  • If you're 2012 macbook pro a1278 is having flashing blinking folder with question mark, turning off randomly, computer freeze randomly, or white screen of death, this tutorial Fix is for you!
So hit LIKE to Help other find it, and Spread the word!
    How to Fix:
    1. Verify the Model Number.
This problem is common with 2011,2012 macbook pros with retina and non retina displays.
Check the bottom of the computer for the serial No. and see if you have warranty to get it repaired for free. Go here to Check: goo.gl/XZWi8R
If not valid anymore proceed to next step.
    2. Secondly you are going to need to find out your model number mine is a1278.
so you will need to take apart the bottom of the laptop. Remove the hard drive SSD framework cable and mounts and disconnect the hard drive unibody cable.
The Unibody cable is the actuall problem with this computer NOT THE HARD DRIVE ITSELF.
If you replace this HDD Hard Drive Cable the Computer will work again.
if you have a a1278 you can buy this part here
    on amazon. Site Source:goo.gl/x0gJaf
If you have another just search for it.
The Model of the cable is also listed on the Cable itself!
If you have any other errors like -1006f
+1007F -2105F. you need to restart holding [option] before you push the turn on button and select a wifi network to download recovery. Once you download recovery you can recover the os x yosemite and restore you files using the new cable. Site Source: goo.gl/aMqu1K
Make sure to restart and hold [Option + R] to get to recovery!
hope this helps! if you need help please resource the links provided, comment, and like to help others find this informative video fix!

WOW!!!!!! I'd like to start off by saying that when this happened to me, I contacted Apple & they told me that my Macbook was a lost cause. According to them it was a hard drive issue that was more than likely not repairable, & that next time I should invest more money in a macbook with SSD. Either way, I was told that I needed to buy another macbook.
I took the liberty to just do the research on my own, and came across this video. I ordered to part & followed the directions.
WORKED LIKE A CHARM. Total cost of the repair was $20, and my macbook was back just as the way it was before this issue occurred. Saved my Macbook, & the money in my bank account.
    Thank you VERY MUCH!

Your comment of seeing the OSX base system up as a cable issue, was spot on! (And something no one else mentioned) Ordered part last night, came this afternoon. My part included the bracket so it was slightly easier. 5 minutes and I was back online. THANK YOU!

So I followed your instructions, got the new cable via Amazon and it worked!!! Hallelujah! The only tricky part was the reinstall of that little gold strip, sliding it back in. I had the flashing folder on my a1286 mid 2012 macbook pro and followed your steps until I also got the blank HDD part at the startup disk selection screen. So I assumed you were right about the damaged cable but then remembered I had an extra SATA HDD from when I upgraded my iMac to a SSD.
I installed it and everything worked perfectly, no need for a cable or anything else. Perhaps it was just a dead HDD (even though the system recognized it had a 500gb hdd). Either way great vid.

I am still using my macbook pro 13 inch none-retina mid-2012 and started getting the prohibited sign flashing everytime I turn it on and can just wait for hours for it to finally turn on properly. The solution was to just order and change the hardrive cable. (Used for nearly 10 years now) It now works perfectly after the cable change, boots easily, no problem to restart, no problem to copy and paste large files, works just as usual and no need to wipe my whole drive, I still got all my data on my drive. Hope this helps :D

Hi Chris Brian. many thanks for your video and instructions although I am sorry t say that I am still at a complete lost as I am not clever at all when it comes to computer technical things. My problem at the moment is that I have an old MacOS X from back in 2009 and unfortunately although it had been working and using Mac High Sierra perfectly up to a few t days ago, then I did something stupid and accidentally removed or deleted some of the most essential software programs and now find myself that I am not able to see the main HD or get the actual windows for Recovery or installation of any new software such as a new High Sierra. I thought I could over come all the issues by inserting the original Installation of MacOS X that came with the Mac when I first bought it and also unless I insert this DVD I am not able to see anything at all on the computer. I have used this DVD before to re-install the MacOS X software and it worked perfectly, but now it doesn't seem to want to do anything. If you think you might be able to share any advice or help me to sort it out, I would be happy to explain things a little further in order for you to be able to understand it better. Unfortunately the Apple support members have given up on me as I also have problems with the Keyboard and the mouse, so I have been left in the lurch so of thing. Thanks for taking the time to read this and I look forward and I hope to hear from you soon, as you seem to know far more than I could ever know about computers. Kind regards John E

Did this. Replaced with new SATA cable and bracket. Still nothing. Does this mean the hard drive is done for?

This Video Guided the Complete Restoration of My mid-2012 13" MacBook Pro to the Latest Used Operating System - Immediately Back In Business. Take your time and be very gentle with the delicate yellow tab. Use 1.5 - 2" of electrical tape to affix its bracket to the side of the hard drive and mount the cable's receptacle where it goes first before gently plugging the yellow tab back into the cable receptacle.
After closing up the laptop, there was No diving into command-R and OSX-Utility and Re-installing OSX Lion. This was after Applecare first told me there would be 3 months of Data Loss from a Re-install of Lion and Time Machine Back-up install (I had been 3 months delinquent on backing up my laptop). I attempted to get after this faster by setting up an appointment with the Apple Store. Applecare said the laptop was too old to be serviced by the Apple Store and did not have nor could not source this cable. So I did as instructed and ordered the cable from Amazon ($8) and waited only a day. Back in Business. Exceptional Useful, Short, Straightforward video. Wish more were made like this.

Thanks for athis nice video. That was happening with my Samsung 840 SSD. And I was going crazy trying to reinstal Mac OSX. And, in one of my tests, I swaped the SSD and Installed my old HDD and it booted, I could even run time machine and made a day backup. I removed the ribbon cable and order a new one. I hope this fixes the issue. Thanks.

First of all, thank you for the helpful video! I have exactly the same problem. However, on a MacBook Pro Retina 13 inch, early 2015, which has no hard drive cable.
Stupid question: Is it possible that it's the "I/O Board Data Cable" or does it have nothing to do with the SSD? I hope someone can help me. :(

I popped open my macbook, removed the hard drive cable and plugged it back in to the motherboard. This fixed my problem! My Mac booted up normally. Must have come loose or something.
