TOTALED 1985 Toyota MR2 - WILL IT DRIVE? Can We Fix it?

  • We head to Compton, Los Angeles to buy an absolutely wrecked 1985 Toyota MR2 (AW11) for $1000. We budgeted $1000 to fix it ourselves, and try and sell it for a profit! The Toyota MR2 is a legendary mid-engine car, and one of the best driving bargains one can have. The excellent 4AGE engine, found in the AE86, is what powers this little rear wheel drive pocket rocket. Hope you all enjoy!

@@judosailor all depends on the state/province and if they have safety requirements as others posted. PA you need Doors if you don't have a 6" will.
The original CJ, doors were completely optional so if you didn't have a hard top you didn't have doors. Some places you can remove doors, some you can't, some you can as long as you have replacement side mirrors like my area as long as you have one mirror that can see back 200yards (which the rear view mirror fits)
A lot of cars if you remove the doors would fail a safety inspection if it stipulates anything about undermining structural integrity as manufacturers use the doors as part of it.

That last monologue made me miss my S30z. Rust holes all over the floor just repaired with rubber bungs, Radio that doesnt work, no AC, Rock hard suspension with geometry that PULLs towards the potholes, Fuel economy about as thirsty as a modern day LS V8.... BUT, that thing when you drive it, is like nothing else - its so bloody engaging that i can feel the car going over a cigarette butt on the ground, I know exactly which tyre is gripping. The induction sound, with the Triple Mikuni setup, you have to hear it to believe it. You're right on the money - its a sensory experience, these vintage Japanese cars, compared to now, when everything just feels..... clinical.

This was a truly great video; I am only slightly biased. In 1979, I bought a used in great shape Fiat X1/9, which is very similar with the mid engine layout AND it had a removable roof. Then I purchased a 1987 Toyota Corolla FX-16 which is basically the hatchback version of the MR-2 with the same 4A-GE 16v engine mounted transversely in the front (conventionally, rather than mid). It had the same suspension and handling, was only slightly heavier, had a full back seat and a roomy hatch and an electric sunroof, and had fixed headlights. (same white paint and rims). I replaced the engine with a Japanese import replacement. In japan they have VERY strict rules and you only can run an engine for like 75K miles, so they R&R them and then ship used ones by the container to the USA where they sell them cheap. It was a great car. I was the 2nd owner and got it in good shape and maintained it well. When I bought it, I purchased the OEM Toyota factory service manual which was dual-use for the MR-2, so besides the mid engine, it was pretty identical, which is indispensable.
Good job Winston for the elementary narration for introductory mechanics; well explained. Also I really enjoyed the Toyota Kirobo with a serious attitude; we need more of him or his friends (to keep you guys in line :-) And Matthew, good reflections on the past you convey at the end. Really glad you have taught me so much about China, especially since we are now USC after the election :-O

The fact that you are starting with a platform you are familiar with, I say your goal is an obtainable one. Good luck 🍀

Winston, in case it was not already brought to your attention. Check your local harbor freight stores for inexpensive tools.

13:36 looks like your coolant reservoir has a big hold melted in it bottom right

You can use a plastic pop bottle for coolant overflow.

One safety suggestion I can offer when dealing with batteries Winston. Make a solution of baking soda and water and put in a sprayer. The solution will neutralize the acid on the terminals.

C-Milk as someone who loves the feeling you described in the end of the video I challenge you to take a drive in a newer MX-5 RF. I think that you'll find as I did it's kind of the best of both worlds.

Winston, I only JUST realized you've been saying Auto-Reilly's... Although I'm very much comfortable owning dumbass moves, this is one of the worst.

I think that joke went over your head a bit. He mixes the two to refer to "your general auto parts store".
But I agree, after a few times it starts to get a bit... well, overused.

In 1998, I had one of these as a loaner while a transmission shop worked on my car. It drove OK but absolutely reaked of gas inside so there must have been a leak somewhere.

Damn you went to Compton!? For Winston, coming from South Africa, he is no doubt familiar with the sites and smells and this must have reminded him of home, but the other guy I can't picture him being comfortable and wanting to call his parents.
