  • And by ruined, I mean ruined how bad it was.
    The shifter on this gosh danged vehicle was terrible, so what better way to fix it than to replace the entire shift unit with something like a Tower of Power. Thing is... this shifter is for a Mustang... oops

    When clamping something soft, put a long piece of wood (or similar) under the clamps. That way, you wouldn't get the dimples in the surface, plus you'll get better adhesion.

      The final drive differential ratio you mentioned is wonderful if you never expect to go more than 1/4 Mile or your daddy owns an oil company. When I was involved in road racing we had the final drive ratio workout for each track so that we red lined in high gear just as it was time to apply the brakes for the next corner that gives you the highest possible speed on the straight away and the best acceleration out of the corners it does no good to come out of the corners gangbusters and then get passed halfway down the straight away because you ran out of gear.

    Great job Winston, smashing! Gigantic Improvement Overstock. I don't have to worry about this because I know how much you love it but my formula is an automatic. But like everyone else with one of these vehicles I had the same separation of the console on the left side just as yours. I removed the top plate and I tried some very sticky double-faced tape ended improving it, but I'm going to have to give it another go because I'm not satisfied with the results. I'm going to devise a bracket that will adhere to that material on that side of the console and then clip together when you lower the top plate on top of it so it will draw it all together. I found it's not only material separating but the actual plastic that the console body is constructed of deformed with time. There was no support built into it, for the life of me I don't know why GM didn't put some kind of supporting bracket in that area to prevent this from happening. Nevertheless fantastic job!

    • @Sandhill1988
      @Sandhill1988 Před 3 lety

      Edit.... I was able to repair the sagging console, the left side driver side that is. I did not fabricate a clip like stated above I ended up using the same method that you did with the deletion of the clamps, I used a couple of straight boards to put even pressure the whole length of the side of the console to get a nice even straight Bond. Of course I didn't remove my console I did it with the console in place. As far as adhesive I used gorilla glue brand heavy duty construction adhesive that came in a caulking tube. The stuff is fantastic, used the same stuff to adhere the gasket to my air cleaner for the cowl induction works like a charm and is as tough as nails, I highly recommend the product. Just wanted to share, thanks for the great entertainment and tips cheers! 🍻

    Good old t-5 the only other thing I would replace on that car would be the 7.5 inch narrowed Chevy rear end. Getting a 9 inch either I hate to say it Ford or GM rear end bolt up perfectly to the u joint on those F body cars. The transmission itself is actually really good it’s the rear ends that blow up. I’ve blew up a Z28 Rear differential twice they are not the best even though the cars themselves are pretty awesome

    West Coast car guys are so lucky everything is solid out there. Here in the Northeast all of these kind of cars F bodies square nose pick ups fox body Mustang‘s etc. they’re all rotted. Jeeps from this era are basically all gone or disintegrated. That’s why I when you trying to buy a car in the United States if you can buy one online the best place to get them from is either the The south or the south west

    I have an 83 with a t 5 and 55k miles. And I can confirm that there is no silicone on the shifter.
    Converted my car from linkage to a hydraulic throughout bearing.

      You should have a look at a 1940s truck crash box no synchros Square straight cut gears every shift required double clutching. And you needed a yard stick to measure the shift lever throw. Now add to that really terrible brakes Steve Hills if you don't get it into the next gear you are probably dead !

    Good episode, good music. Surprised you didn’t put a paper towel or rag over the transmission but you are pretty meticulous in what you do so I’m sure it was fine.

    Well the alternator broke on my Ford once and I put a GM alternator on there had to drill out a hole and I may have used some Christmas light wiring here and there then I proceeded to take off the engine fan and I replaced it with an electric fan and I pulled out of the crushed Buick I had to mail it on the outside of the radiator and reverse the polarity and wired it with a light switch on the dashcouldn't put it down the engine side cuz the inline 6 took up that much room
