Making a hand plane holder

- Hand planes are great to use and not so bad to look at, too. I'm making a tool wall to organize my messy basement work area, and getting these planes out of a few drawers and into secure holders where they're in easy reach and in plain view.
These are easy to make, and the design seems more than adequate to safely keep these old planes from falling. The wood came entirely from my scrap pile, so other than a little glue and brads, it was basically free.
A keen eye would notice that three of the pictured planes aren't Stanleys. They're... Harbor Freight (gasp), but they are actually pretty useful, and one was easy to modify into a scrub plane.
For those of you that find my video editing skills sub standard and my voice irritating, well I guess I'd have to agree with you! - Jak na to + styl
Minor suggestion: Route a small dado located where the blade hits the vertical base. I will copy this for myself. BRAVO!
This is a good idea. The wood I used is very soft pine, so I’m not very worried about it, but your suggestion will be used for any future copies.
this is my project for today, i like the way you have done these, thank you
Great idea and I like the way the rack looks. You can also just build more racks as you acquire more planes. I did add the earth magnets to my racks and it stops the planes from moving at all in racks. Thanks for a great idea.
Thanks. I’ll probably never quit trying to find more planes (it’s a disease!), so this makes it easy.
You can add little magnets for the hold strength.
Nice build, I'm gonna make these for my planes. It looks cool.
Tnx.

Thanks! I’ve built 6 more, including some for block planes, and they work nicely. I thought about adding magnets, but realized after completing the first one that unless you use the upward motion with the twist to pull the heel outward, it simply will not come out of place. Cheaper that way, I guess.
I think it could find its way to a wood working magazine, this is a very cool build. Thank you for sharing and I hope you have a blessed week. New sub here as well.

Hey thanks a lot, Dale. Very high praise.
Very nice design. Avoids a lot of complications.
Nice job !
Tnx man
Great idea, thanks for sharing!
Is that a Harbor freight saw blade?
Yes. I have no complaints.
Yea I have one too. I found it to be fine for softwoods but the second I started resawing some oak it burned the hell out of it.
It’s definitely been better than what I expected for the price. The carbide tips aren’t very big, but I will probably try sharpening it anyway when the time comes.
Nice and easy, thanks. Just a comment on the video itself, the volume is really really low, hard to hear. Not sure what mics and how you have them set up but it comes out really soft. Hopefully constructive criticism!
Yeah a couple people have said that before. I did this on my old cell phone, but future videos should be better. Thanks!
@@presentdayjeff5790 you bet! I remember my old cell phone too! A shotgun mic or even better, a lavalier mic would do the trick.
I like the idea of separate units for each plane so one can change the layout to accommodate new additions but.... why not plane down the wood used, its far too chunky to be aesthetically pleasing. So many wood workers use timbers far thicker than necessary and give their projects a clunky amateur look.
In my case, because I used 3/4” pine, and I was satisfied with the look of this thickness. Since I’m the only one who uses my wood shop and thus the only one to please by its aesthetics, it’s fine with me. I was going for simplicity and function with just a nod to form, because the appearance of Stanley/Bailey hand planes is really what catches the eye and makes me smile. My plane holders are just a simple way for me and anyone who wants to follow the design to use common lumber to achieve reasonably attractive, mostly utilitarian function. Thanks for watching.
Do you have a view of the completed rack?
I changed the title image of the video to the latest picture I have of it. All but one plane holder is completed in this picture.
I’m sorry but I can't hear what you are saying without the volume on full which brought a lot of electrical noise with it.
Thanks. You make a good point. The recording was all done with my phone which isn’t the best sound quality, so in future videos maybe I’ll try using a better mic setup or just narrate over on the computer.
Jeff Newton I hate commenting on video quality as I think people are good enough to give up their time to make video it sounds ungrateful.
That’s okay. Glad you like it otherwise.
