IIRC there was some research that found out people who swear are in general more honest. Because everyone gets emotional about something at some point, and those that express that with swearing are honestly speaking their mind. Whilst those that intentionally do not swear are also likely to be less forward about voicing their opinion in general, potentially leading to dishonest (not necessarily malicious, mind you) statements.

In this case, we don't have the intention, we don't know who, if anyone at all, it was directed too.
The fundamental flaw is already discussed in the video at 01:00. The chat filters are on by default for everyone. Players who choose to disable the filter are acknowledging their willingness to see potentially offensive content, including profanity. In this scenario, the responsibility for encountering profanity shifts to the player who disabled the filter.

These companies do not give a fuck about you as an individual player. Played PSO2 when it got released like an insane person, had every class maxed out, around 1700 hours. Had a guy raging on chat on an seasonal raid event, i got tired of reading his crap and wrote "Are you high on estrogen or what?". Banned for life after that. Had around 800 dollars invested into the game and obviously ticket was useless, machine generated responses and the actual human response just said that the ban stands for life. But you know once i got banned from it, i started investing those hours into my PhD and personal life, so i basically got married, got a great job and hopefully on route to become a gamer father. I just do not play huge time investing games anymore. Therefore i am now Hell Commander of SES Guardian of Family Values.

I had this Overwatch account from 2016, with some rare skins and all the MVP Skins. Always participated in events and grinded for Event skins. I played in OD, so I got my fair share of Esport pro limited-edition, sprays, and player icons. I've been playing consistently since 2016, never took a break, always been "loyal." Completed all the battle passes in Overwatch 2. It was a T500 account from Season 27 in Overwatch 1 to Season 8 in Overwatch 2, never been temp banned before, never been text muted troughout all the years.
I've always been positive in-game, not yelling or cursing at my teammates. Always promoted PMA PMA PMA. If I do rage, it's not even in the mic.
But then, in December, I was playing in a PcBang in Korea. Our Reinhardt threw the game because he couldn't push through on Numbani. He sat in the cafe at the start of the attacker's spawn. I typed in team chat, "Man, actual little kid behavior." And then this guy started calling me a filthy American (I'm Dutch ;-;), yelling at me, calling me a dog. I left the voice channel, muted the text channel, and reported him.
The next day, I woke up to an email from Blizzard. My Overwatch account has been permanently banned for toxic behavior, going against their rules about positive communication. I appealed it, but they said my "man, actual little kid behavior" comment wasn't in line with what they stand for, so my account stays banned.

But that still doesn't apply to a business. And look, I like the quote. And I 100% agree that Blizzard is flat out wrong here.
But here the quote just doesn't fit the situation even in the most generous interpretation of its meaning. Businesses do not provide liberty, and the players are not asking to give up liberty for safety - the business is just denying players the choice entirely, despite giving the illusion of choice through a profanity filter. It's just not the same situation. Blizzard are definitely wrong, and their actions subverting choice, but liberty and safety are not the crux here.

Asmon with an incredibly nuanced and level headed take as usual.
I agree that banning a player for low tier profanity (non racial slurs) when the game allows the words to be typed, and also has a profanity filter that a player needs to opt in to, is ridiculous.
I agree that if the above is true, then a player should not get banned for using profanity in a manner that is not harrasminf another player. For example, saying “fuck yeah”, or “what the fuck?”. This is using profanity but I’m a context that is not harassment. This is where an actual person would need to review the report and determine if it is just a nuetra use of low tier profanity, or if it is cleary harassinf other players; for example “fuck you, you shitty fuck”. In this case the profanity isn’t even the problem. It is the context of harassment.
I also agree that this 22 year old kid is immature and entitled. He has been banned multiple times in the past for the same verbiage. He knows the rules, however silly the rules are. If he cares so much about playing the game professionally then he should have been more adult about it. There is a reason you don’t see professional athletes verbally harassing each other. They would get punished by the organization. It’s that simple.
Feel bad for the kid that he got banned at an important time in his “gaming career”. But also, I don’t feel bad for him at all. Needs to grow up and take accountability for his actions. This could be the best thing that ever happens to him.
I don’t believe blizzard should reverse the ban. It would be more damaging to their reputation that the ban itself.
I don’t think anyone besides the extremely niche professional overwatch community cares about this.
