- My reaction to Led Zeppelin's magnum opus "Stairway To Heaven" live from Madison Square Garden in 1973.

They have complete command because they're not just good, they're gifted. They feel the music in their souls and that can't be learned. That they found each other and realized they were on the same musical "wave length" was a blessing to us all. Plant is able to stand up there at the young age of 23 with such command because he knows that he just needs to open his mouth and his gift will flow out, and his band mates are right there with him. This is why they can improvise so well. If any one of them goes off, typically Page, the others can follow along with ease because they "get" each other. Individually, they're gifted musicians. Together, they're a fricking force.
What I love about this band is that Plant isn’t just the lead singer, his voice is another instrument tuned to the other instruments.
Robert plant wrote these lyrics in one go with Jimmy page noodling the melody on the guitar. Total stream of consciousness. Pure poetry.

I wish you (and my 21 year old music freak son) could also! I saw them in 1977, and compared to every other band I had seen they were light years ahead of all of them. But everybody that saw them between 1969 and 1973 still claims that they were even better.
They originally wrote it as a sort of folk song and it turned into this magic. No wonder you feel what you feel. I grew up on this and it never leaves you.

And yeah, they somehow managed to invoke the exact spirit of The Lord of the Rings in the song, especially with the lines "there's a feeling I get when I look to the West / and my spirit is crying for leaving". Chills every single time. And Robert Plant himself is like a golden king of the faerie, only a crown of flowers is missing.

@@emmanuelflores9983 Zeppp has 3 songs with Lord of the Rings references but ironically Stairway is not one of them. The three songs are "Ramble On" The Battle of Evermore" and "Misty Mountain Hop."

Didn't realize one of the guitars had 12 strings until later in the video! Luckily I captured my genuine moment of realization at 11:31.
Absolutely, the Earls Court performance of In My Time Of Dying is superb. BUT there are two versions out there. Be certain to pick the 12 minute version and not the 7 minute version, as it cuts it in half.

BTW, although not all lyrics of a songwriter are autobiographical, the lines here .....”there’s a feeling I get, when I look to the west and my spirit is crying for leaving” definitely are. He looked to the west, to the sea, for solace. And his entire life has been that if an extraordinarily gifted, creative and restless spirit. A blessing for us, and sometimes a great burden for himself.

I was at the 1977 song remains the same tour and i havent been right since Madison Square Garden, is the ultimate concert venue i was 13 yrs old then , went out and bought a les paul custom the next day !! Been playing ever since !!!!

Love your reactions. It's like you were sitting in my room with my friends back in the day when we'd gush on and on about Zeppelin.
In the late 60s, through the 70s, into the 80s, we had so many great bands, it's hard to remember many of them. No one wants to pay the price of greatness anymore, so they just keep lowering the bar. Radio in the day, used to have the top 500 songs or some number, of all time. It usually played over New Years Weekend. In many of them, year in and year out, this was the number one song of all time.Thanks.

I know these are from 3 years ago, I looked & didn’t see many Led Zeppelin songs you did. I’d suggest also from Madison Square Garden (1973), Since I’ve Been Loving You, my & many others is their best live. It’s a beautiful soulful Bluesy song, you can see & feel the passion pouring from their souls. Another great song is In The Evening live at Knebworth, (1979). Thank you, & I hope you get some more Led out.
I wonder which live performance will be next 🤔 I'm guessing No Quarter, which is very enjoyable . Just remember live Dazed and Confused is 28 minutes long which is a must see Jimmy is mind blowing.
It is the greatest solo of all time. It’s the guitar solo Beethoven would have written had he been born in modern times. It’s like a song of its own with a dedicated intro and outro and repeating phrases which act like a chorus. It’s the best 5 minutes in rock history
Wow man you are spoiling us, another MSG reaction! I love it. I actually heard this version before the album, so for me THIS is the definitive version. I have listened to that solo at least 50 times... this year! It is a song of hope, and that solo is so amazing, it’s beyond our spoken languages, beyond our politics... anyone can feel it, anyone can understand that language.

"Stairway To Heaven" is more than THE antheme of the whole rock history, is THE revelation at all. You have given them your soul and they will never give it you back.
I got this DVD 20 years ago watched it too many times back when there was not internet lol. Great times though.
We had so many talented groups in the 70's, many concerts were all day affairs with multiple bands performing, as many as 7, and were festival seating! There's nothing like seeing these bands perform live, you had to be exceptional back then to make it or be successful. We were so spoiled with awesome music.

Dude, you just witnessed greatness. Zeppelin were at their performing peak in 1973 (in my humble opinion) and this tour more than any other seemed to highlight their unique qualities and their one-ness with a specific song and moment in time. Page's solo's were confident, robust and inspired. Plant came into his own and developed a stage presence, persona and bravado that generations of rock singers would try and emulate and Bonham was staggering. Listen to the second part of the solo and you can hear a counter-beat from Bonham that sounds like an army marching into battle; so good. I think this version is actually better than the studio version because you can hear the crowd and there's an electricity in the air and they are on the brink of exploding into pure transcendence at any moment. The studio version (while great) feels a little flat sometimes. I can't say enough about this song. I've literally heard it a thousand times and yet I still get goose-bumps hearing it again. This song makes you glad to be alive!

That Guitar was designed by Jimmy Page and was one of a kind and built specifically so he could play Stairway live.
Jimmy didn't design it. The Gibson ES-1275 at one time discontinued from production. But at Page asked Gibson to make a few and production startef back up

You said it right, this IS, one of the best Guitar solos, of all time. Gibson SG Double Neck, The SONG, The venue, The Time and last but not least, JIMMY PAGE. This truly has it all. 12 strings give that FULL sound, on a guitar. Six string more individual string sound, for soloing. Jimmy started doing session work and grew (1963-67). He is the maestro, of this orchestra. This solo, absolutely, gets me EVERY time! Technically, You just don't see, TALENT, like this, often, I am glad to see another Zep fan, joining the Family. Great Work on your immersion. As a newer viewer, you seem very genuine, keep it up!

Zeppelin were renowned for 3 1/2 hour concerts, no opening act, no intermission...and all that for like 10 bucks a seat back in the 70's

I think it was not so long before this that Plant had an operation for nodes or something, but the only instance of real alteration on record I can think of is on 'The Song Remains the Same' - when the whole thing was slightly speeded up. Not an uncommon trick, but it did lend a 'helium' tone to his already high tenor.
The 12 string is used for the acoustic guitar portion of the song, and the six string is used when he goes into his solo. They are set to different keys....different tunings. Otherwise, you’d have to have two guitarists to do this song, or stop and change guitars in the middle. When, not if, you watch the highly famous version done by Heart at The Kennedy Center in 2012, with Nancy Wilson killing the vocals,....you have Ann Wilson on the acoustic guitar and a Superb studio guitarist on the electric guitar solo. Page also had a three necked guitar made for himself. The top neck was a mandolin. He used it for The Battle Of Evermore during the Plant/Page 1995 No Quarter Tour. You see, my friend, how deep this rabbit hole is now?
Zoe YING you sound more knowledgeable than I, so I will defer to you. I have heard Jimmy in interviews explain why he used double-necked guitars...that, no, it wasn’t for dramatic effect, but because of different tunings. He was speaking in general terms, so I do not know the specifics of Stairway. I had assumed it was for the same reason.......but if you have heard him say otherwise, then I humbly stand corrected. And thank you for correcting me. These details are important when it comes to this legendary band.

1st : That is not a flute, but the JPJ on the Key.
2nd: The reason Page is playing the double neck guitar is due to the order of the songs they wereplaying during that era, it was easier for him not having to switch guitars between songs, like for example in the same gig he played TSRTS and finished non stop to The Rain song, from the 12 string neck to the 6 strings.
3rd: Starway is the most popular but is not their M. opus according to the band members, Kashmir is!!

Having done this, you MUST watch the Kennedy Center Honors version of Stairway as done by Ann and Nancy Wilson + Jason Bonham. Also, the live versions ofAchilles Last Stand and Nobody's Fault But Mine are must watch/listen!

You need to see No Quarter from this film, staggering guitar solo, Also In My Time Of Dying, from Earls Court 1975 is a brilliant live performance....
This particular live performance is my favorite performance of all time by any artist/group. Thanks for reacting to it. For studio song I suggest you to react to The Rover of The physical graffiti album and for the song I would suggest No Quarter live performance. There you will see the John Paul Jones owning the song.
Emanuel you easily have some of the best reactions on CZcams. Just please react to How Many More Times it’s seriously mind blowing how underrated it is. Also the only good quality live versions are the 69 Denmark which is arguably one of their worse performances of it but there video of it and Robert sounds pretty good on it. Then theres the 70 at RAH which is one their best but it’s for some reason split up into two parts on CZcams and there’s the bootlegs with 69 at Lewisville which has very very good sound quality and there’s 68 at Spokane and that’s easily Robert Plants best vocal performances of all time but the sound quality is pretty bad for the bass.

You wondered what point these guys slow down. After John Bonham died in 1980, the band broke up. They each did their own thing and came back to play together as Led Zeppelin, very very few times since. But check out the link below- 34 yrs after this MSG concert, they got together for a reunion concert in 2007 at the O2 Arena with John's son Jason on drums. The entire concert is fabulous. BTW, Page plays a 1959’ Gibson Les Paul mostly. Page bought it in 1969 from Joe Walsh. They say it’s worth $ 3,000,000.00 dollars 💵
You might consider reacting to “Kashmir “ and “Achilles Last Stand”, both performed at Knebworth in 1979, and done very well. Bonzo’s drum fills and overall performance on both of these songs is stellar. Roberts vocals are really good, and Jimmy isn’t so bad either. I feel like I’m leaving out Jonesy, but he is the backbone of everything.
Anita Paulus Achilles Last Stand from that performance is breathtaking. Kashmir is also excellent, but a almost prefer the version from their reunion concert in 2007...

Listen to studio solo , clear, bright and ringing played on a Fender Telecaster. Live version darker, grungier huskier distorted played on a Gibson SG. Fender single coil pick ups. Gibson humbucker or P90 style pickups.
Loving your reactions 👍🏼 Given where you are now in your led zep journey, you should check out the cover of Stairway to Heaven performed by Heart, in front of the surviving Led Zep members at the Kennedy Centre. It's a really good version that the band enjoyed and there was a lot of emotion behind the surprise drummer who played with Heart. Look for the certain with the most views on CZcams or the official one from the Kennedy Centre channel.
The thing to understand about Led Zeppelin is there is not a lot of footage of them playing live. They did a few TV appearances early on in 1969-1970. There's a couple Earl's Court concerts. The Song Remains The Same filmed at Madison Square Garden in '73. Knebworth in 1979. A smattering of performances filmed on 8mm fan cameras.
The band embraced the philosophy of making fans pay to come see them live. They did little TV; sparse interviews (they had an adversarial relationship with music critics & journalists). All of that contributed to a mystique about the group that still persists to this day.
They were arguably the biggest rock band in the world circa 1975; then a string of tragedies sidetracked them. Singer Robert Plant and his family were in a car accident in '75. Plant's son tragically died from a virus in '77. Drummer John Bonham dying in 1980 ended the band.
They have only reunited 4 times as Led Zeppelin in the 40 years since.
John Petrie and they were pretty unhappy about the first three, which is why they were DAMNED sure that the 2007 performance was going to be superb. They set out to show the world, one last time, WHY they had been the best rock band in the world. And they did.
Absolutely. The Celebration Day concert was a tremendous show. If they never play again it's a triumphant note to end on.
An adversarial relationship with critic's and journalist you say? I'm intrigued by this. Adds an entirely new layer to the mystique of this band. And my goodness, hearing about those tragedies is heartbreaking. Some very saddening and unfortunate events.
John Petrie also, Emmanuel, so much of the joy that they all started out with of playing together.....the chemistry, the connection onstage of Page and Plant which was remArkable and brought so much pleasure was compromised as Jimmy slipped ever deeper into heroin addition, which affected his playing and which broke the bond with Plant. When Roberts beautiful little boy died at age 5, in Q1977, it was Bonzo his best friend, who helped him through his staggering loss, and convinced him to stay with the band. Jimmy started doing better, and by 1979 and 80 they were getting ready to tour again. And then Bonzo drank himself into unconsciousness and died. Robert was shattered, and it was he and his wife who did the grim task of telling young Jason that his father had died. You see? So much back story to these men. They don’t see each other much anymore, which makes me sad, but I know that their mutual respect goes deep....that they were never so happy as when they shared a stage together, and that, at their core, there is a deep affection, even love, between them still.
YeH, I once heard Plant, during a group press conference for The release of Celebration Day in 2012,call a reporter a schmuck. Plant was always the most outspoken. The reporter had asked a rather insulting question and Plant wasn’t having any of it. But in many interviews I’ve watched, Robert could be a true charmer....

The upper 12 string guitar is for RIFTING while the lower 6 string is for SOLO. “Stairway to Heaven” is divided into 3 parts if you listen to the studio version first you can compare it to the live version
You can live in it, just close your eyes and listen. They did have off nights just like other mortals, haha! There are some bootlegs that weren't such great nights, but they are forgiven. That guitar was especially made for Jimmy.

@@emmanuelflores9983 you can listen to zep tracks dozens of times and STILL hear something you havny heard before. They had soooo much depth and subtlety texture behind the atom splitting power.
Ps all 4 were incredible musicians they really were equals.
Every member had moments to shine and they had no egos. They never tried to upstage 1 another like some other bands did. They all played for the band. That's why they are so in sync all the time.
They would jam out constantly live and then effortlessly drop back in to a song

The HTWWW bootleg has some of the beat live recordings in e mainstream - there are many lesser known bootlegs not available on CZcams that render this as middle of the road

The original recording intro was done on a 6 string acoustic
Using the12 string helped reproduce a clean yet bigger or full sound .. if u notice he only uses the 6 string for the intro and the solo and 12 string is used throughout the verses and the outro
On TSRTS/Rain song he uses the 12 string for the big full sound on the song remains the same and the 6 string is tuned to an alternate tuning (Csus for you musicians or guitarists) is used for the rain song
After those two songs the roadies retuned the 6 string for stairway (this song) to standard tuning
You may also notice the rain song is done in a different key than the studio version
Studio version is played in open Csus (key of C), while they live versions are tuned down to A (a step and a half lower than the studio).
If u Listen to them one after another you shouldn’t have a hard time noticing
Listen to the versions done in the early 90s by Page and Plant with the late great Tommy Lee on drums - acoustic versions with an Egyptian orchestra backing them on some of the popular versions on CZcams - amazing stuff those acoustic renditions were phenomenal
Robert plant was quoted saying they should have originally done the rain song as an acoustic

So a 12 string guitar actually plays the same as a 6 string. What it is is each string has a brother string extremely close to it that is an octave higher, So when you push the note down you're actually hitting both strings with one finger. so it produces the same note but The low octave and high octave at onceso you get that cool phasing sound that only 12 strain gives you but it's the same exact finger positions and everything it's not like a different beast altogether. But on the recording of stairway Jimmy uses a 12 string acoustic and he placed 6 string for other parts and he needed a guitar that could do both live so he got the double neck. As an added bonus because Jimmy sometimes uses different tunings on his guitars on a song like the rain song the bottom neck is tuned differently where is the top neck is tuned normally so he can play the song remains the same which is in normal tuning and then switch to the bottom which has a different tuning for the rain so so it's an extremely versatile way to have a live guitar set up.
Another influential band on hard rock (although I would say not as influential as Led Zeppelin) is AC/DC. I would suggest listening to Back in Black....

That is a Gibson dual guitar made for Jimmy page to his specifications, so he could play Stairway to Heaven Live on stage. In studio I guess he played two different guitars and switched back and forth when they layered in the tracks. The company (Gibson) was concerned that the guitar would be too unwieldy and heavy to play on stage. Never bet against a master guitarist when it comes to epic solos live on stage.
