My friend has an iMac 2013 and after a power failure it doesn’t boot, after running disk utility it reports the HDD is unformatted and smart error.
I can’t run First Aid even if I select the disc, the disc also report a size of 4.14GB, actual size is 1TB.
Tried to install Homebrew and testdisk from the Terminal to recover the partition but it throws up a syntax error.
Can I run testdisk from a USB drive? Or anything else I can do to recover the partition?

So when I click “disk utility” it wont let me click repair disk in the first aid. So I’m guessing it doesn’t need repaired. So after that do I just restart the computer?
I have same like this ,, only question mark . and appear base system of disk on unitiy disk . So you way is mean , not broken in SSD ,, right ?

genius bars are really just clown bars they sometimes damage your products more so you have to buy a new one when the fixes are usually simple or cheap, you should watch louis rossmann he does some great coverage of it all.

Hello! I have the same problem except in addition to that my screen is broken and i cannot see anything.
I m trying so hard on my external monitor. But the recovery mode just wont show on external monitor. It doesnt allow me to show th screen of the macbook on my monitor.

Hi ITJungles. many thanks for your video and instructions although I am sorry t say that I am still at a complete lost as I am not clever at all when it comes to computer technical things. My problem at the moment is that I have an old MacOS X from back in 2009 and unfortunately although it had been working and using Mac High Sierra perfectly up to a few t days ago, then I did something stupid and accidentally removed or deleted some of the most essential software programs and now find myself that I am not able to see the main HD or get the actual windows for Recovery or installation of any new software such as a new High Sierra. I thought I could over come all the issues by inserting the original Installation of MacOS X that came with the Mac when I first bought it and also unless I insert this DVD I am not able to see anything at all on the computer. I have used this DVD before to re-install the MacOS X software and it worked perfectly, but now it doesn't seem to want to do anything. If you think you might be able to share any advice or help me to sort it out, I would be happy to explain things a little further in order for you to be able to understand it better. Unfortunately the Apple support members have given up on me as I also have problems with the Keyboard and the mouse, so I have been left in the lurch so of thing. Recently upgraded my mac from Sierra to High Sierra buy after an hour of installation it is showing now Failed to open os x installer amd just 2 option coming restart and startup disc.if I restart it comes back to the same screen and if I chose startup disc it shows nothing. Neither windows recovery coming neither time machine option. What should I do now?

I need some help, i spent 2 days with Apple support no luck, my Mac Pro 2011 has question mark issue- new hard drive was added-old one had issues, tried to boot MacOS by USB Sierra and even tried El Capitan and it doesn't boot nor it goes to recovery mode-gets stuck to white screen. Macbook pro early 2015 13 inch (16gb ram 256 ssd aftermarket) I am using bigsur in it.
Whenever i powers on my machine QUESTION MARK SIGN ON FOLDER starts blinking.
Sometimes it appears and sometimes it doesn't. Totally unpredictable.
I have done following things as solutions but sign comes again after somedays.
Reset SMC and NVRAM, Disk Utility Repair, Factory reset machine, Reinstalled new OS from bootable drive.
Still question mark sign appears after working fine for few days. Really tired and irritated from this issue.
Need your help guys, what could be the problem?

They say that this is the System Not Found icon. A blinking ? on a 📂? Ugh, this means that your system volume cannot be detected. But what if you have a hard drive in there and you see this? This means that your hard drive is fried.
Fun fact: Before Macs had hard drives in them, we had floppy disks that we booted off of. So, if for example, the original Macintosh was waiting for a floppy disk to be inserted, there was a ? on a little 💾 icon.
Also, on some really old MacOS' the ? and Finder icons alternated blinking on a 📂 or 💾 icon.
