  • The jab is the most frequently used punch, and without a doubt the fastest one you can throw. In this lesson, Patrick Fulop explains how to throw a basic Jab. Enjoy!

Through injuries in football, rock climbing, windsurfing, etc., I have learned that full extension is dangerously close to hyperextension, so I learned that all joints (shoulder, elbow, knee, etc.) should always be slightly flexed in EVERY movement of your life; even when pushing open a door, doing push-ups, handstand, and even when streching for flexibility.

You are 100% right, Wadocan. We also recommend students keep all joints slightly flexed in all movements in martial arts. Good observation.

I have subscribed and Thank-you for excellence in teaching. I have been mercilessly bullied for many years. I was beat up quite badly a few months ago. I just stood there and took the punches which were many. My face was a mess. Most of the punches were aimed at my face. I have mental health issues and I'm autistic. I'm an easy target. Thank-you again. You are my teacher and my friend.

That's definitely possible, but you should only to use these techniques on the bad guys. First thing is technique, then strength, conditioning your body to become stronger, then speed, and finally it's all about timing, because your opponent will be moving, and also probably attacking you. There is no secret, it's all about having strong basics, good conditioning, and then practice, practice, practice. - Patrick Fulop

Thanks for the question, Kagami. Indeed, it is important to make a proper fist, what I can say is tight fingers, thumb in front, and flat surface with the knuckles. Straight wrist. Then you must condition your knuckles by doing knuckles push-ups and plank, as well as hitting the bag with bare knuckles. STOP BEFORE YOU BLEED. Will make a video on this in the future. And please, call me Patrick!
