In fact, there are some restaurants that advertise their breakfast food before anything else, like IHOP, Waffle House, and Another Broken Egg Cafe. It's the best time in history to be a breakfast lover, but whose breakfast food is a cut above the rest? We tried the breakfast at 14 different chain restaurants, and we've ranked them from the worst to the absolute best.

The fact you can get an entire meal with carbs protein etc for under $10 means it's not expensive LOL if you were to buy the butter, flour, syrup, eggs, bacon, potatoes you are not getting it for the same price as you would at ihop. You may get more for your money, AKA a better deal buying everything at the store since it's much larger quantities, but if you're looking for a meal not feeding dozens of people there's really no comparison

I would seriously rate Denny's higher than IHOP. Food at IHOP came to the table with ice crystals. Toast was not toast - bread soaked in melted butter. Neither meal was edible. Denny's food at least comes to the table hot. I'm picking Cracker Barrel as the best. Have never been disappointed.

Cracker Barrel's buttermilk pancakes are absolutely incredible. As is their Cracker Barrel brand of syrup. Every time I visit the one nearest me, I usually stop by their store and buy a box of their brand of pancake mix - so, I
can enjoy their pancakes at home. I also love their chicken fried steak & gravy breakfast meals.
One thing I wish they would do is to offer customers a choice of either toast, biscuits, or a side of silver dollar pancakes with each of their breakfast items.

Waffle House is a hangout for “Night People” and not where I want to have a sit down breakfast. Cracker Barrel is more family oriented, has real maple syrup and generous portions. I agree with another commenter that a local diner can serve you a breakfast bonanza at a reasonable price. You just have to find them.

You're a 100% correct about Denny's. They can never get over medium eggs right never. Over-medium eggs are tricky, so it takes a bit of skill and comfort level of the flat top. A seasoned cook would get them right. So the only thing I can think of, is that Denny's kitchen staff comes and goes and they do not stay long enough to get used to the flat top.

  • @raymondbrown3098

I agree with most of the top 5, but too many of the breakfast restaurants have started using prepackaged ingredients for their breakfasts. Biscuits and gravy especially are unacceptable when made from a mix; usually tastes like wallpaper paste. Unfortunately many other restaurants have resorted to prepackaged ingredients as well. This gives local restaurant choices greater appeal.

When I got out of the Army at age 20 (1980), my first real-world job was cooking at Waffle House....No order-tickets to look at whan it got busy (waitresses would call the orders out, in WH code, and you had to get it ready by starting it right then, or else remembering it verbatim!), and since the grill and waffle-irons are right there in front of the bar/booths, the Eyes of Texas were Upon You (so to speak) the whole time.
That's where I learned how to flip easy-overs (w/o breaking any yolks) with one hand.....~while~ slamming down toast or pulling a waffle out with the other. When the bars closed and it got *busy* , people would finish eating and just hang out to watch me wheel and deal.
I'm 62 now, and I still have my WH name-tag pin in a box somewhere, and, over the years driving/on tour, in the Southeast I ~always~ eat at WaffleHouse.
They actually have great coffee, too, believe it or not......

Only Dillard's in North Ga. is worse. Denny's used to be 1/2 decent, but horrible food and service has been typical lately. Forget the Varsity in Atlanta. It might appeal to the homeless, truckers, and those who don't know what decent food should taste like. Cracker Barrel was a disappointment. People were smoking in the non-smoking area and no one was correcting them. The food was bearable,, but sometimes uncooked or unripe. The gift shop was full of home like gifts made in China. The only things not made there were food items like jellies and old candies. I've only been to First Watch once-not bad. I wish we had a Bob Evans here instead of Denny's. I tried them in Ohio and liked them. Huddle and Waffle House are too much alike-cheap. IHOP was better.
