What Causes Low Oil Pressure? Troubleshooting And Causes Of Low Diesel Engine Oil Pressure.

  • What causes low oil pressure? This is a common question that I get in the comments section and for good measure, as the oil pressure is what protects much of an engine from damage. If an engine has low oil pressure this can cause significant damage to the bearings, crankshaft, camshaft, valve train, and other expensive components. All knowledge is a gift. You really need to look into opening your own shop, & having technicians work for you. ALOT of the information you know by memory is VERY VERY delicate, your doing a tremendous favor in explaining this information because its in a sense that anyone can comprehend. I am a tech myself & I personally want to thank you for taking time in making these videos.

We had a similar problem with our Cummins N-8-G2 180 KVA Genset engine. All the valve springs broke off and one exhaust valve broke, hit the piston and was stuck in the head. Some broken parts found their way into the turbo and ate the turbine wheel. There was also diesel in the coolant and one bent push rod. The head had to be replaced and the whole engine rebuilt.

glad to see the wake up call for mechanics, I rebuilt a Nissan ZD30 diesel engine, 4 cylinder 16 valves, dual cam, turbo, 1ST engine rebuild in my life, I rebuilt it as per OEM manufacturers specifications technical manual, I didn't measure the oil bypass valves as I didn't have an inside Caliper, there are several on this engine, if they stick closed oil will blow out of a seal and have extremely high oil pressure especially when cold, if they stick open there is low oil pressure, so I had oil pissing out of a seal, baffled me, so I took pump housing off, front cover on engine, found bypass valve black, replaced the housing with one that slides out by itself as per manual, the engine had run like a clock, I believe its a poor design by Nissan as oil cylinder, which valve slides in and out of, is aluminium, should have a liner, I now have found out the most critical part of an engine rebuild is oil pump and complete oil system bypass valves, the rest is easy, 5 days later I am a lot wiser.

I’ve recently bought a Porsche 987 to find out I was also lied to. Doing a test drive didn’t reveal any problems, but a flat tire in the rear did so it was a short ride. No lights on the dashboard, but the battery was also something wrong with. After putting it on a trailer to get it home I had to replace the battery to get it working again. After this I started to notice all the lights on my dash to lit up like a Christmas tree. I’ve read this might be a result of the battery change, but I’m thinking it’s not. Letting it run idle for 15mins the one thing that worried me the most was: ‘oil pressure too low’. Than I saw my cooling cap with hot boiling water and steam trying to get out! I didn’t open it with the water cooking but I’m worried there might be some mayonnaise in it. Suggests blown head gasket. I have to be sure of course but this might be the reason of the low oil pressure I assume. Question: is there anything to fix it immediately so I can drive the car to the garage? Is it dangerous? Can I just add more oil or water/coolant? I don’t want to get the engine blown, but I need to get it out of my parking underneath the building first in case of towing it. Just wondering how dangerous it is or what I should do. I’m just looking for the least amount of costs.

Funny this video came my way. A week ago Friday I had an alarm come on while going down highway. I scan the gauges and immediately notice "Low Oil Pressure" indicator light is on though oil gauge still indicates 53-lbs pressure. It's a Detroit Diesel DDEC-4, 12.7L (non-emissions) with 1, 058,000 miles on a complete rebuild just 25,000 ago. Engine ran normal, and CEL / SEL circuits never came on, nor derate. I noticed upon slowing down to a stop, the physical gauge did not drop with rpm's, it was still 53-lbs. I shut engine down, popped the hood and checked oil level which was good and color was good. I fired engine back up and it still ran like a champ and now the physical gauge matched rpm's though idiot light is still on, the CEL / SEL system never engaged. So I conferred with Clark Diesel and we both agreed possible sending unit. So I ordered one on the spot and after two days normal driving around 700+ miles, I got the replacement sending unit, installed it and life is good again. The fact the CEL / SEL never engaged, the engine never derated, and idiot light and physical gauge conflicted with each other told me it was a simple $100 sending unit. This is why I love electronic diesels, they are so easy to diagnose, even in the field.

Thank you for all the helpful explanations, I love your videos. I have an old 93 model flat top with a 3406C converted to a B(4ck). I’ve always had about 55 running hot on the highway, and just last year, it dropped to 45-50. I got an overhaul and replaced everything but the block and it’s still at 45-50 running down the highway. I was told that the front and rear seals and cam bearings can affect the pressure too, I haven’t done that yet.
    Is that true?

Total solution = Collapsed Oil Filter {more than likely a Baldwin Oil Filter} just change oil filters. Other possibilities, oil pressure sensor or oil pump... which is basically 2 metal gears that rarely fail.

Thanks for taking the time and effort to share your knowledge. Neither my son nor I are professional mechanics but we prefer to do our maintenance (preventative and corrective) when we feel competent in doing so. You have helped. He has a 3128 in a marine application and I have a C-7 in a motorhome.Since the engine in a motorhome is installed with the front facing aft I assume your references to left side/right side or driver side is reversed in the motorhome application. I belong to a large motorhome based group (Fleetwood Discovery) with a large number of existing CAT powered units and will encourage the membership to subscribe- if for no other then reason then to be able to talk about a problem intelligently.

+tom ferrara Thank you for the support, tell them to subscribe please, it really helps the channel grow. Alright so for the jargon on the RV engine, on an engine the left side is always in relation to facing from the rear of the engine looking towards the front of the engine so the left side is always the same side, but you are correct that it would now be the passenger side since your engine is facing with the front towards the rear of your rig. I should have just said the intake side, would've made more sense.

Thought id add to the list of possible causes. I have low oil pressure in my diesel now. It eventually progressed to tappet knock. Which I had no idea what all this was until I've started learning about engines and cars more recently. I suspect the DPF filter causing it. This is more of a question really. Is it possible that a partially/blocked DPF will cause soot to travel back into the engine as it cant go anywhere else and mix with the oil blocking the oil pickup screen or pump causing oil pressure low as not as much or at all oil is getting to the top end of the engine? I plan to drain the oil take off the sump and take a look at the pickup screen/tube and pump. I hope it is that cause I can get a new pump or just clean the pickup screen. But still neeed to take care of the DPF. Cant drive it like that either. Any thoughts on this and will an EGR delete help at all.

We have a C15 ACERT MXS series engine that was showing low oil pressure and shut down. Towed it to a shop. They said it was showing 35 - 40 PSI and should be 75 PSI on a cold start. ECU showed at one point it was in the 20 PSI range. They took the pan off to inspect and said that the bearings look good, but there's "No cross marking in the liners. Liners are glazed." They want to do an in-frame to the tune of $18,500. We had an IVA #1 code as well before all this happened. I can't find much help on this engine as far as cross marking and low oil pressure. There's only 55,000 miles on the engine, it's a 2007. Does this sound right? They didn't pull the head to inspect the cylinders.

Awesome clip which is very helpful!
Would you advise me with my Santa Fe 2015 (the ODO = 45,000 miles), encountered with an engine stuck (engine turned off when I accelerated from 55miles/hr.). The engine was disassembled and found the crankshaft #4 jammed with the rod bearing (the bearing has rotated inside the connecting rod, and along the center of 2 bearings crashed and damaged which marked its copper material on the crankshaft except 2 points which are lubricant holes on the crankshaft). All other 3 bearing sets and crankshafts #1,2,3, all cylinders, all pistons with its components and all the cam parts on top of the engine are in the perfect conditions even not have any minor wear! The workshop technician concluded the Lubricant pump failure didn't provide sufficient oil pressure was the root cause of the problem and requested to replace. I am very confused not sure if that is correct cause OR should be some mechanical dimension tolerance issue or lubricant pipe of the #4 clogged that prevented the lubricant from protecting the #4 so that the friction happened and caused the damage? My car lubricant pump is built in together with the engine balance system (not really understand this). How do you guess about the cause and would you give me an advice what should I do to ensure my engine fixed properly? Thank you very much and have a nice day!

Great video as always! For those people who worry about a 5 PSI drop in oil pressure, remember that the oil pressure is affected by the oil's viscosity as well. So if your oil temp is different or you used a different brand or viscosity of oil or different oil filter, that will affect the pressure as well. So if you want to compare oil pressure, you need to be running at the exact same RPM, using the exact same oil and filter, and the oil temp needs to be exactly the same since any of these factors can affect oil pressure.

Thanks for that detailed info on oil pressure problems. In my case The old pressure starts at 90 psi and after about a half hour of idle drops below 30 psi on the starboard engine the port engine settles up at 60 psi at idle what would cause the starboard engine oil pressure to slowly diminish like that. The difference between the port engine and the starboard engine after a half hour of idling is like 30 psi. I’d appreciate some direction where I should start looking thank you

Very informative video. I'm the chief of a small rural fire department and we got a 2003 Stewart Stevenson M1078 granted to us by the feds, 8000 miles, 500 hours. Kenworth replaced a sensor on it and the darn thing wasn't tightened down properly and spewed most of the oil out before we noticed it. We got it to a truck stop, they tightened the sensor, put in new oil and everything seemed fine, drove it 60 miles through some mountains, then suddenly and ongoing it has a fluctuating oil pressure between 25-40 under 30mph but if you ask for any torque or speed above 30mph the pressure drops almost immediately to zero and the motor goes into limp. Kenworth can't figure it out but they suspect there might be something in the oil pan or the uptake tube is busted off or something.. Any other suggestions??

Have an 07 MXS, hot oil pressure will get to 15-16psi at idle, and at 1500 rpms it only makes about 50psi. From everything I've seen it should be closer to the 40ish psi range at hot idle. This is a company truck that is new to me, 1,543,000 miles, no clue if it has been rebuilt at all. seems to run fine and pull fine, currently has codes 95 and 98 though, which I will hopefully get fixed soon. oil was changed just under 3000 miles ago with a baldwin filter. it doesn't seem to make oil or mix oil/coolant. I plan to put a mechanical gauge on it and verify, but the Jake's don't work very well either so I plan to take the valve covers off and check out everything up top and do an overhead. any other suggestions?

I learned a lot about this engine already in your videos. Thank You. But I still have a question, just please give me an opinion here. So I'm very close to buy a 1997 Tiffing Allegro Bus. It's a pusher and has a CAT 3127. I inspected and test drove on a super steep mountain. Everything works good. Temps are normal. Exhaust brakes work, has allison tranny. My only concern is the oil pressure gauge is barely staying in the green. As I accelerate is goes up just a bit. But it's not jumping. Blowby is minimum, oil clean, coolant clean, all systems read no fails in the computer. Question is could it be just the gauge or sender? Is that common issue, ... the chassis is freigthliner., is it a high risk of getting a worn out engine/bearings.? It only has 53k miles. Priced at 18k... coach is fair. Kindly tell me your opinion and what you have seen out there as I know you touch lots of rv s. Take care, and great job.

I have a question. Couple of months ago, I've rebuilt 6NZ C15. New head, new liners, new rings, new main and rod bearings, new oil pump, old pistons and old rods. reason for rebuild: large blowby, low oil pressure (15 psi at idle when hot). Truck always ran hot (200 - 205 F), nobody knew why, and nobody could figure it out why, for the truck has been with the company for more than 8 years. After the rebuild, oil pressure is 29 psi hot at idle, 45 psi cold. I know some other 6NZs we have in fleet run up to 75 psi cold, 45 hot. Have you ever seen that before?

Cat told me to run it hard so the rings will be seated and then it will run fine after a while. The problem is that when i take it out to drive it, i lose power and once even shut down on me just few miles from the yard! I waited about 20 min then got it to the yard which it was about 3 miles maybe less away. Left it running and took the dip stick off and was spitting out oil!!! I called cat and they said it can be crank case pressure but i feel that’s too many things happening on a platinum rebuilt?! What you think?

I have a Toyota Hilux surf 1991 model 2LTE LN130 chassis and recently had some work done on it for a broken timing belt which required a rebuild, when I put it in to the mechanic I asked him to fix the engine, do the water pump and also do some minor stuff like a headlight and such, I also wanted a whole list of everything needed on the car so I can start ticking them off 1by1
When I got the car back he had done the work but also taken the factory original radiator out saying it was rusty and has put an after market one in, he didn't ask me, he can't show me the radiator he took out (which worked fine for a year no problem) or even show me photos of it, and he charged me for it, when I asked for it or to see it he said he'd thrown it out
Can I tell him to put my old radiator back in or similar and that I'm not paying for any of that radiator stuff that he's done? Or is this a normal thing and I should trust him?
    Thanks

    Great video.
I am having an issue with my trucks oil pressure changing from day to day on my N14?? I got low oil pressure one day. I replaced the oil pump out thinking it was bad. Turns out a piston cooling nozzle cracked. It was replaceable from outside the engine so I changed it. Everything back to normal
Two weeks later low oil pressure out of nowhere while driving (after about 3 hours of driving that day at normal levels). Tow the truck home, check nozzles all good. Check the oil relief valve and it seems to be fine. Truck randomly gains oil pressure again after letting it sit for a few days and restarting it. I replaced the oil pressure sensor as well just in case. I drive it on a small job everything is fine and running at 28 psi under load and 10 at idle. Wake up the next day and it idles at 10 psi cold and throws a “check fluids light” at 1500 rpm because the motor struggles to get 20 psi pressure (cold at 1500rpm).
Me and my mechanics are so confused. The pressure keeps changing from day to day. I guess it time to drop the pan and see if anything is blocking the oil intake? The pressure changes random and quickly.

Just out of curiosity dude, that engine which had the valve embedded in the piston, did it require a new engine or were you able to save the block, replace the piston, rehone the bore and just get away with new head/valves? I'm not all that familiar with larger diesel engines like the kind you work on. Most of my experience is with smaller automotive engines 1.4/2.4L I4/I5/V6 we have in the European market and i have seen similar damage before but its a used engine job in that case.
