Taylor said she wrote this when she hit her first stretch of not being “new thing” and had self doubt. Phoebe said she got emotional singing the song bc she could relate so well. Yes Phoebe had verses not just harmony.
This song always makes me feel so sad and nostalgic. I just turned 22 and these lyrics hit so hard. When I was a teenager I thought I knew everything and had my life figured out, and now at 22 I don't know what the hell I'm doing with my life. I feel like time is flying and it makes me so emotional. It's like I've lost that light that comes with being young and in your teens. Like being scared of aging and things changing and losing what you have. Love you reactions!!

Wait until you are 63. You have your whole life ahead of you, it is okay to make mistakes, just don't repeat them. Never stay in an abusive marriage, whether it is emotional and/or physical. I, myself married young I was 17 almost 18 he was almost 9 years older, he thought I would make a good punching bag. As a friend was picking a Jack Daniels bottle out of my head she convinced me to leave him, I took her advice, but he gave me a going away present, he said it was something to remember him by, a black eye and bruised ribs from his square toed boots. I never went back, Sept 29th I celebrated my 38th wedding anniversary with my 3rd husband. Yes, husband number 3, husband number #2 I met while I was in the Army, he decided he wasn't ready for marriage shortly after we married. PS: Joining the Army was the best decision I ever made, not that it is for everyone, but it is character-building. Also, there are the other branches of the military, the easiest one is the Air Force. And no, I am not a recruiter. But you do what you feel is right for you, but never marry anyone because you are scared of life.
Phoebe sang the second verse, her voice is a bit… breathier than Taylors? I dont know if im using the right terms here, but she sang my favourite line in this song which was “when did I go from growing up to breaking down?”.
On a side note, the sand running out of the hourglass in this video chills me. I am 30 and I have major “time is running out” anxiety. And I havent come anywhere near as close as Taylor has at achieving her dreams 😅
If you think about it, at 18 Taylor was the "IT" girl of country music, and she "knew everything". But as she starting dipping her toes into the world of "Pop Music" as she was making the album Red, it must have been scary. How were her fans going to react? How was the music industry going to react? She knew nothing.
This song is so beautiful, and totally describes how female singers have to reinvent themselves every couple of years (as she talked about in Miss Americana) to keep 'casual fans' engaged.
Phoebe sang the verse from "How long would it be cute" to "are we only biding time til I lose your attention" and the chorus that comes after that.
Phoebe had a couple verses and sang together sometimes.

Yeah, while man and women are more similar than different, I still think that aging for us dudes is different. I mostly relate to this song from a similar angle as you or when I find myself telling a story without realizing that I already told that story and suddenly I feel like I'm "nothing new" and maybe get scared that I don't have anything to say.
I'm also in my 30s, we aren't old but it can feel like that.
I really like this song, I never skip it when I listen to RED TV but I also haven't added it to my phone playlist.
The fact that she feared aging when she was only 22 is screwed up
I’d imagine it’s probably hard when you’ve had a full-on career and felt the weight of the world on your shoulders for a decade already and you’re now 22, the already adversarial general public starts to turn against you.
Sure, she’s always still had her swifties, but she probably thought her time in the spotlight was almost over. That’s pressure.

you are not old lol. i don't think I'm old. most of the time hahaha. we all feel old because every day we get a day older. it's ALWAYS the oldest we've ever been lol. I'm turning 41 on Friday, yes the day Midnights comes out lol. best bday gift ever!

Definetly sounded beautiful but it was another sad and slow one 😔 I can't relate to all of her songs, but I do like that they are real. I just think I need a less sombre song from her. Would have to be in a particular mood for this one.
