fellow psych student here. i think to be an efficient therapist u gotta be able to do both. especially with kids. yes, you have to be neutral and “scientific” in how you view someone’s situation as a mental health professional. but at the same time it’s important to build a relationship with your patients and be able to put things for them in ways that they can understand. Be a professional first of course, but also stay human. im sure if you want to help people and you’ve worked your ass of to this point, you’re gonna do great. good luck

It was hard not to just throw everything I’ve learned into one session, but when I remembered to take a step back and just focus on building the client-counselor relationship, things went very smoothly! All in all, nobody died, or got $5 therapy (it was free lmao)

They're not really therapists, they're crisis workers. If you tell them how bad you're doing, they'll either call the cops on you or just try their best to calm you down to get you off the call.
Yeah I find they can be really sweet and well meaning, but not always helpful lol. Sometimes they say things like “you have so much to live for, and you have so many people who love and care about you” but it’s just kinda meaningless because you know they don’t know anything about you so they don’t even know if what they’re saying is true.

when i was in highschool our drafting teacher was a crack head his super model hot wife left him, the principle saw a pic of him at a high school party doing drugs. He'd let students into his room to do coke, then one day he went into psychosis hard, so hard that he locked himself into the bathroom of his basement convinced if he left he'd be arrested. He didn't call into work and luckily its the kind of job they have to try and get you rehab first, so they helped him and he kept his job. Ive moved away from there since, but he's been a husk of his former self since apparently sobriety has not been easy for him.
