  • Going out for Italian food is an American pastime. The numbers don't lie: One out of every eight U.S. restaurants serves Italian food, totaling about 100,000 Italian eateries throughout the country.
American Italian food is something all its own. Spaghetti with large meatballs isn't really a popular dish in Italy, and pizza in the U.S. is generally very different from what you'd get at a pizzeria in Naples. The restaurants listed here definitely specialize in the American variety of Italian food, but some do it far, far better than others. So you don't have to, we tried 15 Italian chain restaurants. Here's the best one.

That's if you can find non-chain restaurants. I live in Oregon & we used to have so many mom & pop Italian places 20 years ago. Now all we have is Olive garden. Maybe there's a fine dining Italian place here or there but it's out of most people's budget. I personally don't think Italian is as popular a cuisine as a few decades ago, at least not in the Pacific NW. Used to be all the rage here.

I waited tables at original location and they used to encourage us present a free shot of sambuca to tables with their dessert whenever we wanted, not for problems just for fun. The specials and the wine list were incredible too. I worked at the olive garden as both a line/prep cook and you are correct. They are the McDonald's of Italian. Everything comes in a bag frozen. Even the items that are made "fresh" all come in a bag frozen and are made which isn't the worst thing ever but I think is the overall atmosphere and emphasis on speed over quality. Nothing is cooked with care. You just are encouraged just to throw shit on the plate regardless of how it looks or how it's cooked and get it TF out on the window where it sits for awhile because usually there's no expo. The servers are usually their own expo.

I miss Bravo. I used to work for them and they really tried to make good food in house. The inconsistency comes from the nature of them trying to make good real food that wasn't from a bag. If the recipes were followed the food was really good but getting every cook to do each recipe exactly every time is hard. Unlike Olive Garden that cooks most of it from frozen. Sadly Bravo got sold to a new parent company and that parent company has HORRIBLY mismanaged the restaurants. Covid likely will be the death stroke for Bravo now.
