In this clip from Open Bar 14, we give our thoughts on the Thor Love and Thunder trailer, and whether this movie is just another bait-and-switch to bring in Female Thor.
You are completely brushing off the fact that Sylvie is a variant of infinite Loki variants, and the two of them develop a bond. You are just taking issue with it because she's a woman.
@@NoActuallyGo-KCUF-Yourself Yes. Because like all political doublespeak, it doesn't mean what they claim it does. Valkyrie. The woman who, upon becoming sad, captured and sold slaves to die horrifically in combat. For drinking money. That was it. Her go to thing for when she encountered tragedy. Which shows she's evil. And it's always forgotten.
To be fair she was quite literally trapped on a lawless planet where being "good" is more or less impossible. Everyone has a rock bottom, saying she "became sad" is kind of being a total unempathetic cunt as she watched all her people get slaughtered around her with their corpses becoming her fucking blanket. Saying she's evil because she went through THAT and then when she landed on a planet full of evil she did things that we consider to be not good to drown her misery in booze is like going up to a WWII vet or a holocaust survivor and calling them a pussy.
"Everything is being turned into an episode of friends" That is a very clear and insightful description of where the superhero movies are going --- an episode of friends with some additional scenes of special effects
Ah cue the reworked theme song then for phase 4 of MCU: "So we all told you it was going to be this way" "The detractors wrote us off, said we were having bad days" "Its like they're delusional in Phase 4 mostly sucking here" "The Glory Days Are Gone and We Made It Clear That" "We wont be there for it" "Since the glory days are gone" "We wont be there for it "Endgame is the swansong" "We wont be there for it" "Too political so we say so long"
@@gabrielboorom2683 I don't hate friends, I can appreciate it in its place. But you're right, HIMYM and friends fill a very specific niche, and have no place in superhero stuff
They will absolutely portray Thor as a bumbling incompetent idiot and female Thor as determined, stoic, and capable. We’ve already seen Thor debased in endgame when he should’ve been out in space training like Vegeta after Thanos defeated them.
Agreed. This is what happens when writers are given jobs they didn't earn. The writer who decided that never had to do anything meritable. Movies that show their characters working hard and/or earning knowledge to defeat an enemy is very satisfying compared to sitting on your ass, depressed etc.
They could’ve redeemed Thor in Endgame by simply having him go into the multiverse (mini verse?) for twenty seconds earth time, equaling five or ten years alternate universe time, and return physically and mentally in shape and ready for battle.
My favorite Thor was the one from Infinity War. He was determined, looked super cool, was very strong but still had that slight comedic edge to him with mostly dry humor. I think the way he was in that movie worked the best.
Soldier of fortune Thor on a galactic mission of revenge was astonishingly good, for Hemsworth and the character. To turn him immediately after into a weepy, reluctant, cringy, weak mess who gets beaten to a pulp with ease by Thanos when he's the character out of everyone in the comics who always puts up the best fight against the Titan, was an absolute insult to the character. Add in that Thor should have been allowed to redeem himself by snapping everyone back (to close his arc by letting him close the chapter on how he inadvertently gave Thanos the time to snap in Infinity War and that would be his ultimate revenge, undoing Thanos' work after Thanos killed half his people, Heimdall, his brother), should have remained King and I'm honestly disgusted by how they ruined him in that movie. Given Taika made him more of a cowboy of the cosmos in Ragnarok (on a solo mission to discover more about the infinity stones at the start of the movie, which I love since Thor has always been Marvel's bridge to the stars) and finally made him King, I pray they either dethrone 'King' Valkryie or kill her off and have Thor become King. Yes he's reluctant same as he always is in the comics, hell his Donny Cates run these last few years covered that, but to have him wander off and give it to Valkryie who ran away from her people for untold time to become a drunken enslaver of anyone unfortunate enough to come across her, is just bizarre but does put the cards on the table as to what they were doing.
Thats the merger of post Ragnarok Thor by Taika and the Russos view of Thor as the team’s Big Hitter, and Chris’s own investment of himself in the role. Thats mine as well.
Well you're not wrong. But that was also under the direction of a completely different pair of directors. Thor has been sort of a whore with all the different people controlling him.
One of my biggest issues is that Thor isn't a title, it is literally his name. When they try to make a new "Thor" that takes up the mantle, they inevitably diminish the existing one. There are other Asgardian gods besides Thor. They could even have Tyr come in (though I am not confident that they wouldn't botch it).
In the original comics though, that wasn't really true. Odin changed Mjolnir so that anyone who was 'worthy' could take it up and gain his power. There are a number of examples where other people got his power that way. This isn't New Marvel stuff either, this is the 80s and 90s comics I'm talking about. That said, I agree with your point. Even when someone took up the mantle of Thor, they weren't actually him, and people knew that. This whole female Thor thing is ridiculous and goes against decades of writing about the character. Can a woman take up Mjolnir if she's 'worthy' - like anyone else could if they were 'worthy' - and thus gain Thor's power? Yes, absolutely. That doesn't make her fem-Thor. It makes her whoever she is + Thor's powers.
@@SouthernGuy5423 I know that people like Beta Ray Bill are a thing. I don't even dislike Beta Ray Bill as a character (although I wasn't really a fan of Thor Corps.) @@robblack4630 Take responsibility and lead. Firstly, when he was an arrogant douche seeking glory over selflessness, secondly when he had to come to terms with not really wanting to be king, but desiring more to help people himself-and be free to do so personally, third movie was him having to accept people's fealty, and find strength in his people and their will rather than purely his own power.
@@mortuitissedai2085 that's what I'm seeing people say, but I disagree. Movie 1, he learned to be responsible and less hot headed. Avengers, he learned to accept responsibility for his actions. Thor 2, he learned to stand up for what you believe is right, even when loved ones disagree. Ultron, he was pretty much just exposition for introducing infinity stones. Thor 3, he learned what it meant to sacrifice everything for his people. Infinity war, he didn't learn anything. He was a ragdoll on a revenge mission the whole movie. Endgame was more or less the same, but less about revenge and more about redemption. He's had the most growth of any character in the MCU, he went from an arrogant and unstoppable demigod to a character who's lost almost everything, so out of the whole avengers cast he's the one character I can see wanting to retire. @@maximusorbis2548 I don't disagree that it was a disservice, I am saying that if it was going to happen to anyone, it makes the most sense that it happened to him. Literally everyone else had a reason not to be like that, except maybe Hawkeye. Captain Marvel is just an all around mistake.
Well, he had found himself 2 or 3 times now? So My guess is he has to find himself 10 times total before he finally has a purpose. (Not that he didn't find one in Thor. But hey he kinda forgot)
I mean it could be worse. He could have found himself finally being a good guy and then dying ten minutes into the next movie only to be replaced by a dollar store knockoff that constantly gets beaten up and berated.
It's unfortunate really. I enjoy Hemsworth, he has good comic timing, and plays the straight man well. A charismatic dude that will play second fiddle to some 105lb girl that has zero charisma or physicality in an action role...

I don't believe from that trailer we get the idea of him playing second to anyone. It's going to be a mesh up Jane Foster Thor and the God Butcher, both extremely good Thor stories that tell a better story than 'Thor hit stuff really hard with hammer, grrr!'.

The life lesson Thor’s story teaches is, after suffering and loss, give up on your life goals and find yourself. That, when presented with two options, embrace your potential and responsibilities to become the best you, or just give up, wander aimlessly, and bullshit your way through life, the latter is what you should do. Because that’s what heroes do
You just don’t understand that responsibility is dull and boring and running around with your friends is fun and gives you the chance to drop quippy one liners all the time.
I would accept that more if: Number 1) They weren't replacing the male heroes. And number 2) We were talking about female Marvel superheroes like Rogue, Jean Grey, Storm, Black Widow, Elektra, Invisible Woman, Wasp, Scarlet Witch, Gamora, Sif, the real Valkyrie. You know, original heroines. Heck I would give a pass to She-Hulk, since she wasn't created to humiliate and/or replace her male counterpart in favor of a feminist agenda. As far as the current bash of dollar store female versions of male heroes like female Thor, female Wolverine (she was fine as X-23), female Iron Man, etc. They can shove it.
I was really hoping the next Thor film was going to be Guardians 3. No keed for this film. Also, why is Valkyrie in charge? She betrayed her oath and abandoned Asgard but apparently is "a good leader"? Bull.
in the 5 year gap between the snap and Endgame, apparently she was basically in charge while Thor became a fat & lazy dudebro who did nothing but drink and threaten youths on a video game.
@@InfernosReaper Exactly. They trashed his character so that Valkyrie can be king, despite NO experience or education in leadership and governance. I saw some episodes of the animated Guardians of the Galaxy on Disney+, and it's actually good. For 12-year-olds maybe, but more respectful of the characters than any movie. It's the gang fighting villains and making allies and some-time allies. Making a fortune and losing it, getting captured and escaping, hired to steal an artefact and being set up. Saving the galaxy. Why is it good? Look at the names of the producers and writers of the episodes. Just ordinary people. Not The Usual Suspects. It's just fun adventures. And I love Cosmo the Soviet space dog with telepathic and telekinetic powers who keeps security at Knowhere and mind-speaks with a Russian accent.
@@alverrann3097 Is favorite series, is good to watch! Cosmo welcomes loyal viewer! I work as a translator, and I translated fourteen episodes of this show to my language. In the forum we had a lengthy discussion about which names to keep in English; generally we settled for keeping geographic locations like Knowhere in English, but translating titles, unless they would sound too bad that way. "Darkhawks" only works in English, otherwise it would sound like ornitology. Glad you also like the show!
I was honestly expecting Thor to become the new Odin, with the eye loss and everything, with a new Valhalla raised and the gods reborn from human parents. I pictured Anthony Hopkins' Odin returning to pass on the Odinforce, saying to Thor that there must always be an All--Father, and Thor should pass on his mantle to a new Thor and become the next Odin like his father did before him, the cycle repeating over and over. Or is that making too much sense?
Absolutely right. Like in the Straczynski run where he established New Asgard and went on a journey to find his old Asgardian people inhabiting human bodies post Ragnarok (after Thor became Rune King).
They were going for that up to IW. Then they just ruined him. He could have been an incredibly badass character. A king, perhaps a cynical one after Thanks, with Odin's might, established on earth.
They proved they didnt care when they killed Odin off for no reason in Ragnarok. Nothing made sense in that movie. It all went downhill after that. Infinity war Thor was a brief cameo. Ragnarok made sure of that.
He more than deserves it. He's gone through multiple "down but not out" stories, and his arc is pretty much done. He's found himself already as a leader. But no, Marvel needs wahmen.
@@cristopherjeffery6737 well as long as it's written by the creatively bankrupt woke writers at Marvel it must be ok and shouldn't be criticized? "i need to find myself" is the justification women use as to why they cheated on you with chad thundercock. NOT a line that any iteration of thor shout utter.
I may be in the minority, but Thor: Ragnarok was by far my least favorite Thor movie, at least until Love and Thunder comes out. The first two Thor movies were somewhat hurt by the early MCU's uncertainty with whether magic was real or not, so they couldn't commit to Asgardians being actual gods or not, and they went for a pseudo-sci-fi aesthetic when they should have really embraced the fantasy and mythic nature of the franchise. Kenneth Braunaugh did a solid job of giving the movie a Shakespearean vibe, with Thor having to lose everything in order to become worthy of it while Loki gets everything he wants, but spirals downward in an attempt to keep it. Thor Ragnarok was basically Chris Hemsworth and Taika Waititi saying "fuck everything that came before, burn it all down". Part of it was apparently due to Chris having a natural talent for comedy and Thor not being a very comedic character. The thing with Thor is that he's basically someone who starts as Boromir from Lord of the Rings, but who is growing to be more like Aragorn. He's a good man with a bit of pride who enjoys fighting, but cares deeply for people, especially his family and homeland. But over time he loses the pride, gains some humility, and grows into an even more noble person. Not perfect, but one more suited to be a hero and king. That's a perfectly fun and valid character, but it isn't very funny. In retrospect, Chris would have been a better fit as the MCU Hercules. Thor Ragnarok as a Hercules movie would have fit a lot better tonally.
You may be in the minority, but you are not alone. The first two movies had lots of flaws, but they were at least building towards something. Then Ragnarok essentially soft reboots and tears everything down. He should have been stronger than Hela with all of Asguard behind him, but no that would require Hela to not be op. Then his "journey" was so he could be told he was the God of lightning, not so he could figure it out himself. The fact that that movie shit on Thor while simultaneously destroying any chance of getting a true planet Hulk and World War Hulk movie makes it one of my least favorite MCU movies.
@@joshuabonesteel2303 God, Hela was so stupid. She's the Goddess of Death, but her power is "I Summon Weapons". Which would actually fit a War God, but she's just constantly producing swords out of thin air like some street magician from the wrong part of town. And people praised her as being this amazing villain compared to the one-dimensional villains of the MCU, but she was every bit as one-dimensional. It's just where guys like Ronan tended to be stoic, her one note was that she was snarky. Now maybe that's more entertaining to some people, but it killed any menace she had despite however many swords she was throwing around. About the only thing I did like was them making it clear that the hammer wasn't the source of Thor's power, it was a tool that helped him focus said power. But Odin also put that enchantment on the hammer so that there's basically a copy of Thor's power in it. . . . and I just realized that unless they change things for Love and Thunder, they're going to have to explain why Jane gets the full Thor powerset while Steve was able to wield the hammer, but wasn't transformed into Captain Ameri-Thor. Because if the movie tries to say that Jane is more worthy of Thor's power than Steve, I have a large helping of "Fu" and "Ckyou" for the movie.
Ragnarok had some okay moments, but it overdid it on the comedy, which undermined situations that should've been serious. Moreover, Thor doesn't seem to care too much about the deaths of his friends. The worst part is how Thor's imprisonment and helplessness to do anything about his home being taken over by a maniac felt a bit like a comedy remake of Batman's imprisonment in Darknight Rises. Dark World had some okay moments, but was undermined by the meandering and could've done without the whole "Convergence" thing. Just have the Bifrost fixed and let Jane get exposed to the redmist while adventuring with Thor instead of overdoing the "clever" visual effects and teleportation shtick.
I understand the idea of Earthlings rubbing off on Thor and him adapting some of their mannerism but they definetly overdid it, and it happened way too fast. There was an aristocratic kind of feel to earlier Thor. Like he was actual royalty. A prince. I really hate what they did with him.
@@blessanabey8386 That'd fit for a continuation of the Joss Whedon infection. That's basically how he ended "Buffy" - with a diverse crew of girls who could all be slayers at the same time. So no one is special.

Taika handing Portman the hammer on his knee is still the most simpy, cringe moment I've ever seen. Even Portman has an awkward look on her face. Like "Damn bro, you serious right now?"
As someone with Scandinavian ancestry that honestly bugged me a bit. That isn’t his hammer to hand over. It’s someone else’s culture, yes it’s a comic series but the reason the series worked is because of the mythology. Not much different to a Conquistador presenting an Aztec chief’s weapon/scepter to the Spanish Queen. Cultural theft and abuse for the amusement and appeasement of the elite, the very crimes these people whine about constantly.
And it’ll be a bumbling White Incompetent ‘Dad’ Thor who props up the film along with other whacky characters so the agenda of strong female can slip through. Total garbage.
I really hope they both share the spotlight. I know they can pull it off, they already did it well. He seems to act a tiny bit more like Odin so I hope they go with that
This whole political push in movies has made a movie lover like me refuse to go anymore. I feel like every studio is trying to shoehorn a narrative that isn't part of the story. The point of the narrative is to draw you into this world not the world we live in. Movies aren't meant to be apart of our world unless it's narrative is supposed to be. I'm sick of these agendas that are being pushed for Oscar nominations.
Basically the mid to late 2010's really amped up this sad movement. We got a taste of it with the racist articles on Fant4stic in 2015, got smacked with the sexist fans bullcrap with Ghostbusters Answer The Call in 2016 and the toxic fans garbage articles in 2017 with Last Jedi. This movement cannot die fast enough.
Black Panther was kind of the start of it in comics. That movie's plot only would've worked *before* the first Avengers movie, because once literal space aliens have invaded the earth to try to either wipe out or conquer humanity, most of the bullshit identity politics and old grudges, both petty and justified, suddenly don't matter. Thus, the bulk of Killmonger's character motivations and goals don't matter anymore, so why is he more fixated on "the colonizers" than revenge for them killing his dad and leaving him to fend for himself as a kid? Fucking aliens exist and want to kill us. The colonizer shit don't matter no more. If Killmonger was trying to both get revenge and conquer the world so the planet wouldn't have to rely on the Avengers to save the world(especially after they made a robot that almost destroyed it) there'd be a good source for conflict... but nope, gotta have real world politics in the alternate reality where the earth none of that shit would matter anymore.
It's interesting how the"new" female characters are just rip-offs of male characters. With the number of actual female characters that are established, the genius minds still only see value in the male characters. It's going to backfire spectacularly, and I can't wait to see it all fall apart.
Not surprising, if you follow YoungRippa he's always pointing out that they only seem to see white characters as legitimate, hence the race swapping rather than creating new original characters , same principle here with changing male to female.
They couldn’t have made this more clear. Many are excited for these characters not everything for everyone. There’s a mash up video full of excitement. I’m excited for this movie also. I don’t care about the culture war stuff. I skip What doesn’t interest me and watch what does. If others enjoy things I don’t that’s fine
In the comics Thor was always powerful, the strongest in the marvel universe, Broke Hulks neck in a "what if comic" easily snapping it and ending the rampaging hulk after he went berserk. The Lady Sif was the powerful female Asgardian woman and she always supported Thor. She loved him but he did not see it. Imagine where a good writer could take that story. Thor was always noble even with his mistakes.
Whatever happened with Sif anyway? She's basically all but written out of existence at this point with no explanation and a pair of appearances in a show of questionable continuity post-Dark World.
I was born in the 80's and comics became a part of my soul as I grew up. I played with the "ACTION FIGURES" and I watched the animated Marvel and DC shows religiously. I appreciated the first iterations of Batman and Spiderman from before I was born and the Hulk TV show was still around on re-airs. Then came the Batman movies and I wanted nothing more than to see all my superheroes put on the big screen. They were theatrical thrill rides for me. By the time Spiderman and X-Men came out when I was a teen I was living a superheroes enthusiast's dream. I went through with that thrill ride till Infinity Wars. At that point the new movies and TV shows did not support me like they used to. They no longer gave me that chill down my spine and bursts of excited tears as my childhood heroes triumphed. It's all gone now. A memory of "when I was young" like all things that pass without us wanting them to.
I'm enjoying these clips from the Open Bar sessions - don't have time for the full thing, so it's nice to get some of it in manageable chunks. It would be helpful though to have a little in the blurb on your guests for those of us who don't know them/recognise screen-names.
Even if he didn’t kill Thanos in Infinity War, he still killed him none the less in Endgame. And Hulk brought back the people Thanos snapped out of existence.
My only question is how much longer can Marvel keep making garbage films and raking in millions by coasting on the goodwill they generated in the first few years when they actually tried to write good scripts? It's been a good decade now.
I'm finding it hard to imagine that they would pass the majority of the movie's run-time over to a character so slight that she was written out of multiple movies with barely a sideways glance. Or that they would charge their still quite successful Cinematic Universe full-tilt into pursuing one of the foundering comics' more controversial story arcs. But, heaven knows, they've made some bone-headed choices before. I'll be interested to hear the reviews. Certainly not the kind of movie one hits on opening weekend.
They were done with it since before Infinity War. The fluke of No Way Home only happened because people heard it was a really good movie in a sea of diarrhea. Because nobody I know really talks about any of the movies they’ve seen because they figured out that the talent is GONE from the mainstream and they are looking for alternatives if not just outright checking out.
What really boggles my mind is how there going to spin Jane suddenly being relevant to be “worthy” like we haven’t seen or heard from her outside I think that little scene/reference from endgame when Thor goes back in time to get mjolnir if I’m not mistaken. And that is what scares me the most.
I love the character arc Thor went through. They gave him stuff to overcome that he could not do with his powers. That was well done from a writing perspective (something I would have liked more for the climax of the first Wonder Women instead of a big CGI fight). And I thought that the last time we see him it indicated he will have a fun adventure with the guardians. You see in the trailer that especially Chris Pratt and Hemsworth would have nailed it wich their charisma, chemistry and comedic talent. At least there are hints. But the rest of the trailer made me worry, since it 100% looks like they deconstruct him yet again, destroy an iconic character just to have a "stronger female version" of him. I know female Thor is in the comics. The issue is: fans love him. This looks like yet another situation where they get rid of a beloved character, played by a great male actor (and they used his good looks to lure in female audiences for sure, why else would they film him topless SEVERAL TIMES. The hyprocisy) - and they propably expect the movies to do as well or better somehow. Let's be frank: They lost the best characters. Iron man is gone. So is Cap. Now Thor as well? There are little to no characters left that actually lured in the masses. They are digging their own grave. There was a time when I was so hyped for Marvel movies. But just like Star Wars, I am mostly indifferent if I see any trailers for Star Wars or the MCU these days. Maybe if I hear good stuff about a movie or a show I'll invest my time and watch it. But for the most part these things just don't interest me, and are so bad that I have better things to do with my time and money. And it's not because of female characters or diversity, it is because those femal and diverse characters are boring, preachy and just not fun to watch. Sometimes they even have decent or good actors (like for Moon Knight), but the writing gives them nothing to work with, so they are still boring and/or dumb characters. Often enough, the actors that play these "new" characters are just as disconnected from reality, as preachy as the characters, which makes it even worse.
It's sadly going the trend of "use a character you love to mainline, but really make it about a second character" Hawkeye did it, Doctor Strange might do it too
Someone I know owns a comic shop. He now makes most of his living on Japanese Manga and games. American comic sales have drop like a rock thrown off a cliff, as well they should have. The same thing needs to happen to comic book movies.
This is actually a really good point. The entire begining part of the comics was Odin sending him to earth as Donald Blake. The entire point of that was to humble him. For him to become worthy. They literally did that in his first movie lol. Odin is dead now, he has been a man for a long time by now. It's sad what they are doing.
@@emhu2594 I adore how intrinsic the knowledge of various IP lore is becoming. 5:13 They did this exact thing with Captain Marvel in Endgame. They all of favorite characters hamfistedly sing her praise and stare in awe at her and it just felt like such an obvious attempt at them trying to force the audience to like and accept her as the new face of the MCU.
And despite all those hamfisted efforts, none of it worked - in the theatre I was in, people actually cheered when Thanos punched her out of the movie with the Power Stone. When the audience hates a version of a charcater that you signed off on so much that they would cheer for the villain smacking them about, you know you have a problem. At this point, Captain Marvel is probably beyond saving as a charcater in the eyes of many (mostly former) Marvel fans - that is how much damage Brie Larsson, and the broader mishandling of the character on both screen and page, have done.
@@gregorygreenwood-nimmo4954 Even though they have given up from what I can see, the fact they talked about trying to make Captain Marvel the new face of the MCU and even went along with that idea for a while in the first place left a pretty bad and lingering taste.

The nonstop joking began in Guardians of the Galaxy. I enjoyed that movie and will admit that I didn’t know who they were until the movie was announced. Unfortunately, Disney/Marvel in typical Hollywood fashion learned the wrong lessons from Guardians and the forced humor began to pop up in every MCU movie afterwards. The thing that I loved about the MCU before that each movie felt like I was picking up a different comic book with it’s own identity and they pulled all together for the Avengers into an over arcing story (the Infinity Saga). The “All new, All different” creep began with Captain Marvel. I didn’t watch that movie on principle because I knew what it represented. Phase 4 is going all in on the worst era of Marvel comic characters and stories. And, yes, Cato, characters talking about their feeling with more humor is here. I’m sure we’ll be treated to a turnabout where Thor tells femme Thor “That’s a good look” like when Jane saw him transform into his armor in Thor 1.
Very good point regarding each movie felt like it was a different comic book with its own identity. We had that at first with Captain America, Iron Man, Thor.
Natalie Portman as a female Thor. I have said a long time ago that Infinity WAR has set the bar very high. And that long series of movies for 12 years will never be repeated. WHY? Because people want things faster and now. And that goes with executives as well. They are going full on DC trainwreck now. It's sad.
Wasn't a fan of Infinity War. The last hour dragged out for so long when it could have been cut down to like 10 minutes. Liked Endgame way better, minus what they did with Thor.
I loved Thor in the comics. Powerhouse and just a deep and complex character. The things marvel have done and haven't done with him in the MCU have hurt my soul. They have shat on him from his very first movie and haven't stopped and are trying to drain him for everything he is worth and it is sad to watch. I think I am done with MCU. It is a relief but a sadness nevertheless.
Bro, if Thor says by the end of the movie "You are more worthy than me" or something along those lines, I am quitting, I will not watch another marvel film. I will be officially done. Endgame was the end of marvel.
I agree, after the come back of Rune Thor I got the first 10 or so comics. Don't understand how you go from Rune King Thor to less than Thor? With all the politics and Marvel/DC going Woke I just stopped buying. I have over 50,000 comics from the 50s and 60s on up. But just stopped when they started changing everything for the worse. Now Thor, Odin, etc are weak ass characters who are less than Ironman and Capt America. Just a shame. IMO, Of course.
Endgame was the end of the MCU for me. I see no reason to keep watching the movies, as the story is over. The new ones are just cash-cows, and nothing more.
I'll watch the movie for Chris Pratt, but my god, if they make Mrs. Thunder Love into the main character in the first 10 minutes, I'm walking out and just saying I paid for the popcorn.
"Thor Ragnarok was a breath of fresh air." Wat? He took nothing seriously, got his ass kicked the whole film, and was electrocuted as the "god of thunder". Am I really thr only one that didn't enjoy the film with everyone stepping on Thor's neck?
Yeah that confused me too. At the time i was really pissed at what they did to him. But all i got was that people didnt like a dark Thor. So making him dumb was funny.
Yeah. At least Man of Steel had good action. I never once got the impression that I was watching godlike creatures fight to the death, which is a big deal in an action adventure movie.
That's how Marvel goes. They're done doing a story that was consistent. Now they want replacements for established characters by overpowering their new ones.

The new Thor trailer in a nutshell: Nostalgic retro soundtrack - check. Thor further second-guessing himself over and over again even after achieving a far superior arc development to any other character (once in Ragnarok, once in Infinity Wars, and once again in Endgame) - check. Dead-eyed and lackluster Tessa Thompson pigface performance - check. Female Thor baiting - check.
The Crow was my favorite superhero film, Brandon Lee was AWESOME, it was his last role and he gave his life making the film. It was a movie with heart, not just goofy jokes and violence.
The thing too with Thor's arc pre-Endgame is that he constantly suffers loss, because since the beginning it's supposed to thematically produce this "see the fall of a god" over and over. Thor loses his powers, Thor loses his family, Thor loses his people. Yes, he gets some of that back, but what was important was that he experienced that loss and it shakes him, and it shakes his pride. It should make him question not just what king must do in times of adversity, but also make him frustrated that for all the things he can do, he can never seem to prevent the things he fears the most from happening. It's a reversal of the sort of Odin mythology where he traded his eye to see the future, and then once knowing what passes, he lets it happen instead of trying to fight it in vain. (Well, depending on the spin off story, he tries to save certain things, yes, but in the end, Ragnarok thematically is always set in stone there.) There were two possible paths I would have wanted for Thor to have grown towards. The first was for him to forsake the hammer when the fighting's done (especially Endgame, that was a great time), to become a builder and not a destroyer. To attempt to recreate Asgard, to create something out of the Avengers to help them protect other people, to create something that makes him king. He earns that title by building something up that no one can claim isn't his, because it becomes the fruits of his labor. His Asgard, whether that's a place, a diplomatic mission to settle his people on a new nation on Earth, or even just a new ship that he captains in search of a new homeland. Of course, he lacks this skillset by the time of Endgame, but it would have been a place for him to start, especially with the guidance of other people, Valkyrie, the Avengers. Stark tech, the Guardians' knowledge of deep space, something, that gets him started on the next project of his life, the great project, the magnum opus. A new Asgard. The other path was for him to find wisdom in all his loss, a moment to question why his father was so wise, and yet let so much suffering happen. If the first path was about his being king, this is about the concept of godhood. Maybe he does learn magic of the sort Odin had, and he begins to try predicting the future himself. He now has all this spare time to wonder how his father made decisions. And this is where the concept of Odin letting Ragnarok happen and yet choosing to protect certain things comes into play. Maybe Thor joins the Guardians or the Avengers, but in a role where he learns how to prevent tragedy, and when it isn't preventable, not just to avenge it as they had been doing, but to also prepare means to minimize damage. Prevent incidents like Ultron from ballooning so fast, even if he also accepts that those incidents still happen. Start moving him towards a path where he no longer attempts to take most threats head-on, but do more leadership-style work like gathering information and passing it to the right people to avoid disaster. And before he notices it he becomes as wise as Odin is in myth. This allows him to pass on the hammer to someone else willing to fight (I mean who the hell is Beta Ray Bill anyway), as he goes on this long journey of self-discovery. Thor regains his godhood by passing into myth, no longer present at the frontline, and yet his information, wisdom, and ability to call on allies allows people to understand that he's begun to do good in the world, in a different way. Both of these ideas aren't necessarily mutually exclusive, and they're potentially so long-term that it could go on subtly for movie after movie after movie, in the background. That is, they're not necessarily what fits in a Thor movie, and yet those are what I thought are supposed to be his intended end goals. Odin, as a father figure, is so important to Thor's idea of what he must be, that I always believed that his destiny was to become a king or an overgod, just like his father, but in his own way. The problem is I don't think Hollywood is even capable of understanding this, because the original Thor movie was centered around this idea of a great father figure. And they'll never let that drive the story.
@@djcoasters2732 Honestly, it would need a lot of context, because Thor's first flaw is presented in the context that he would wage a war where he'd risk lives for his pride. Him dying in battle would take a lot of context where he's somehow doing it as a king and not as a warrior.
Him going back and building from the ashes of Asguard would fit better with the mythical counterpart; the shape of Mjolnir is more like a mallet used in older age construction, than a weapon of war.
I loved the first Thor movie. I hated the second and I thought that Ragnarok was way too campy. In Ragnarok, it felt like it was more about Hulk and Valkyrie than about Thor. They did do pretty much all of the necessary character development for him in the first movie though, the only thing they had to do to prep Thor for the final set of Avengers movies was to break him by killing most of his people. Love and Thunder looks dumb as heck, I probably won’t be seeing it. I don’t see how they can justify making Natalie Portman the new Thor, when she wasn’t present for most of the series. He didn’t even mention her in Ragnarok or any of the ensemble movies. I think he mentioned her once, that they had broken up or something. It was dumb. Don’t bring her back.
@@najumobi yeah, I think just the once that I remember though. She hasn’t been a prominent character and it’s almost like they forgot she existed. I get that Natalie Portman wanted out, but they could’ve either recast her or not ever have her come back. Bringing her back now is a waste. Give Thor a new girlfriend and keep Thor as Thor. He is a person, not a title to be passed on to someone else.
The Thor movie would have been so much better if it didn’t take place in the desert. The mountains of Oregon or another Midwest state would have been spectacular. Lush greens and running water.
They mentioned her in Ragnarok, in that a passerby brought up that she broke up with him off-screen. Twas silly because there was no need to do that at all because she was irrelevant and if they hadn't, she could've been one of the people snapped away which would over further cement "broken Thor" and make "dudebro Thor" more believable
New movie should’ve been Thor completing something challenges to become king. Think the trials of Hercules. Bringing peace to each realm one by one and uniting them under the banner of Asgard. Slaying beasts that would bring about the end of worlds, wrestling black holes and recounting galaxies with his bare hands. Those are in my opinion, the best Thor stories. The ones that imitate ancient legends, copying the works of the real Thor
They dont know what to do with Thor after his epic build up in Infinity War, so they had to deconstruct him and make him fat its not hard to write for him, going searching the galaxy to fight stronger foes incase they have another Thanos situation.
He was basically at fault for half of all life in the universe being gone, you can’t really blame him for falling into a deep depression when just before that he lost his father, his brother, and almost all of his people too
I'm just sick of how Thor in his stand alone movies he always has to go on this journey where he has to learn a lesson and how Stan Lee has said he's the the most powerful hero and he's just nerfed. I was so happy and actually got a little giddy in Ragnarok and Infinity War where he went God Mode and just wrecked shit.
I think the best Thor scene/moment was in "Avengers 1", when he wanted to grab the hammer, but hesitated, because he was asking himself if he's realy worthy, last time he wanted to grab Mjôlnir like that in a different movie he "wasn't" worthy, even though he did think he's worthy
The sad part is the comic run had some good aspects. Jane Foster had a real internal struggle with dying slowly every time she used the power and she had to make that choice. W/O that it'll flop
It's extremely important that women take over what men have built because that means they're just as valuable as the being whose body they cannibalize.
The craziest thing is that Breaking Bad franchise (one of the best tv show ever) is now fallen to the same trap. A protagonist was written out of his own story to make way for a strong female character (albeit very well written) to overshadow him.
Does it really get that bad in S6? The only moment that sticks out to me is after Jimmy nearly dies in the desert and is no position to bandy words with Lalo.
@@thedragon8355 Except that what made him “Saul” in first place like his style, his car and his office are not from his idea at all. It’s from his wife’s idea and whenever shit hits the fans, it’s always his wife who stood up and solved the situation while “the protagonist” stood in the background saying nothing. That’s why Breaking Bad will always be better than Better Call Saul. Walter White is a way better protagonist who really handled things himself and moved the plot forward.
I agree. They tried to make thors depression funny when, he’s literally had everything taken from him. Yet let wanda get Sympathy, in her depression. While she inslaved a whole town. It’s not a Thor movie, it’s a Mighty Thor movie. I say it’s about time we get someone actually worthy to be the Mighty Thor, because regular Thor wasn’t Thor enough. I wonder if Thor is going to be needed, but doesn’t step up, so the “Mighty Thor” saves the day. After that, Vanilla Thor must find himself to be worthy, again. Didn’t he go through this in his first movie???
It would be better to have Thor killed after trying to fight Thanos back in that ship. makes 100% more sense than deceiving, somewhat backstabbing and coward Loki dying honorably after trying to take Thanos (right after he showed his strength against Thor). But... Marvel is way past the point of no return already
From Thor Ragnarok: "Hi Thor, Sorry Jane dumped you" "She didn't dump me, it was a mutual dumping" From Thor: Love and Thunder: Jane gets Thor's hammer, powers, and even his very name.

Much as i hate to admit it, Rippa has it right. The ANAD Marvelle Comics are the template for most, if not all, this Phase4 nonsense. This IS the timeline we are in.
Gary from Nerdrotic called this stuff off in 2014. he saw what was happening in his comic book shop and, more importantly, kept records of what was selling. It’s very telling how Marvel kept saying how many copies were shipped, which is not the same as sold. In fact many of these comics were forced on the shops as they didn’t order them.

As someone who's not super into the MCU, even I could tell you why Jane becoming new Thor wouldn't work, just from examining her roles I, the movies. Thor 1: Standard love interest. Not bad, but not especially remarkable. Thor 2: their relationship is cited as one of the weakest parts. Ragnarok: they've broken up, largelyin attempt to address complaints of the latter movie. This movie: she's back and replacing him. Forget whether the actress is capable of selling it, that's just NOT a natural arc.
It’s being forced on a number of levels. As much as I like Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and the Thor Trilogy, this movie and her character sounds like a giant hot mess.
And most importantly, it's been stressed over and over that you have to be 'worthy'. And not just some ordinary kind of worthiness because not even the most heroic people are usually worthy enough. Why would anyone suspect Jane Foster is even vaguely worthy enough? When has she ever done anything that would suggest that she is more worthy than almost literally every other hero? Never?
Scarlett witch replaces dr strange. Lady thor replace thor. Cap is falcon. Ironman is gone. Replace A characters for B character, so this is where the MCU dies.
Given how many legacy characters have either died (like Ironman) or no longer have the actor on contract (like Cpt. America) they didn't have much choice if they wanted to keep this going on for decades. Also the Comics have done this long before and the movies are mimicking it. Don't be surprised if we see Riri "Ironheart" in upcoming years.
@@MALICEM12 The difference with the comics is that in the comics, the original ultimately always comes back, no matter how contrived they'll have to be. FFS, they even brought back Wolverine after totally-for-realz-he's-never-coming-back killing him (for at least the _first_ time).
Given the director's apathy towards the Thor fans as well as the established Thor mythos, lore and characters when he said "I'll ruin your mythos in heartbeat, baby" like a smug, arrogant, piece of shit asshole like he's the second coming of Rian Johnson, I'm not at all excited to see this film. This could very well be the first movie where I buy a ticket to another movie in order to see this film so I don't have to give money to hack writers and director who made this film. And even if I do that, it's possible that I'll still walk out of the theater even when I do that. @@kicknowledgesmith8608 the problem with that is that this still falls under the whole bait and switch tactic to get people in seats. With Thor’s hammer being destroyed by Hella, how is Jane Foster supposed to gain his powers? Odin added the “worthy” clause to Mjolnier, Stormbreaker doesn’t have it
If the previous films had been a bit different, this could have been really interesting. Thor could have dedicated himself to being the king of what remains of Asgard, leaving the hammer for some one else to take up the mantle.
That's the thing right, I actually wouldn't mind him passing over the hammer to someone "worthy" if he actually stayed king. It's just insulting what they did with him and his family talk about royal assassination. Infinity War was a return to form, and for me, he was the best part of that movie. I liked his "I don't care who this Thanos guy thinks he is, I'm going to kill him" attitude.
I understand Thor being mad depressed and rusty. But still.
They could’ve redeemed Thor in Endgame by simply having him go into the multiverse (mini verse?) for twenty seconds earth time, equaling five or ten years alternate universe time, and return physically and mentally in shape and ready for battle.
@@gianthand8130 the issue is they turned his problems into a joke
@@ripvanwinkle7689 I can sorta agree with this.
My favorite Thor was the one from Infinity War. He was determined, looked super cool, was very strong but still had that slight comedic edge to him with mostly dry humor. I think the way he was in that movie worked the best.
"I bid the farewell, and good luck Morons!"
I loved how he was actually powerful in that movie as well as Ragnarok. Now they're just gonna Nerf him again
And it will diminish female Thor too. Instead of her being a new hero with her own story and arc, she will inevitably just be "female Thor".

Must be a variant then, they could brush it off like that. Marvel is know for gender swaping the variant version too like female loki.

Eric hit the nail on the head there. Not just for the comics and film industry, but for all the culture justice warriors who want to spread their toxicity around.

What? That would make a good movie. People don’t want that. They’d rather see “The Message”, obviously. I’m fact, Odin should be killed off again.
Except when you think for two seconds and remember Thor is his NAME not a goddamn title or mantle
Thor needs to be king of Asgard as it should be. Anything else is an insult to the character.

Agree 100%
She couldn't even lift the fake mjolnir when this was announced. ..not worthy.
I bet the excuse is that when the hammer got destroyed the enchantment got removed or something, so anyone can use it lol.

I appreciated the first iterations of Batman and Spiderman from before I was born and the Hulk TV show was still around on re-airs. Then came the Batman movies and I wanted nothing more than to see all my superheroes put on the big screen. They were theatrical thrill rides for me.

@@doublep1980 While I agree thankfully a lot of shows are tanking on Disney plus. Hawkeye didn't get renewed and Moon Knight has low ratings

5:13 They did this exact thing with Captain Marvel in Endgame. They all of favorite characters hamfistedly sing her praise and stare in awe at her and it just felt like such an obvious attempt at them trying to force the audience to like and accept her as the new face of the MCU.
She is like Marvel’s version of Roman Reigns from 2015 through 2018. Except even that Roman Reigns is more tolerable and more believable.

That's probably going to happen.

Chato had a good observation that everything is becoming a friends episode. Ragnarok was my least favorite of the Thor movies. It was too jokey and began the deconstruction of both Thor & Loki.
Now there's way too much character derailment for the sake of comedy in the MCU, which gets a bit grating at times.
It's sad.

It did for me.
Truth. And it has been downhill ever since.
In a sense, Avengers Endgame was more than just a title.

(Well, depending on the spin off story, he tries to save certain things, yes, but in the end, Ragnarok thematically is always set in stone there.)
There were two possible paths I would have wanted for Thor to have grown towards.
And they'll never let that drive the story.
honestly, a last stand for Thor would've been the best ending.
@@danieleash2870 agree
It's not that they are incapable of understanding, it's that they don't care. That isn't their goal.
He brought her up in endgame
@@najumobi yeah, I think just the once that I remember though. She hasn’t been a prominent character and it’s almost like they forgot she existed. I get that Natalie Portman wanted out, but they could’ve either recast her or not ever have her come back. Bringing her back now is a waste. Give Thor a new girlfriend and keep Thor as Thor. He is a person, not a title to be passed on to someone else.
Same.

They dont know what to do with Thor after his epic build up in Infinity War, so they had to deconstruct him and make him fat
its not hard to write for him, going searching the galaxy to fight stronger foes incase they have another Thanos situation.

To be fair, he is just going back to Ragnarok Thor. And people loved that movie.
Exactly. Kinda pathetic. Instead of, you know, trying to rebuild Asgard and try to get over his problems that way, instead he becomes a fat gamer.
He was the best part of Infinity War for me. But I didn't like him in Ragnarok. Goofy and stupid. Oh and his bigger sister was 5x stronger than him.
I'm pretty sure she is going to be ill in the movie
It's extremely important that women take over what men have built because that means they're just as valuable as the being whose body they cannibalize.
The craziest thing is that Breaking Bad franchise (one of the best tv show ever) is now fallen to the same trap. A protagonist was written out of his own story to make way for a strong female character (albeit very well written) to overshadow him.
Except for trans women. They get to take over what biological women have built.
Does it really get that bad in S6? The only moment that sticks out to me is after Jimmy nearly dies in the desert and is no position to bandy words with Lalo.

As someone who's not super into the MCU, even I could tell you why Jane becoming new Thor wouldn't work, just from examining her roles I, the movies.

This was bound to happen, seeing how the comics have started pulling this shit years ago.
