  • In today's video, we focus on restoring the engine bay of the 1986 Toyota Mr2. I sent the intake box and valley plate to be re-powder coated by JAR customs, replace the valve cover gaskets and injector seals. As a finishing touch, I restore the plastics and shine up the hoses and wiring loom.
Special thanks to @Bob Pham and @Resto Nation for the help. I also really want to thank the Mr2 community on Facebook!

Had a manual NA '86 back in the day. I still judge every new car by that great driving machine. The MR2 could be maximized for so much fun - 3rd gear on a curvy road was SOOO much fun. Thanks for keeping these machines alive and beautiful

Ah... working on the AW11 brings back good memories. I think the valve covers look great still. Great work so far!

Incredible. Looking fantastic. Thanks for the inspo to finally get off my butt and get to finishing my resto tasks on my '85 (also 8b8!)
BTW, that annoying buzzer box is actually pretty easy to remove. One of the first things I did after buying mine.

wow, kinda fortunate that i found this video, I have a '98 MR2 I've been restoring for the past 6 months, Ive been pulling pieces from a parts car that sadly has a siezed engine and have gradually been replacing all the cosmetic pieces since they were in much better shape. I havent, however, touched the engine much at all yet, I need to clean it and locate an oil leak but i havent really done much engine work in the past.
I'm slowly running out of cosmetic/non mechanical parts of the car to swap out/restore so the engine work will probably be on my to do list very soon. its nice to see a reference of what itll look like all cleaned up though.

Once your car is finished it will be incredibly rewarding to drive. These are very special cars!

Nice. my valve covers look terrible. And it's leaking. Gotta love Toyota parts, $10 for a gasket :P

Paint that rusted EGR pipe coming off the intake manifold! So many people with the 4age leave it "as is" (rusty) for no reason. BTW, often you will find the pipe and/or at the intake connection clogged with considerable carbon deposits so be VERY careful when removing and cleaning, AND...... you don't want carbon pieces falling into the intake runners.....no bueno! Engine bay is looking very nice.

Hey man, valve cover looks great. Car is in great shape too. Where did you get the fuel injector o-rings? I just picked up an '86 aw11 and may do the same but I'm having trouble finding any that fit the vehicle...

You can buy the O-Rings from any Toyota dealership. For each injector, there is a total of 3 separate O-rings/gaskets. They are a little pricey at the dealer but worth it in my opinion. There are cheaper aftermarket sets that you can buy on eBay or the auto parts store, but I didn't want to risk a fuel leak from non-oem parts. Don't forget to get the proper crush washers if you plan on removing the fuel rail like me. Thanks for watching Richard, good luck with your AW11! Feel free to shoot me any questions in the future.

It has good bones but there are some things here and there that needs a touch up. I'll show all the flaws in future videos :)
