    This is a good video but not for a 2001 Dodge ram 2500 5.9 diesel, The fuel filter canister is directly above the ECU and the oil pressure switch. On a 2001 dodge ram 2500 5.9 diesel, you can not get to the ECU with the fuel filter canister in the way. To change the oil pressure sensor on a 2001 dodge ram 2500 5.9 diesel, remove the left wheel, and then take off the plastic fender skirt. Once the fender skirt is removed, using a deep well socket and extension the sensor is easily remove after disconnecting the three prong connector

      Jim Roach hey jim i too have the exact same truck. My dash gauge when you turn on key raises to the no pressure line. Doest move even when you start it reads zero. Hooked a manual gauge to the top of oil filter housing and getting normal pressure. So i changed oil pressure sensor. Still doing the exact same thing. The only thing left i can think of is one of the wires has a bare spot and it grounding out somewhere.

      But Jim, you can remove the fuel filter mount more easily than jacking, blocking, remove tire and plastic then you finally get to work under a vehicle. If you undo the two bolts and the banjo fittings from your filter and filter mount you can continue as shown in this video. Idk what most people's preference is but I would much rather work from the top when possible. Plus you won't have to go buy new black plastic to get your fender well secure again . Seriously man, disconnect your banjos and connectors pull 2 bolts and let the hole set up just hangout for a sec. You will have all the room you need and will be leaning over the truck instead of kneeling or crouching under it. Just my thoughts

    Just replaced sender in my 1999 Ram 2500 with Cummins engine. Could not follow this video advice; had to use advice from Jim Roach, below (Thanks, Jim!). Removed wheel, drilled out 9 plastic rivets, removed plastic fender skirt. Then came the difficult part. I am 76 years old, and have skinny arms, but could not get my arm in there. Fortunately, my wife could, and she removed the connector, removed the sender (after I broke it loose with (2) 1/2" extensions and a 32mm socket), and inserted the new sender finger tight. Then I tightened it with a 1 1/16" socket. Six-point sockets are preferable, but I only had 12-point. They worked, but I had to wiggle it a bit to get the socket off the new one. Then she was able to reach in and put the connector on the new sender. Started it up, and SUCCESS!! BTW, no oil came out. The truck had sat for a week without being run. Was able to buy a sender on Amazon for $25.99. I added a couple of other things to get the total over $49, and got free shipping. The part was delivered to my house 4 days later by UPS.

    I have a 98.5 Cummins 24v and I'm trying to get my hands on a mechanical gauge but do you think my sensor is going bad I'll start the truck and sometimes on start up it will read pressure sometimes not but I'll let it idle and it wont move but when I drive down the road if I'm above 1400rpms it picks up the pressure and then at idle it drops to 0 again then after a bit it just stays on at the 3rd line it never reads the 40psi like it should be around plus recently I got a no bus and my gauge cluster stopped working entirely so I disconnected my batteries to reset everything and that made my gauge cluster start working again so I'm wondering if my cluster my be going out as well

      Engine oil pressure can be monitored with most major diagnostic scanners, and those major parameters, (ect, oil pressure, rpm, etc.) can be monitored on the aftermarket monitoring systems as well. Its always nice to have the truck gauges working as well.

    Would the sensor be causing my issue. I drive an 04 24 valve and after the truck warms up the oil pressure drops to nearly into the red, its still in the "good" zone on the guage but is right on the edge of being too low. When i start driving it jumps up really fast to over 40, where it should be. Like even a 250 rpm increase cause the oil pressure to jump to where it needs to be. I know that an increase in rmp increases pressure but would it cause that drastic of an increase? Thats why I think its either the guage or pressure sensor. The truck runs perfect with zero blow by.

    • @thoroughbreddiesel
      @thoroughbreddiesel  Před 7 lety +2

      Oil pressure sensor failure on the early model Cummins 5.9’s is common, but you ALWAYS need to verify what your engines oil pressure is with a MANUAL GAUGE. I cant stress this enough. Please, before you deem the sensor bad, put a manual gauge on the truck and make sure that you aren’t having an internal issue in your engine.

    • @thoroughbreddiesel
      @thoroughbreddiesel  Před 5 lety

      I am not familiar with how the oil pressure sending unit corresponds with a medium duty chassis. I would be almost afraid that you could have an electrical problem that is causing your derate. Fix the oil pressure sensor first and see where that leaves you.

  • @macbeliever
    @macbeliever Před 2 lety +1

    In this case, how do you know if you have a bad sensor, or a bad switch? And where is the switch located relative to the sensor? Thanks

    • @thoroughbreddiesel
      @thoroughbreddiesel  Před 2 lety

      For the 5.9’s they have a 3 wire sensor, and there were some trucks that people converted to a 1 wire switch. The oil pressure sensor is what we sell, but Cummins has a conversion to take it to a switch which basically have a off/on rationality. If your truck still has the 3 wire harness, it still has the sensor and you are good to go. Do as the video talks on , first verify your oil pressure. Then diagnose the sensor, input signal, or wiring harness trouble.

    • @macbeliever
      @macbeliever Před 2 lety +1

      @@thoroughbreddiesel my truck is that of a 2002 Freightliner stepvan with the 5.9 Cummins ISB 185. Oil pressure gauge is working and showing 60 psi of oil pressure, but has a sporadic check-engine light that indicates no oil pressure. Engine gets derated to ~50% power when the CEL is active. • @thoroughbreddiesel
      @thoroughbreddiesel  Před 2 lety +1

    I'm having an issue where my 12valve is fluctuating between about 20 to 40. My turbo is making noises, so I'm going to be rebuilding that first. My question is, if the oil pressure being affected by a worn turbo, or is my turbo worn because of oil pressure issues? its got over 400K miles original turbo btw.

    • @thoroughbreddiesel
      @thoroughbreddiesel  Před 5 lety +2

      Turbo being worn really will not affect the oil pressure. If you have a turbo bearing failure the truck will begin to “consume” oil in some fashion, IE, you may see fresh oil in the tailpipe of the truck. If the truck starts at 40 and drops to 20 as the vehicle comes to temp, then will jump back to 40 if you rev it up. The minimum allowable oil pressure at idle is 10 psi, 30 psi at the engines rated RPM.

  • @thoroughbreddiesel
    @thoroughbreddiesel  Před 11 lety

    The truck is actually sitting over top of the oil water separating drain which runs the entire length of the shop. We wanted the customers to see that oil is going to come out and to not be intimidate by that. We tend to assume that most viewers will know how to clean up their own oil so we didn't feel that it was necessary to include that in our video.
