Things That Have Been Abandoned…1960s-1980s!
VISIT THE RECOLLECTION ROAD STORE
www.bonfire.com/store/recollection-road/
This is a compilation of my older videos. Past decades offer up many things that capture the essence of the time. Since the 1960s there have been countless things that, at the time, seemed perfect, but through the years they simply faded away. The must-haves from those analog decades of the 1960s through the 1980s have now been abandoned for newer, faster, or sometimes more compact replacements. So, let’s take a look back, and if you lived through these years, you will remember many of these abandoned items!

My Wife and I were married in 1980 and there was still a Drive-In in Bryan Texas back then. Thursday was our "Night out" and even though it was a 50 mile drive (one way), we'd still go because there just wasn't a lot to do around here. We'd go on Thursday because that night, they'd show 3 movies instead of the normal 2. We'd carry a thick quilt and 2 pillows with us to lie on, go by Taco Bell and get something to eat (I also miss those $0.65 Burrito Supremes 😋), turn the truck around and let down the tailgate, and then watch the movies in comfort. We've seldom gone to a "walk-In" picture show, LOL! 🤣

In 1970s UK we had something called Jackdaw Files - a publisher who produced these amazing A4 cardboard enevelope files covering allsorts of subjects. These ranged from the American War of Independence, Russian Revolution, French Revolution, History of Printing, Bread making through the ages, they even did one on the JFK assassination. They contained facsimile reprints of primary sources - documents, maps, photos, letters, illustrations etc. of the subject. Probably 20 separate documents in each one. Really brought the subject to life. They stopped making Jackdaw files because they were so expensive to produce. The few still out there now change hands for a lot of money. You can probably get all the info held in a Jackdaw on the internet now, but there was nothing to beat holding the reprinted primary sources in your hands. A very sad example of human disinvention.

Born in 58 there are 3 things every home had as I was growing up. 1) coffee mug trees. Metallic 'trees' that kept 4 or 6 coffee mugs on the kitchen counter. So convenient. No more opening those annoying cupboard doors for us. No, siree. We had us beige mugs right there on the counter. 2) large wood salad bowl. Every, and I do mean EVERY, home had a large wooden salad bowl, wooden salad utensils for mixing and serving, and 6 little side bowls. It was like fancy dinner for those of us using paper napkins. Klassy. 3) macrame plant holders for your spider plant. What has happened to spider plants? We all had them. We'd talk about the number of shoots and babies. And every plant was suspended in a macrame plant holder. Those good old days that people wax nostalgic for were filled with god-awful fashion, acrylic fabrics and some pretty wacky ideas about status symbols. 🎉🎉🎉

My mom drank Tab in the 70s. I tasted it once and thought it was gross. Now in her 80s she's practically addicted to Diet Coke. I loved Wacky Packages, but all I have left now are the checklists. In the mid to late 80s we had a Video Madness here, and a West Coast Video. I believe I still have my Video Madness ID card. We never had a Blockbuster here. I remember the TV ads for West Coast Video. The jingle was "West Coast Video - Take home the entertainment."

About 17 years ago I met the Hollywood hairdresser who invented the Farrah hairdo in the 1970s. His son, also a hairdresser, was dating someone I knew. I had that style for a couple of years in the late 1970s but I got tired of the high maintenance so I grew it out. Colored toilet paper. I remember seeing paper and tissues in just about every color you could imagine. And then it went away, amidst rumors that the dyes were bad for the environment. This was right around the time that Earth Day was celebrated for the first time. There were also rumors that the dyes could cause irritation of ::ahem:: sensitive areas, and even cancer.

So, I pass it weekly, but unfortunately no fond memories. 🫤 Just replaced mom’s old blender, with a new old blender that I found at a thrift shop. You are kinda off with regards to the automatic vs manual/standard transmission. I'm 60 and have never driven a stick and I know very few people who do. It's long been normal here in the U.S. that automatic transmissions are more common, way before cell phones, internet, gps etc. My Mother couldn't pass her driver's test using a standard before my Uncle lent her his automatic. My Dad wanted her to stop depending on him to drive her everywhere so she told him we had to get a different car if that is what he wanted! If you watch American You Tubers who live in Europe they often say that they needed to learn to use a manual transmission if they wanted to drive in Europe. I'm sure automatics are available but there was social pressure from European friends to learn how to use the "standard". When I was a teenager my pushy sister in law insisted I test drive a manual as it was so "easy". I had never even seen one before. I almost killed her, my brother, myself and the car salesman. I learned to stand up to her from then on and endless family conflict soon began! Oh and I still occasionally write out a check a few times a year where I get to use the cursive I learned many centuries ago but I'm more than happy paying my bills using voice commands on my various electronic devices. No addressing envelopes and buying stamps all the time. 😂
