My mom always shared a childhood memory of hers about going to a Krispy Kreme in Raleigh NC.
She said they only went once a year after harvest time.
At that time the trip to Raleigh from Goldsboro was a all day event with a picnic along the way.
The roads were mostly dirt until you got closer to Raleigh.
But, she said those were the best doughnuts she had ever had!
So, our family has a special place in our hearts for Krispy Kreme!!!!

I'll give Krispy Kreme their due as far as chain doughnuts go. IMO they're better than Dunkin and Tim Hortons. But for me, the best doughnuts always came from small local bakeries. I used to deliver the morning paper when I was I a kid and I picked up my papers at 5 AM right around the corner from a bakery. The smell coming from the place was enticing so one morning I knocked on the door and struck up a deal with the owner, one daily paper for one éclair. I would finish my morning éclair by the time I got to my first street. It was so good. I also used to like getting doughnuts hot out of the fryer at the cider mill in the fall. Nothing like enjoying the changing colors with a hot doughnut and a cold cup of cider. Good old days.

I totally agree. Dunkin is horrible for donuts but good at everything else they make. Krispy Kreme just tastes like puffed sugar to me. I had my first Krispy Kreme donut in 1994 and have probably had a few dozen over the years since then, but not for quite awhile. If you're going to eat a Krispy Kreme donut, at least get it when it's right off the line because they are not worth eating when luke warm or cold.

@@cdfreester I must laugh a little - 1994. Either you are a young squirt or had a sheltered life. I ate my 1st Krispy Kreme when I was 3. They opened in Wilmington, NC. Considering I am now 72 I guess I have eaten 100 dozen over the years. Someone wrote here that unless they were fresh off the line they aren't any good. I beg the differ with this individual. Day old make excellent dipping donuts. Milk, coffee or hot chocolate were great for this task. As a kid, we never passed the store without buying at least 2 dozen donuts 1 just glazed and a dozen of whatever was in the counter.

But they have an arrangement with 7/11 convenience stores where they have a donut shelf in th store where’s you can buy selected packs or a small selection of individual donuts. Not sure how long they remain on the shelf though before being thrown out.

I found this video son interesting...thanks again for all your research on each video! My favorite KK doughnut is their Key Lime Pie one. Haven't had one in a long while, but wow - it was sooo good!

There used to be a Krispy Kreme in Peoria Illinois, I went every Friday and bought 2 dozen donuts for people at work

We used to have the KK donuts came to my elementary school every Friday and sell these donuts 10 cents for 1 donut and 10 donuts for $1.00. That was 1983-1985, when I moved away.

They have recently expanded in NYC. again. I remember first opening in 90s in NY NY. W 23 Chelsea. The smell and sight of them coming hot off the line drew in many people. Enjoyed coffee and donuts many times there and from small take away shop at the original World Trade Center. I think their business went down as 'we' saw how much we were fattening up. PS, the pic re 'shop in NYC in 1996' is a rendering of the big 'Times Square' Krispy Kreme on Broadway - west 48 street.

I have coffee but no Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. I could almost smell the sweet aroma.

With the collapse of so many malls the few Krispy Kreme donut stores where you could get them hot off the line are far and few between now.
But a hot Krispy Kreme is definitely one of the best donuts in the world.

Seems like our best USA products had humble beginnings. I wish our local bakeries could have hung on. All the Mom and Pop bakeries gone by me in Northwest Indiana. What a shame.

I never met a doughnut I didn't like and Krispy Kreme is no exception. I even drove for them for a short time while taking a break from long distance trucking. If I had not left when I did, I would probably weigh as much as my car.

I never thought they lived up to the hype. I think most of the smaller locally owned do nut shops do a better job.

I can remember when KK came to Visalia. It was the talk of the town. After a couple weeks we decided to try it. Oh my did we quickly understand what all the hype was about ! Insanely addictive gluttonous sugary goodness. Organizations started to sell them on street corners for fundraising. It was hyped for probably a year then it dissipated quickly. Great History lesson ! Thank you

The glazed original or the chocolate glazed, when hot, are the _BOMB_ and the only thing that comes close after those is a hot caramel glazed doughnut with real bacon bits on it from Duck Doughnuts.
