if 70% of stores fail, all you have to do to succeed is open 4 stores, 3 of which will fail and the 4th one can buy out the inventory from the other 3. It's the perfect business plan!!

Each failed LGS adds a single drop of grease to Rudy's hair
My current LGS opened in 2000 and is still running strong . The owner opened it using his own personal comic collection from the 70s and 80s and his own magic and Pokémon from the 90s as base inventory . Amazes me how he did it but he said at first he survived on comic subscriptions from customers and mtg single sales and selling warhammer figures he painted all through the nights .... hats off to u Tom .. thanks for hanging in there today still 😊🤗
He sounds legit
This kind of videos are why I've been watching Rudy for the last 4 years.
The guy has what he has because he legitimately knows what he is doing operating a business
@@jimoelfke5801 Cannot argue with that. Starting at the exact right point in time and making the moves he has, as well as all of the content he puts out, has done it too. He works full-full-full time.
I know your community isn't always crazy over these videos, but your educational ones like this are my favourite
Im subscribed for them, dont even watch his other stuff.
* I meant I dont even watch them, sorry typo its fine if you like that, just not my thing.
Your example about a store having maybe a single box of the few newest sets was particularly powerful for me. Of the few card stores that exist in my county, every single one of them are like that.
The only remaining LGS in my area doesn't have any type of storage. Just a shop front and a couple of open boxes of boosters. I know the owners reasonably well, there is no warehouse / stock anywhere..
@Aaron Brincefield So if you work over the weekend and sell a case of boosters you make about $150 gross profit, right? Most flea markets take a commission of $40-50 bucks a day, so asuming no fuel costs, damage, insurance, loss, theft after a full weekend you net $50 pre-tax? Sounds like a lot of fun if you love magic cards, but it also confirms Rudy's 'I am special' video.
that would explain why “a company started with 10k and within a few years over their head in debt.” it’s sad but takes some square math. if u also value wizards doesnt delve into the secondary market which means they always sell in pack form ... it’s still sad. this set of things means it’s the store’s one chance to profit where neither the customer or wizards can. but then your skill at buying and selling would cause you to want to buy your own product. like my local store? heh because i got told a while ago the 2xm vip is just sitting in the storage room and not for sale. bought his own product.
or isnt it like he couldve been a wizard but at that moment unimplimented his powers and became just an ordinary person. someone pinch me.
Also, still please end every video like that.

Rudy...thank you for sharing this information with us. You dont have to tell us anything about your business but you do and its very valuable. I appreciate you so very much. Have a wonderful day everyone!
Great video Rudy. As someone who is heavily in the Finance and Business industry, it's difficult to talk about a subject like this, even though it's so important to recognize. I applaud you for doing so, especially in such a reasonable way.
I feel like Rudy’s background reflects his mental state.
And provides subtle tips on upcoming market movements.

heard the "have to fail to succeed" line a few times over the past couple of weeks. Definitely relevant thank you for sharing this point.
These are the videos that keep me coming back. I don't give a shit about Rudy cracking open boxes. This is at least better than any High School level business and finance classes and probably rivals some college - while being entertaining and relevant.
Rudy, keep doing what you're doing, you speak truth in a world of Timmy's and victims. You're the hero we need AND deserve.
Rudy I'm gonna binge your channel because against my better judgement I was missing out on all the free advice. Thanks for the channel man
Rudy, I am a huge sucker for the thunderdome videos, but I have to agree with all the folks who are saying these type of videos are the best. Really shows the quality of the channel.
Bravo Rudy! Thanks for the captivating words at the tail end of this video - wishing your business endeavors the best in 2021~!

@@brokengames9020 Rudy makes a video showcasing the dangers of opening a store or trying to get involved in collectibles, and once AGAIN you show up to dismiss all of it and crap all over the comments.
WHY do you watch this channel?
@@brokengames9020 Well guess it's a good thing I have investments of all kinds and didn't go full Timmy maxing out my credit cards to buy singles. I just recently decided put some money into MTG. I like the idea that I can actually invest into something I enjoy playing (EDH). Even if it goes to shit, its less than 10% of my portfolio, and I can find creative new uses for worthless magical cardboards I suppose.
I'm not going to mention any of the things I'm about to mention.
Sensei Rudy here to tell yah, it's okay to make mistakes, its okay to fail. Those experiences make you stronger, smarter, and "Ultimately" happier.
And it also makes Rudy richer ;)
Had a failure of my own. Basically moved to Florida for a job only for it not to turn out well in the end for me. Made me realize that I had to go back to NY for a solid chance of getting a job, and now I'm with a better company and doing pretty well for myself. Sometimes you gotta eat shit to appreciate fine dining.
8:03 You must become one with the cardboard. Dwell in the basement until you can't tell the difference between you and the product anymore. Until the cardboard becomes an extension of yourself. Until you live and draw sustenance from the volatile ink fumes emanating from it. Such is the *Riddle of Cardboard.*

I see a new Rudy video I like it. It’s just that simple.
Would love a video on the pro's / con's of setting up a one man llc vs. just doing everything yourself and in your own name.
I like this one for sure . Very motivational . Love the ending lol
Love these videos
Rudy, that video reminded me of the evolution of life in the planet and how extinctions are almost as important for the evolution of life as the creation of species. When business fail they open the space for new ones to take their place in the ecosystem which leads to the development of life
this is why I patronize my local independent stores but sometimes I'm tempted to drop into Barnes and Noble Which I appreciate as well

one addition to the idea of generational wealth...just as genetics and wealth can be ruined in as little as 1 generation or as much as 3, at which point the family is far removed from how they once were, it always takes longer to rebuild or build initially. So 3 generations minimum: the first, being the pioneers with great work ethic, attitude, and goals they stick to that begin to save a little, put something away fro the future and have kids responsibly; even if they are working class poor or just shy of low middle class for the first years of their working adult life ( age 16 to mid to late 20s). Then if things went well and by the time children are growing up, they see their parents are now middle class by "1st world standard", and are taught to emulate and reach for that same level of success, but go further. Eventually by the time the kids are old enough to work, they are either starting at the same age or in college until they are ready for a higher paying career ( hopefully...lotta folks with degrees never did nothing too, ironically), and the whole family is medium to upper middle class in another decade or two after that point. That is generation #2. Eventually grandchildren are sired, and assuming there are still good familial ties and adherences to the aforementioned tenets that made the family the "success" that it became, in another 20+ years, the family should not only be well off, but have enough squirreled away in diversified places for wealth growth ( not just in a bank...but investments) that they may well be nouveau riche or even slight upper class. Thats merely 3 generations of work toward wealth; from the time that the first was old enough to begin making money. 60 solid years is all it takes, but thats still not a short span of time, being a bit more than half a life time for most anyones life expectancy. Plus if you think about it, the biggest business families that lurk behind our species collective socities, and have tremendous wealth have been working toward that end for more than a handful of generations, going back well over 120 years to before the late 19th century. Sure we have billionaires here and there, but they didnt just get there over night. They were mor ethan just lucky too, as one can easily discover theres a lot of those "affluential" bloodlines floating all over the place on our little planet. Anways I am done rambling...Ciao for now. :P
This is the stuff I’m here for. Thanks for Papa Rudy for the real talk time.
Smart. Extra dose of hair gel. Shaves off a few cents on the dollar off the price when negotiating the acquisition of bankrupt inventories. 📈
Great closing! Like a pro!
Regarding the comment about WotC's 2020 lesson. I'm not quite convinced that Wizards has gotten themselves over Local stores and organized play. I think those are vital if not mandatory to bring new players to the game. I believe the people that kept WotC going through 2020 were able to do so because they originally had organized play in their life. Should that go away, I do think the overall product would take a hit.
For example, there's just so much webcam EDH the playerbase can take. It's great to have, but I think it serves as a temporary stabilizer for the game, not a growing device.
These videos are timeless.
For me, the reason I continue to put money into Magic is because I'm looking forward to playing at my LGS again. I imagine that I'm not alone on this. Hasbro will need to continue to support LGS's to keep players like me engaged.
I'm sorry dude but I would be cautious with that strategy. When LGS's close, the player base falls off rapidly or goes online completely and you may get stuck with a collection gathering (pun intended) dust. Maybe you don't mind, I don't know....
Rudy becoming more and more like wolfman jack. I expect fangs to appear shortly
I have to disagree about it not affecting the game. For every massive CFB/SCG/CK there's hundreds of small stores that are barely surviving. For most people to really enjoy magic they have to be able to gather at those stores to play FNM or commander night and socialize etc. The only reason 2020 has been fine for WOTC is because people are still buying product and singles in the expectation that they'll be able to return to that again in 2021 after a vaccine and have a use for those cards. Personally if I knew my LGS was going to close I would almost immediately try to start selling out of almost every card I have, maybe keeping 1-2 decks and some stuff I like for nostalgia. The same can be said about competitive play, there's a reason all 3 top long lasting successful TCGs have a competitive scene (MTG/YGO/PKMN) because it is required for players to have the drive to be interested and the ecosystem for everything. Even if you're a casual that scene still affects you and the market massively. If there's no competitive scene then suddenly the majority of new cards at release are even more worthless than they already are. There's no winning decklists or metagame to learn from and copy and tweak and theorize. Without this you might as well be collecting stamps or coins and while those are cool interesting hobbies I'm sure most people that got into TCGs aren't in it for that.
there are multiple books named "the tipping point". What book is Rudy referring to?

Sega Genesis Wall street kid sealed...good choice. The background has taken a life of it's own. The back ground is Alphas personality, wins and failures. You can look at Silent Hill to understand the underlying metaphors and choices that reflect Rudy by seeing what he has in the background of each and every video.
Literally eating a 5 layer burrito from T Bell when you mentioned it.
It's a sad truth that so many make their fortunes from debt markets. Like a plant in a self contained biome, parts need to fall off and die to feed and nourish the next growing area. Eventually that area comes to the end if it's lifespan and dies feeding the next.
11:41 Got it! Great book! REading it!
Rudy never failed me.
I thought there would be an update and story to your Kaladesh Inventions box.
I’ve been to lots of LGS in the last few years where they have run out of current set boosters and tell me their distributor will have to get them another box. I think that a lot of these stores don’t put a lot of capital into MTG because there are so many other games that are popular that they have a cushion
I've been waiting for this video
It is OK to FAIL, but it is never OK to not TRY.
legendary outro
my LGS went out of business as the owner decided that it would be easier to retire now with the pandemic than it would be when he's actually got all of his regular customers able to come into his store and play lol
HOWEVER...it takes a keen mind to discern WHICH SPECIFIC "collectibles" are actually gonna increase in value, if not hold it for a long long time. Dont follow the route of just buying whatever, because you will go down the disastrous route of those that bought Beannie Babies and extra fancy BArbie Dolls in the mid to late 1990s...I saw a lot of adults doing that, and I just shook my head and told them " DONT BUY THOSE! I am a kid, and I am telling you they will be worthless one day soon!" Yet sadly like all my predictions that come true...few to none listen. BEWARE THE 2020s!!! YOU ARE WARNED!
Exactly! Take Secret Lairs for example, everyone jumped on them like they were gold plated Timmy trophies, and now the bulk of them are worth *less* than MSRP. The market didn't care for most of them, and picked the ones people actually liked, because the supply was more than the demand. Of course there were initial hype, but scalpers were the only one to make a profit from them, and mainly from the investors! Because the investors believed if they held off, they'd make a killing. Little did they understand that the market wasn't going to play nice with a major influx of similar products.
It'll be amusing seeing how people handle the upcoming Pokemon bubble, because it's blowing up to massive proportions.
We need a FAIL PAIL for buckets of Rudy's Tacos. Extra cheese please!
I have learned more from my mistakes than my successes.
In fact i dont think I've learned anything till i have failed..
But man what an expensive lesson
The thing about bankruptcy is what are the actual real life punishments for going bankrupt? Bad credit? It's not like you can go to jail right? I feel like the stakes aren't really high enough to dissuade people from opening up stupid business ideas and taking on too much debt they can never pay off.
Please compress your audio, that peak around 2:44 almost blew out my eardrums
But I graduated with an econ degree, and all of your content brings together my interest in MTG with those concepts. You really inspire me to be a better hustler
I like this video,Alot of people dont understand that you need money to make money, they think they just got lucky but money doesn't last,to be truly successful and wealthy you need to work hard almost twice as hard and sometimes working a 60+ hours a week instead of 40...strange analogie but if you have ever gambled you know that it is extremely unlikely to turn 10 dollars into 10,000 dollars..I mean miracles do happen and it's not entirely impossible but HIGHLY unlikely but even if you did it would probably be years and years of playing a perfect game, knowing when to go in or not and losing a bunch here and there but not giving up so in a way..buisness is a gamble and like gambling you can afford more of a loss or string of losses if you have the capital to cover it but you can easily go broke if things just don't go to plan

The way life works is that you learn the most when you fail, as long as you try self reflection. The most successful people in life are the ones that have also failed the most. It's good to remember that.

beanie baby in the background haha
So... The MASSIVE take away that I am getting from this video is basically why Rudy has Patreons that just buy a case of every set: They are basically running a store without running a store and plan on cashing in several decades down the line just like a store would do. Because at one point he basically makes the assertion that (smart) stores just always have maybe a case and a couple sealed boxes plus whatever opened box on the shelf as inventory and when the set rotates (either from format or relevancy) they pull it and just let it sit as an asset. Basically, if you are in your 30s-ish/have five figures to throw around at any given moment, you can skip ahead to just having the inventory rather than making a profit from business as base acquisition.

Esp. since until about 3/4 of the video I thought you were talking about Magic as in Penn n Teller, or the great __________(insert fav. Magician name) hahaha. I would also like to add that this was in no way a normal Biz cycle. It was not the market being the market, it was the Wizard Biden destroying an industry that made me a shit ton of money and skills to scale, IE F&B, Bar/Nightclub/ Leisure time industry. Alot of those Biz would still be open, not forced, at times physically, to close! Also This is an extremely coincidental time, as many Boomers that went balls out and made a businesses for themselve and fam. and many are selling said Biz's cause Junior doesnt want to run a business his father started, and that leaves a great buying opportunity for M& A,.
