  • Now that I've had a chance to get my thoughts in order, here's my assessment of the Thor Love And Thunder trailer. Will this movie redeem Thor after Endgame turned him into a clown, or destroy him to make way for Lady Thor? Find out here.

Valkyrie isn’t a drunk woman, she’s a deserting soldier that turned to capturing and trading slaves, who were forced to fight to the death, all to fuel her alcoholism, which is a million times worse. And how was she punished for this? She was left in charge. There’s no chance noble Asgardians would follow such a piece of shit, knowing how she behaved after ONE defeat.

What do bad writers do when they get to write Thor? "Oh, let's make him unworthy for the 23434th time." Thor has been deemed unworthy on shaky reasons and then worked his way to being worthy countless times. After seeing him put himself to the point of death and past the point of death a few times, fighting against evil forces for real life decades, we know who he is: someone who always ends up putting the lives of others above his own and fighting till his last breath to stop evil. If that is not a hero, then what is?

I remember how "Thor Ragnarok" ended with Thor taking up the mantle of King of Asgard and how proud I was for him. He learned humility and the importance of selflessness, had been pushed out of his comfort zone as a privileged royal in order to stand on his own two feet, lost his parents, his eye, and his homeworld, all of which led to him earning the role of king. Annnnd then in "Avengers: Endgame", he's reduced to a drunken manchild who is more concerned with playing videogames and eating until he's an obese stereotype rather than leading the survivors of Asgard and the Snap. At the end of the film, Thor decides to hang out with the Guardians of the Galaxy rather than accept his royal responsibilities and gives the position to Valkyrie, who had so far done nothing to suggest that she was deserving or even qualified for the job. Thor worked his way up to being king, becoming not only a worthy leader but also a good person, suffering physically and emotionally to improve himself. Meanwhile, Valkyrie is just given the title of "king" without having to work for it. I mean, in the "Thor: Love and Thunder" trailer, we see her attending some kind of important meeting and she looks f***ing bored. Yeah, that's definitely someone you'd want to have running things: someone who seems as though she'd rather be anywhere else instead of a person that respects the position they've been given and the responsibility that comes with it. I'd rather follow Fat Thor instead of a miserable, smug and condescending person like her.

Portman ditched the franchise when it was pulling in mediocre numbers, but once Thor became a billion dollar brand she was eager to get another big paycheck. Through Endgame, Thor had appeared in three solo films and four Avengers flicks, and the best Thor stories were all without the Jane Foster character. In other words, Thor improved as a character no thanks to Portman, who thought the MCU wasn't worth her time. But now that they turned around Thor as a brand, she's back.

There were some good fight scenes, great special effects and a few funny moments, but the movie was drug down by two things (spoiler alert):
    1) Taika is his own worst enemy. The movie was filled with silliness and juvenile humor (even moreso than Thor: Ragnarok), the sort that is more likely to elicit an eye-roll and a groan than a laugh, and bouncing back and forth between the silliness and the efforts at making Gor a truly haunting - and haunted - villain clashed terribly, making it almost impossible to take the film seriously when it wanted you to.
    2) I don't think Disney could push the gay thing harder if they wanted to. Korg is gay, Korg's dads were gay, Valkyrie is bisexual, Heimdall's 13 yo kid is a transsexual (complete with a 'dead-naming' lecture) and even Miek is crossdressing... I suspect that there were more than a few parents who brought their children with them to see some light family entertainment and were not at all prepared for the conversations they had to have walking out of the theater (a la Lightyear).
There were some other minor complaints (with Mjolnir and Stormbreaker, we have to watch Thor fight with Zeus' lightning bolt the whole time - a Greek God's weapon which somehow has the power to give anyone, or everyone, have the power of Thor???), but the two above are going to be what ultimately hurts the film. They should have taken out the five or ten dumbest jokes and given us more time with Gor to really set up the tortured soul that finds eventually finds redemption. I think this movie is going to end up being one of Marvel's least successful outings thus far despite all of the stellar talent attached to it.
Also, for those keeping score, we now have a female Thor, a female Loki, a female Captain America, a female Hawkeye and a female Ant-Man with a female Hulk, a female Black Panther and a female Iron Man on the way.

The message from Marvel these days is that identity doesn't matter. Any character can be any other character. No one is special or unique, because they can all be replaced by someone identical, or even superior.
They also love the notion that everything is a "mantle". Whereas Spider-Man used to be the superhero *identity* of Peter Parker, he is now just a placeholder. He has the mantle for now, but it can and will be passed along.
The worst is Thor, however, because Jane didn't "adopt the name" of Thor and didn't become Lady Thor. She actually *became* Thor (according to marvel and several fans) though I am not sure how that is supposed to work, since it's his actual birth name and not just a title.

How can anyone else be "Thor?"
His name is literally Thor Odinson...
When Steve Rogers wielded the hammer in Endgame, that was a huge deal, but he didn't all the sudden become Thor Rogers.
Same with "King of Asgard." What exactly has Valkyrie done to be worthy of this? A semi-love interest, who just happens to know Thor at the end of Endgame while he joy rides around the Universe? You'd think that at the end of Thor's character arc, he would see that there are VERY few people who are worthy of such jobs (Steve, Vision) and he would make the right choice to lead his people. This comes after his father straight up told him, Asgard is not a place, it is a people. Well, fuck. He just straight up deserts both and has apparently learned nothing from his father's wise words, nor his own life.

"Thor goes on a journey of self discovery" is pretty fucking shit when you consider that was his origin story. The guy goes hundreds of years acting like a prick, then suddenly Odin gets a wild hair up his ass and decides to humble Thor. Why? Because Thor attacked guys Marvel's take on Aesir (Oh, I'm sorry, "Asgardians," because we're all five-year-olds who can't use proper terminology) were already prone to attacking.
Then we get that again with Ragnarok, where he rediscovers his true power after losing his prosthetic hand phallus.
Then we get that again with Infinity War/Endgame, where he's coping with mounting losses and not killing Thanos properly, but at least he gets a bigger hand phallus.
Now we're getting it again with this, and his sort-of love interest nobody cared about gets his original hand phallus reassembled.
It's amazing how many times you have to turn your life around in one decade after so many centuries of never needing to worry about it.
Honestly, this movie would be amazing if it involved the deaths of both Jane and Valkyrie, because nothing else about them would be interesting. Unfortunately, it's another Taika Watiti piece, and even anti-woke people are prone to giving him excuses because he makes sure to include a few puerile giggles into his movies. So that guy's gonna continue riding the woke train of Hollywood because he's a convenient blend of two ethnic groups that gives him a free pass, while hailing from Hollywood's favorite playground the past couple decades.
But from what I've been hearing, this movie has been a nightmare behind the scenes and they're hurrying to fix things, so I can't wait to see what that'll be.

Take Valkyrie. She went from being an irresponsible, broken drunk in Ragnarok to the mature, steady leader of New Asgard.

For the love of Mike why can't we have good strong intelligent male leads anymore also why do they have to keep changing characters race just bring in a character that's already African American and stop changing the orgins of other's same can go for gender swapping. At this point it breaks my heart to see marvel going in this direction as a fan and if they continue this path I will no longer follow along. I feel like something that could actually have a lot of potential to be a good story for Thor, would be him learning to become a father or father figure. it would provide him a new situation to grow as a character and would just be so much more emotional if this is a story of passing on his legacy. Thor really doesn't have any family left, and I just feel like that's kind of a missed opportunity to just forget about that.
the family he knew for over a thousand years is just completely gone, and at this point if he doesn't pass on his legacy to his own child then his family bloodline is just gone forever. if they just pass it on to Jane Foster then what did Thor suffer for, he lost everyone he loved most and now he just gets to fade away as well, that's just stupid.
if they are going to just get ride of him in this movie they should at least give him a proper send off that honors all that he has gone through. Having him pass on his legacy to his child as his father did for him, it would just fit so much more interesting if they took it in a direction like that.
Becoming a father and starting a new family could be something that would provide so much more new character to Thor. Like his constant feeling of being unworthy in every movie, now that could be a feeling of fear that he isn't worthy of being a father.
Thor becoming a father would be a life changing thing for him, it would just be completely different then anything he has gone through already.
Thor still has so much more room for growth but saving the universe again really wouldn't actually do much other then bore a large amount of the audience.
It would also just be a good relatable story for a lot of people, I mean just think of all the people who grew up with these movies and now have families of there own.
Now sadly I don't think they would do a story about a soon to be father dealing with self doubt and anxiety at his new responsibility. Especially since that would go against "The Message" I mean a male character whos problems can't be solved be a strong female, why that's just unthinkable.

To be fair, the first time the character of Jane Foster donned the mantle of Thor was in 1978 in Marvel's What If Volume 10. She fights against Loki who is leading an invasion of Asgard. After which, she gets "promoted" to Goddess, the hammer is given to Donald Blake, and she marries Odin. Yep... you read that correctly.
The 2014 run for Jane Foster donning the mantle of Thor was actually pretty good IMHO. People always fail to mention that Nick Fury was the reason Thor Odinsson became unworthy in the first place, and I thought Foster's brief run with the cancer angle was good. In fact, if comic books didn't always insist on bringing dead characters back to life, it would have been one of the best send-offs for a character they've ever done.

Some films you say "you need to watch this on the big screen" because it is the only place to do it justice. I feel this will be the kind of film to say the same line about, but only in a superficial sense. As in the spectacle; visuals, sounds, etc will be great in the cinema itself, I'm sure of it. Marvel know how to fulfil that formula - but if you tried to watch it at home, maybe even on a laptop like I often do... it will fall flat entirely. Compared to say a film like 1917, a great spectacle in itself but also a cinematic experience that doesn't need all the bells and whistles to be appreciated as a good film. So yeah, I think this will be fun to watch, and I'm sure I'll find myself a good cinema to watch it in, but it won't be a cinematic masterpiece by any stretch.

@@reviewwithyou2 Yeah some of the fat jokes were horribly done, it could've been handled better. But I still argue that Fat Thor is a better attempt at seeing someone cope with depression and PTSD than they have done before. Sure, he could've slimmed up and dropped the weight, but he didn't feel deserving or worthy after failing to kill Thanos the first time. He gets panic attacks and doubts himself more than anyone else. The man becomes a walking example of self-hatred, pity, and hopelessness. The absolute look of joy in his eyes when he calls Mjolnir back and it answers really hammers it home (pun intended). He's. Still. Worthy.
It would've been cheap to have him go back to "normal" and pretend his mental issues are gone. That's like telling someone who's had a depressive episode to "just feel better" and thinking it works.
I hope Drinker's idea for a script is right, cause it would make sense for him to try and leave it all behind, only to learn that now is the best time to take back the mantle of Thor Odinson, rather than bailing and giving it to Jane.

Man, Valkyrie was such a rotten piece of shit of a character in Ragnarok. Even when she was nearly blackout drunk she was shown as never failing, always getting the upper hand on the hero and at no point having a moment of humility or regret for all the awful things she's done as _goddamn slave trader._ The only "failure" she's shown having is in her backstory, where she was merely one of the many soldiers falling against a formidable enemy, and the only reason we saw her lose that battle was that the enemy was also a woman. She's all the while arrogant, pretentious and disgusting yet she's instantly forgiven by Thor, never taken to task for all the terrible crimes she's committed against the hundreds, probably thousands of innocent people who indirectly met their death thanks to her. But of course, who better than her to rule a community of exiled people? As a king no less, which means she clearly wasn't chosen by them.
The worst part is that we all know this damn trailer is very likely some bait and switch crap that's going to pretend Thor is the protagonist of the movie while the whole thing is going to be Jane and Valkyrie being best friends/lovers as Thor takes a backseat.

@@jhonatancock2302 Nah, I think I'll not bother looking for conspiracies and just enjoy a nice subversion of expectations.

@@ShadowSonic2 How is "I'll send a monster to kill her" anything even resembling "thinking outside the box"? And how does this sort of thing qualify as "subverting expectations"? It's been done in MCU films literally since the first one. Iron Man can't defeat Iron Monger on his own, so he lures him into a giant beam. The Avengers can't defeat the aliens on their own, so they send a missile to their mothership. It's really not a rare situation.
