This is great! I can't tell you how many times I went to the original Steak-n-Shake. Heck. It was my mom's first meal after leaving the near by Brokaw (now Bromenn) hospital, after my birth. Oh, the days of the car hops taking orders and bringing food out. Such great memories from my youth. Thank you, RR!

My dad used to take me to Steak & Shake back in 1976-77 for lunch when I was in Kindergarten, which back then were 1/2 days, I could never finish the small burger and fries, but, by May 1977, when I was turning 6 & at the end of the school year, I was finally able to finish that burger and fries!
I've always remembered that time we had together since I was his only son & youngest out of 5 children.

Their downfall in the last 10-15 years was the ever growing menu, which slowed down service and diminished the quality. Most in my area around St. Louis closed pre-pandemic. A few reopened during this mess with a streamlined menu. The quality and speed now is an impressive turn around.

Thanks for covering Steak n Shake...part of my indoctrination to Bloomington-Normal Illinois in the 1980's was being taught the history of Steak n Shake! Favorite sandwich still is the Frisco Melt... but I had to let go of Orange Freezes when I found out I am diabetic.
Hopefully Steak n Shake will keep going and return to how it was in the '80's...it was more expensive than other burger joints, but it's atmosphere was more like a restaurant than just fast food.
One more thing... please don't forget to tip your wait staff!!! Regardless of who the jokers are that own the Corporation, it's the Wait Staff, Cooks, Table Bussers... and yes, the Individual Store Managers that make Steak n Shake special. Be sure to be a gracious guest and thank them too from time to time.

I remember going to Steak n Shake as a kid on Friday nights with just my Mom and brothers and sisters and then we got it to go to take out to my Father as he worked 2nd shift at the railroad yards.,We only had drive inn type in those days we ate the in the car. I worked for them the late 70's and early 80's as a teenager, in Galesburg, IL. I was one of the last car hops. One day I was sweeping the parking lot and I heard voices on a speaker and it was McDonald's next store testing their newly installed drive thru window. Steak and Shake eventually went to drive thru also was not best for their business model since they cooked to order unlike McDonald's. All my brothers and sisters had worked at McDonald's but I was proud that I worked at a better quality restaurant.

I can't speak for all the Steak and Shakes, however the SAS in the Saint Louis region in the 60's and 70's were not only the best food places; they were the only place to go crusin'. SAS was like the Midwest version of American Graffiti. There were a few on the north and south sides of St. Louis where every weekend, it was the place to cruise and show off your cars. I grew up on the north side so I frequented the Riverview Circle SAS. I had a 67 GTO and showed up at SAS, grabbed a burger and shake and met with several friends to talk cars, girls and HS. It was a time like no other in history and sadly will never be repeated. Those were the good old days...listening to Johnny Rabbitt on KxOK (Top 40), eating great food and crusin the Circle.

Since the C19 they have workarants. The very type of restaurant they advertised they didn't have because they had servers. Now there are no more servers. When you walk in you're greeted with a computer touchscreen where you place and pay for your order then sit down and wait for your number to be called then you go up to the counter and get your food and bring it back to the table, ie you serve yourself.
They removed all of the tables in the middle of the seating area and now only have a few tables near the windows, they also removed all of the counter seats because this where you fetch your food from when your number is called. The seating area looks odd because there is a large empty area in the middle of what used to have tables and chairs. We've only gone one time in the last 3yrs because it's just not the same. We were the only ones inside and it was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. If you're a drive thru customer probably not much has changed for you but the eat in experience has much to be desired nowadays. It wouldn't surprise me if they did away with eating in altogether and just strictly have drive thru ordering only. McDonald's and Wendy's have remodeled their restaurants much the same, they've done way with much of the seating area and now have order kiosks inside.
Seems like the days of fastfood sit down eat in restaurants are now just a distant memory.

Yes! What a great place! I work @ a fam. owned seafood restaurant. A guest wanted a hamburger. I told him could sell him a aged Angus Rib-eye for $27(but, it will be the BEST burger you'll ever have). We have our own meat grinder. I received a $50 tip! It was a double meat patty & French fries. Please do one on Princess Burgers & their homemade root beer, Please? I'm from Houston, TX (Also maybe Charlie's Hamburgers...over two dozen SOLD!) LOL!

You lucky these days if you get your order in 30 minutes . There are a lot of them in Georgia that have closed. The last steak and shake that my family a d I ate at that was good was the one in Carrollton Georgia.

I like their shakes but I stopped going to the one near me when I waited close to 20 minutes for a burger and a shake at the drive thru. This was after a prior visit where the wait was close to 15 minutes. I thought it might just be an issue with the drive thru so on my final visit I went inside and placed a to-go order and...you got it, another interminable wait. I thought it might just just be the location near me but when I looked into it I found out long wait times are quite common. Too bad. Like I say, I like the shakes but I don't like waiting all night for it.

My small town in western Tennessee had one that my entire family loved. It was always busy, even during the pandemic. Our town has few restaurants to choose from. Six months ago, it closed and was torn down. They’re building that abomination of Tex-Mex there - Chipotle. Ugh. Now there is nowhere to get a decent milkshake.
