- SORRY FOR THE LONG DELAY! We have been slammed with FD, Moving, and The School of Drift.
This is How to Drift a Mid Engine car. Its always been a weird dream of mine to build a simple MR car and the MR2 is certainly one of the lowest cost options. If you're interested in the build itself checkout the other two build videos on the channel.
Big ups to K&N for stepping up and helping us with this project, go give them some love so we can do more of these things! - Auta a dopravní prostředky
6 months later ive been waiting for this for so long

This Video made me smile a lot. I bet this would freak out my mom tho because until now I've told her that you can't drift an MR2 since they're mid engine because I don't want her to be worried lol
I actually own a 1985 ,aw-11 mr-2. It's so nice to see that my car is capable of drift
Just bought one my self !
@@wallyarreaga5050 I'm jealous
Trading my first gen rx7 for an 86 mr2 tomorrow
Here I am in the dark corner with a Fiero 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I want either an aw-11 or an SW-20 one day but prices are going up up up the longer i wait
Yo Chelsea, sw20 lower arms bolt straight on! Theyre 20mm longer
Damn, that would have been cool to know hahaha
@@chelseadenofa oh man it would have been good to tell you.
Sw20 lower front control arms with aw11 manual rack spacers combo add both track width and an extra turn of steering angle and camber. Very common mod in the aw11 community
@@PeterXChhanX Extending the control arms without also extending the actual tie rod probably results in some intense bump steer though?
@@traxxasslash95 the rack spacer is a bolt-on extender of the toe rods. Basically it goes onto the rack that goes inside the casing and widens the mounting area where the inner toe rod goes into. It corrects the extra width of the control arm to tie rod length ratio. And since it goes on the INSIDE ot allows the rack to turn just a bit more before bottoming out from the joint of the inner tie rod
@@PeterXChhanX With modified knuckles it's better to go with an offset rack spacer which basically offset the tie rod balljoint forward (or backwards depending on vehicle). It will, just like the rack spacer extend the width of the tie rod, but instead of providing additional lock for the rack, it will give the tie rods a straighter angle at full lock to reduce binding at full lock.
These cars are a ton of fun. I use mine for rallycross with a V6, and agree, keep in the throttle and it won't snap on you. I'd love to explore what you did on the knuckles to increase angle, which would also increase steering response. The QUAIFFE quick steer rack is a great investment. It took a lot of the dead area in the center wheel out of my car.
Thank you so much for clearing that up about snap oversteer. I daily my SW20 and every once in a while someone is like "wont it snap oversteer when ur in a corner???". Yeah it will, but only if you drive it like a moron and don´t know what you´re doing. If you can leave the throttle and steering inputs smooth and not abrupt, MRs are a charm to drive, even fast. Just don´t step on the brakes mid corner (what you shouldn´t really do in any car) and it will hold the line like a champ.
Honestly, only the 1990-92 model years have that problem. They fixed it in the 93
Braking mid corner CAN be done in some cars… If you know how to do it and why. On FWD cars it’s not that bad… Left foot breaking especially
@@Shalbyder oh absolutely agree, as soon as you leave tarmac and go for gravel roads it becomes a helpful tool. When I had FWD car it even saved my ass a couple of times to get that extra grip on the front wheels mid corner. Is it faster? No. Possible and useful in certain cases. Absolutely.
@@lefunghi6151 yes it’s useful indeed. Not fast though lmao. But you know everything in a car which is wrong can technically be used sometimes to be good I think…
Even on tarmac breaking mid corner with my FWD saved my ass couple times from understeer, as oversteer in an FWD car if done purposely is in my opinion way less dangerous then that ultra bad understeer.
This is such a blessed video. It's good to see someone shredding in an MR2
That dry rotted ass front brake line lol. Also, good idea on the in-helmet mic during those outside shots. It really works well
Goodridge should still make off the shelf braided lines to suit the AW11. I think mine cost me about $130AUD shipped from the UK back in 2011. You'll get much nicer pedal feel, as well as being safer. Also consider a Brake bias valve to limit the front circuit to stop the fronts locking up so early.
So cool that you're drifting a Ferrari! xD
Elliot Rodger that and also mr2s are famous for copying Ferrari designs
This video sealed it for me. I’m going to take my mr2 to a drifting event!!
Be careful! The sw20 is no drift car hahaha!! Your swap is lighter in the rear and has plenty of power so that's good. Just please don't break your unicorn car!!
Honestly... maybe just send it.. because that'd be awesome!
Hunter Altman I actually live about 30 minutes away from the track that Chelsea Denofa is driving and have driven it before, so I’m probably going to send it😂
@@saladbar21 did u ever get your sw20 sideways?? If so how'd it perform??
@@saladbar21 we need to know!
The snap oversteer rumors are supposedly because the '85-'86 models have a rear sway bar and the '87-'89's don't, as well as them beefing up the front swaybar after that. The '87+'s aren't supposed to have the mounts for the end links on the strut towers (or when they do, they only have one side and not the other) but during the transition in '87 from the MK1A to the MK1B toyota mixed and matched alot of parts, so on the '87 cars you end up with a lot of weird combinations. Mine is an '87 and i got lucky, it has both the mounts so i'm planning on putting a rear on, possibly even disconnecting the front whenever i want to drift. Maybe you could try that if you end up needing a little more bite out of the front?
I actually removed the front bar and left the rear bar lol.
@@chelseadenofa Oh man, that's worrying lol
@@chelseadenofa I just got a 86 and both the sway bars were off. I only had rear end links so i have just been driving around with only the rear, now thinking about doing something about the steering angle and sending it to a drift event with the stock na 4ge and stock suspension to see how it handles. I am not really a drifter just like mountain drives and autocross, but i can tell this car wants to be sideways
3:03 no Bunta put in a 20V Silvertop race engine from a Group A racecar
Ahhh got it. Black top is better than a regular silver top tho haha.
@@chelseadenofa Yep, but the silvertop is better for boosting since it has a little less compression. You can make both work with turbos tho ;)
@@chelseadenofa on paper it is but where I'm from they are fairly equal. I have owned all oem variations
What I was hoping to hear, and maybe I missed it:
What is the specific technique for keeping a mid engine car drifting versus front engined? The whole point of everyone using front engine is that it's seemingly a lot easier to control and more natural (possibly just flat out better). But I was told there was a technique needed for mid engine cars specifically that isn't needed as much for front engine.
It's rad to see some one else shredding in an mr2. I taught myself how to drift in a 5sfe sw20 (na 125ish hp on a good day?) Lol winter snow and rain definitely helps. Everyone swore up and down that it wasn't doable. Especially with an open diff, but every other car I've driven after that has been cake to drive. Many near death experiences to be had for sure, but hella stoked to see this! 🤙
This is encouraging, I've considered trying to drift my beetle, someone has just started putting together events in my area and I've got a spare diff to weld. And plenty of steering angle.
this video makes me so happy. It's so satisfying for a car guy.
The steering rack in these cars is compatible with an ae71/ae86 rack. It's a common swap for guys who like manual steering into their corollas. If you want power steering, chances are a power steering rack from an ae71/ae86 would bolt in.
You explained how the car drives in low grip scenarios perfectly. I drive a '87 MR2 in rallycross and it's hard to put into words how it feels. In 3 years of events I've only looped it once its not unmanageable. It is easy to not setup properly and just push losing time but when you get it right the car just dances on course
These cars are so much fun to drive in the snow too, it was a great learning experience the first winter I drove mine.
Instead of complaining about the delay just be excited they came back with a freaking hilariously awesome video like this
This reminds me of something you'd see at a CARBOY drift event in the early 90's haha, they used to be pretty popular in Japan. It's sad that no one uses them anymore!
He's back. The Peoples Champ
I think the hardest Thing with drifting an MR would be following in tandem as MR cars don’t like to slow down mid corner. So if the leader slows abruptly you’re kinda screwed.
This is how real drift cars are anyways
I used to have a 86 aw11 with a red top 4age 3 rib ran a techno toy itb adapter with silver top trottlebodys used a megasquirt ecu and coverted to map system control fun car supper revy
Man, I miss my AW11 so much. Such a cool looking car. Maybe throw a small eBay turbo and a megasquirt on it?? Or you can 3SGTE swap it and make around 250whp. Either way, awesome video and stellar driving my guy.
Simple is best
Just picked up an AW11a for $500, very excited to start working on it.
Wanting to see more MR2 vids! I just got a major interest in these cars There's not many vids on these cars, other than high hp drag racing. I currently have a e36, but I'm leaning hard on wanting to take on a Spyder project!!
The snap oversteer is trailing throttle oversteer, it's so common because people get scared and let off the gas to slow down
My first car was a AW11 MR2. So much fun I miss that car. I learned how to drive stick and it was the first car I ever drifted in.
Snap oversteer is just what you think it’s not.
In a FR layout you let off the throttle to draw out the donut/slide. In a MR layout it does the opposite. To any driver who doesn’t that would cause the vehicle to oversteer further or pendulum over when trying to recover from an oversteer situation.
ChelSHE with the fancy editing on this one I was digging the picture in picture and helmet audio. The mr2 is definitely a ripper!
Just came across this video
Been lurking your videos for close to two years now and owned an AE86 over 15 years of my life so to see you drift midship bt20v had me by surprise..
You make it look so easy!!
my trick was always to just lift off while turning to get the rear end out, and then give gas to push it out more, and get the front end in more, ive only ever driven one of these, but man i want one, its a literal oversteer machine.
Maybe the C60 6 speed trans might help, it has a 4.5 final and they came with the manual Black Top 20v. You might get one for cheap from someone doing a 20v swap in their hachi though👍🏽
Love the build! Always wanted to play with an AW11 so this vid was awesome to watch so thank you for that 🙌🏾👌🏽
Yes it would!
I hear a few people have had luck with yaris electric power steering racks in the aw11
Now I want a first gen mr2 but not for drift just a street car.
3rd gen is wider and newer and has more power. Check out togue time’s videos
@@ErikSeastead IIRC it is a little bit lighter too.

I daily drive an SC aw do it man I love my car, bought a second NA to build a drift car last year and Chelsea beat me too it lol. Now I've got a blueprint at least and he answered a million questions for me with this vid
It’s funny how one clip from Japan changes whole mindset on car.
Absolutely amazing video still! 🔥 love how it sounds 😋
Welcome back! Been waiting for this notification 🤙🏻
Best MR2 drifting I’ve ever seen!
Quaife makes a quick ratio rack for these. 2.5 lock to lock. You can also add rack spacers from techno toy tuning too. Techno toy tuning has tons of suspension stuff for Aw11!
Yea man. Modded knuckles are way better tho
sick, reminds me of 80s rally. mudflaps, bigger tires??
Ayy! So cool to see you drifting an MR2, it's fun isn't it!?
My channel has quite a few videos of me drifting my MR2 Spyder (lsd, K20, hydro, stock angle)
Love ya Chelsea Denofe! Love your low dollar builds and the love u have for the drift community. Keep up the great content

Thx alot man! Im into building a midengined honda delsol, soooo this vidéo make me smile big time 🤘
Awesome video! Just picked up a aw11 and currently swapping a 2zzge and c60 transmission. It makes me think based on your video it will be the perfect drift swap. The motor gives a good 200 hp stock and the c60 is a 6 speed with shorter gears to enable more 2nd gear drifts. To me it's the more modern setup that still is well balanced for the aw11 chassis. I'm definitely taking notes on your drift setup. Thanks for the video! Maybe I'll take off my widebody and give the timeattack car some sliding! :)
Chelsea, forget all that formula D top level racing crap ... stay on CZcams and make more videos for us!
formula d pays the bills
Nah it doesn’t pay bills it gives me the platform to do this stuff
Been waiting a while for this, definitely worth it though! One run in and you were like a kid in a candy store lol
Yo, i emailed Techno Toy Tuning a while back about dual caliper brackets on my AW11 and they said if 10 people total were interested they'd do a limited run. Anybody interested?
I would be interested as I currently have my e-brake in line.
@@Krautastic Awesome, i've posted basically everywhere i can think of so hopefully we can get 8 more people on board. And this should go without saying but i'm gonna say it anyway in case you or anyone else might have doubts; everyone would deal with T3 directly, nothing goes through me in any way, shape, or form. I just decided to message them because they already made them for the AE86's and that's what they told me lol
I own one, how do I participate
@@DiscipleofChrist_ I'm not exactly sure yet, i've been wondering myself how this will actually go down. I've just assumed that once we have 10 people together i'll email them back or we'll all email them individually and they'll either make a listing for it. My conversation with them was literally verbatim as follows;
Me: "I know you guys probably don't have alot of demand for these but I was curious if there were the possibility of either making some one off dual caliper brackets for the AW11 MR2 (I'd be willing to pay whatever it costs as long as its not completely unreasonable), or if you guys had any advice to give on modding the AE86 brackets to fit on the AW11, if thats even a possibility?"
Techno Toy Tuning: "I'm sorry, this is not something we could do. If you can find 10 people that wanted this, I would be interested in making a small batch. The MR2 and AE86 are completely different in design, so nothing can be adapted over. It would need to be a from scratch new design."
21:23 *nani,kansei dorifto?!*
You have great driving skills and a great car :D
Good luck for the future
Awesome to see ya upload again, bloody missed ya!
This is sick. Give this thing an S252-SXE with a twin-scroll housing and factory "semi-forged" pistons. Or a built N/A K-24 swap, lol.
Ohhh wow! finally knockin the dust off your channel. Missed you brotha!
The only times i've had the rear end come around unexpectedly was in the wet.
I have this AW11 as well, and in the wet it is really fun to see where the limits are. Let it break out a little bit.
@@roland9367 Last time I spun was at a track day and I let the clutch out too fast shifting down into 2nd and it locked up a rear wheel. Around town in the rain is lots of fun for sure.
@@cGreer20 Yes I used to do that on the track for a tight corner. Let the clutch go when turning in 2nd, so that the back kicks out and you van turn in faster.
I think it should also be a good way to start a drift. But if it's not raining, you hardly have enough power, or to much grip.
+1
Did you build the handbrake base yourself? The bit the master cylinder bolts to? Or can you buy that
Levelride makes it
Build that engine, my dude.
Currently trying to build my 3rd gen MR2 for drifting, my favorite drifter using an MR2 of all cars, insane!! 😯😯
Hey man good job! Love seeing people proving that mid engine cars can drift. Keep killing it!
Dooood! So happy to see you post a video. Been missing your content! A+
Thank you this video helped me more then all the other mr2 videos combined🥴
It is the first two years of the sw20 that have a reputation for snap oversteer and it isn't referring to the initial slide, it is about suddenly gripping up and snapping back the other way. Still just driver error though.
I plan on building a pontiac feiro for drifting its the older American sibling of the mr2 tbh
i am so happy you finally posted this, my 4age 16v mr2 mk1b rips the pass but not like that haha
We missed you

I remember seeing this blacktop swap on eBay a while back. Like last year.
I’m a new CD fan! Love the MR2 action!
I have a 85 fiero and I call it the on road rzr lol. If you aren't afraid of the throttle it's fun to drive in corners.
All the guys bitching about Mr2's and snap oversteer should hear your explenation. I've been rallying my MR2 for a couple of years and it is the best car once you know how to drive it.
What gen mr2? The sw20 with an iron block is more likely to snap around.
Also an AW11 with a blacktop 20 valve. And a short ratio dogbox to keep the revs up.
@@myracinglife5602 That's probably why it's not snapping around. My sw20 with an aluminum v6 still wants to do it, even with a lighter rear.
Wait?! You're in Oregon? Sick! Bring it to meets please 😁
zadeopotato pretty sure he sold it already
I've seen people drift a 2009 Honda mini van, I guarantee that if you can drift that then you can drift the mr2
aww I wanted to see you do more with the MR2
Ayeeee Chelsea!! Not an e36 but atleast you uploaded something
Grab the C60 out of a 2001-2005 Celica GTS (or an Elise if you want a short 6th) and you'll get a 4.52 final drive and shorter gearing 1-5. Avoid the matrix/corolla c60's as the shift rod comes out on the wrong side of the trans. You'll need to swap the bellhousing from the c52 over to the c60 to get the 6 speed on the BT. Input and output shaft bearings in the c52 bellhousing will need to be changed to match the 6 speed ones and you'll need to get SW20 NA axles to complete the swap. Move over your speedo drive to the c60 mid case anddddddddd your done.
I will buy this Mr2. Where is the link?
Sorry I haven’t made it yet. Shoot me a message on IG

i want to build something similar to it, that flip car from fast & furious 6 that has also engine in mid of it, and i dont know how to handle it with shifter..? how did you or would you do it with engine + gearbox for front wheeler cars..?
Snap oversteer was only an issue in the first revision sw20’s
Does Chelsea know how to drift without a handbrake? (Just wondering) it doesn’t seem like he likes to use momentum to initiate a slide or transition
So all of the turns at our track are decel turns. So if you want to momentum drift you have to enter each turn very slow.
Also in this video I am handbraking to extend the drift because I don’t have enough wheelspeed with the gearing/power combo
Chelsea DeNofa I see, yea I guess PARC isn’t the best for that type of drifting
I'd love to see a 3sgte swaped into that AW11! Such a clean AW11 too!
I had little hope of seeing him make videos again 😭😭😭😭😭😭 but then I saw a message, cried and clicked on this video with a smile
Did you ever see the guy up North Course with the MRS looked like some craic.
Been waiting for this to drop
I wonder if you could snap oversteer to your advantage
These understeer like mad until you load up the front axle then the steering gets heavy and it starts to rotate
Not when setup properly. This car is awesome
I will like to thank Chelsea for making AW11 MR2 more expensive... JK. Sweet Blacktop swap 4AGE man, never seen one drift.

Ayeee look who it is!
Looking at ratio calculators, a C160 6 speed swap from an AE111 would apparently make first gear top out round 63kmhr.
Might be what you need to get it spinning second?
TAKE THE SCISSOR JACK OUT OF THE FRUNK LOL 😆
The one dislike is from a miata.
It rips around but could use a little boost.
