    The misfire on my 2004 fz6 turned out to be a bad throttle position sensor. Yamaha had an outstanding recall for that, and the dealer replaced it free of charge!
    Apparently this applies to 2004-06 fz6 models only so wouldn't have been the issue for you, but maybe this knowledge will lead somebody to call the dealer and ask the question even if their bike is now 20 years old 😊

    I just checked my valves and after putting everything together the bike has a misfire. Pretty upset about it, thankfully its winter and Ive got months to figure it out. Triple checked all coil connections and cable order. All cyls have spark at wires, I'll go ahead and replace the plugs and see if that does it. Its got to be a damn coil or plug, because I looked at it wrong. Istg nothing ever goes smoothly, Im trying to be as thorough as possible doing work on the bike and its clowning on me. Doing the fork seals was a shit show too, the steel tube was stuck like crazy in the bottom tube, though I was going to break something. The stuck spacer was literally submerged in oil but still didnt budge without lethal gorilla warfare. The other fork went smoothly as intended by satan, first the stuck one to have me wondering if Im doing it wrong, then the easy one.
    Update: It was a damn plug! Measured the coils too for extra reassurance.

    Calvin Hi.
    I had the same problem with my bike (same bike) in fact... i did EXACTLY THE SAME AS YOU, i bought a entire throttle body assembly as it was a very good price, and mine was very dirty anyway, so.. i have two now jajajaja but it didn't solve the misfiring problem.
    In the end i realize the problem was the ignition coils all along but there is a problem with FZ. It's a waster spark system and i found various disavantages with this dual cylinder system.
    * First. if the problem is the coild it could be de spark plug connector leaking energy
    * Could be thhe cable leaking energy
    * Could be the coul itself leaking as they can breake
    So in the end... you have a 3 possible part fail per coil, making it a 6 possible failure points....
    So i just forgot about the absolutely obsolete system and install 4 Yamaha R1 2015 individuals coils making 2 series.
    Now my bikke runs like a dream... and if in the future i have one coil failing, at least it would be easier to change and diagnose, change the coils like this is very easy, you dont even need to diassembly the bike, you can do it in the little space that ithere is left, and you can diagnose one by one... and whats more, you can even found them very cheap even new with chinese coils that works very good.
    That is a little tip for you (because i iamagine you did use theh FZ6 coils again).

    • @Calvinm
      @Calvinm  Před 2 lety

      That’s wild that you had the exact same problem and also tried to change the throttle body assembly! I like the idea of changing to a coil on plug design, it is a lot more modern. Is there a website or article you followed to do the conversion? I would have to read more about the wiring for the R1 coils to understand what wiring is needed to trigger them. Thanks for sharing your experience! 👍

    • @cyberkiller83
      @cyberkiller83 Před 2 lety +2

      @@Calvinm HI Calvin, not really there is no website i just realized i could do this myself if i understand how the system works and is very easy.
      In fact i will explain now so anyone else could tried.
      The basic principle is, that the FZ6 behaves like a Twin Engine at ignition level by a system that Yamaha calls. Goup Type Fuel Injection, that is made of two cylinder bodies and is commonly called at automotive industry at the ignition system like a Waste Spark Ignition System.
      Basically at ignition level is... when the bike one to ignite Cylinder 1, it send the spark to 1 and 4, and when the bike one to ignite cylinder 2, it sends it to 2 and 3, and when it ignites 3, it ignites 2 and 3 again and same with cylinder 4. So Cylinder 1 and 4 is a group and cylinder 2 and 3 are the other group, they are ignited together all the time, so its called waste, because when the bike ignites one cylinder, their pair it's not at the explosion stroke, so it's spark is wasted.. Yamaha do this because is simpler and cost less (The basic principle at the FZ6 a value R6)
      So what i did is... the idea is to foul the FZ6 ignition system into think that it has the FZ6 ignition coil, and the ECU sense this via the coil impedance. So i need it to find a coil that it has at least half of the FZ6 impedance, that according to FZ6 service manual is 1.53~2.07 ohms (it varies according to temperature) and so when i put 2 together it would have the same or close impedance of the FZ6 and voila. Yamaha R1 2015 to 2019 according to their Service manuals use a ignition coil of 0.85~1.15 ohms, that is about the half impedance of the FZ6, most exactly the model that i used is the Mitsubishi F6T558 of a 2015 R1.
      I bought a used R6 ignition coil wiring loom, rewired so the medium could be at series and the 1 and 4 cylinder could be the other series, put some end plugs so it would mate with the FZ6 electrical loom and it start immediately without hesitation, without any issue, and i have been using this system for almost a year or so.
      I read all R1 and R6 Models service manuals and i found that from year to year the ignition coils impedance have change, the models of the coils have changed too. BUUTT i heard to that t hey are all interchangeable, there are some Denso, there are some Mitsubishi, but it would work with all fo them, looks like the ECU is not so picky regarding impedance, so in the end, maybe what i did to select the most close one in impedance, is not necessary.
      Here you go, that is the way you can have the multiple ignition coil system on the FZ6, and it works for the XJ6 too and the OLD R1 (199x) that it has the same coils found on the FZ6 and they aver very hard to find and they are expensive.
      I was thinking about this mod about two years ago, when my hesitation at low rpm started, is annoying and i always suspected to be a high energy related problem and i prefer this solution than using the stock ignition coils because, as i mention before on the stock one... you coil could fail, you high energy cable (coil cable) could fail, or the boot could fail, so... is very hard to diagnose and maybe you change your coils and the problem wasn't the coils, but the boot, and like wise... is very annoying.
      With the Direct on Sparkplug system, you don't have all those elements, there is only the coil and that is it and you can diagnose it one by one.
      BTW. I recommend you if you do this and even with the stock coil boots, always use dielectric grease at the coil boot tips, and the coil boot body until the top, so it will help to isolate the current and will impermeabilize the system, so when you wash your bike, it will prevent ignition failure because of spark leakage because of the water.
      Finally, kudos for your channel, i love everything about it, i do all my bike work my self too, and made some very interesting mods too, i love to see a great community around this wonderful bike, the best bike Yamaha ever produced for me... and sorry for my English, i am from Colombia and Spanish is my primary language.

      The voltage off the battery was fine with lights on or idling. The FZ6 doesn’t produce much charging voltage at idle so that can be problematic if you spend a lot of time idling. If it wasn’t idling with lights on I’d get like 12.4 bolts ish. Hope you resolve your issue.

Is this necessary or should I wait until I feel much slack or notchiness? Also my Michelin Pilot 5 front tyre needs replacing soon, although the back still has much service life. They are noisy on my FZ6S S2 although not on my son's MT09. Can I put a Pilot 6 on the front and they won't affect the handling or be noisy? Again, greetings from Australia.

    • @Calvinm
      @Calvinm  Před rokem +1

      I wouldn’t replace head bearings until necessary. That kind of stuff rarely goes back unless it’s exposed to the elements constantly. Not really sure on the tire situation. I think you can mismatch but it’s best to have a matching pair.

    • @kamn1
      @kamn1 Před 8 měsíci

      If it works dont touch it! Only do regular maintainance and find a new mechanic, hes obviouisly after the bag or an idiot. Steering bearings are quite the job, I just did mine because they were rusted out because prev owner blsated them with water Im guessing.
      A good brand tire shouldnt be loud, you might have a defect tire or a different problem. You can mix match tires unless ur pushing the limits but this isnt the bike for that anyway. Good brand street tires all have very similar constriction and level of grip.

    I wanna to explain a some trap for electric newbies. The ignition coil is a high voltage transformer. Most often they short-circuit between windings. If the short circuit is between, for example, 3 and 5% of the wire's length, you will not measure anything wrong with an ohmmeter. But for a transformer it is like a short circuit, like driving with the handbrake on. A bit of theory: bobparker.net.au/lopt_tester/k7205.pdf Greetings from Poland.
