Yes I love when people discover the genius of Taylor swift. People should never judge her by her pop singles. Even with that, her songwriting on her fun pop singles are far superior than any other artist if you really read them. She released two sister albums in 2020. First called Folklore and the other called Evermore. Amazing.

I appreciate when people who might not typically listen to her, actually give her a chance.

Cardigan 3:15 “You’ll be standing in my front porch light”
Betty 3:15 “Betty I’m here on your doorstep”
Betty 2:45 “she said James get it”
August 2:45 “remember when I pulled up and said get in the car”

There is a theory that this song actually has a double meaning, the first meaning, at face value is about a romantic relationship. The second meaning is her relationship to her fans. The first few lines of the first verse is actually describing her past albums. For example, "sequin smile" is a direct reference to her 1989 album and "black lipstick" is a direct reference to her album reputation. Then the chorus "when I felt like everyone hated my music, you put my music on and said I was your favorite artist." That's how I hear it. Taylor totally does this on purpose, she throws in so many references wherever she can and it's so subtle in all of her music.

Also "sensual politics" referring to Lover.
I like this interpretation, especially given how multiple songs on Folklore are like this, having the "fictional" narrative up front but having very obvious parallels to her real life. My Tears Ricochet having so many references to Scott Borchetta selling her masters, and Mad Woman seeming to be a shot at Scooter Braun and his wife.

    • @RocKsiJ
      @RocKsiJ Před rokem +3

yes, and i see the whole video as a reference to her masters' situation, fighting for her life not knowing where the storm might bring her, but she still has her talent to write music so it's going to be okay

You should listen to 'august' next! It's the POV of the girl who James [Betty's boyfriend] cheated with. Then lastly, Betty (song) is James' POV.
PS: This song cardigan (is from Betty's perspective).

The video after she gets into the piano is Neverland. Peter losing Wendy is a metaphor but she leaves reality, goes into his Neverland and then decides to go back to reality (the treacherous waters then back to her safety). Wendy leaves Peter Pan to grow up and he stays in Neverland.

I think once she got out from under the suffocation of her last record label she was able to spread her creative wings. Her vocals have grown, her lyrics are hauntingly beautiful, and above all else you can tell she really loves her fans. I only see that with Twenty One Pilots and Taylor Swift, the way they play fun games with their fan base.
I’m going through your back log now so I don’t know if you’ve reacted to Cowboy Like Me or Ivy by Taylor Swift, but those are my suggestions!

For someone who wasn't a Taylor fan you did a fantastic job of understanding the lyrics & the video. There's all kinds of amazing Easter eggs hidden in this video( ie: in the cabin the clocks hands are on 1 & 3=13-Taylors fav #, the pic on the wall is her grandfather & she painted the painting,etc..) Which Swifties are happy to point out if you're interested-it's like the coolest game of Where's Waldo! Great reaction, & definitely do August, then Betty next & on Betty you'll probably catch a few of the many throwback lines to the first 2 songs-I suggest the Long Pond Studio versions with Taylor explaining the story first-so good! Also, make sure to watch the Willow video as it(the video only) starts where Cardigan stops! Loving these!

I love your interpretation of the video visuals.
I have always interpreted the video as being somewhat about her career and public image. But mainly about the fact that through everything that she goes through music is always there for her. That shot of her in open water and clingy to the piano was very powerful for me.

I thought of maybe reacting to 'august' and 'betty' in the same video will be a cool idea. because if you hear all 3 songs in a row you notice some references she purposely put in these songs that parallel each other. she even made a parallel in 2 songs at the same exact minute in 2 of the songs. at exactly minute 2:47 in the songs 'betty' and 'august' she sings:
"Remember when I pulled up and said 'Get in the car'" (August) //
"She said 'James, get in, let's drive'" (Betty)
Some more parallels and references in the 3 songs:
In Cardigan: ""When you are young, they assume you know nothing"
In the song "Betty: "I'm only seventeen, I don't know anything"
"And you'd be standin' in my front porch light" (Cardigan) //
"Salt air, and the rust on your door" (August) //
"Will you kiss me on the porch" (Betty)
"High heels on cobblestones" (Cardigan) //
"I was walking home on broken cobblestones" (Betty)
"August slipped away into a moment in time" (August) //
"it was just a summer thing" (Betty)
"Baby, kiss it better" (Cardigan) //
"If you kiss me...will it patch your broken wings?" (Betty)
"Chase two girls, lose the one" (Cardigan) //
"You weren't mine to lose" (August)
"To kiss in cars" (Cardigan) //
"Kissin' in my car again" (Betty)

Not only was this shot during the pandemic, but she also directed this.
Her directing début was on her song The Man from her album Lover which was incredible, and then she directed this MV and the Willow MV (from Evermore) which continues the visual story. So i really suggest you watch the music video for Willow

Like everyone said, the rest of the trilogy is August (arguably the most popular song on folklore) and Betty (the only song from folklore she has performed fully live, at the CMAs 2020). I’m going to suggest Marjorie, about her grandmother; and evermore

If you loved this, then you'll love "Willow" which is basically a continuation of this at least as far as the video is concerned. I'd also love to see more Official video reactions of hers and as far as All Too Well is concerned, there are 2 live versions that I'd urge you to watch and that's her 2014 Grammy performance and her Chicago performance which was a more intimate setting with only her closest fans in attendance. Also a lot of her Reputation Tour performances were 🔥🔥🔥. Can't wait to see more Tay Tay.❤️❤️

Cardigan is so good, and when you listen to Betty you can connect dots ( same when you listen to August before Betty)! She is amazing and I'm so happy that you are enjoying your trip towards her music! Taylor is also very good when she does lives and I love her acoustic piano performance of "Out of the woods" at the grammys ( I would advice you to watch the music video first then watch her acoustic performance to see how she changes her pop songs into an acoustic one)

Loved the music video, it was beautiful. 😊
I think I've heard this one before but had no idea of the story or listened to the lyrics properly. So sad but beautiful, 💔 and the melody is really catchy. The distorted noise at the end is so interesting, it's strange but I think it suited the song to end like that, was kind of jarring and uncomfortable compared to the melody of the rest of the song - kind of like how the songs protagonist would feel - its so creative. 🎵

So I see everyone has explained the 3 songs that make up a story, but I also wanted to let you know, that this music video is only the first part of a two part story. The second part to this music video continues in her other music video for her song "Willow" which is the first single off her album "Evermore" (the sister album to Folklore)! 😊
