For all of Zeppelin's "god of thunder" dynamic they can go as soft and delicate as anyone. I think that in part is why they are so great.

You'll probably really love 'Tangerine' and 'That's The Way' from this show as well, they're both also mellow acoustic pieces.

That's the way is one of the most under appreciated acoustic song of all time.
It's amusing to me how many people think of Zeppelin only as a hard rock band, but they were doing 'unplugged stuff (on album and in concert) way before Unplugged was even a concept.

Zeppelin would often do a 3 or 4 song sit-down acoustic set in the middle of their shows. Bonham was often offstage for these taking a quick break. He'd return the favor during his lengthy "Moby Dick" drum solos.

Robert is singing about a love for Joni Mitchell a 60s folk singer from Canada who settled in southern California. This song represents another dynamic of Zeppelin where they would set aside part if their live show to do an acoustic set , which along with Jimmys solos and encores led to 3 hour shows!!!

Saw them in Toronto in '71 when album III came out. The acoustic set was a regular thing and one of the best parts of the concert. Beautiful playing by John Paul Jones on mandolin. He would also play bass parts with his feet on the organ pedals which you can see right in front of him at the end of this. I believe he was a church organist at one time and it's something they all learn to do. Supposedly this song is about Joni Mitchell. If you can find a live version of That's the Way, it has a similar feel to this song. I believe Robert Plant always loved the sound of the mandolin and it was a big part of his music when he performed with Alison Krauss.

Yes.....”children of the sun begin to awake” Laurel Canyon, where so many of the musicians of the time, including. Mitchell lived....”she plays guitar and she sings......oh she sings”. Mitchell is ranked as one of the finest songwriters/singers of the last 50 years. Plant had a huge crush from afar on her. He fell in love with the whole vibe and scene of California in 1968/69.......and has really stayed in love with that place and time, very wistfully, as so many of us alive at that time have done. Plant referred to himself in an interview in 2017 as a rather “sad, old hippy”. Allot of us are.

You'll find several phrases to describe Zeppelin's music: hammer of the gods (itself a lyric from "Immigrant Song"), tight but loose, light and shade, whisper to the thunder. Their music often display at least one of these mantras and what type of journey you take with it is up to the listener.

  • @j.kevvideoproductions.6463

All of your comments echo all the same feelings I've always had about this song. Since I heard it for the first time in 1971. I've heard in years since that it was inspired by the band's mutual obsession with Joni Mitchell.

One of the big reasons that Robert Plant was able to have a successful solo career after 1980, when he very deliberately tried to tone down the “rock god” image he had crafted for Zeppelin, is that his voice, in addition to the power, can be emotive as hell. It can be as soft as a feather, and delicate. As he has gotten older, he has used that side of his voice to great effect, and has produced some gorgeous music. You are a young man (true confession, I am Plants age) but you’re not just wanting the hard rock only, but the full spectrum of music. This channel is not the appropriate place for Plants later music, but you might wish to privately do some sampling of his 10 or so solo albums he’s done over the last 40 years. There are many jewels there.

Probably their best set ever was the 1970 Royal Albert Hall show. You should check out How Many More Times,” and also the encore from that concert, it is amazing. You should also check out Cream. If John Paul Jones is the #1 bass player, then Jack Bruce from Cream is #1b, same goes for the drummer Ginger Baker, and of course there is Eric Clapton too. Some starters would be the live versions of “Spoonful” and “Tales of Brave Ulysses” (the live version of which is not on CZcams, but is by far better than the studio version). They have a lot of great ones like Zeppelin, but are more bluesy.

Yes, "In my time of dying and "Trampled Underfoot" from the same concert I believe are musts. They are most definitely not calm with those two songs. In my time of dying is an old blues song from the deep south about a mans journey into heaven. Page plays an amazing slide guitar the entire song. Trampled Underfoot is a remake of the old Robert Johnson tune from the 20's or 30's called "Terrapin Blues." It's about comparing a woman's body to car parts. It is super funky and an amazing song. If not the same concert they are both on the same dvd as this. Also the other two acoustic songs that were a part of this set are amazing as well.
