I thought you did really well with this! It's actually natural to make different assumptions as you go along. It felt like an authentic reaction. I think you understood it in the end. I clapped and laughed out loud when you said it's like in English class, trying to understand hidden meanings and metaphors - that's EXACTLY what it's like with Taylor's writing. One of the main reasons I love her work. This was great :)

idk if anyone told you this but Taylor wrote the treatment for this music video, and she directed it as well with very few people (it was during Covid).

Yes it's exactly like english class and being assigned a poem to analyze. And learning about her personal life and relationships is like consulting the encyclopedia to understand the full meanings and metaphors behind her songs. That's why many of us learn about her personal life. Not because we care who she's dating.
You definitely got to the heart of the song! It’s fun to know the backstory, the trilogy, etc, but it’s not imperative. This is one of the best examples of her in all ways…the lyrics, the layers, the simple but effective instrumentation but with a catchy hook, and her deep, smoky voice. Like you said, there is specificity yet it’s universally relatable. The “Peter losing Wendy” gets me every time! Here is this guy that she just wanted to love but he refused to grow up. So good!
I somehow managed to catch the Peter Pan reference when I was listening to it but also completely to miss the entire point of him not being able to grow up 😂 sometimes I wonder if I should go back in and add stuff to make myself look smarter, but I’d probably even mess that up lol

Re: her pop radio stuff - they're nowhere near my favorites of her music, but like you said they have their place! Taylor recently revealed that she has different categories in her head when she's writing lyrics: fountain pen songs, quill pen songs, and glitter gel pen songs. The singles you're more familiar with are glitter gel pen songs, which she describes as:
"These are songs with lyrics that make you want to dance, sing and toss glitter around the room. They remind you not to take yourself too seriously, which is something we all need to hear these days."
Taylor is a pretty versatile artist, and she's also smart. She knows exactly how to write a catchy hook that will get stuck in people's heads, and she knows that fun stuff still has merit. It might not be everyone's cup of tea, there's something special about a lyricist who IS capable of profound work also being happy with her glitter gel pen songs that just exist to be fun!
I also like that even in some of her extremely radio-friendly pop stuff you'll still find sharp one-liners or evocative lyrics, they're just not the focus of the songs because she's not trying to be poetic, she's just vibing. I think knowing her better work actually helps me appreciate her less substantial songs, because I can just let myself have fun listening to them knowing that that's all they were meant to be.
Really looking forward to you getting through folklore! fyi every song on the album (including its bonus song The Lakes) has an introduction on the Long Pond documentary, it's weird that you couldn't find it! But they're all out there lol.
You know, that makes a lot of sense! In a way, sprinkling a couple of pop hits in an album, then let’s her write whatever else she wants!

Swifties are notorious for hearing the rest of her albums and being like "why was x a single instead of y, when y is so much better?" because most of us are here for the album cuts, and we often get frustrated that people think of her music as manufactured pop when there's so much more to her work. But at the end of the day, if Taylor wants to push her glitter gel pen songs to the radio because it sells with the general population, then there are going to be people who naturally think it's all she does!

Ok so basically Folklore is a concept album... The album has a fictional love triangle narration... Involving 3 characters Betty, James & Augustine (The other woman)....This song is based on Betty's POV... There r other 2 songs Betty & August....the song Betty is from James's POV & August is from Augustine's POV.
Oh. Kinda wish I had known that before completely embarrassing myself 😂

Do listen to Betty & August next to complete the love triangle story .. all these songs are from the perspective of those said characters... Taylor is such a visual storyteller when it comes to being a lyricist.

@@markabusireactions yes.. Taylor addressed Evermore as the sister album to Folklore. They were released just months apart during the pandemic era (2020)... Hope u enjoy.
Welcome to the rabbit hole. Taylor's folklore and evermore are definitely her more serious work, but there are songs on her other albums that are really good, it is just a matter of going through her discography. There is a bonus song on folklore and it is called "the lakes" it is so beautiful.
Well I’m planning on doing those two albums, just to see if I become a swiftie or not lol. If I do and there’s demand for it, then I’ll check out more!
You did a good job trying to figure it out. I’m sure you’ve been informed of the love triangle with this song being from the point of view of the girl who was cheated on. It is like an English class sometimes trying to figure it all out!

I don’t blame you for not liking her big radio hits. I actually don’t really LIKE most of them, myself… But my daughter’s favorite song is “Shake It Off” because she likes dancing to the music video, and I’m a fool for my daughter, so we listen to that on loop some days. 😂 It’s a little painful to know that that’s all that people think of when they think of her, but she used to personally go from radio station to radio station to try to get them to play her songs at 17, so I think that’s how she worked out exactly what kind of song would do numbers on the radio, and that’s also why they sound generic. (They’re still a step above a lot of other pop music. At least they’re full songs with bridges and all. Plus her songs usually have some emotional resonance or purpose to them. She’s not the only pop artist doing those things, but as someone whose childhood discography was limited to Now That’s What I Call Music… I know pop. @_@ Also, I could only listen to my (borrowed) Evanescence CD on my portable CD player because my mom would nooot have approved, haha.)
