.6 it doesn’t allow for undervolting using throttle stop ???
that screen response time test is great👍🏻any chance you will get your hands on the Aorus 15G?
Dude, r2 is history now, we have the EPIC r3. U were 1 year late :D
Will the r4 be a redesign? I don't mind either way just wondering
If you already have an R2 then there probably is no advantage to upgrading for new buyers they could use the R2 as a guide to getting the R3.
We have an R2 in our house and I have seen the R3 and it is not that much of a step up for many games.
hopefully there is a r4 with flip motherboard and both ram and wlan upgradeble (and yes, maybe 5000 amd chip would be great). until alienware thin and light gaming laptop has positive review, i would consider one as well.
MonEcctro it looks pretty good, the thermals are much better and the case is metal instead of like soft material
MonEcctro The thermals are still pretty bad though and you’ll need a lot of tinkering with the settings and repasting before you get it to acceptable temps
Awesome review as always!
Hope you get those new XPS' and the m15r3 soon to review! 😁
Dude! Great fan of yours here!
I just got a little question in my mind.
I have the Asus TUF FX505 gaming laptop. I bought it 4 months ago. I started playing AAA games like witcher 3, Modern Warfare and some other competitive titles to.
My laptop temps seem little unconvincing. Idle temps on the CPU are 45-50°C ( I live in India) and while gaming it maxes out at around 95°C .
I've been using a software Ryzen Controller to limit temps to 85° but it seems to hinder performance.
Are these temps bad for my laptop's health?
Should I be playing games for like 3 hours like this?
Or should I reapply thermal paste as per my current situation?
Would like to get a reply soon.
Thanks.
The m15 R3 is nearly at release, isn't it a bit late for the r2 review?
Great review! I’m trying to decide between this (the new R3 model though) and the MSI GE66 Raider.
Would be great if you could do a review of the MSI GE66 Raider next. Would love to see how the RTX 2070 Super non max q present on the GE66 (and the new Alienware m15 R3) performs, if it’s the same as 2080 super max q then it’s very good value for ~2100 USD.
Super JLK there aren’t any official reviews yet on the RTX 2070 Super but the leaked performance given on notebookcheck shows the RTX 2070 Super to be ~15% better than the normal one, and also a bit better than the RTX 2080 Super MaxQ on the GS66 (but the GS66 is not a great comparison as it’s in a different weight class).
I have a suggestion, for the display test you should also give average deltaE value alongside color gamut, as it determines display color accuracy.
i love how ur background is
pleasing to eyes 🥱
Hi Jarrod, I was wondering if you are going to be reviewing the new dell XPS 15 2020 soon? I am debating between getting the older or newer version and one of your reviews would be really helpful
No ETA, I am apparently on a waiting list but no idea when the review unit is available for me in my country.
Great looking laptop. Passed on it cos of the overheating issues people complained about in forums. Got the triton 500 instead.
Uff man you are the best
Would you recommend some of gaming laptops for engineering work or i is it better to get a workstation? I am still a student and a workstation are way more expensive. I was thinking in the MSI prestige 15, but maybe there is another which is better. I appreciate any response . Thank you for this great information!
Another great video dude! Can't wait for your review for aorus 15g and the new legion 7
Thanks, hopefully both in June 🤞
Jarrod'sTech do they actually sponsor ur chanel giving u the laptops or you just keep them for a while🥺 or you actually buy them 😧literally this is the best laptop Chanel and is the reason I bought a razer blade 17” 240hz ,2080qmax❤️
Any estimate or word on obtaining an R3? Also what are your thoughts on the Area 51M R2, do you plan on getting one of those?
I’ve had the m15 r2 for a month now and love it! I got this exact spec for a very good deal. Id deffo recommend
Got mine last February and I'm loving it. I'm really satisfied.
That's good to hear
Hi Jarrod, if you're reading this, please do a review on the updated Aftershock Forge models (15S/15X/15R)! I would love to hear your review on them!
I have seen the R2 i7/2070 config occasionally dip down as much as USD1400 in the last couple of months. Do you think it'd be worth it at that price point? Really wish they had a 10th gen i5 config in R3 since it supports multithreading now. Also wondering if R3 will have improved thermals. Wishful thinking.
I ordered a M15 R3 with the 10750 and 2070 Super plus 300hz screen. It was well specced for the price compared to other laptops I was looking at (ie you get full power super gpu on the R3, not max q for example) I think only the Strx Scar 15 and MSI Raider Ge66 are giving you that in a 15 and their 300hz models were a few hundred more
Hey jarrod
Do you still have the legion Y540?
If yes could you please test it's screen response time?
I want to buy one based on your review(it was great btw )
So just curious about response time
Thanks..!!
Hopefully you can review the R3 soon with full power graphics...
The response time test is aesome. We can finally find out if manufacturers really use 'gaming' grade screens.
those reviews are just almost perfect
Hey Jarrod, the SotTR benchmark you run it with the "Highest" settings and whatever comes by default? Or also crank up all individual settings?.
I just got my Asus Zephy GX531GX with 9750h+2080mq and I got 107fps average between 5 runs with default "Highest" settings and TAA.
I'm surprised as your GX701 test got low 90's. How can this be?
I know because of any future work or sponsors it may be controversial but could you do a statistically/ bang for the buck top 10 gaming laptops of 2020 thus far? Probably around July or August in order to give the up coming releases time to be reviewed?
Hello jarrod.
i'm waiting for you to review gigabyte 15 oled 2020 model, because your laptop review is the most comprehensive and informative !
Me too, hopefully they are able to lend me it, they were not happy with my Aero 17 review so maybe they won't 😛
Hey Jarrod, I have Alienware m17 R2, and my battery drains very fast even in normal use. Maximum I get is 2 hours. Sometimes it drains even faster. Is there any settings I can change to fix this? My specs is rtx 2070 max q, i9 9880H, 16gb ram, 2tb ssd.
On the topic of Alienware and Dell, I'm so excited cause of the new Dell G5 Se. It's just full AMD and has a really nice glittery silver colour to it. Definite next buy for me unless I keep looking at your channel for more laptop reviews lol.
I’ve been excited for this review!
Glad you're able to get display response time data now!!! Do you plan to go back and test previous laptops?
Unfortunately I can't in most cases, I doubt any company is going to want to foot the bill on return shipping me a laptop just so I can get that, sorry.
@@JarrodsTech ah OK I thought you might have laptops lying around rather than loaned samples. Would've been great for posterity. Anyway, glad to see you can do it now unlike much larger techtubers that just use their eyes!
Could you also compare this to the new acer? When it comes out? Your reviews are the absolute best!
Jarrod. Try uninstalling anything from Rivett and Killer then try downloading the Dell updates again. That should fix it.
Hey Jarrod, I know you haven't reviewed any 2020 razer laptops yet but based on previous reviews would you choose the blade 15 2070 super or the blade 17 2070?
Personally for me and how I travel, 17" is automatically disqualified. If you don't travel much or can take the extra size and need the bigger screen where ever you're taking it, it will perform better.
Will you be doing MSI bravo 15 when it is out?
Justo me esta llegando esta notebook en negro en estos días, parece increíble.
Si se pudiera mejorar la ram sería la notebook perfecta.
Do you get DELL G5 15 SE Review unit? Can't wait for this All-AMD Laptop :D
agreed.
Hey Jarrod great video.
But I would like to ask you a favour.
In one of your older video you did thermal testing on Acer predator Helios 300 with i7 9750h and 1660ti.
You undervolted the cpu to -0.170 volts, I too have the exact same device but I was not able to undervolt it so far ( using Intel xtu )
Just was able to get it to -0.150 volts below which the laptop would freeze.
If you don't mind can you please guide me through this undervolting process as I don't have any experience with same.
PS : I am looking to undervolt my device because I am getting quite high temperatures (around 90-93°C) while Playing some AAA titles.
Yeah bro
Also the predator sense software probably overwrites the undervolt once pressed and sets itself to original -0.125 volts
Did you try throttlestop ?
@@Adam-ch7fb throttlestop is probably not able to control tdp
Dont know haven't tried it yet(saw a youtube video once)😅
Only Jarrod can help you bro
Dont mess with your beast without expert advice
Have a nice day 😊
@@siddharthbhosale8222 humm interesting
Are you sure
This laptop hitting the 90+ C mark at 4 GHz maybe tells me that the thermal paste is not great. The 8950HK in my 17R5 is able to maintain that clock speed while being much cooler due to the repaste I did some time ago with Kryonaut. I’ve been able to also get it to 4.5 GHz on all cores, but depending on the workload it hits PROCHOT at 97 C and throttles down about 400 MHz, and the clock speed that seems the most comfortable is ~4.2 GHz on all cores and it sometimes gets into the 90 C range but stays mostly around the mid-to-high 80s with a .160 to .165 mV undervolt on the core and cache.
I bring this up because a repaste with some higher quality thermal paste (like Kryonaut) will definitely bring the m15R2 laptop down into the low-to-mid 80 C range on the 9750H with the performance profile enabled and allow it to stay at the 4 GHz all-core turbo and the cooling fan will help bring it lower as well.
I look forward to see R3 review .. also the new Asus 15 then choose thanks
I just watched Dog in Space. With michael hutchence before he done the choker fist of fury. He would approve of the Alienware
I almost read that as michael vic man i need some sleep
Woof ,tally is here
Woof!
lol
Tally Ho Tech No he wouldn’t.
Im trying to figure out the difference between fps and hz on the monitor. Why cap at 60hz if you can see more than 60 fps. R1 and r3 can be customized more than 60hz
Markus Mitchell I agree; try the MSI GS66, ASUS Zephyrus G14, Acer Predator Series, or Lenovo Legion Series. Even the Razer Blade 15 and Pro 17 are better value for your money and can be upgraded after purchase!
And here I just saw the product release vid of the r3.
Come on Microsoft did a fantastic job on the 1080p webcam and mic... please, make the webcam better like Microsoft did
Any words about the Acer Nitro 5 2020 version? Also great review!
For some reason in this video your copy of R2 doesn't have backlit on the spacebar. Is it just your laptop, or all R2s are like this?
Any updates on Lenovo 5i or 7i? When will you get them
Lenovo told me June availability for Australia, that's all I know.
5i, 5Pi and 5 are now available in China, most review I watched said they are mostly the same as previous models.
edit: except the obvious parts like webcam placement and keyboard. I was talking about stuff like thermals and performance (performance is slightly better as expected from a newer generation).

Awesome review as always. Also any info about ASUS TUF A15 yet? It seems like the new 4800H still bottlenecks 1660ti on low settings on the A15.
Thanks, yes should arrive in 2 days 👌
@@JarrodsTech Awesome. Can you please give more preference to comparing low settings on games? As far as I have seen, frame rate at low settings is still terrible with the new 4800H just like the previous Ryzen laptops. The 4800H seems bad for gaming. Would really appreciate it!
@@JarrodsTech I would send you my a15 to review once I got it if you need the extra data.

@@Walkdthock I got the i9,2080, and 300hz display. Runs great, temps are ok. I can over clock it to 5.1 with great reliability. No issues with the scrolling and no yellowing.
Hi! I got my aw m17 r3 yesterday. I am very satisfied with its performace. I was planning to return it and get gs66 stealth but after I ran some tests and played it, it was spectacular. The build was just so balanced that the highest temps I got was between 60-67c on idle I only get 47-55c and I couldnt ask for more. The screen is so much better even though it only has 1080p 144hz gsync than my 2017 aw 17 r4 that has 1440p 120hz gsync. I intentionakky opted for 1660ti because the 2060 and 2070mq only has very minimal difference in performance. I was able to save money and got the best thermals I could ever ask for.
