My little brother worked at Long John Silvers! I remember he had no money to buy Christmas gifts for me. I got the best present from him that year. It was four glass small plates with Holly. They gave them away for promotions👍. Still to this day I have them ☺️
That’s really cool ! And says a lot about you that you hold them close to you. I lost my little brother to a. Accident a few years ago and EVERYTHING, small or big I got from him I hold close …..
@@InFltSvc So sorry for your loss! He is now an angel on your shoulder!
That's cool AF
@@InFltSvc life isn't there man that's devastating, my heart goes out to him and you and your family for that loss whatever that may have been that took his life too short
It's the little things that matter...
😉
I like long john silvers because it is one of the few places you can get a fast food style dinner (in other words, not a sandwich). Wish there were more still around.
"...you never know when Long John Silvers will be forced to walk the plank!!" LOL! Thanks for making my day Sailor! 😀
The Long Johns Silver in my town closed about 5 years ago, sad to see the deteriorating building just sitting there. I loved getting dinner from here as a kid in the 70’s, always got a chicken plank dinner. Hope they can survive.
Loved loved the chicken planks!👍🏼
Yes ours closed maybe 7 years ago so did the KFCnext door. Pissed me off we will never get another franchise restaurant in our county wehavemsybr 50 thousand I county. Mall is shit. Only Walmart and sfew restaurants by mall. Mcd. Taco bell. Arby's. Tore down BK years ago. Have an Arby's, Subway. Pizza hit which has gotten bad. Wendy's soggy burgers, a Bob Evans, an Eatn park a Pittsburgh based restaurant not all that. King restaurant. A couple nasty Chinese tests. A Italian rest but got bad when lazy son took over from father. That's about it guys.itsucks.oh yah a BK is bad.
Item the YUM Brands. Called my bank to ask what a yum brand was on my statement.
I figured it out. It was ljs or KFC. Mustabeen before Google got big cause customer service rep said we always wandered what YUM Brands was. Lol. We need sit-down steak house, chic fil a, a Popeyes, a LJS, KFC, maybe add a good sandwich shop like the one Actor Brad Garrett advertised, I would welcome a Dominoes. Had one25 years ago. Shit down but Dominoes has gotten real cardboard u tasting
Lol. Only wal mart or another franchise grocery store. And Aldi's. No place to shop anymore. Our Walmart is ghettoashell. Always having police there forsholifters or drunk pple in store. Or no food on shelves. Never have the chibatta bread. One dayno frozen spinach. Then no roasts, no chicken
I'll scarce. They say we going back food chain drama again. Ugh.
@@CharlesWhite-wh4cc I've never been to a Bob Evans restaurant they aren't out in the west, same with White Castle. Bob used to visit my dad often at our house when we lived back east. He was a coin collector and bought pieces from my dad now and then. He was not a nice man at all. He was rude to my mom and the kids, actually to my dad, too.
Long John Silvers in Round Rock TX is alive and kicking and even has an all you can eat on Sundays.
@@augustinevela9892 I’m moving to Round Rock!🥰
They give a senior discount, crabcakes on Fridays are $1 and my elderly dad loves Long John Silvers. I go there for him on Fridays. Thanks for this history. Long John Silvers is part of my life because of my dad.
Good for you and your dad!
Lettuce Carrots - this brought tears to my eyes. Thank you. My dad would love your kind gesture of loads of Long John Silver’s crabcakes. He’d get a kick out of that! We hope to meet your dad and you in Heaven one day. What a day, what a day that will be. Blessings to you
Family outings on Fridays, my heavenly sister's favorite place. The sailor hat, malted vinegar, and bell to ring for satisfied customers. Memories.
Augustine - Thanks so much for sharing your family memory .. a bell to ring .. such pleasant, unforgettable times! Thanks
As a child, I always made fun of the discount. The joke was that their customers would never live long enough to claim the benefit. I absolutely LOVED their fish, but knew that it wasn’t very healthy, and would always have a stack of napkins to soak up all the grease. I would eat at LJS almost weekly with my dad in the years leading up to that 55 age group. He managed to survive to be 57, debunking my theory. ...so I was 2 years off.
We went to LJS when we wanted to go fancier than dine-in Pizza Hut. Loved their crumblies floating in malt vinegar, paper pirate hats, and their mad nautical ambience. Ding!
Ours doesn't give the crispy batter pieces anymore. I loved those. I pour that delicious malt vinegar on everything and scoop it up with a spoon.
Those batter crispies are called “scrumps.”
Hush puppies in malt vinegar yum..
When I was in medical school in Lexington in the late 1980s, my apartment was a few miles away from the original location. I loved the chicken planks and still do. An occasional meal at the original LJS was a nice treat on a medical student’s budget.
I take it, you're not a cardiologist. Lol
That’s the thing- the chicken is the best too! Hard to pass that up but I go for the fish! Lol!
My mother went to UK in the early 80s and we lived in Lex for several years as she finished up and got her degree in Dentistry. I still love Lex and visit as often as I can!
For many years some friends and I went camping every summer in Michigan and we'd stop by the same Long John Silvers every year on the way to fill up our bellies because it would be late before we were set up and ready to make something to eat. It became a tradition to ring the bell on the way out, I'm sure the sight of 6 or 7 adult guys in a row enthusiastically ringing the bell on our way out the door was an odd sight to some.
I recently went back to my hometown, I was actually expecting the LJS to be closed like so many. I was pleasantly surprised to see it not only still in business, but the building had been nicely remodeled on the outside. Seeing the photos of the restaurant in the 70's reminded me of eating in that one when I was a kid. My brother and I would always ask for "extra crumbs". Which looking back on it, probably wasn't the healthiest thing, since it was nothing but the extra fried bits of batter!
Extra crumbs me too
My best friend, got to eat at all the fast food restaurants in town. His parents were young and cool, and he was spoiled. Now this is during the 70's - eating out was not too common for most families. He always brought souvenirs from his outings to school. Long John Silver's had these neat plastic, fork-like, utensils, that possessed pirates names and faces on them. He had a growing collection and I was jealous! I remember he gave me a few. Up until my mother passed in 2018, they were still in her utensils drawer! Anyone else remember those forks?
I remember going with my Dad. He got fish and I got chicken planks. The slaw, hush puppies, and fries were all good.
I would go here with my Dad. Hush Puppies and fried clams were my favorite. Such wonderful memories. 🥰
We were a Captain D's family; same idea though - good food. Burgers get old IMO
Those fried clams and hush puppies were to die for! I’m drooling just thinking about them now.
My grandma's favorite place love you grandma
We had one in my small town up until a few years back. It opened up in the 80s and it still looked the same, the day it closed.
I miss the old interiors of the Long John Silvers and those paper hats too! My uncle used to work at one in the ‘80s. Fun times!
I STILL Have a bottle of that Malt Vinegar in the back of one of my cabinets. It will keep forever.
Miss a good fish and chips place !!!
That last shot of a closed LJS is about 3 miles from my house...
You are so lucky!
3 piece w chips , slaw and a ton of the extra “crunchies” on the side. Flooded with malt vinegar of course!
The crunchies are delicious omgggg i just said that
the crunches and vinegar are hypnotic. The LJS by me doesn't serve crunchies now, but the fish and malt vinegar are still delicious.
@@eckankar7756 captain D’s serves the crunchies still just ask them for an order of cracklings and they will put a lot of them in a basket for free. I eat them with sweet and sour sauce
@@stephensandiford3981 I've never heard of a Captain D's. Only LJS where i live.
@@eckankar7756 I live in South East Georgia not far from the Florida line might be more of a Southern restaurant not sure
I worked at a Long John Silvers in Kalamazoo Michigan when I was a teen. It was a good job and it always amazed me that people wanted extra crumblies, the fried batter leftovers! I still love the hush puppies!
I used to work for Long John's when I was a teen. It was interesting to say the least. But I was mostly amazed how many women I got to know!
And the best part is the diversity of women! Great times back then!
So many women because grilled fish is great when trying to keep your weight under control. And if they weren’t eating grilled fish they were kidding themselves into believing that fried fish was ok to eat also.
Still have one near me. They are okay, but I still miss Arthur Treachers Fish and Chips - they were by far the best in the heyday of fish and chips restaurants.
You are right! I sorely miss Arthur Treacher’s!
Arthur Treachers Fish and chips was a good place to eat in the early 70's. We laughingly called them "Awfully Treacherous" but in reality, was delicious fried fish. All gone now.
Back in the 1970s in Houston, we used to have "Alfie's Fish & Chips," and you could smell the vinegar and cooking oil the minute you walked in! Until LJS opened its first shop, Alfie's was my favorite fish-n-chips place.
Alfies was great!
Had one in Mankato MN till couple years ago. It was an old school one
We still have a Long John silver's where I live. The food is actually pretty good. Also thank you for making these great videos. Your videos show how much time and love you put into them.
Round here, it depends on the location, the A&W/ Long Johns sucks. But, the stand alone Long Johns does very well. I guess the 3 or 4 employees at the A&W/Long Johns are just overwhelmed or confused.
Thank you for reminding me we have one with a A&W/ Long John silver's. I never go to that one. I might have to stop by there soon. I'm in New Mexico
I remember my first ever trip to the big city, and one of the reasons I remember it is because we went to Long John Silvers. Growing up as I did in a town so small that we didn't have any franchise businesses except Winn Dixie and Tastee Freeze, I was thrilled to go to LJS because of the pirate books I had read, but also because I thought it sounded like something from England and I had read books like The Secret Garden and several Charles Dickins books as well. The smell of fried fish assailed my senses when I entered the store. I was hooked. The love affair did not last long since in the same store there was an Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips, and and they had one thing LJS did not. MALT vinegar. That was so English I just fell in love.
Best fish and chips .... Ever! 🤩 thank you RR! 😊
Haven't had any for a long time.. but the memories will never go away. Closest one around here is 60 miles away!
We still have one of the original classic style LJS's in Gallup, New Mexico along route 66.
My parents always took us to long johns as children in the 70's.!!!! I still eat there whenever I can, good fish and chips!!!!
The LJS in my hometown just closed about a month ago. It's been there for as long as I can remember, which is 40+ years now. Sad to see it go away. Always loved it, such great memories there. Thank you for the information.
I miss Long John. All of ours in Huntsville, AL are gone. The old buildings are now Title Max.
I liked the fish planks, slaw and pups. Never had them until we moved to the south. My husband was stationed at Ft. Campbell, KY and we were finally somewhere that had LJS. When my son got older my husband’s aunt and uncle would take him there for lunch and all he wanted was the little fried batter sprinkle things. They had to get extra for him but when you’re spoiling your great nephew nothing is too big or small.
LJS is still one of my favorite fast food places. Love the battered fish and hush puppies.
Loved Long John Silver's. Appreciate the memories of eating there with my Grandmother, too.
We had one of these in the Schaumburg/Hanover Park Illinois area, and I loved that place. In the last few years it closed for good. So sorry to see it go.
I loved the LJS in Dayton, OH in the 70's & 80's! Our family went there every couple of weeks, and each of us had our own favourite dishes. I was thrilled to find a location in Phoenix, AZ last year (2021), and really hope they're still there!
I have fond memories of going to Long John Silvers as a kid with my paternal grand parents. My grandmother loved the Hush Puppies.
A LJS was built in our neighborhood outside Houston in 1975 and looked like the restaurant in the video. It was good food when it opened.
My Dad once owned a franchise restaurant named the Shrimp boat , it was a trailer surrounded by a facade that looked like a boat . The franchise never took off like l
Long Johns Silvers, or Captain D'S
I love your dads idea!!!! 🏆
I grew up in Athens Ga. There was a Shrimp Boat there near the UGA campus! Loved it!
@@sherryk7555 There is one still left in Rome Ga

In the 70's this was a must for us here in Louisville, KY. I MISS those orginal "Peg Legs."
Loved the food, good fish, great cole slaw.
I hope they stay around. I always liked them.
I miss the late 70's and early80's evry thing was just better. I rem goin to LJS with my parents in those times.
Wow you brought back alot of memories of our family eating here. Thanks for sharin

Fantastic fish. The food and drink episodes are my favorites.
Enjoyed an L1 meal a couple hours ago! Great fish! Awesome french fries! And Hush puppies!!!! Very good food indeed!
There's still one here in Williamsport, PA!!

I always appreciated ringing the bell which expressed my satisfaction with my meal.
Fish and chip chains ALWAYS remind me of Judge Reinhold in Fast Times

I worked at LJS in 1980, I still eat there today. The Pups are the best!
I had my 1st real job at LJS. I really love the food. I miss the theme it had back then. Plus the menu was better then too. I really hope they can paddle up stream and make through the storm!
I remember when going to LJS was something special. It has since fallen hard. My wife and I visited a LJS a few months ago. We both looked at each other and said, “This is not food, just Batter & Grease”😊
Being from Kentucky, I was familiar with LJS and Jerrys. I followed their stock in the mid 70’s. It was rising steadily. Shoneys, which was based in Tennessee and a similar model, had Captain D’s and I saw it as a competition between Ky and Tn. Unfortunately Capt D’s/Shoney’s survived but Jerrico did not.
I really miss LJS! Loved their food! (Last one was in Norfolk VA.)
Omg tons of bad fish puns!

I liked their food and loved the coleslaw. There aren't any stores around me any longer...the closest one closed about 4 years ago. I would love to see another store open again in my area.
I always loved this place , still got one just outside of my local Mall !

Our city of Gastonia NC doesn't have a long John silver's. We have Captain D's instead. I used to live in Newport TN they had a Long John Silvers, I ate there quite often. I loved the 2 piece fish chips & more dinners.
I was never a seafood eater, but I loved their chicken and chips platter. My Mom took us there all the time.
I love Long John Silver's I make it a point to try and eat at one if I find one there's not too many around here where I live

Back in 1975 we had a long John silvers and a captain Ds … I pretty sure long John silvers was first , anyhow I was addicted to LJS and walked up to get my fix like an addict at least 3 times a week…. So bad I applied for a job there but low and behold I was too young (14)
I consider these years the best time of my life! Wish I was close to one today! Pretty sure I was 2 football fields away when I walked there back in the day. Aww such sweet memories
I went to work for LJS in Dallas back in 1975 when I was a junior in High School. When I graduated High School, I went in the Army. When I got out, I went back to LJS in management. I always loved it. All total I worked for them in many locations over a span of about 7 years. Houston, Dallas, Oklahoma....Arkansas...
I will agree, they are just not the same anymore. For several reasons.
Our LJS is still open - Knoxville, Tennessee. Parking lot always full (at meal times)
When I was younger, LJS
was our Friday meal in Louisville, KY. In the 80’s.
I LOVE A&W &LONG JOHN SIVERS!
My dad would take me to Long John Silver’s on the weekend. I would order the #1 Shrimp Platter (8 shrimp, 2 fish, fries, hush puppies, slaw). I would ask for the extra crispy things too.
Once I got the food, I would dose everything in pepper and that “Louisiana Chef” hot sauce. To this day, I swear that was some of the best food I had in my life.
I worked for Jericho Corp. The corporate office was on the corner of Nichlosville and Southland Dr. In Lexington Ky.
I was there when they opened their new Corporate Office off Tates Creek Road in Lexington, KY.
I loved my job.
I loved their fish.
When I went home to NorCal, I would take my mom to LJS it was such a treat for her.
I have nice memories of my parent's taking my brother, sister and myself to Long John Silver's when we were kids. It was always a treat for us. There isn't one by us anymore, and I miss it..
I know right
Hope you are having a blessed day there??
I remember in Nashville BEFORE the Shoney’s chains like Captain D’s opened there was this great place on Nolensville rd. Called H.R.Fish And Chips. They had the biggest pieces of fish you’ve ever seen and delicious batter chips served with them. Served in a replica news paper wrap and represented British Fish And Chips. They were the best. Then they got bought out by smaller multi-chains like Captain D’s, or Long John Silver and the fish size went away along with the fierce competition they would have been if they were allowed to continue.
I'll never forget the time I went to a LJS restaurant and discovered the fillets had been reduced by half....
I'm lucky, the LJS of my childhood is still there, the next town over, and still has the nautical feel, and the captain's bell. We go a few times a year to get good fish and the hushpuppies. My sister always prefers the chicken planks.
Long John Silver's was, at one time, the best 'fish & chips' restaurant in Maryland & DC. I lived in Md & worked in DC & ate at both regularly!
There are several closed/abandoned Long John Silver restaurants around the country. I have one in abandoned in Virginia and another that owner remodeled reopened earlier this year
There was one in Staunton it caught fire and never reopened.
Oh! I remember Long John Silver! There’s also an excellent show which was adapted from the book “Black Sails” that features him.
They had the best hush puppies back in the 80’s
Worked here in Highschool '86-'88. I miss the pecan and lemon merengue pie!!! I also miss the shortening we used to fry in, as opposed to whatever they are using today as it leaves a film in your mouth. I also DO NOT miss the 2nd and 3d degree burns!!! Still have the scars 30+ years later!!!
What a nice trip through nostalgia, thank you. My father worked at a Jerry’s restaurant in Hazard, KY when he was in high school, and it remained open through my childhood. We would go to the drive in stalls and just order fries but I can also remember them having awesome hot fudge cake too! I recall going to the Long John’s also in Hazard as a child and it was one of the original Cape Cod style buildings, but I remember the food being really good and of great quality. It’s too bad that that style went out of popularity as I thought it was way more “authentic” than the refresh.
I miss Long John Silvers here in the DC area!
Back in the day, I ate at Long John's Silvers and the food was very good. But, I liked Arthur Treachers the best. I live in the Detroit, Michigan area. There are only 2 Long John's Silvers left in the Detroit area. They are located on East 8 Mile Road just west of Ryan Road on the Warren/Detroit City Limits. And on Gratiot and Gunston in the Detroit City Limits. Right across the street from the Detroit Police Station, 9th Precinct.
We had an Arthur Treacher's Fish & Chips in the Northeast Mall food court in Hurst, Texas. This was in the 90s before the mall reno and expansion. I remember they were good. Definitely better than LJS.
I lived the the mobile home park that is behind the the one in warren where they made the Eminem movie but that was back in the nineties both myself and my wife both worked at one in California in costa mesa we ended moving here for family and work but we ate at e the one in warren all the time when we lived there great food and memories
Love this place!!
Ours closed but opened close by with Taco Bell. I love their fish. It's a lot more thin now but the flavor still the same as I remember in the 1970s. The hushpuppies have less onion in them and used to get a scoop of the fried batter bits in the meal that they don't serve now. I still love that malt vinegar, I pour it over everything.
Your videos are the best. They take me back to a better time. Excellent escapism from the insanity of today’’s world.
I've always loved L.J.S.'s.
We still have a LJS in Gallup New Mexico .. go there everyday
I frequent my local LJS every few months. Out of the majority of fast food joint, they are the most unique as far as flavor goes.
I remember going to Long John Silvers a few times when we went to Orlando. Didn’t have one near me.
I miss the old days of LJS
Your videos are so great that you would make cardboard taste good.🖋️
Our family would go there on Sundays after church in the late 70's.We had the old style store with the "peir" out front. Every child got a paper hat .I remember the malt vinegar on the table and wondering why anyone would want that. It smelled bad. I would get the chicken with extra "crispies", and a root beer. It was a special occasion if I got the corn on the cob, drowning in butter.
Their corn on the cob was the BEST! So were their hushpuppies.
Wow. 1000 shops is a lot!!! I remember them!
This is cute my husband and I are watching right now
