Do you consider this a “real” C64 game since it can’t be played on a stock system?
No
Another game I'll never play just seeing it played is awesome good vid gruz can't wait to see the next one
Of course , yes. Is Starfox a real SNES game because it uses a SFX chip? This just needs external hardware to assist.
i'm excited to see what homebrew games are made for these old systems with all the upgrades that are possible these days. most people would have to play them in emulators, but it's really cool to see these machines pushed to the limits and not just with demos.
and yeah if i went through the trouble to get the upgrades you damn well bet i would consider this a real commodore 64 game. it would just be in my homebrew folder not in my classic games folder.
Once the Genesis came out, I had a hard time convincing anyone that the Master System even existed; almost nobody had one here in the US. I had both this and Sonic 2 on Game Gear, and I'll confirm it: the SMS versions are a lot easier to play. Absolutely worth checking into, too; they're a little hard to get used to, because they're very different from the 16-bit Sonic games, but they were built for the strengths of the hardware they're on, so if you take them as their own thing, they're a lot better. This C64 version looks interesting; I've never used a Commodore 64 (we had an Apple II CE instead), but I really like how dark the Jungle Zone looks.
Everyone listen to Mommy Kojiro, these games _rock!_ I owned Sonic 2 on Game Gear and I think I borrowed Sonic 1 (the better of those two) once.
Obviously the SMS and NES systems had a superior graphics chip. However, with the correct programming the C64 can do pretty well and actually has a good sound chip for the time. It is amazing what these programmers did with the port of Sonic to the C64. It was a capable 8 bit system in the hands of good programmers who knew how to push the limits of the hardware.

I'd love to try this out on my real c64. Cloning the SuperCPU, REU, and other rare hardware expanders for the c64 are on my "to-do" list right now, so this game may be a good test for those once I get some prototypes going.
Yeah, I had a real one and a Genesis back in the day. The Genesis controller is fully compatible.
You probably should've put an epilepsy warning at 3:16. Otherwise great video.
This is really neat. I’ve been wanting to attempt this kind of thing for some time but never have the time. I’m not even sure how far I could get. Glad to see such a talented programmer managed to do it. Kudos!
Fun fact: i used to own a C64 and the Sega Genesis controller is fully compatible with it.
You made me look it up! "64JPX" just don't use the keyboard at the same time because you can fry the C64's CIA chip
Great content! I used to play my C64 with my Sega Genesis controller (same port). This would be the perfect game to play that way.
I had a game gear growing up so I'm very used to playing 8 bit sonic. It's nice to see old games get revitalized. Thanks for the info on this, I'm definitely gonna be trying it out soon
After this crap of a Monday I've had, I was overjoyed to see a new gruz video. Love you, gruz!
So glad to see you back gruz it's been awhile I was starting to worry, missed you man.
I loved this dive in to the obscure... alt version? port? I dunno what to call it but I liked it.
Keep doing whatever you feel like doing I'm enjoying it.
Wow that looks so awesome!!! I really wish i can play it... Still awesome video as always Gruz! Appreciate ya!
Grew up on the Commodore 64, absolutely love to see things like this!
Great coverage of this conversion! This and the Mario port are so elegantly handled. Too bad Nintendo has a stick way up their butt about fan games.
Thank you for making this video. Can't wait to play it now that I know it exists.
Another great video! 😄👌
I was part of The Orange Cartridge Kickstarter, this is a software defined C64 cartridge. The creator (Marcus Comstedt) sent it out with the Super-REU bitstream loaded into the cartridge and it runs Sonic the Hedgehog perfectly! I sure hope someone can take Marcus' work and turn The Orange Cartridge into a commercial product.
"It's a little on the easier side"
Hmm, don't underestimate some parts of the game. Because of the lack of rings, all the boss battles don't allow you to take any hit and some spots require precise jumps and even leaps of faith. If you 've never played it then chances are, you're gonna see the Game Over screen quite a few times.
Great video
Modern games need to take more advantage of the REU's not only because of the extra memory but the magic of the DMA chip in the REU which allows massively faster transfers of graphics and game code into the C64. The DMA is a big deal that makes this game possible. I wonder how many other Sega Master System games could be ported like this to the C64+REU?
I loved your channel.... Very good
Holy shit... I had both the master system & the Sega genesis. But because I got the genesis right when it came out I had no idea that sonic came out on the reg Sega. Mind blown!
I don't know if anyone else mentioned it, but the Master System version was also ported by Sega to the Game Gear.
We do not talk about the system that shall not be named..
Definitely do more vids like this
Wow. A lil flash warning for micro hexagon would of been nice. But other than that grate vid
I consider it a real C64 game. Granted I had a C64 and never heard about the memory expansion till today... I've been aware of the SuperCPU since the 90s though... since that is an aftermarket product I have a harder time thinking of any game that requires it as a real C64 game.
That he got that game to run like that on the 6502 at 1mhz is hard to comprehend, a port to the NES would be awesome, I hope that happens.
That's absolutely wild. I think it counts lol
9:29 "as long as no profits are involved" Would be even better if they said, as long as profits don't exceed let's say $1000 or something
Its TRUE STOCK C64, because REU is original retro expansion memory, that was originally designed and sold for C64.
The Ultimate II+ cartridge can function as a REU, although the manufacturer currently does not have any in stock
Thanks gruz
8bit Sonic is way underrated... Just like Gruz. 😜
can't wait for the ti-86 version!
How about a Ti-84 plus CE version?
I've always had a soft spot for the Master System version of Sonic 1. Yes, noticeably easier and not as speedy as the Mega Drive games, but they are still really good and extremely accessible. And the music for Bridge Zone is memorable (partly because Janet Jackson appears to have ripped it off)
Considering that in Marble Zone you can walk in lava using invincibility frames, while Brige Zone just kills you if miss a jump, as well as Jungle Zone's random waterfalls and the entirety of Sky Base, it's definitely not easier than the 16-bit version.
The developer should do gradius two on the c64
when i was a kid we didnt have any playstations but 4 master systems, we couldnt afford games but they all had pack in games, we got them given to us by other families.
So sonic on the master system was a big deal for me.
Fantastic port. It's so amazing I actually prefer it to the SMS. I run it on my Mister FPGA.
🙌 MiSTer club
The slower pace of this makes it look more fun to me than the Genesis version.
THIS WILL BE VIDEO GAMES BY 2021!
I got a c64 years ago but could not support it. Just got too many systems and with a kid I got to be responsible... but this Sonic game looks so good. Like an 8bit Sonic demake.
Yes. I use POKEY chips in all my 7800 games I make and they are still considered real.
Wrong!
Also Wrong! >=(

I want to download this
now someone port this version to the NES, and yeah i know about the Hummer Team Sonic 1 and the hack that makes it alot better, but i am talking about the master system version
Whoever ported "Super Mario Brothers" to the c64 should try doing "Super Mario Brothers 3". Then try porting "Super Mario World" over...
Have you checked out Sam's Journey? It's not Super Mario World, but it looks AMAZING for a C64 title.
@@JSRphones No, but I'm considering it...
What's next? Sonic on the TI/99?
@6:17 So when using an emultor in the US you have to set it to NTSC.....??!!
riiiiiiight 8D
cool
Next gaplus on the nes game genie codes.
Pog
I know there's a dead space for zx spectrum
i cant get in i cant find the disk images
I think the best version of this game is on mobile, but this is definitely impressive
will it play on the 64 maxi?
I almost spat out all my soy based milk shake all over the screen when I saw this. Dope!
Sega does........................What NintenDONT
I'd prefer new games on these systems over ports
Cool! 👍🏻🇺🇲
So can you run it on a real 128 easier than a 64?
5:20
I can’t find my fucken REU 1750, anyone know where I have it?
I think i know. it's in that place where it is.
did you check over there in that corner?
@@NoraQRosa hey, whaddya know! It’s not there! Seriously though I do have my original, fully functioning C64 setup with two 1541 drives, the 1351 mouse but my 1750 got lost somehow 😭
Oh God
F*** Open Hexagon
Should’ve put up an epileptic seizure warning tho
Super Hexagon on the C64???
Micro Hexagon, It's a lot easier than the original but so cool to see running on the C64!
Someone port sonic 1 to the atari 7800!
i want to play sonic on cpu!
You should check out the Amstrad port of Sonic as well!
Modern REU's on the C64 are already common, in that they are a feature on a device called the Ultimate II+, originally a floppy disk emulator that plugs into the cartridge port of the C64, but it has an amazing amount of features today, like cartridge emulation, modem emulation, ability to use custom kernals, and also a 16MB REU.
it's a shame though that a lot of videos on the net (like this one) have their brightness FAR too high on C64, resulting in extremely washed out colors (dark grey is basically light). A real C64 was 'pastel' but not this extreme. A result of Vice being too 'bright' on and HDTV's I think. Take a look at this one, its a lot closer: czcams.com/video/_Cg8r-VmeMk/video.html
It will not run in stock C 64. Pointless task made even more so
Well it's a better port than what Sega did with Origins.
FIRST... I think k
Well other than gruz
wow sonic that was fast... here is a chilly dog 🌭
@@yopachi ok thanks
@@yopachi oh that's just my profile piCture
A flashing lights warning would have been great for people who are or live with epileptic. Just saying. Love your videos, but come on brother.
