  • In this video I will be checking over all the specifications and tolerances for the charging system circuit guided by the factory service manual on this FZ6. I will show you how to check your stator, regulator rectifier and battery. I have struggled over the years to keep the FZ6 charged and happy which has lead to me taking a deep dive on the entire charging circuit. Below are the relevant specs to this diagnosis.
    Stator coil resistance spec = 0.22 - 0.34 ohms
    Battery should be above 12.7 Volts when disconnected from system
    Battery should be over 14.0 Volts when revved at 5000 RPM

    Switch to an LED headlight and tail light. That will remove about 100 watts from your system without reducing light output and will likely solve your low speed charging issue.

      Glad to hear the video helped you! With the FZ6 you definitely gotta keep the revs up just to keep the battery topped up. I've gotten into the habit of lightly revving the bike to 3k rpm if I'm sitting at a long light. I wish it wasn't this way but oh well.

      Yeah I'm actually electronically limited right now due to power of the battery so I'm going through all the usual suspects of what is causing it I can only do about 5,000 RPM Max right now and I have to keep the bike at 3K RPM while stopped just to be able to move from a red light or stop sign and on top of that it has to be at 3000 or higher just to be able to begin moving without falling on its face

    Thanks for the great video man! Yeah, I am having similar problems. Battery seems to cut out even when I am riding the bike. I came up on a stoplight the other day and the engine cut out. Bike wouldn’t start after that. About 2 minutes later it started up again. I made it another mile and it did the same thing at the next stop light. Luckily a guy swooped down from a nearby apartment like Batman and helped me jump it. I didn’t make it out of the parking lot before it died. It’s happened a few times: the lights and display go out and the bike dies when I stop revving it. I did leave it on a while back and killed the battery. I am taking that in to get tested, but it sounds like I’m gonna be testing all these parts.

    Hi Calvin, loved the video but don't experience the problems you mention. On my third battery from new (2008) and this current battery has only been flat once in it's 5 years of service. I charged it up and had no probs since. I usually only ride it for an hour or two a week and don't rev it extremely hard. It's been super reliable and I never really had any trouble even though I have two front lights on all the time and heated grips. Also have a gear change indicator wired. Greetings again from Australia, cheers, Pete Bosch.

    Very informative video. I have had kind of similar problems as you, that after a short ride, my bike wont turn back on and I had to jumpstart it. I checked everything, stator, rectifier, fuses, wires and brought a new battery. Now it's starts every time, but im worried that it will happen again because of the rectifier. I measued the carging voltage of the rectifier at around 5.000 rpm and the voltage cuts off at 13,47v, which I guess is not enough. Im planing of replacing it, just have to find a place to buy it. :-)

      I had a very similar problem with my bike not getting past 13.5 ish volts. I concluded it was mostly due to the battery and short rides. Back when I was having that issue I would throw a battery tender on the bike once a week just to keep it topped up. Good luck and stay safe!

    08 FZ6 with only 14 000 km on it, I recently replaced the battery start of the season and I found that after it has sat for about a weak it has power but not enough to start. Excellent video to give me some information on where I can start trouble shooting. Not having a tender attached to the bike (the first 5 years of the bike it would start after sitting for the winter first crack every time) I have to open the gas tank up every time I want to put a trickle charger on it. I do tend to ride only short periods. At most 30 mins of riding mostly highway. However been finding after I drove it 2 days in a row for about 20 min rides each the third day I went to take it out the bike wouldn't start. Thanks for the advice and easy break down of steps to get closer to figuring out what might just be the issue.

      It sounds like you have a parasitic drain on your battery. As in one circuit on your bike isn’t completely turning off when the key is out. Sometimes heated grips or accessories do that. I’d recommend getting a multimeter and reading up on how to find parasitic drain. Best of luck!

    • @AaronJohnBell

      @@Calvinm After going through all the steps it does appear that once the battery was fully charged and unhooked it held around 12.64 only dropping slightly. Stator and Rectifier both seen well. I feel the charging system is doing it's job. But something somewhere is causing the battery to drain. The bike is completely stock with no aftermarket addons and from what I can see everything seems to not have any frays. Bike has never been dropped. Next step I'm guessing will be to look for continuity between all the wires. And have my battery tested since its under warranty and should be free just incase there is something I'm not picking up.

    I tried starting it yesterday . The motored turned over with no problem but with no ignition. It might be an electrical issue. It got a major tune up and overhaul about 2 months ago. The battery didn't seem weak at all. So I am a little puzzled.

    very informative video!
    I ran into some electrical issues recently and ended up replacing the stator as the old one looked burnt out / corroded. After replacing it, the bike is charging great (13.5v idle, 14v 5k). The resistance on the stator is high though - it's reading 0.7 ohms. my multimeter has resistance of .1 so that would make it 0.6 ohms. it is an aftermarket stator that was advertised as more powerful than the original. do you think the high resistance is a problem even if the bike is making the proper charging voltage?

    • @Calvinm
      @Calvinm  Před 3 lety +1

      It sounds like you're getting the appropriate voltage at the battery. The resistance specification may be slightly higher on your aftermarket stator. Maybe contact the manufacturer of the stator to get a spec from them for what a good condition stator of their's should measure. It probably won't be an issue, probably just a slight material or winding difference in the stator. Where did you get the stator?

    Weird, never had any charging problems with my 2006 FZ6. My battery is more than 5 years old Yuasa and still strong. I do not even have any issues with starting the bike at near 0*C temperatures. I put more than 2.5kkm this year in temperatures below 10*C with heated grips (55 W power) almost constantly turned on and everything runs perfectly. I only had an issue once when turn signal relay ceased to cooperate, but it started to work again after I restarted the bike. Also I had to replace a starter due to the fact that the brushes were completely worn out and I would get error code 12 due to this fact out of nowhere.

      That's great you've had no issues. This kinda confirms my belief that a trouble free bike stays trouble free. As soon as one charging system component starts to get weak it takes another down with it. Or maybe that's just my jaded perspective haha.

    Hi. I have question. Yesterday check engine light came on. And that was about error 46. So I measured stator coil resistance - 0.29/0.30 thats OK. Than I measured battery when disconnected from system I got around 13.1 volts thats OK. But when I measure battery voltage when I rev at 5000RPM I got way above 17volts and keep increasing. Thats not OK right? So I need new regulator. Please respond, because its bike season and I got this check engine light. How bike rides nothing changed and nothing tells about problem but I don't like that check engile like and error 46/

    • @Calvinm
      @Calvinm  Před 3 lety +2

      Hi Rihards, yes going up to 17 volts and climbing at 5000 rpm does sound like you have a bad regulator. It makes sense that your battery rests at 13.1 because it is being overcharged. Your battery with everything disconnected should be closer to 12.6. It is usually recommended to change your regulator and rectifier at the same time because they are so closely connected but I've changed each part individually before and not had any issues. Best of luck!

    • @Calvinm
      @Calvinm  Před 2 lety +1

      There isn’t a test in the factory service manual that involves running the bike without the battery connected to test the power of the stator. I wouldn’t recommend doing that either because it could overload the stator and cause problems. The bike might run with the battery disconnected but I could be wrong.

      I found a problem, previously I had a problem with rectifire, which charged the battery up to 18 volts, I damaged the relay from the heating grips, which after turning off the ignition constantly gave voltage to control the heating grips and thus discharged my battery

      @@Calvinm Damaged heated grips caused a short circuit and damaged the relay that discharged the battery while not using it, unplugged all the extras that were connected to the battery, changed the battery and problem resolved

    15,5 Volts it's too high! One should never exceed 15.0Volts charging 12v batteries!
