  • In this video I make some but progress towards resolving the misfire at idle on my 2007 Yamaha FZ6. I took a deep dive into the wiring harness to look for any corrosion. I also gapped down the new iridium plugs down to 0.022", yet the struggle continues...

    Dude, thanks so much for making these videos. You ARE making a great contribution to the fz6 community!
    I still gotta follow your video to check my valve clearances, I'm scared to do it! Lol

    Urgh I know the feeling bud. I'd personally recommend the following, in order of pain in the butt;
    - Inspect airbox, make sure its all kosher in there
    - /!\ Does your bike have an O2 sensor ? Also called lambda sensor. If yes, replace it immediatly
    - /!\ Adjust the throttle bodies. Idle really exacerbates balancing issues, so this might be your ticket. (Ideally do this after a valve clearance check..)
    - Clean fuel filter
    - Doing a valve clearance check, JUST in case. I know..
    My money is on throttle bodies or O2. I'd also recommend switching back from Iridium plugs, they're not perfect and most importantly not what Yamaha recommends. But thats not important now.
    I pray to the Yamaha gods with you 🙏

    I put money on changing the ignition coil. I had the exact same issue, multimeter said the coil and plugs were fine, but after changing one of the coil packs and the low rev misfire was fixed

      Ya I agree on the probability of it being the coils. Good to hear you got yours fixed!

    After watching this video, I also watched the Iridium spark plugs upgrade video. Something you said in that one got me thinking. You said the bike goes through standard plugs in about 8000 km but my FZ6 has the same CR9EK plugs that were on the bike when I bought it, and now after riding it for almost 10k Km the plugs are still in spec when I checked them. There might be a problem there

    Hey, I've been having the same issue for about 2 years now. Recently changed the fuel pump and it didn't make any difference. After a while it started acting weird at about 5-6k rpm, pulling or stopping without any input. After my mechanic looked almost everywhere reasonable I stumbled upon CO Adjustment (my bike is a 04 fz6 but it should be the same from what I know). When checking this I found that the difference was huge (CO1: -2 and CO2: 12). Apparently, the difference between the two should be about 5 (CO1 lower as are the outside pistons and they run a bit colder than the inside ones).
    After making some adjustments and bringing the CO1 to 8, I do not have this problem anymore. I have some popping now, but I think the composition sent in the pistons is a bit rich at the moment.
    I think it's worth a try, however, from what I found on forums the bikes sold in the US might not have this diagnostic screen, or at least not so easily accessible (press SELECT and RESET for 3 sec, turn the key, keep the buttons pressed until diag is shown on the screen, press both of them once more, CO is shown, once here, you press both buttons again and a value should be displayed).
    I know it's a frustrating issue, for me, it also turned dangerous (with the pulling at 5k rpm) but I hope it helps

  • @leadnitro3
    @leadnitro3 Před 2 lety +1

    I've got the same issue on mine, lots of handlebar vibration throughout the rev range. Replacing the stretched out timing chain helped smoothen it out slightly at higher rpm (my bike has done 130k km), but idle fluctuation still remains. I did find a split in one of the ITB synchronisation hoses, but no real difference after I fixed it. All the best dude! Really hoping you get to the bottom of this

    • @Calvinm
      @Calvinm  Před 2 lety +1

      Interesting. I was just talking to another FZ6 owner who had their timing chain stretch out by 70k km’s. Although they said they did a lot of touring with lots of added weight on the bike. These stories are starting to make me consider that the timing chain needs replacing around 100k km’s even though the manual doesn’t specify that. Best of luck with your troubleshooting!

    I would check the ignition coils first, I've found some good used ones for around $100 on ebay and Ive seen coils cause this exact issue
    Also look at the injectors, a fuel system cleaner that you add in the tank works okay but a better way to clean them is to remove them and use an ultrasonic cleaner. Also might want to run a quick compression test on each cylinder to rule out anything internal with the valves. Compression numbers should be even across the cylinders. Just pull the fuel pump fuse and the plugs, hook up the gauge and crank the engine over a few times.

    Until I saw this video I just realized mine does this too. It never dies or throws a code. I idles just like yours. I bet it is a sync issue. I do have that tool. The old school mercury gages. Too bad you are not close by or I would loan it to you. I don't think I will have time in the next two weeks to check the sync and see if I can get rid of that. But after 2 weeks maybe. I will check back in if it makes any difference.

    Mine also has a misfire, but what really worries me is that it just won't start by it self, i also have to bump start it every time... On some days with a battery charged overnight it would start but after a few kilometers ride when you try to start it again, it would turn but won't start.

    • @Calvinm
      @Calvinm  Před 2 lety +2

      Sounds like a bad battery or stator. Better get the multi meter out to find the problem. I wouldn’t want to bump start everywhere I go!

    Hi guys mine fz6 bogs at 4k rpm on acceleration and bogs at 6k it feels like revlimmeter at 6k rpm
    If i accelerate very slow i came easy to 6k rpm but it stops.
    What can be the issue?

  • @lucijanoradic8470
    @lucijanoradic8470 Před 2 lety +1

    The thing i had on my fz6 2004 with 65000km, i was driving and got misfiring from exhaust, and the bike was going great till 7000rpm after that he was firing and doing weird things. Problem was with the kill switch, a lot of old yamaha bikes had a problem with rust under kill switch, and the vibrations above 7000rpm were turning off the motorcycle, or the motorcycle can’t even get a spark.

    • @smoke05s
      @smoke05s Před 2 lety +1

      I just had that issue too. I bought a new kill switch unit and replaced it. along with iridium plugs. Also for some reason my airbox mounts (near the battery) are too short. if i use them it pulls the throttle bodies out of the boots. In the natural position it is more than a half a hole out. I just trimmed them off so that I can still bolt the battery down. It runs so much better now. Anyone else have airbox mounting misalignment issues?

  • @raytokens2291
    @raytokens2291 Před 2 lety +1

    Not to put the moccas on it but it may be worth checking for piston movement from top dead centre on either cylinder 3.or 2 but shortly after my fizzer done this despite all my efforts one of the cylinders let go and gave me rod movement at tdc on one of the formentioned cylinders. Im currently in the process of rebuilding the engine. I hope this isn't the case. Italy be an idea to check for it. It only involves removing the air box and sparkplugs and using a long thin rod in the sparkplugs holes at tdc on every cylinder. Hope this is of help. Fingers crossed for you bruvva

    • @Calvinm
      @Calvinm  Před 2 lety +1

      Dang I really hope it isn’t that! But that would be a simple thing to test. I’ve done that test before on a friends Subaru engine when he spun a rod bearing. Good luck with the rebuild!

    Does this present itself if you open the throttle from a standstill, do you get a bogging down as you open up the throttle? I'm getting that every now and then, but I think it's a problem with the map in my power commander

    • @Calvinm
      @Calvinm  Před 2 lety

      No I only get the issue at idle or under load accelerating from a stop. If I just free rev the engine it doesn’t hesitate or misfire

  • @eucerin_perin
    @eucerin_perin Před 2 lety

    idk if you've checked compression on all 4 cylinders yet? its unlikely but good to rule one more thing out. Id also try checking and cleaning out the Idle air control sensor valve since it seems like your issue is mainly at the low RPMS my money would be on that.
    Good luck may the shadow of the fz6 bless you

    I now hate my FZ6. Just did a oil change and replaced plug's. Bike was starting up fine and now I just started it and took it out of the garage, switched it off to get my helmet and now she just swing's and not starting. Checked for spark and no spark 😖

  • @hstefan
    @hstefan Před 2 lety

    How many miles has the bike got? Have you tried syncing your throttle bodies? I don't think that's a missfire, rather than a lumpy idle or basically the engine trying to fight a constant rpm due to different vacuum values on the throttle bodies.
    There are vacuum nipples on each throttle with number 3, if I recall correctly being the master. You sync them exactly the way you sync carburetor bikes. Also use whatever NGK spark plugs the service manual says, I know these R6 derived FZ engine are rather finicky when not using the correct plugs especially under high load low rpm situations.

    • @Calvinm
      @Calvinm  Před 2 lety

      It's sitting at 70k km's, I haven't synced the throttle bodies but it's on my radar for sure!

    • @hstefan
      @hstefan Před 2 lety

      @@Calvinm syncing throttle bodies should be on the top of your list when diagnosing a lumpy idle or random misfires otherwise you will be chasing your tail for days. Also adjusting intake and exhaust valves should be a top priority at 70k kms especially if you have no known service record that it has been done before.

  • @Hotrob_J
    @Hotrob_J Před 2 lety

    Stupid question, but are you running regular or high test?
    I just picked one up this year and the owners manual said 87 octane was fine and that's what I've been running, but the sticker on the swing arm says 91 octane...
    Other than that, the ITBs or injectors seem the most likely to me, could be one cylinder is a smidge too lean?

    • @Calvinm
      @Calvinm  Před 2 lety +1

      I’m running regular 87 gas. Everything I’ve read about the FZ6 is that regular is what it is designed around. You’re right, I do think fuelling is related to this problem.
